Zhong Kui's Diary
Lingfeng and Fatty were both astonished to see my expression and quickly asked me what was wrong.
I took a deep breath and told them everything I had seen in the chat records. After listening, Fatty burst into laughter, saying, "Don't you see that TV dramas always have a subtitle at the beginning that says, 'Any resemblance to actual persons is purely coincidental'? The scripts written by screenwriters are based on real life. Besides, it's very common for a boss to have an affair with a secretary; office romances are just too ordinary. A company without conflicts is definitely not a good company! As for Lingfeng's girlfriend Li Xinyan..."
Turning to see Lingfeng's face was not looking good, Fatty scratched his head and said awkwardly, "Buddy, it's just a coincidence!"
I also tried to comfort him, saying, "If you're worried, just don't let your girlfriend go."
Lingfeng's face turned even paler: "She left this morning."
I snatched the beer from Lingfeng's hand and shouted, "Then hurry up and call her!"
There’s an old saying that concern leads to chaos, and another that the onlooker sees the game; Lingfeng was a perfect example of this. When it came to his girlfriend, he immediately became flustered and even forgot to make the simplest phone call.
After my shout, Lingfeng quickly came to his senses, picked up the phone, and dialed a number. After a while, he frowned and said, "No one is answering."
"At this time, she might be taking a shower. Call back in five minutes. Fatty, check the fastest way to get to Zixu Mountain ski resort," I instructed Fatty, then called the boss to settle the bill.
"Bro, it's only over a hundred kilometers to Zixu Mountain. Can't we just take Lingfeng's car?" Fatty looked at me wide-eyed.
Uh, that's true.
After Lingfeng dialed Li Xinyan's number again with no answer, the three of us immediately set off in the car. On the way, Lingfeng kept trying to call Li Xinyan, but there was still no answer. The more this happened, the worse Lingfeng's expression became.
We sped along and arrived at Zixu Mountain Hotel around midnight. Previously, Li Xinyan had called Lingfeng to inform him of her hotel name and room number.
The three of us rushed straight to the hotel lobby elevator. Our momentum was so fierce that a security guard attempted to stop us but was kicked aside by Lingfeng. Following suit, Fatty shouted intimidatingly, "Police are on duty! If you say another word, you're done for!"
Two elevators, one stopped on the fourth floor while the other was ascending. Li Xinyan's room was on the second floor. Lingfeng rushed into the stairwell, and the three of us quickly ran to room 10 on the second floor.
Knock, knock, knock.
Lingfeng knocked hard on the door. I suspected that if no one answered soon, Lingfeng would break it down.
"Who is it?" A woman's voice came from inside.
"It's me, Lingfeng! Open the door quickly!" Lingfeng shouted.
There was silence for a moment behind the door, then it opened. Lingfeng rushed in and yelled, "Xinyan, Li Xinyan! Are you there?"
Fatty and I followed him inside. The room contained two girls in pajamas, who looked pale with shock at our sudden entrance.
"Nian Nian, Ami, where's Xinyan?" Lingfeng yelled at the two girls.
I quickly stepped forward and pulled Lingfeng back, whispering, "Bro, this is just a script; it might not be what you think."
Lingfeng paused for a moment, took a few deep breaths to calm himself down, and turned to one of the short-haired girls, asking hesitantly, "Ami, wasn't Xinyan with you?"
The short-haired girl Ami was speechless, stammering without being able to form words.
Lingfeng became anxious again and turned to the other girl with a larger chest, urgently asking, "Nian Nian, where's Xinyan?"
Nian Nian gritted her teeth and said, "Xinyan went missing this afternoon at the ski resort!"
"Did you call the police?" Lingfeng grabbed Nian Nian's shirt and pulled her closer.
"No... no, I thought she just went somewhere else and would be back soon," Nian Nian said, a bit flustered.
Lingfeng staggered and raised his hand to slap her across the face. With a loud smack, Nian Nian was knocked onto the bed. "What the hell? You didn't think to call the police about something this serious?"
Then, as if remembering something, he rushed forward and grabbed Nian Nian again. "Did you do this on purpose?"
"Let go! Lingfeng, you bastard, let me go!" Nian Nian's clothes were in disarray from Lingfeng's grip, and she couldn't help but feel both embarrassed and anxious.
I wanted Fatty to close the door while I pulled Lingfeng away. "Lingfeng, calm down. It's more important to report this and find her first; we can deal with them later."
Lingfeng released his grip and pushed Nian Nian back onto the bed, pointing at her. "If anything happens to Xinyan, I'll kill you! And you too, Ami!" He pointed at Ami before finally taking out his phone.
I wasn't sure about the internal reporting procedures, but I knew that after Lingfeng made a call, within ten minutes, three officers from the local police station arrived, one of whom was the deputy chief. Upon entering, he shouted, "Ling Team! Director Huang is in the countryside and can't make it right now. I'm Long; I'm the deputy chief of Zixu Mountain Police Station. Just call me Long."
Damn, this guy must be in his forties or so? He wants Lingfeng to call him Long? Why not just call him Dragon instead? At the same time, I couldn't help but marvel at how powerful connections can be. When Deputy Chief Long shook my hand and introduced himself, I was even more stunned; his full name was actually Dragon Stand-in.
Next, Deputy Chief Long quickly formulated a search plan. No matter what, they needed to understand the situation before proceeding. It was pitch dark in the middle of the night without professional search equipment; it was absolutely impossible to enter the mountains.
The other two officers weren't idle either. Following Lingfeng's instructions, they took Nian Nian and Ami to the bathroom for isolation and interrogation, using both scolding and threats—playing good cop and bad cop—and soon managed to get information from the two girls. It really was just like a script: Nian Nian and Ami had encouraged Li Xinyan to explore deep into the forest, seized her phone when they had the chance, and then pushed her down a slope before hurriedly returning.
After hearing this, Lingfeng trembled all over, unsure whether it was from anger or worry for his girlfriend. Without saying a word, he charged at the two girls who screamed in terror until we pulled him away. He paced anxiously around the room.
We all understood his concern; it was freezing cold outside, and a girl alone in the wilderness overnight was unimaginable.
As dawn broke with a dim light, Lingfeng called for Fatty and me to set off. Deputy Chief Long immediately intervened, stating that search equipment would arrive shortly and that it wasn't safe for us to head up without it. I smiled and took a running leap into action, performing some parkour moves around the room that left everyone stunned. After a moment, Deputy Chief Long gave me a thumbs-up and instructed two officers to follow us.
The morning chill was biting cold; it felt like knives cutting against our faces. Fortunately, Deputy Chief Long had gotten each of us earmuffs—probably borrowed from someone at the hotel—decorated with various cartoon designs featuring Big Bad Wolf, Bald Qiang, Doraemon, and Rogue Rabbit; each person received one with no choice in style.
After some negotiation, the four of us took the cable car to the mountain top, then followed the direction indicated by Nian Nian towards another peak. After about two hours, we arrived at the slope where Nian Nian was located. Standing on the slope, I was astonished; it must be at least a sixty-degree incline with a drop of at least three hundred meters. Looking down, everything below was a white blur, and nothing was visible.
If Li Xinyan were pushed down from here, she would absolutely not be able to climb back up by herself. Moreover, spending a night in this wilderness could have dire consequences. I glanced at Lingfeng's expression and didn't dare to speak; everyone in the group understood that Li Xinyan was likely in grave danger.
"I want to go down and take a look!" Lingfeng suddenly said while standing at the edge of the slope.
"No way! We have to wait for the rescue team to bring ropes and tools. It's all white down there; who knows how deep the snow is!" Although this ski resort is partly natural and partly artificial, I couldn't let Lingfeng take that risk.
Lingfeng seemed determined, continuously bending down and stretching his legs to warm up.
"Damn it, I'm not going down either. Someone will be coming up soon; we'll go down together then." I cursed without caring if anyone else was around and moved closer to Lingfeng, intending to stop this fool.
"You guys wait! The sooner we find Xinyan, the more chance she has to survive!" Before Lingfeng finished speaking, I lunged at him.
It seemed Lingfeng had been anticipating my move; as I lunged forward, he turned and jumped down the slope. I only managed to grab onto Lingfeng's leg in mid-air, and with his momentum, we both tumbled down together.
Cursing under my breath, I let go of Lingfeng as we slid rapidly downwards. I didn't even know where my ear protection had gone; all I could hear was the wind howling past my ears while everything in front of me was just a blur of white rushing away behind us.
Fortunately, with the thick snow and a bit of luck, we rolled and crawled all the way to the bottom of the Gorge without getting seriously hurt. I vaguely heard Fatty shouting from above on the slope but couldn't make out what he was saying. Standing up, I took out my phone to call Fatty. The signal wasn't great, and the call was choppy, but I finally managed to clarify that Lingfeng and I would search first while they waited for the rescue team to come down together later.
Lingfeng smiled at me: "Zheng Nan, sorry for dragging you into this!"
I rolled my eyes: "What good does that do? Let's get searching quickly."
Fortunately, it hadn't snowed again since last night until this morning, so we could vaguely see a trail of footprints winding ahead. We followed the footprints to a sheltered area in the Gorge and were shocked to see a large human-shaped mound of snow.
Before we could approach it, a familiar background music filled the air, followed by several familiar voices.
"Airplanes have wings!"
"Don't!"
"Go!"
...
I exchanged a glance with Lingfeng, both of us a bit dumbfounded. We moved behind a snow pile and saw a pair of eyes peeking out from the snow, along with a gloved hand holding a Tablet. Damn it, someone was actually playing cards here.
Lingfeng shouted and rushed forward, quickly brushing away the snow from the top of the pile. Li Xinyan's surprised face immediately appeared. Upon seeing Lingfeng, she screamed, tossed the Tablet aside, and crawled out from the snow pile, tightly hugging Lingfeng and crying loudly.
Watching the two, my eyes felt a bit sore, and I cursed, "Damn it, I was all set for an adventure, and you didn't even give me a chance. You're protecting yourself so well; isn't that a bit stealing the spotlight?"
Li Xinyan poked her head out from Lingfeng's embrace and stuck her tongue out at me. "It's common sense to stay warm in a snow pile, okay?"
After we returned to Star City, Nian Nian and Ami were taken to the police station. Out of curiosity about the situation, I asked Lingfeng for a copy of the interrogation record. I had no idea that this would be difficult for ordinary people. Anyway, Lingfeng casually handed it to me, and I took it without much thought; I don't like to overcomplicate things.
After reading the record, I couldn't help but frown and said, "Lingfeng, this record seems a bit unreasonable."
