Zhong Kui's Diary
"Who are you?" I suddenly felt overwhelmed. "Is Guo'er from the Yang Family?"
"That's right, Yang Guo'er is not a branch; she is the legitimate heir of the Yang Family!" Tang Zian said emphatically.
No wonder when I joked with Guo'er on the train, her expression seemed a bit off. No wonder when I called Tang Zian, he was worried about Guo'er being kidnapped; he wouldn't dare do that. It turns out Guo'er really is from a prestigious family.
Wait, if Guo'er has such a significant background, who would have the guts to kidnap her? Also, how is it that she is considered part of the "red third generation" yet still works as a private doctor for the Jin Family, without even a bodyguard?
I voiced my doubts, and Tang Zian shook his head. "I’m not sure about that; there must be another reason."
"Could it be that someone from the Ma Family kidnapped Guo'er on the side?" After thinking it over, I felt this was the most likely scenario.
"The chances of that are slim. The Ma Family and the Yang Family are local powers in Moon City; their conflicts won't shake the foundations above them. However, if they were to kidnap Guo'er, it would involve the core lineage of the family. Such a level of conflict would require overwhelming force to completely crush the other side; otherwise, retaliation would be fierce, which could impact the country significantly. Neither side would want to see that. So while the Ma Family could uproot the Yang Family in Moon City, they wouldn’t dare to kidnap Yang Guo'er." Tang Zian's explanation left me somewhat confused; this kind of matter probably needed Lingfeng to fully understand.
"Of course, we can't rule out that possibility," Tang Zian continued. "Given how aggressively the Ma Family has moved to seize control of Moon City, it's possible that they are already gearing up for something."
After all this talk, it felt like nonsense. I stood up and walked a couple of steps. "Zi'an, who is in charge of the Ma Family in Moon City?"
Tang Zian looked at me in surprise. "Zheng Nan, you’re not thinking of kidnapping him, are you?"
"How could I? I'm not stupid; I just want to see if there's a chance for Lingfeng to greet him!" I looked at Tang Zian in astonishment.
"Oh, the head of the Ma Family in Moon City is Ma Xiao, who is also Ma Zhenkai's father. To put it simply, Ma Xiao is a descendant of that person's uncle and has two sons: Ma Zhenkai and Ma Zhenxuan, along with an adopted daughter named Zhu Yan." Tang Zian recounted this as if he were listing family members.
"Is this Moon City or a zoo? All these pigs, horses, and sheep are coming out!" Fatty laughed from the side but quickly realized that his comment was inappropriate at this moment and cleared his throat to fall silent.
Ma Xiao? Just as I was about to call Lingfeng, my phone rang—a strange call with no number displayed.
I answered, "Hello..." A synthesized voice came through, and my first instinct was that it was a scam call—something like a court summons or customs inspection. Just as I was about to hang up, I heard a chuckle on the line: "Zhong Zhengnan?"
The mechanical synthesized voice mixed with a chuckle was an odd combination. The other party called my name again, and I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I waited for them to continue.
"How rude, you really have no manners. Didn't your mother teach you to respond kindly when someone greets you?" The voice on the other end had no inflection, yet it still made such a joke, which made me particularly uncomfortable.
"Who are you?" I asked coldly, feeling extremely upset about Yang Guo'er's disappearance.
"You were just chatting with me and now you're pretending not to know me? I didn't expect you to turn on me faster than flipping a page; it's truly heartbreaking. Well, I'm Isolated from the World," the synthesized voice chuckled.
"Isolated from the World?" I was stunned for a moment before asking, "What do you want from me?"
"Isn't this the script you ordered? The show is starting now. Sigh, I used to be just a screenwriter, but now I have to double as a director. Look at my hard life; don't worry, I won't use any underhanded tactics on you... Oh wait, I got sidetracked. What was I saying? Right, the script! You're the male lead; I've found you a familiar company to work at. Jin Zhenzhong has an advertising agency, and you can start working there as Design Director. That's considered an executive position, right? I've negotiated your salary too—monthly pay of 16,800. That's quite a lucky number. This Fatty will be your assistant. Tsk tsk, I'm really looking forward to your performance." Isolated from the World said all this in one breath without pausing.
The more I listened, the angrier I became, and I couldn't help but curse, "I don't have time for this right now!"
"Oh? Don't you want to know where Yang Guo'er is?" Isolated from the World suddenly said this, causing my mind to buzz.
"You know where Yang Guo'er is?" I asked eagerly.
"Of course!" Isolated from the World replied with a laugh. "I personally designed the script for her kidnapping; how could I not know?"
Hearing this from Isolated from the World, I suddenly felt parched. "What kind of script is this?"
"That's confidential information for clients; how could I possibly tell you?" Isolated from the World replied leisurely. "However, since her script overlaps with yours in some ways, I don't mind giving you a little spoiler. Don't worry; as long as you follow my instructions, she won't be in any danger."
"Are you threatening me?" I couldn't help but shout.
"Ah ha! Yes, I'm threatening you. What's wrong with that?" The more agitated I became, the more excited Isolated from the World seemed: "Shouldn't I add that if you don't follow my instructions, I'll kill Yang Guo'er? The kind of thing where I violate her first and then kill her."
"You dare!" After shouting those two words, I felt that my verbal threat was rather hollow.
"Are you sure I wouldn't dare?" Isolated from the World chuckled.
"Alright, you win. Who should I report to in Star City?" I felt deflated like a punctured ball. "Can you at least let me hear Guo'er's voice first?"
"After 9 AM, at Golden Blade Advertising Co. Ltd. I'm not going to let you listen. If you have the guts, don't report in," Isolated from the World laughed and hung up.
Putting down the phone, I felt a sense of helplessness wash over me. Isolated from the World was like a ghost; I knew nothing about him, yet he seemed to know everything about me. Memories of the conversations I had seen in the internet café, where Isolated from the World threatened Feng Zhen, flooded my mind. All of Feng Zhen's information had been laid bare by him, and I believed my current feelings mirrored those of Feng Zhen perfectly.
"What’s going on?" Fatty asked.
I repeated the conversation I had just had, concluding with, "Anyway, for now, I can only follow his script and take it one step at a time."
Tang Zian pondered for a moment. "My grandfather entrusted me with following up on the Book of Life and Death matter. Zheng Nan, if you help us, we will naturally help you. Although I don’t know what to do right now, just remember to contact me directly if you need anything."
"Alright, thanks in advance!" With that, I signaled Fatty to get up and leave.
Back at the hotel, Fatty looked at me strangely. Confused, I scanned myself for any abnormalities but found none. "What do you mean by looking at me like that?"
"Bro, An Ran is my dream girl. According to the script, you're supposed to end up with her. Just thinking about it breaks my heart; I want to chop you up!" Fatty said with a sorrowful expression.
"Are you kidding me? Do you really think that's possible?" I retorted angrily.
"I initially thought it was impossible for you to be an executive at a company too, but look at you now! You're about to take office; this impossible thing is about to become reality," Fatty said worriedly.
"So what good suggestions do you have?" I was feeling a bit frustrated too.
"Tomorrow I'll go back and cook raw rice into cooked rice with An Ran, then I'll be with her and won't give you a chance with her. As friends, that's all I can do for you," Fatty said with a face full of pity.
Knowing that Fatty was just joking around, I still found myself somewhat approving of his idea. Why not give it a try according to Fatty's plan? But then I shook my head. "No way, Fatty. That guy definitely has other tricks up his sleeve to make you leave!"
Fatty exclaimed, "Are you saying you really want to stick to the script?"
"Don't be ridiculous!" I lit a cigarette and took a deep drag. "Isn't the script supposed to involve getting drunk? I'm just trying not to get drunk. Otherwise, when we get back, An Ran will have to go on a business trip. You arrange it, whether it's Sanya or Tibet, book a hotel room for An Ran to work there. Just don't tell me about it."
Fatty chuckled and didn't say anything further.
The next morning, we rushed back to Star City. Fatty went to the store to find An Ran and arrange the business trip, while I headed straight for Lingfeng.
After hearing the whole story, Lingfeng frowned and said, "Zheng Nan, although this situation is becoming increasingly bizarre, there's one thing we seem to have overlooked."
"What is it?" I perked up at his words.
"Have you noticed? The only way ' Isolated from the World ' has contacted us is through computers. Whether it's by phone or asking someone to choose a script, it's all done through computers; it seems completely dependent on them." Lingfeng analyzed while counting on his fingers. "Nian Nian and Ami discussed plotting against Xinyan through QQ on the computer; several of Feng Zhen's roommates suddenly decided to gang-rape in a game chat channel; I've also seen the interrogation records from Zhen Shuai's side, where that male assistant and Secretary discussed the details of their crime via computer."
"Be more specific; I didn't quite catch that," I replied. "Using QQ for communication is normal; it can almost replace phone functions now."
"All these people deny that they planned the actions themselves; they claim it was someone else's plan, and they were just executing it." Lingfeng furrowed his brow. "I suspect that ' Isolated from the World ' can monitor their chat records and can alter their conversations at will. For example, it could intercept that male assistant's messages and change them to say 'kill Zhen Shuai in the office,' sending it to Secretary, who would then respond with 'Okay, let's kill him in the office with an axe!' This way, everyone thinks it's someone else's plan when in reality, everything is unfolding according to its script."
After Lingfeng finished speaking, I slapped my thigh and exclaimed, "Damn it, that's actually possible."
