With the sudden turn of the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf, both the giant bear and Ye Tian were momentarily stunned. It was clear that the former was not a match for the giant bear, and there were no cliffs or other deadly obstacles ahead.
"What’s going on? Has it given up?" Ye Tian wondered as he looked at the panting yet fierce-looking Scorpion-Tailed Wolf, beginning to analyze the situation in his mind.
After both beasts came to a halt, they did not immediately attack but instead cautiously observed each other. This gave Ye Tian some time to think. Through simple analysis, he deduced several possible reasons for the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf's sudden stop in its flight.
First, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf might be too exhausted; continuing to run would be pointless, so it might as well turn back and fight to the death.
Second, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf still had some intelligence; it might have thought of a way to deal with the giant bear.
Third, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf sensed the presence of its kind nearby, indicating that there could be a pack of Scorpion-Tailed Wolves lurking in the vicinity.
Fourth, after running for several dozen miles, they had long left their original territory. The wolf might have sensed a greater threat ahead, prompting it to stop.
After careful consideration, Ye Tian dismissed the first two points. Although the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf was panting, according to records in the Spiritual Treasure Compendium, running several dozen miles was nothing for it. Therefore, exhaustion was unlikely. While it possessed some intelligence, it probably hadn't reached a level where it could devise strategies against stronger foes; otherwise, it wouldn't have been entangled with an opponent it couldn't defeat for so long.
With the first two points ruled out, a hint of excitement appeared on Ye Tian's face. Regardless of whether the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf's situation fell under one of the last two points, this presented an opportunity for him.
If there was indeed a Scorpion-Tailed Wolf Pack lurking nearby, there would certainly be a Scorpion-Tailed Wolf King among them. The other possibility is that there is an even more powerful entity ahead that caused the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf to choose to turn back and face death. This would imply that whatever lies ahead is even more terrifying than the giant bear and possesses an overwhelming presence capable of achieving victory without battle. If this were true, then this unknown entity might also yield the Spirit Beast Inner Pill that Ye Tian sought.
Thus, regardless of which scenario played out, there was a chance that Ye Tian's arduous journey of running several dozen miles would not be in vain.

The giant bear began to roar, its massive paws pounding against the ground as if demonstrating its power.

Before the wolf pack arrived, Ye Tian needed to protect this lone Scorpion-Tailed Wolf because once the giant bear killed it, it would quickly retreat. After all, it still possessed some intelligence and would not simply eat on the spot while waiting for the wolves to come and hunt it down. However, despite its intelligence, it lacked the ability to handle danger comprehensively; it would surely carry off the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf as future food. At that point, when the wolf pack caught wind of it, they would change their course to track it down. Following that Wolf King would become a troublesome endeavor for Ye Tian.
He had sent the giant bear flying with one palm but did not use all his strength—only five-tenths—because if he killed the giant bear, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf's behavior would likely mirror that of the previously analyzed giant bear. Ye Tian would inevitably face difficulties then.
Of course, Ye Tian had considered directly killing the giant bear and then following the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf back to its pack. But upon reflection, wolves have an extremely keen sense of smell; being alone could very well mean being ostracized by their kind or done intentionally. Therefore, if this wolf escaped danger, it might not choose to return to its pack but continue wandering in search of food. In that case, Ye Tian would have been too clever for his own good.
Thus, Ye Tian chose to assist the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf until its pack arrived; he believed this method was more stable and feasible.
After being struck by Ye Tian's palm, the giant bear flew backward and landed heavily on the ground with a loud thud. Since there were thick fallen leaves here, no dust was kicked up.

Due to its tough skin and flesh, combined with Ye Tian's lack of intent to take its life, the giant bear quickly got back up. However, at this moment, Ye Tian had already hidden himself again in the shadows. The giant bear could only roar in confusion a couple of times before redirecting its fury toward the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf.
The Scorpion-Tailed Wolf seemed greatly wronged as if framed for something it didn't do; at this moment, it tilted its head and looked in Ye Tian's hiding direction, its nostrils flaring as it clearly remembered Ye Tian's scent from their close encounter moments ago.

The giant bear continued to roar but suddenly quieted midway through as if recalling something. It lowered its head and glanced around before a glimmer of fear appeared in its dark eyes. With a powerful leap, it returned to where it had previously stopped.
This scene left Ye Tian quite puzzled. Judging by the reaction of the giant bear, it seemed to be greatly frightened. Of course, this fear was not due to the distant wolf pack, and there were no stronger creatures nearby. What could it be afraid of?
With doubts in his heart, he observed closely. For about a quarter of an hour afterward, Ye Tian kept a close watch on the movements of the two beasts, missing no details.
Being attentive brought rewards. Soon, Ye Tian discovered a common characteristic between them: marked by a broken tree trunk, neither dared to step beyond that line.
Earlier, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf had stopped here, and after being knocked back by Ye Tian beyond the range of the broken trunk, the giant bear immediately fled in terror. Additionally, during their fight, both had attempted to lure or directly strike at each other, indicating that crossing that broken trunk's boundary could lead to fatal consequences.
For them, that broken trunk served as a boundary; there seemed to be an invisible line on the ground that they dared not cross.
Thinking of this, Ye Tian focused his gaze on the dense forest beyond the broken trunk. However, there was nothing unusual there; it was still filled with towering ancient trees, blocking sunlight and casting shadows, even quieter than outside.
"Quiet..." Ye Tian muttered softly. After a moment, he suddenly exclaimed with excitement as if he had made a discovery: "That's it! It's too quiet there!"
In this dense primeval forest, excessive silence could only mean one thing: in this unknown area lay something that made all creatures hold their breath or simply avoid it altogether.
After this realization, Ye Tian chose a tall ancient tree and quickly climbed up. Once at the top, he was over twenty feet above the ground and looked out over the vast expanse of the Square Area below.
Due to his high position, Ye Tian could no longer see where the broken trunk was located. However, he remembered its approximate position and after some thought looked inward toward where it should be.
At first glance into the Square Area beyond the broken trunk, it appeared just like the dense forest outside. But after moving inward slightly, changes began to occur.
It was morning with excellent weather; the sunlight was bright and abundant. Yet as he gazed further inwards, he gradually entered a patch of darkness that grew deeper and thicker. The sunlight refracted faint black streams swirling around; looking further away revealed nothing but endless darkness akin to nightfall.
"This is miasma..." Ye Tian pondered with confusion before continuing to observe closely.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed a detail: amidst the occasionally flowing black mist were glimpses of tree canopies that were also quite large. This indicated that the pervasive black mist did not hinder tree growth; it likely wasn't miasma after all.
If it wasn't miasma but still possessed such density and spread over a wide area, what could have caused it?
Ye Tian fell into deep thought; however, this situation was too strange and he remained without answers for quite some time.
At this moment, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf had been fighting with the giant bear for quite a while. Due to the lack of assistance from Ye Tian, the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf had sustained multiple injuries. The most severe was its dragging right hind leg; it seemed barely attached by a thin layer of flesh and was not completely severed. The bone must have been crushed by one of the giant bear's powerful strikes.
A leg was broken, and the speed of the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf was greatly affected. Speed was its greatest asset, and it was estimated that it wouldn't last long before being hunted down by the giant bear.
"Ah, what a hassle!" Ye Tian sighed. He was deep in thought but had to divert his attention to save the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf; otherwise, he might lose track of the wolf pack.
Thinking this, Ye Tian prepared to descend, but just as he moved, a fierce scream came from a distance. By the sound of it, it was undoubtedly the Scorpion-Tailed Wolf.
