Zhong Kui's Diary
The three of us said goodbye to Qing Qiu and Mo Mo, and instead of rushing back, we first found a place to discuss. Dealing with Jin Xinghua is a bit troublesome; as long as he doesn't confess, there's nothing we can do. There's no law that punishes ghosts for committing crimes. Moreover, without solid evidence, if Fatty and I just barged into the police station claiming a ghost committed murder, we would probably be treated as lunatics and thrown out.
In the end, we decided to start with Li Chao. The person who argued with him was very likely Jin Xinghua—no, it was definitely Jin Xinghua; there couldn't be anyone else.
After sending Jin Yang back to the Jin Family, everyone in the Jin Family looked at me with complex expressions. There was admiration but also awe; being able to bring back someone who had mysteriously disappeared is quite impressive.
After hugging his parents, Jin Yang pulled Li Chao aside and told him about Taozi. Li Chao looked as if he had been struck by lightning, stunned for a while before suddenly shouting and rushing out of the room.
When Jin Xinghua saw us, his expression was particularly complex—part fear, part confusion—as if he was extremely shocked by Jin Yang's appearance. He surely knew that Jin Yang had been confined by Qing Qiu and the others in Rainflower New City. Now that we had brought Jin Yang back, it was highly likely that we already knew about his situation.
We then explained the sequence of events, of course, after processing it ourselves. It was simply that Jin Yang came to his senses and found himself in a room; how Taozi jumped off the building and how we found him were all elaborated upon in detail. Our goal was merely to fill Jin Xinghua's mind with doubts so that he would inquire about Qing Qiu. Meanwhile, Qing Qiu and Mo Mo had already promised me to stay out of it. This way, Jin Xinghua would be thrown into disarray, allowing us to take advantage of the situation.
I had already contacted Lingfeng; he would help take care of Li Chao. Taking care meant he would find a secluded Detention Room and come up with an excuse to detain Li Chao for one night. By nightfall, it would be my turn along with Fatty to make our move—scaring people is what I do best; I won't scare him to death.
That night, at Star City River Branch.
The River District is located on the outskirts of Star City. Originally developed as a high-tech zone, it later fell apart when some investors could not reach an agreement with the government regarding certain interests, leading several major investors to withdraw. Naturally, those investors could not sustain a high-tech zone on their own. In the end, the government sold the land to some Real Estate Developers who built a few scattered areas. Although there were significant investments in real estate advertising and many people appeared to be buying houses on the surface, they were mostly speculators; the entire River District remained sparsely populated.
The River Division is situated in the southern part of the River District. This piece of land was taken by Police Station Director Zhou from the Environmental Protection Bureau. Originally, there were plans to build a hotel with a shopping center and a forty-story office building next door. After the investors withdrew, the division stood alone in this area, which led Director Zhou to be mocked by Environmental Protection Bureau Director Niu.
The division also built dormitories, but aside from a few background-less college students, everyone else lived in the city. The entire division was quiet at night; in Lingfeng's words, this place is so deserted that even ghosts don't come here.
Fatty and I were driven in by Lingfeng. Although Lingfeng works at the Police Station, who doesn’t know him within the Public Security Team? After getting out of the car, Lingfeng pointed at the Detention Room and said, "I'm going to Old Song's office to check on international news online; call me when you're done." With that, he went upstairs.
International news? If Master Cang's documentary counts as international news, then he isn't lying.
The Detention Room is next to the duty room on the first floor, and there are two rooms in total. One of them has its light on. Lingfeng had already greeted the officer in the duty room, and the Young Man was standing at the door, smiling and waving at us.
Carrying the props, I walked over to chat with him for a bit. The Young Man's surname is Kong. He cheerfully informed us about the location of the circuit breaker switch, looking quite excited, as if he planned to observe. I advised, "Brother Kong, it would be better for you to go to the restroom. Just in case something happens, you wouldn't want to be present, right?"
Kong showed a thoughtful expression on his face and finally gave me a thumbs up: "You really think ahead!" After that, he returned to the duty room to grab his phone and headed to the restroom in another building.
Fatty made a gesture at me, indicating that the performance was about to start, and then pulled down the circuit breaker switch. At the moment Fatty cut off the power, I had already slipped into the Detention Room wearing a black robe. Due to the sudden change in lighting, for that brief second, no one could see anything.
A scream suddenly echoed from the Detention Room, and it was Li Chao's voice.
Outside, Fatty was once again witnessing a miraculous moment.
A ghostly figure floated directly into the Detention Room through the window, drifting around on the wall; this was a Mini Projector.
There were faint sounds of wind blowing and whispers, along with low laughter; this was from a type of Recorder.
These were just appetizers before the main course. The highlight was my ghostly appearance inside the Detention Room, which nearly scared Li Chao out of his wits.
Indeed, I could appear out of nowhere in front of Li Chao. This trick had fooled countless buildings before and had never failed.
It was actually quite simple; it was like performing magic. First, I needed to draw the audience's attention with exaggerated movements of the floating ghostly figure so that all of Li Chao's focus was on the wall. Meanwhile, I slipped off my black robe. At that moment, the ghostly figure controlled by Fatty quickly moved towards me and then turned off the Projector. Just like that, I appeared like a ghost.
“Li Chao!” I held a hard candy in my mouth, which made my words come out unclear.
“Ah! Ah!” Li Chao exclaimed in shock.
What the hell, although Lingfeng had greeted the duty officer, there were still rookie cops in the dormitory, right? What if they rushed over and clumsily asked how the plan was going to be executed?
I stepped forward and grabbed him by the throat. There was a technique to this. The shoes I was wearing had Roller heels, so I didn’t even need to bend my knees to slide him across. In the darkness, it looked like I was gliding. My palm had its own tricks; I wore a long glove made of metal wire on my left hand, and behind my waist was an ice pack filled with ice cubes. I first put my hand into the ice pack, then reached out to grab him. My palm was naturally cold and stiff. As for the water stains, I didn’t care much; I believed he wouldn’t notice.
Li Chao immediately struggled to breathe, desperately grabbing at my wrist. I chuckled darkly, holding him for about twenty seconds before withdrawing and inserting my left hand back into the ice pack. If I didn’t pull back soon, the glove would lose its chill.
“Li Chao!” I continued to call out slowly.
“What… what… do you want…” Li Chao stuttered, his teeth chattering.
“Someone in our Underworld actually did something harmful. After my investigation, the matter concerning the Jin Family is related to you!” As soon as I finished speaking, I felt a jolt of panic; I had let slip ‘someone in our Underworld actually…’ Wasn’t that a slip?
Fortunately, Li Chao didn’t catch that; he only said, “It… has nothing to do with me!”
“What do you mean it has nothing to do with you?” I asked ominously.
“This is all something Second Master Jin ordered me to do!” Li Chao replied tremulously.
“What did Jin Xinghua make you do?” I shouted sternly.
"He gave me a number and told me to contact this person to kill Jin Zhao! And I... and I..." Li Chao seemed to have let something slip.
"And you what?" I asked ominously.
"It has nothing to do with me! It has nothing to do with me! Shih Chih-Yang deserves it!" Li Chao suddenly shouted.
"Hehehe!" I chuckled darkly, my left hand darting out like lightning to grip Li Chao's throat.
Li Chao grabbed my hand, struggling desperately, nodding his head repeatedly while making choking sounds.
I released my grip and shouted, "If you pull any more tricks, I'll strangle you!"
"It was when I was calling that killer that I deliberately spoke ambiguously. In the Jin Family, Jin Zhao, Young Master Yang, and Shih Chih-Yang all have similar heights and builds. Second Master Jin is older, and Young Master Yang was in detention at that time. As long as I made Jin Zhao slightly older, the killer would mistakenly think Shih Chih-Yang was Jin Zhao," Li Chao rasped. "That beast, Shih Chih-Yang, actually laid hands on my Peach!"
So there was such a subplot; no wonder Wuling City killed the wrong person. It wasn't just because of the cloth placed on Shih Chih-Yang.
"Why did you become an accomplice for Jin Xinghua?" I suddenly asked curiously.
"He's not human. He used the tricks he played with my gas expenses to threaten me and even knew I had a mistress outside, threatening to tell Peach!" Li Chao said weakly.
"What were you arguing about that night?" I continued to ask. In fact, knowing that Jin Xinghua had instructed Li Chao to contact the killer was already enough evidence, but since we were idle anyway, we might as well extract some more information.
"I asked him if he had taken Peach away, but he wouldn't admit it!" Li Chao replied.
"Is that it? Nothing else?" I stretched out my hand and curled my fingers in a threatening manner.
"That's all, really!" Li Chao shouted hoarsely.
It seemed there was indeed nothing more. With a lightning-fast grab of my left hand, I pulled Li Chao in front of me. I couldn't tell what expression he had, but I swiftly struck his neck from behind, and he immediately fainted.
What a joke; if he didn't faint, how would I get out?
I stepped outside and called Fatty to pack up and leave. Just then, Kong walked over from a distance. We greeted him, and he smiled as he asked, "All set?"
"Yeah, all set!" I replied with a smile. "Sorry to keep you waiting."
Kong chuckled and said, "More like squatting for a long time!" With that, he went to pull the power switch and glanced at the Detention Room, asking, "Everything okay?"
"He fainted; he'll wake up in a bit!"
"Alright then!" The officer waved at us and went into the duty room.
