With the Cloud Token, Ye Tian and others successfully entered the inner circle of the Mission Board. Along the way, many people cast surprised glances at Ye Tian, as in their impression, there was no such young person among the holders of the Cloud Token.
Of course, there were a few who recognized Ye Tian; these individuals came from the Cloudscroll Pavilion. When Ye Tian passed by them, they would actively make way and greet him, knowing that he would politely respond due to his character. Receiving courtesy from a direct disciple holding a Cloud Token was not an ordinary matter in the eyes of others. Just for this reason, they would encounter fewer troubles related to identity during their tasks.
"Who is that?"
"That's our new direct disciple from the Cloudscroll Pavilion! Today seems to be his third day in the mountains." A regular disciple from the Cloudscroll Pavilion proudly explained to those around him.
"Oh... I wondered why I hadn't seen him before." The questioner spoke with an unmistakable tone of envy. The response from the Cloudscroll Pavilion disciple seemed casual but carried deeper implications. The term "new direct disciple" might sound unremarkable at first, but when associated with the Cloud Token, it became extraordinary.
There were many examples of individuals becoming direct disciples just three days after joining a sect, but none had ever held a Cloud Token within that short time frame.
Three days! In just three days to receive such importance; what if it were three years or thirty years? Not to mention becoming a Master of the Pavilion; it could even be said that becoming the Master of Yunhai Sect was not out of reach!
For such a prodigy, everyone inevitably felt a twinge of envy or even jealousy deep down.
However, while they envied him, they also had self-awareness and knew they could never reach that level. Thus, their focus naturally shifted to those around Ye Tian—first to the disciples of Cloudscroll Pavilion who had greeted him, and then to the two followers trailing behind Ye Tian, who clearly seemed out of place in such an environment.
Ye Tian seemed to sense the strange looks directed at Duan Liu and Bai Kuo from others and felt a flicker of displeasure rise within him.
"Dog Eyes Look Down on People!" he muttered under his breath. Ye Tian decisively turned around and, in front of everyone, handed the Cloud Token to Duan Liu and Bai Kuo with great respect, saying, "Brother Two, you go ahead first. I have some matters to attend to and will join you shortly."
"Oh..."
Ye Tian's actions drew an involuntary gasp from the crowd. The Cloud Token was an incredibly valuable item; for Ye Tian to casually hand it over to someone indicated what? It meant that those two behind him were not mere followers but existed as something even more precious than a Cloud Token—brothers!
As they received the Cloud Token, both nearly shed tears. Throughout their journey, they had endured disdainful glances from others. That disdain was unjust; it wasn't because people mistakenly thought they were Ye Tian's lackeys but rather because they resented not being Ye Tian's lackeys themselves...
Ultimately, those disdainful looks stemmed from envy and jealousy.
Bai Kuo was smarter than Duan Liu; he realized that Ye Tian's actions were meant to vent the frustrations of the two. He grabbed Duan Liu and raised the Cloud Token high, swaying as he stepped forward.
With the Cloud Token in hand, although everyone knew he was not the owner of the Cloud Token, they also recognized him as the brother of its owner. Wherever he went, people made way for them, and soon they had completely arrived in front of the Mission Board.
To buy time for the two, Ye Tian casually struck up a conversation with a disciple from Cloudscroll Pavilion. After seeing that they had arrived, he simply bid farewell and headed towards the Mission Board.
As soon as Ye Tian left, the disciple who had just spoken with him immediately became the focus of everyone's attention, as if they were asking: How did you manage to get close to such a person?
...
Ye Tian navigated through the crowd and quickly reunited with Bai Kuo and Duan Liu. The three then approached the Mission Board together and looked up to check the tasks.
While reviewing the tasks, Ye Tian could feel their grateful glances from time to time, but he chose not to speak. Their gratitude was enough; if he offered words of comfort, it would only make him seem superior.
At that moment, Duan Liu and Bai Kuo were not even focused on the Mission Board. Duan Liu, as a disciple of Cloudscroll Pavilion, was unaware that Ye Tian possessed a Cloud Token, let alone Bai Kuo, who studied at Azure Cloud Pavilion. Thus, when they saw Ye Tian take out the Cloud Token, they were deeply shocked—how could they have become friends with such a person?
This left them somewhat incredulous, but it paled in comparison to what happened next.
What was a Cloud Token? In Cloud Sea Sect, it represented absolute status. With just one Cloud Token, one could bring strangers up the mountain without undergoing inspection. This indicated an extraordinary level of trust; what did this trust signify?
It meant that anyone holding a Cloud Token was regarded as a pillar of Cloud Sea Sect. In the future, they could all potentially become symbols of Cloud Sea Sect, just like Xuanyuan Changfeng, like Qin Fufeng, like all those who represented Cloud Sea Sect—even like the elusive leader of their sect known only by reputation...
“Brother Duan, which task are you referring to?” Ye Tian scanned through the Mission Board but did not find any task that matched what Duan Liu mentioned.
Upon hearing this, Duan Liu focused his attention and looked up. After a moment, he pointed to a spot lower down and said, “There.”
Ye Tian followed his finger and saw that the task was quite inconspicuous; it was almost at the bottom of the list.
The Mission Board had clear divisions for tasks. At the top were golden tasks with the highest difficulty coefficient but also the most generous rewards—there were only three of these at the top. Next were red-lettered secondary tasks, around ten or so in number, with relatively lower rewards and risks. Following that were blue-lettered tasks—there were about forty or fifty of these for third-tier tasks. Lastly came black-lettered tasks; there were probably hundreds of them—small text jumbled together due to varying lengths of content.
Ye Tian scanned the area from top to bottom, but he didn't think much of the black-letter mission. He had assumed that since Duan Liu valued it so highly, it would at least be a blue-letter mission. To his surprise, it turned out to be the lowest-level black-letter mission.
"Is this it?" Ye Tian did not hide his indifference.
"Uh, yes, this is it..." Duan Liu did not feel that his choice was lowly; in his view, this mission was quite difficult.
"Cough, cough... Duan Liu, you really are a bit embarrassing this time..." Bai Kuo couldn't bear to watch any longer. Their strengths were similar, both being early Four-Stage Martial Artists. Based on the mission's description, he thought completing this task shouldn't be as challenging as Duan Liu made it seem.
"No, you don't understand. The real difficulty isn't the mission itself, but..." Duan Liu lowered his voice and pointed with his finger to a group of people not far to their left.
Bai Kuo and Ye Tian looked over and saw an open area where a crowd surrounded two richly dressed disciples, chattering about something.
There were many disciples taking on missions, so to accommodate them all for simultaneous viewing, the Mission Board extended for a full Hundred Zhang, with repeated mission information recorded every ten feet, totaling a hundred entries.
Even so, those who could squeeze to the front to check the missions were either influential figures like Ye Tian or exceptionally strong individuals who commanded respect even from Cloud Token holders.
However, Ye Tian couldn't discern what kind of background the group Duan Liu pointed out had. The only thing he could tell was that they seemed quite arrogant; despite being fewer than ten people, they occupied all the space within three feet.
"Who are they? What does it have to do with us taking missions?" Ye Tian asked Duan Liu in confusion after observing them for a while.
"They are from the Cloud-Drifting Pavilion," Duan Liu said mysteriously. Even with Ye Tian beside him, he spoke in a low voice as if afraid of being overheard.
"I know," Ye Tian nodded. Thunderstorm was one of the Cloud Token holders from the Cloud-Drifting Pavilion, so he recognized their attire. Disciples of the Cloud-Drifting Pavilion had a distinct characteristic: their clothing had to be luxurious.
"How do you know?"
"I just know. Now tell me what’s wrong with them," Ye Tian pressed on without explaining further.
"They're arrogant and not to be trifled with!" Duan Liu lamented but still hadn't explained how this related to their mission-taking.
Duan Liu's incessant chatter reminded Ye Tian of an old acquaintance. Once upon a time, he had someone like that by his side, who would ramble on every day, always talking about things unrelated to the main topic.
"Elder Brother Five..." Ye Tian felt a pang of sorrow. Elder Brother Five, who had accompanied him during the extermination of bandits at Black Wind Stronghold, was no longer around. Ye Tian couldn't even find his complete body...
"Who?" Duan Liu asked in confusion.
"It's nothing, just thinking of an old friend," Ye Tian replied, trying to control his emotions and not dwell on the past in front of others.
Duan Liu responded with an "oh" and pointed again to a group of people on the left. "Let me tell you, did you see those two?"
Ye Tian followed his gaze and saw two disciples from Cloud-Drifting Pavilion, roughly the same age as him, surrounded by a crowd.
"What about them?" Ye Tian felt nothing particularly special about them.
"They are the sons of Cloud Pavilion Master Qiu Tiande," Bai Kuo interjected, unable to tolerate Duan Liu's irrelevant comments any longer.
"That's right! Although these brothers don't have Cloud Tokens, their status is worth far more than those tokens," Duan Liu couldn't help but continue.
"So what?" Ye Tian raised an eyebrow and asked. He vaguely sensed what Duan Liu meant; it seemed these two lords' sons specialized in bullying ordinary disciples.
