Lin Fan protected Xiao Tang behind him, his muscles tense and ready for battle. However, at that moment, the mist around them suddenly began to churn violently, and a series of low, ominous roars echoed through the canyon, sending chills down their spines.
"This is bad! It's a horde of Zombies!" Professor Zhang's face changed dramatically as he recognized the familiar roar, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart.
From the mist, pairs of crimson eyes gradually emerged, accompanied by a nauseating stench of decay. More and more Zombies surged in from all directions, surrounding them completely.
"What do we do? We're surrounded!" Lin Fan looked at the dense mass of Zombies before him and felt a wave of despair. Even if he could handle one or two Mutated Zombies, facing such overwhelming numbers left him with no options.
"Roar—"
A massive Zombie let out a deafening roar, baring its sharp fangs as it lunged toward Lin Fan.
In a critical moment, Xiao Tang suddenly broke free from Lin Fan's grasp and stood in front of him. Her previously innocent eyes now sparkled with dazzling light as a powerful force erupted from her small frame, creating an invisible shockwave that sent all the surrounding Zombies flying away.
"Boom—"
The canyon echoed with the thunderous sound of the explosion. Those Zombies struck by the shockwave fell to the ground like marionettes with cut strings, unable to move again.
"What... what just happened?" Lin Fan stared in disbelief at the scene before him. He couldn't believe that the seemingly frail Xiao Tang possessed such immense power.
Professor Zhang was equally astonished, muttering to himself, "Could it be... could this be Xiao Tang's true power?"
Xiao Tang turned around and looked at Lin Fan with an innocent smile on her face, as if nothing had happened just moments ago.
"Xiao Tang, are you okay?" Lin Fan hurriedly stepped forward to check Xiao Tang's body, fearing she had sustained even the slightest injury.
Xiao Tang shook her head to indicate she was fine, then tugged at Lin Fan's shirt and pointed ahead, signaling him to continue moving forward.
Lin Fan and Professor Zhang exchanged a glance, both seeing surprise and confusion in each other's eyes. However, it was clearly not the time to delve deeper into it; they needed to leave this dangerous place as soon as possible.
Under Xiao Tang's lead, the three of them continued deeper into the canyon. Along the way, any Zombie that approached would be repelled by the powerful force emanating from Xiao Tang, unable to come within a step of them.
Lin Fan watched the bouncy Xiao Tang ahead, filled with doubt. He didn't know what had happened to her or why she possessed such immense power, but he sensed that there seemed to be a secret hidden within her...
They stumbled along, the rock walls on either side of the canyon rising higher and higher, nearly blocking out the sky. Sunlight struggled to penetrate, making the canyon even more eerie and terrifying.
" Xiao Tang, be careful!" Lin Fan grabbed Xiao Tang's hand, pulling her behind him, afraid she might trip on the rugged path.
Xiao Tang turned back and smiled sweetly at him, revealing her small canine teeth, then pointed ahead, signaling him to continue moving forward.
Professor Zhang walked at the back, observing their surroundings with a furrowed brow, seemingly deep in thought.
"Professor, why are there so many Zombies in this canyon? And they look... very strange," Lin Fan whispered. He noticed that these Zombies had flickering red eyes, moved quickly, and were extremely aggressive—completely different from the slow and sluggish Zombies he had encountered before.
"If I'm not mistaken, these should be Mutated Zombies," Professor Zhang said gravely. "They are more dangerous than ordinary Zombies and much harder to deal with."
"Mutated Zombies?" Lin Fan's heart sank. "How did they end up here? Could it be..."
"Shh!" Professor Zhang suddenly gestured for silence and pointed ahead. "Look!"
Following Professor Zhang's finger, Lin Fan saw a massive cave at the end of the canyon. The entrance was shrouded in a thin mist, obscuring what lay inside, but he could vaguely hear deep growls emanating from within, sending chills down his spine.
"Let's go take a look," Xiao Tang said as she walked straight toward the cave.
"Wait, Xiao Tang!" Lin Fan tried to grab her, but she shook him off.
"Don't worry, Xiao Tang... seems to sense something," Professor Zhang said, holding Lin Fan back and signaling him to observe the situation first.
Xiao Tang reached the entrance of the cave and stopped. She looked up at the top of the cave.
After a moment, she turned around and waved at Lin Fan and Professor Zhang, indicating for them to follow.
Lin Fan and Professor Zhang exchanged glances, seeing surprise and confusion in each other's eyes, but ultimately chose to trust Xiao Tang and followed her into the cave.
As soon as they entered, a cold, damp air hit them, causing Lin Fan to shiver involuntarily. He turned on his flashlight, and in the dim light, he discovered that the interior of the cave was more spacious than he had imagined. The walls were covered with strange patterns and symbols that were incomprehensible but gave off an eerie feeling.
"Professor, what do you think those are?" Lin Fan asked, pointing at the patterns on the wall.
Professor Zhang observed carefully for a moment before shaking his head. "I'm not sure either. These patterns are very ancient, like some unknown script."
Lin Fan and Professor Zhang hurried forward and saw a massive stone door illuminated by the beam of the flashlight. The door was tightly shut, adorned with lifelike carvings depicting various forms of Zombies and humans dressed in ancient clothing. They seemed to be engaged in a fierce battle, the scene incredibly gruesome.
"Could this... could this be..." Professor Zhang gazed at the carvings on the stone door with excitement and disbelief. "Is this what legends speak of...?"
