“Park Chan-yeol...?” Anna was astonished, unable to comprehend why Park Chan-yeol would suddenly appear here at this moment.
Hogga lowered his head, smiled, glanced at Park Chan-yeol, and said to Anna: “I think you have something to do. I’ll take my leave now. See you later, and Merry Christmas.”
Anna politely bowed and said, “Alright, goodbye.” She wanted to take off the scarf around her neck to return it to him, but Hogga gently stopped her movement, raised the corners of his mouth, got into the car, and left.
It became quiet again. Watching Hogga’s car disappear around the corner, Anna turned around; this scene was indeed a bit awkward.
Anna smiled lightly and bowed in greeting: “Hello, Mr. Chan-yeol, what brings you here?”
Politeness?
What does politeness mean?
It signifies an insurmountable strangeness and distance.
“I... happened to be passing by,” Chan-yeol replied with a smile, though his eyes clearly revealed some fatigue. Anna knew that during this time, their schedules were usually packed because many fans hoped to see their favorite idol on television during Christmas.
“Who was that?” Park Chan-yeol asked.
Anna thought for a moment and said: “Ah, just a friend who has helped me a lot.”
"Is that so... that's great," Chan-yeol said.
The snow was getting heavier, and although the distance wasn't far, the swirling snowflakes blurred their images in each other's eyes. The sound of Christmas music drifted from somewhere far away, faintly, and a few scattered ice-blue balloons could still be seen.
"Have you been doing well during this time?" Chan-yeol asked.
Anna nodded and smiled, saying, "Pretty good."
"That's good to hear. I've always wanted to tell you..." Chan-yeol began slowly, but Anna felt a tightness in her heart and quickly interrupted him.
"Everything is in the past; I've already forgotten about it," Anna said with a smile.
Chan-yeol forced a bitter smile and replied, "Is that so? Then that's good."
"Would you like to come in for dinner? I prepared a whole roasted turkey," Anna politely asked.
"No, I have something to do," Chan-yeol said.
"Then I'll go in first," Anna said. "Goodbye." After finishing her sentence, Anna smiled slightly, bowed to Park Chan-yeol in farewell, and walked toward her home. Turning around and taking a step, the simple action seemed to require great effort and determination from Anna.
Chan-yeol hesitated for a moment and said, "Wait."
Anna stopped in her tracks as Chan-yeol approached her. He took out a small gift box from his pocket and handed it to Anna with a smile, saying, "Merry Christmas, this is a gift."
Anna stared at the gift box for a long time, slowly extending her hands to take it, softly saying, "Thank you."
"What about my gift? When will you give it to me?" Chan-yeol asked.
Surprised by Chan-yeol's sudden question, Anna looked up at him and apologetically said, "I'm sorry, I didn't expect to receive a gift from you. I'll bring it to you once I'm ready."
Chan-yeol smiled slightly and said, "The gift I want is very simple."
"What is it?"
"In the future, please don't use honorifics anymore. Since everything has been forgotten, let's start over."
Anna looked into Park Chan-yeol's serious eyes, but she couldn't dare to accept every word he said. She wasn't sure if, at that moment, Park Chan-yeol saw her, Anna Zheng, or the shadow of Yura...
This dangerous gamble had already cost Anna dearly once without her knowledge, leaving her with little left and a painful loss. Now, she simply didn't have the courage or resources to gamble again.
The air seemed frozen and time had stopped; the music gradually faded away, leaving only the night disturbed by heavy snowfall.
Anna felt her fingers had gone numb. She couldn't look into Park Chan-yeol's eyes any longer because doing so would plunge her into an unknown abyss. Last time she managed to escape by luck; this time, she feared she would be shattered. Anna averted her gaze; reason told her that she should smile now. So, a standard smile was forced onto her face as she said, "The gift will be delivered. Goodbye, Mr. Park Chan-yeol, Merry Christmas." After saying this, Anna entered her home without looking back, leaving only the silhouette of Park Chan-yeol wrapped in snow lingering in her mind...
