The Camper Van roared forward like a frenzied steel beast. Lin Fan gripped the armrest tightly, feeling as if his heart was about to leap out of his throat.
"Professor, what is this thing?" Lin Fan asked loudly, suppressing his discomfort.
"This is my modified Nitrogen Acceleration Device!" Professor Zhang explained while skillfully maneuvering the steering wheel. "It can temporarily boost the engine's power and shake them off!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the Camper Van accelerated again, shooting forward like an arrow. The scenery outside flew by in a blur, the swirling yellow sand left behind, and the black SUV gradually disappeared from view.
"Whoa..." Lin Fan let out a long breath, his tense nerves relaxing slightly. "Are we safe now?"
"Not yet!" Professor Zhang's expression remained serious. "This thing only lasts for three minutes; we have to shake them off quickly!"
"Three minutes?!" Lin Fan's heart raced again as he turned to look out the window, noticing that the black SUV had caught up and was getting closer.
"Hold on tight!" Professor Zhang shouted, suddenly jerking the steering wheel. The Camper Van made a sharp turn and plunged into a section of the Gobi Desert.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sound of bullets hitting the vehicle echoed again. Lin Fan's heartbeat quickened as he held Xiao Tang tightly, fearing for her safety.
However, Xiao Tang seemed completely unfazed by it all. She clapped her hands excitedly, pointing at the ever-changing scenery outside with a joyful laugh. "Haha, this is fun! So much fun!"
Lin Fan looked at the innocent Xiao Tang, feeling a mix of emotions. He didn't know if they would succeed in escaping or what awaited them, but he knew he had to protect Xiao Tang at all costs.
Professor Zhang drove the Camper Van across the rugged Gobi Desert, the vehicle bouncing violently as Lin Fan felt like he was on a small boat in a storm, at risk of being thrown out at any moment.
"Professor, it seems there's no road ahead!" Lin Fan pointed forward, where a towering sand dune loomed like an insurmountable barrier blocking their path.
"Hold on tight!" Professor Zhang did not slow down; instead, he pressed the accelerator, and the Camper Van roared toward the dune.
"Ah—" Lin Fan exclaimed, tightly closing his eyes.
"Boom!"
With a loud crash, the Camper Van soared into the air, leaping over the high sand dune before landing heavily on the other side.
"Cough cough..." Lin Fan coughed from the impact as he opened his eyes to find that the scenery had completely changed.
Before them lay a desolate canyon, with jagged rocks and no vegetation in sight, only the howling wind echoing in their ears.
"Where are we now?" Lin Fan asked.
"Misty Canyon," Professor Zhang replied while checking the map. "The terrain here is complex; it's a good place to shake them off."
"Misty Canyon?" Lin Fan repeated the name, feeling a sense of unease rising within him.
Before Lin Fan could finish his thought, a thick fog began to pour from deep within the canyon, quickly enveloping the entire area in a blanket of white.
"Not good!" Professor Zhang's expression changed. "This fog is suspicious!"
"What’s wrong?" Lin Fan asked nervously, while Xiao Tang also stopped her playful antics and curiously looked out at the swirling mist outside the window.
Professor Zhang did not answer. He turned on the headlights, only to find that the light could barely penetrate a few meters into the thick fog, resulting in extremely low visibility.
"This fog is too dense; we need to find a safe place to hide quickly," Professor Zhang decisively stated. "Lin Fan, turn on the navigation and see if there’s anywhere nearby we can take shelter."
Lin Fan immediately activated the navigation system, searching for safe areas nearby. However, the screen displayed nothing but a blank space.
"Bad news, the signal is being interfered with!" Lin Fan exclaimed.
"Damn it!" Professor Zhang cursed under his breath. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. "It seems we can only rely on ourselves now."
He slowed down the vehicle, cautiously navigating through the fog. The headlights flickered weakly in the thick mist, resembling a small boat drifting in an endless white sea.
Suddenly, Professor Zhang slammed on the brakes, and the Camper Van screeched loudly as the body jolted violently. Lin Fan and Xiao Tang were caught off guard, their bodies lurching forward.
"What happened, Professor?!" Lin Fan asked, still shaken.
"There's something ahead!" Professor Zhang pointed forward, his tone serious.
Following Professor Zhang's gesture, Lin Fan looked in that direction and faintly saw a tall figure emerging from the fog. The figure was dressed in black combat gear and held a black rifle, coldly staring at them.
"It’s Wang Qiang!" Lin Fan immediately recognized the person, and his heart sank; he knew trouble had arrived.
Wang Qiang smirked coldly, slowly raising the rifle in his hand, the dark muzzle aimed at the Camper Van.
"Bang!"
With a gunshot, the bullet pierced through the mist, shattering the Camper Van's windshield, sending shards flying. Lin Fan instinctively shielded Xiao Tang, holding her tightly in his arms.
"Run!" Professor Zhang shouted, suddenly jerking the steering wheel. The Camper Van made a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding Wang Qiang's attack.
"Thinking of escaping? Not so easy!" Wang Qiang's voice came from the thick fog, laced with malice and triumph.
Professor Zhang drove the Camper Van erratically through the mist, trying to shake off Wang Qiang's pursuit. However, it seemed that Wang Qiang was intimately familiar with this fog; he always managed to predict Professor Zhang's route and set up ambushes in advance, leaving them defenseless.
"Damn it!" Professor Zhang slammed his fist on the steering wheel, his face filled with anger and helplessness.
"Professor, what do we do now?" Lin Fan asked anxiously. He held Xiao Tang tightly, feeling her body tremble slightly from fear, his heart filled with worry and unease.
