It was nearly four o'clock, and Ye Tian and Yue Lingwei were engaged in a lively conversation, showing no signs of sleepiness. They decided not to sleep, as time was short and they were waiting for the arrival of the assassin.
Yue Lingwei and his companions had also come down the mountain to undertake a mission. He had accepted a Red Mission, which was relatively difficult to complete. Moreover, the destination was quite far, so there was no rush at that moment.
As dawn approached, the other members began to feel drowsy and went upstairs to rest. Soon, only Ye Tian and Yue Lingwei remained at the table.
After about another hour, a surge of killing intent finally appeared within the vicinity.
"They're here," Ye Tian said, stopping his playful fiddling with the wine cup and downing its contents in one gulp.
Yue Lingwei possessed the strength of Martial Unity Definition, but his perception extended only so far. During their earlier conversation, Ye Tian claimed to be a Four-Stage Martial Artist, yet he could also sense the aura from beyond their immediate surroundings. How was that possible?
Yue Lingwei felt a slight surprise but did not ask any questions.
"There's only one person..." Yue Lingwei focused his senses for a moment, frowning.
"Indeed, there is only one person," Ye Tian replied, somewhat puzzled. Was this person underestimating his strength or even looking down on Yue Lingwei? What kind of power would one need to have such confidence while being alone?
The two exchanged glances and saw a hint of confusion in each other's eyes.
The aura moved extremely quickly, reaching outside the Hundred Zhang Inn in just a few breaths. Ye Tian pondered internally; this speed was likely comparable to that of someone fully exerting themselves with Yuqi Tayan Jue.
"He's a master," Yue Lingwei nodded slightly, his expression turning serious.
"I'll go give a warning," Ye Tian seemed to suddenly remember something and quickly headed upstairs.
Yue Lingwei remained silent, picking up the wine jug and finishing the remaining wine in one go.
Moments later, Ye Tian returned from upstairs, nodded at Yue Lingwei, and then both figures flickered as they swiftly dashed outside the inn.
Ye Tian had just gone to calm everyone down, as this person was highly skilled. If a battle broke out later, those who were not strong enough would not only be unable to help but would also become a burden. It was better to draw the enemy away and return to find everyone after the situation was handled.
After leaving the inn, the two hurried eastward, while the approaching presence also changed direction, chasing after them towards the east.
"They're coming for us," Ye Tian said softly, feeling slightly relieved. This way, the people at the inn would be safe.
"Let's wait for him here." Yue Lingwei stopped her Footsteps. By now, they had already run over three miles and entered a vast grassy area.
Ye Tian nodded. The terrain here was open, making it impossible to hide. When the battle began, it would be easier for them to cooperate.
"Here." Yue Lingwei reached out to hand something to Ye Tian.
He took it and found it was a flask of wine. Ye Tian smiled and drank half of it in one go before returning it to Yue Lingwei. She tilted her head back and finished it off, then smashed the flask on the ground.
In the distance, a black dot appeared, rapidly enlarging until they could see the figure clearly.
The newcomer was a middle-aged man in his thirties, wearing a blood-red robe. He held a long sword in his right hand, which he gripped backward, and his face bore a sinister expression.
"It's him..." Yue Lingwei seemed to recognize the person, her tone slightly surprised.
"Do you know him, Brother Yue?" Ye Tian asked with a frown, noticing that Yue Lingwei not only sounded surprised but also looked more serious.
"Blood Sea Roaring, Sword Sweeping the Sky," Yue Lingwei softly uttered these eight words as if recalling some past events.
"Blood Sea Roaring..." Ye Tian repeated quietly, but before he could finish his sentence, they were interrupted by the newcomer.
"Yue Lingwei, long time no see!" The man paused his movement and stopped thirty feet away from them.
"Sword Sweeping the Sky..." Ye Tian noticed first not the striking blood-red robe but rather the long sword held backward in the man's hand.
Before them was a long sword, known as the Sword Body, slender and about five feet in length. It shimmered with a watery brilliance; though its glow was soft, it was incredibly eye-catching, evoking a sense that it could cleave through the void with a single strike.
"Heh heh, Left Sword Star, last time you got away, but it won't be so easy this time," Yue Lingwei said with a smile, yet an overwhelming aura surged forth from him like a tidal wave.
"Why would I leave?" replied the man in the red robe, referred to as Left Sword Star by Yue Lingwei, with a cold and sinister laugh.
His laughter was grating, reminiscent of Wang Weiyang's cruel laughter when he transformed into a Raccoon, carrying a similar malevolence that seemed otherworldly.
"This little friend is Ye Tian, right?" Left Sword Star remarked in a mocking tone, sizing up Ye Tian.
Ye Tian did not respond but focused intently on him. Upon closer inspection, he was taken aback; the man's face was an eerie shade of pale white, while his lips were a vivid red, as if he had just consumed fresh blood...
"This person is quite peculiar; he must not be of the Martial Sovereign level," Ye Tian thought to himself, instinctively categorizing him as belonging to the Blood Sect.
"Left Sword Star, have your injuries healed from last time?" Yue Lingwei tilted his head, his tone laced with disdain.
Left Sword Star responded with a cold laugh, "And you? Have your intestines been reattached?"
"Such strength..." Ye Tian's heart jolted. Yue Lingwei possessed the power of Martial Unity Definition. From their conversation, it seemed they had previously fought and both ended up injured; Left Sword Star was unaware of where he had been hurt, while Yue Lingwei had suffered a gaping wound to his abdomen.
"Ye Tian, when we fight later, you must be cautious. From what I know of him, he will definitely target you first," Yue Lingwei said while maintaining eye contact with Left Sword Star, his words conveyed through Secret Sound Technique.
"Rest assured," Ye Tian nodded slightly.
"What are you whispering about?" Left Sword Star sneered. He had discerned from the subtle fluctuations in Yue Lingwei's gaze that they were communicating secretly.
Ye Tian was once again astonished; this man not only possessed deep strength but also cunning that should not be underestimated.
"Left Sword Star, we have been rivals for quite some time now. In our three encounters, you harmed my five junior brothers. Heh heh, today we shall settle this once and for all," Yue Lingwei said lightly, yet anyone could feel the hatred woven into his words.
"Hahaha..." Left Sword Star laughed heartily, though the laughter remained sinister. After laughing for a while, his tone suddenly turned venomous as he said, "You harmed your five junior brothers? What were you thinking when you slaughtered my entire clan for those Contribution Points? That was three hundred and twenty-eight people!"
"You're talking nonsense! Can your brothers even be called people? Your Blood Sword Sect is steeped in evil, reaching a point where it defies natural justice. For some trivial sword sacrifice, you turned the Square Area into a place with no survivors for thirty miles. Is this something a human can do?" Yue Lingwei fumed, clenching his fists tightly, making them crack.
"Hiss..." Upon hearing Yue Lingwei's words, Ye Tian couldn't help but gasp. Slaughtering for thirty miles—how many innocent lives had been lost...
A glint of coldness flashed in Left Sword Star's eyes as he coldly replied, "Is there really a distinction in killing? Killing is killing; when we kill, it's evil, but when you kill, it's righteous? Hahaha, is that what you call natural justice?"
"What you call natural justice is merely the law of the jungle," Left Sword Star said as he reversed his sword and examined it closely.
"You're talking nonsense! You kill innocents indiscriminately; we eradicate evil!" Yue Lingwei stepped forward, becoming increasingly agitated.
"Hahaha, what a great claim of indiscriminate killing and eradicating evil." Left Sword Star laughed maniacally, but suddenly stopped mid-laugh. His eyes flashed with a cold light as he stared at Yue Lingwei and said, "Do you think you can judge good and evil in this world? Do you think you control the heavenly laws? Don't overestimate yourself; you're just a dog used by Cloud Sea Sect to expand its influence!"
Upon hearing this, Yue Lingwei was instantly consumed by rage. With a powerful step forward, he shot out like a meteor.
Left Sword Star curled his lips in disdainful laughter. With a flick of his wrist, a blood-red sword aura tore through the air and slashed toward Yue Lingwei.
Seeing this, Yue Lingwei let out a furious roar. His fists erupted with dazzling white light; one fist shattered the sword aura while the other aimed directly at Left Sword Star's head.
Both of their speeds surpassed Ye Tian's. The thirty-zhang distance was crossed in the blink of an eye, and they were already locked in combat.
Ye Tian did not intervene immediately because the gap in strength was too great; he couldn't find an appropriate opportunity. Moreover, there was another reason—Left Sword Star's last words had indeed sent a shiver down his spine.
A dog of Cloud Sea Sect...
Hearing this made Ye Tian feel a sudden chill—not for himself but for Yue Lingwei, who was fighting desperately before him.
Just as Left Sword Star said, what is right and wrong? What is good and evil?
Yue Lingwei is uncompromising and has almost offended everyone in the Cloud Sea Sect. What is he pursuing?
It is nothing more than adherence to the rules of the Cloud Sea Sect. But in the end? The notorious Qiu Family's Twin Young Masters continue to act recklessly every day, and even the assassin before him was hired by them. What can Yue Lingwei do?
Hiring an assassin to kill the sect's Chief Disciple, is this in accordance with the rules of the Cloud Sea Sect? Shouldn't such actions warrant execution as a warning to others?
However, the reality is quite different. The reason the Qiu Family's Twin Young Masters can act with impunity is because of their father, Qiu Tiande, who is the Cloud Pavilion Master of the Cloud Sea Sect.
What kind of person is Qiu Tiande? What role does he play in the Cloud Sea Sect?
While Yue Lingwei is indeed a talented youth, can he be compared to Qiu Tiande? It goes without saying that he cannot.
Therefore, no matter how hard he tries, some things will never change. Because he is merely a pawn. Of course, everyone is a pawn, but Qiu Tiande is an important piece at the center of the board.
“Sigh...” Ye Tian feels a deep sorrow for Yue Lingwei. In this world of schemes, conflicts, and killings, it is ultimately people like Yue Lingwei who are buried.
This is the rule: what you believe may very well be what buries you.
“Heh heh, it seems I have to join in as well.” Ye Tian chuckles bitterly at himself. He understands the reasoning; in fact, he could have easily placated the Qiu Family's Twin Young Masters, but he chose not to. Why?
Because a tree needs its bark, and a person lives on their spirit!
