Zhong Kui's Diary
"What is he saying?" I closed the iron door behind me and looked at Kong Xuan. "Translator, please."
Kong Xuan rolled his eyes at me. "Do you think I'm a quick translator? I don't know!"
How can he be so brazen when he doesn't even know? Truly shameless!
The three of us approached Niu Yongjun, who let out another round of howls, mixed with a few words that left us puzzled, something about harming you and harming me. It felt strange, like a baby trying hard to express its thoughts.
What does he have to do with me? It would be better to get rid of him quickly. I asked Kong Xuan, "Are you sure this is Frenzied Spirit? Don't kill the wrong person!"
Kong Xuan nodded. "That's right, let's get started!"
He pulled out a delicate Bronze Pagoda from his pocket. I had seen this Pagoda before on the shelf in Kong Xuan's room, among a pile of random items, clearly marked at 998 yuan each; this Pagoda was one of them.
But isn't this thing used to scam offerings?
Kong Xuan glanced at me and Fatty, then shouted at us, "Step back, I'm going to use my ultimate move!"
Fatty and I stepped back two paces with faces full of awe. Did you hear that? An ultimate move; it sounded impressive.
"Step back further!"
We retreated another two steps until our backs were almost against the wall, and only then was Kong Xuan satisfied. He began chanting something while gesturing dramatically for a while, then suddenly turned sideways, swung his arm in a circle, and hurled the Pagoda at Niu Yongjun.
Bang!
Clang!
I originally thought this Pagoda would grow in the wind like the Towering Li Wang's Pagoda, enveloping Niu Yongjun inside and then unleashing True Fire to turn him to ashes. A finishing move should definitely have the appearance of a finishing move. That's how it is in Journey to the West and Investiture of the Gods.
The grand spectacle I was expecting did not materialize; the Bronze Pagoda was about as powerful as a brick, smashing a large gash into Niu Yongjun's forehead, which rolled onto the ground.
Damn, are you planning to kill him with this Pagoda?
I cursed under my breath and walked up with Fatty to see what Kong Xuan was really up to.
After being struck, Niu Yongjun howled even more frantically and loudly.
Kong Xuan picked up the Bronze Pagoda from the ground and smiled at me, saying, "I just wanted to break his skin. Sorry to disappoint you."
Without waiting for my response, he stuffed the Pagoda into his pocket and took out a ruler made of an unknown dark material, which had faint dragon and tiger patterns on it.
"This Primordial Ruler is an ancient treasure..."
Before Kong Xuan could finish, I interrupted him with a single sentence: "Cut the introduction; I'm not here to buy antiques. Hurry up and kill him so we can go back."
Fatty nodded in agreement, saying, "Yeah, hurry up! We might still catch the noon high-speed train. My Ghost Brother and An Ran also want to go play in Moon City and see the sea..."
Suddenly, Kong Xuan let out a strange cry: "Life Pursuit!" He raised the Primordial Ruler and smashed it down toward Niu Yongjun's head.
"Bang! Bang!"
A series of crisp sounds echoed as Kong Xuan swung the Primordial Ruler down onto Niu Yongjun's head, instantly causing his face to swell up high from the impact.
Fatty and I were left dumbfounded.
Nan Kong?
A Taoist master?
An ancient treasure?
Life pursuit?
What was this? It was completely like a street thug swinging a metal rod in a fight; the thug even had more flair than this.
But soon we noticed something unusual. Kong Xuan was not just a Taoist master; he was also a Martial Arts Master. His punches and kicks in Kung Fu were even superior to mine. If I had swung a metal ruler at Niu Yongjun's face, it wouldn't take two hits for his skin to break, but Kong Xuan had already slapped him dozens of times, and aside from the swelling, Niu Yongjun's face showed no signs of breaking skin. Moreover, at the site of the wound created by Kong Xuan's Bronze Pagoda, a Grim Green Thing began to emerge.
This Grim Green Thing twisted at the wound as if it were alive, howling as if the air outside was a deadly poison to it, struggling not to come out. With each slap from Kong Xuan's Primordial Ruler, this green entity was pushed out a little more.
The slapping continued. The Grim Green Thing was nearly pushed out to the size of an egg, wobbling like green jelly at the wound.
"It's drooping! It's about to fall!" Fatty shouted, pointing at the blob of green jelly.
"Yeah," Kong Xuan replied with a smile as he continued to beat Niu Yongjun, pulling out a dirty rag from his pocket and handing it to me. "This is Cosmic Cloth; help me unfold it and lay it on the ground in front of him."
Is this guy Doraemon? How can he have so many tricks up his sleeve? I took that rag and shook it, and a cloud of dust flew out. Damn it, this thing is also called Cosmic Cloth? It's clearly just a Cloth!
Nevertheless, I spread it out on the ground and stepped aside to watch Kong Xuan.
Kong Xuan chanted a few incantations, then swung his arm in a circle, putting all his strength into a strike aimed at Niu Yongjun's face.
Bang! A loud sound echoed as the Primordial Ruler struck Niu Yongjun's face.
With a pop, that green jelly shot out like the cork from a champagne bottle. At that moment, I witnessed the magic of that Cloth... no, that Cosmic Cloth.
As the green jelly flew out, a beam of white light shot from the Cosmic Cloth, transforming in mid-air into a large hand that grabbed the green jelly and yanked it down. The Green Jelly was slammed onto the cloth.
Instantly, the white hand vanished, and countless spikes erupted from the Cosmic Cloth, dozens of them piercing through the Green Jelly. The green jelly shrieked in agony, contorting into various shapes trying to escape from the spikes. The spikes seemed unusually soft; with every twist of the jelly, they followed its movements like maggots clinging to flesh, impossible to shake off.
Kong Xuan stood nearby, occasionally tossing fireballs down. When the fireballs hit the jelly, they would always make a sizzling sound, followed by sharp cries from the green jelly, reminding me of torture devices seen on television—branding irons.
“Dead Thing Ang... crackle crackle... Mo Yi An... crackle crackle... Yi Ou... He Wen!” After another shriek, the Green Jelly fell silent. Upon closer inspection, both the Green Jelly and the spikes had vanished, and the Cosmic Cloth returned to its original state, looking just like a regular Cloth. Lying quietly on this cloth was a Mask, specifically a Zhu Bajie's Mask.
“Is that it?” I asked Kong Xuan skeptically.
“Yeah! Don't you want to see more? Should I replay it?” Kong Xuan casually replied while tidying up his magical tools.
“Uh, I just think this particular Spirit seems weaker.” I rubbed my nose. “Earlier with that Purple Fiend, I saw you use so many big moves to deal with it, but this guy? You just smashed it with a Pagoda, slapped it a few times, and then laid down a rag to finish it off.”
“This rag is called Cosmic Cloth!” Kong Xuan folded up the dirty Cosmic Cloth and put it in his pocket. Standing up, he smacked his lips: “But to be fair, this time’s Frenzied Spirit was indeed much weaker than I expected.”
"Could it be that Invisible Man beat him up before we got here?" Fatty interjected, "Wasn't this guy just shouting that someone was harming him?"
Kong Xuan shook his head, no longer wanting to argue about it. He walked over to the iron bench and woke up Niu Yongjun.
Niu Yongjun looked at us with a dazed expression, then seemed to remember something, his face turning pale: "I have something on me, something is controlling me!"
"We've already taken care of it!" I stepped forward to reassure him.
The look of horror on Niu Yongjun's face gradually faded, replaced by gratitude as he repeatedly said, "Brothers, I don't have much to repay you with. If you want any meat in the future, just come find me at the stall..."
I smiled and agreed, reminding him not to spread this incident around, and called Kong Xuan as the two of us headed toward the door.
Niu Yongjun shouted from behind, "Aren't you guys planning to let me go?"
I laughed and said, "Someone will come unlock it for you later; just give them the meat you owe us!"
After calling out a few times in front of the iron bars, Zhou Zhi'an came over. I mentioned that Niu Yongjun's issue had been resolved and casually asked, "Who brought Niu Yongjun here?"
Zhou Zhi'an replied with a smile, "That guy almost injured a customer while selling meat. Turns out that customer is the uncle of Director Li's goddaughter. Director Li was furious and personally led a team to bring him in. Hehe, he got a good beating for half the morning at the station!"
I couldn't help but chuckle; could it be that this Frenzied Spirit got beaten silly? Not wanting to dwell on it any longer, I exchanged a few words with Zhou Zhi'an, and the three of us left directly.
As soon as we stepped out the door, my phone rang—it was Lingfeng.
"Zhou Zhi'an, have you guys sorted it out? How are you all doing?" Lingfeng sounded quite happy.
"Got it!" I replied confidently. "It's a Zhu Bajie Mask, and Kong Xuan is coming over to report and claim the reward!"
"Zhu Bajie? Well, now we have four Masks: Pleasant Goat, Snoopy, Bear, and Zhu Bajie. What do these Masks represent?" Lingfeng murmured.
"What Bear?" I quickly asked.
"Xiao Qingcheng just extracted the Spirit from Director Li. His Spirit is Dual-Faced Phantom, and the Mask he left behind is a Bear Mask. I thought Dual-Faced Phantom would have two Masks, but it turns out there's only one," Lingfeng laughed. "As for the remaining two Spirits, one might be with Gong Ping'an, and I've already sent Xiao Qingcheng to check them one by one. I've found everyone who was present at the scene."
Lingfeng seemed to be in a good mood. Although there were still some doubts regarding the Mask case, there was now a clear line of reasoning, unlike at the beginning when everything was so confusing.
After placing all the Masks with Lingfeng, our group of six boarded the high-speed train to Moon City. We had three more beautiful women with us: Yang Guo'er, Aijia Yu, and An Ran. Guo'er was encouraged by An Ran to experience the sea at the beach.
Upon arriving in Moon City, Gu Shuchang picked us up in a business vehicle, claiming that the rooms were already arranged. From now on, she would personally handle Guo'er and the others' itinerary while the three of us could focus on our own tasks.
After we dropped off our luggage in the hotel room, she took us to a private room in Seafood City. The room was quite large; besides a main dining table, there was also a Mahjong table and a coffee table, along with a restroom. Once Gu Shuchang had us seated, she immediately ordered a large amount of seafood—since we didn't eat well last time, this time we would have double portions.
While sipping tea and listening to Gu Shuchang share intriguing stories from the political scene in Moon City, her phone rang just as she was recounting an incident where a director wrote a guarantee letter for his mistress. After answering and responding with a few sounds, she leaned closer to me and whispered, "Yang Zhou has also arrived in Moon City!"
