Zhong Kui's Diary
I asked in astonishment, "Director Li, what do you mean by that?"
"What do I mean? Don't you all want to kill me? Come on, I'm already prepared to be killed by you! Whatever pose you want me to strike, I'll do my best to cooperate!" Li Dexin looked at us with a half-smile, his expression mocking, like a big cat watching two mice.
Hearing Li Dexin say this, I felt a chill run down my spine. Damn it, this guy must already know we are here to kill him. Looking at his calm demeanor, he seemed completely unafraid of Xiao Qingcheng.
What is going on? What scheme is Li Dexin up to? Doubts flooded my mind.
"That's right, I am one of the Dual-Faced Phantoms," Li Dexin said with a smirk, revealing a hint of mockery. "Since we've come this far, feel free to ask me anything you want to know. I'll do my best to satisfy you. After all, it's you who helped me deal with the other Spirits; I still have to give you some face, hahahaha!"
At this point, Li Dexin burst into wild laughter.
What does he mean by that? Xiao Qingcheng and I exchanged glances, both seeing deep confusion in each other's eyes.
"You mean you really dislike the other Spirits?" I hesitated for a long time before asking uncertainly.
"Motherfucker, I've wanted to rebel for a long time!" It was rare for Li Dexin to use such grandiose language; the gossip hidden within him instantly piqued my interest. This is someone with a story.
"Well then!" Since it had come to this, I didn't care anymore. I took out a cigarette, lit it, and squatted down while smiling at Li Dexin. After all, it would end in a showdown; listening to some gossip before the battle wouldn't hurt.
Li Dexin approached me with a friendly smile, asked for a cigarette, lit it with my lighter, took a deep puff, squatted beside me, and blew out a large smoke ring. His smile turned into a bitter grin. "Motherfucker, those days were truly unbearable."
Xiao Qingcheng looked at us both in confusion, standing aside unsure of what to do.
"You should listen too; after all, we're about to have our showdown. It's either me dead or both of you dead," Li Dexin casually invited Xiao Qingcheng. "Qingcheng, you've also helped me eliminate the Shadow Phantom and Blazing Sun Phantom; we might as well share some insights before we die!"
Xiao Qingcheng glanced at me and stepped a little closer.
"Are you looking down on me for standing so far away?" Li Dexin frowned.
Xiao Qingcheng was at a loss whether to laugh or cry, and could only stand beside me.
"What’s going on with your Blazing Sun Phantom?" I flicked the ash from my cigarette and asked.
"Our Dual-Faced Phantom consists of two parts, right? One is the blazing sun and the other is the bright moon; I am the Bright Moon Phantom." A look of exaggerated disgust appeared on Li Dexin's face. "For countless years, I've lived with the Blazing Sun Phantom. I see it when I wake up in the morning and when I go to sleep at night. We do everything hand in hand... Damn! Don't think our relationship is good; I've long found it unbearable. Unfortunately, as Spirits, we cannot separate. Moreover, even if I were to get rid of the Blazing Sun Phantom, other Spirits wouldn't let me off easily. This life feels like an eternity."
I was astonished; I never expected such a reason. Thinking about it from their perspective made sense—if even Teacher Takizawa Laura were to hug me all the time, I would find it annoying too. Countless years? Tsk tsk, how deep must that resentment be?
"Fortunately, I found an opportunity—a chance to break free!" Li Dexin patted my shoulder and smiled. "I sincerely thank you humans!"
"How so?"
"In the past hundred years, humans have exploited our world to an outrageous extent. We watch as our Spirits disappear one by one, and each Spirit begins to worry for its own survival. We have emotions too; we fear death." Li Dexin chuckled and said, "So I took advantage of everyone's precarious mindset and encouraged them to possess humans and become ghosts. At least as ghosts, there is an Underworld where they can reside, free from the destruction of the Yang Realm."
"So you all started looking for Masks to possess?" I asked.
"Heh heh, did you not listen carefully to what I just said? This is an opportunity! Because only after possessing a human body can I temporarily separate from the Blazing Sun Phantom. For this plan, I've gone through great lengths." Li Dexin took a puff of smoke, a proud expression on his face. "Two years ago, the Blazing Sun Phantom and I began possessing this body..."
"What? Two years ago?" I couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
"Yes, two years ago, the Blazing Sun Phantom and I accidentally discovered that this Li Dexin's body was very suitable for us because he is a typical Dual-Faced person—one way on the surface and another behind the scenes. After we possessed him, we felt completely comfortable. Every time he wanted me to undergo final fusion, I always made excuses that I wasn't ready. There's no way I'd let it fuse so quickly; it's a joke! If it fuses, how can I carry out my plan?" A smile was on Li Dexin's face, but his eyes were chillingly cold.
"What’s your plan?" I asked hesitantly.
"To eliminate the other Spirits, I've concocted a reason: humans live hypocritically, always wearing different Masks to get through life. Therefore, we need to transform into Masks to better integrate. And indeed, it's not entirely fabricated; isn't that right?" Li Dexin asked me with a smile.
I glanced at Xiao Qingcheng, and the two of us fell silent. Just recently, we had debated this issue.
"I have been experimenting with them for two years and have completely mastered the essentials. The integration is absolutely feasible. Then I customized the Six Masks for them."
"Six? Wait, wait, isn't that seven including you two?" I pointed out Li Dexin's words.
"Because I added a unique formula inside. This formula won't make them feel any difference, but it will affect the final step of the integration. Am I supposed to make one for myself too? Do I look like an idiot to you? Of course, I have an excuse to explain it to them." Li Dexin smiled and winked at me. "So far, how do you think my plan is going?"
"I feel like you're trying to fool me. You and Blazing Sun Phantom are one entity; how could you do something without him knowing?" I pointed out the inconsistency disdainfully.
"Sorry, I just forgot to clarify this point. After possessing someone, we can temporarily separate before the integration turns into a ghost." Li Dexin showed a bitter smile and sighed, "Damn it, it's only at this moment that I feel like an independent individual. It's nice not to have someone glued to you all the time! Because of this, my determination to implement the plan has only strengthened."
"Why didn't you send the Six Masks directly to the store? Why go through Moon City first? Why did Liu Xingyu commit suicide?" I brought up a question that had been on my mind for a long time.
"It's simple; I don't want my employees to know who I am." Li Dexin looked at me as if I were foolish, seemingly finding my question childish. "As for Liu Xingyu's accident, that was intentional on my part. A car flipping over on the roadside would definitely attract a lot of attention, and the scene would be chaotic. Most importantly, Zheng Nan, you were there at the time."
"What does my being there have to do with anything?" I was even more confused. "Do you think I could play any role in your plan?"
"Of course! Because you have good relationships with both Xiao Qingcheng and Kong Xuan. I want to use you to eliminate other Spirits; that's my goal." Li Dexin laughed proudly. "As for Liu Xingyu, I forcibly controlled his thoughts, which led him to have an accident at that specific time and place. After being possessed, he would retain some memories; to prevent him from coming back, I simply controlled him to commit suicide—problem solved."
Suddenly, a thought struck me: "Aren't you afraid we might let them off? Or that we might end up being eliminated by your Spirit brothers?"
Li Dexin laughed and said, "First of all, during the possession period, our abilities are at their lowest; that's why I didn't let them integrate. Besides, haven't I always been helping you?"
Helping us? When have you ever helped us? Was it when you captured Niu Yongjun and took him to Xingcheng Kangning Hospital?
"Invisible Man! You are that Invisible Man!" Xiao Qingcheng suddenly shouted loudly.
"Just figured it out? I'm really worried about your intelligence!" Li Dexin flicked the cigarette butt in his hand and stood up tall. "Fortunately, I can become invisible; otherwise, how would I know that you’ve already started to suspect me? Seeing you all in Lingfeng's office for so long made me curious, so I listened in for a bit. Tsk tsk, I got lucky. Alright, I've told you what you needed to know; let's start the final showdown!"
"Wait, wait, you were the one who helped Qingcheng take down the Shadow, and you pushed Purple Fiend into that Pentagram? And in the Abandoned Building in Moon City, you also gave Gong Ping'an a push?" I shouted loudly.
"Yes, I usually do good deeds without leaving my name. However, I didn't help much with Devouring Soul; its strength is the strongest among us. At that time, I didn't even know how to approach it. I never expected you to take it down so easily; it really surprised me." Li Dexin looked at me with a smile, full of admiration. "Once Devouring Soul was dead, I left. Although I don't know how you killed it, what does it matter? For me, none of this is important anymore; what matters is that you killed it!"
I tossed away the cigarette butt and walked away a bit, saying to Xiao Qingcheng, "You guys go ahead with the showdown; I can't help much anyway!"
Xiao Qingcheng raised her hand, and the Peach Wood Sword appeared in her grasp with a swish, growing longer in the wind.
"Oh right, I forgot to tell you that I've fully fused with these two. Shouldn't you be happy for me about this good news? You might not know much about my abilities, so let me introduce myself: first of all, I can become invisible!" Amidst his laughter, Li Dexin's body flickered twice and vanished into thin air.
"Just a trivial skill, nothing to worry about!" With a sneer, Xiao Qingcheng chanted a couple of incantations. Her Index Finger and Middle Finger quickly swept over her eyes as she commanded, "Open your eyes!"
Then she softly exclaimed 'eh', seemingly unable to detect Li Dexin's presence.
"Hahaha! I'm a ghost evolved from Spirit; my energy is different from traditional Demons. You won't be able to see me with your eyes," came Li Dexin's proud voice from the air.
