Zhong Kui's Diary
I grabbed Xiao Qingcheng's shoulder and said sternly, "Qingcheng, what are you doing?"
If it were anyone else saying this in front of me, I would have definitely punched them or slapped them. Guo'er is already like this, and you're still making sarcastic remarks?
But who is Xiao Qingcheng? She's from the Daoist Family; there might really be a chance to save Guo'er.
Xiao Qingcheng frowned in pain and exclaimed, "You're hurting me."
I quickly released my grip, keeping my eyes fixed on Xiao Qingcheng. "What do you mean by that?"
Xiao Qingcheng rubbed her shoulder but glanced at Fatty. "Fatty, please make a call and ask Kong Xuan to come over; he needs to be involved in this matter!"
Fatty looked at Xiao Qingcheng in surprise and took out his phone to make the call. I muttered, "Go outside to call, and while you're at it, bring me a pack of cigarettes!"
I understood Bai Xiao Qingcheng's intention; she definitely wanted to send Fatty away.
After Fatty left, Xiao Qingcheng whispered, "Zheng Nan, I can freeze Guo'er's body to prevent it from deteriorating..."
"And then what?"
Xiao Qingcheng smiled helplessly and softly said four words: "Book of Life and Death!"
In that instant, I understood what Xiao Qingcheng meant. She could preserve Guo'er's body, and all I had to do was find the Book of Life and Death and then alter Yang Guo'er's lifespan on it.
"Is that possible?" My throat felt dry as I licked my lips and struggled to swallow.
"Theoretically, it is absolutely possible." Xiao Qingcheng's face showed a conflicted expression again. "But, the higher-ups..."
I understood her meaning; since the Treasure Office was already established, the former leader of the Dragon Group, Lou Wei, was still in charge. This showed how much importance the higher-ups placed on this matter. Although I was currently free to act as I wished, it was only because Lou Wei knew that Lingfeng, Xiao Qingcheng, and Yang Guo'er were all my friends. He chose to be generous and let me do as I pleased.
Lou Wei had indeed calculated my involvement; no matter what, I could not just watch Lingfeng's family get implicated. Moreover, Guo'er's family was also involved.
However, Xiao Qingcheng's words were akin to betting on her family's future. If the higher-ups found out that I used the Book of Life and Death on Guo'er because of Xiao Qingcheng's reminder, the Xiao Family would definitely be doomed. No wonder she wanted to send Fatty away; for her, such matters could not be known by anyone else but me—not even Fatty.
I looked at Xiao Qingcheng with gratitude, not understanding why Bai Xiao Qingcheng was helping me so much. Perhaps it was due to our shared enmity not long ago. I discussed some details with her; ultimately, we still needed Kong Xuan and others to join us. One reason was that Kong Xuan was my friend—someone who had been through life and death with me and was absolutely trustworthy. The other reason was that this matter required Kong Xuan's involvement; in terms of concealment, the Southern Kong Family had an advantage.
Xiao Qingcheng repeatedly instructed me not to use the Book of Life and Death to save Guo'er. Only she knew of a potion that could bring someone back to life, which needed time to brew. I could only promise her this; I trusted my brother, but Xiao Qingcheng did not share that belief, as it concerned her family's safety.
When Kong Xuan arrived, Xiao Qingcheng discussed some technical aspects with him. My task was to recover my health because there were more important things awaiting me—specifically, using the Book of Life and Death's sensing ability to locate the whereabouts of the remaining four pages of the treasure book. From initially having a mindset of 'if I obtain it, it's my fortune; if not, it's my fate' to now wholeheartedly seeking it out represented a complete shift in perspective—such is the way of fate.
There was also another matter: why had An Ran become like this? There must be reasons we did not know about, and An Ran seemed to be coming after me. Given her demeanor, she would definitely not give up easily; I needed to recover from my injuries in preparation for An Ran's attack.
In the following days, they split into two groups to take turns watching over me: Xiao Qingcheng and Aijia Yu formed one group while Fatty and Kong Xuan made up the other. Lingfeng found an excuse for my parents not to come visit me anymore and slipped a gun under my pillow.
"When there's real danger to your life, just shoot!" When Lingfeng said this, I clearly saw Fatty's face twitching.
Until I fully recovered, An Ran did not come looking for me. Perhaps she didn't dare provoke us since we had many people here. Everyone's vigilance had diminished significantly; however, regardless of what happened, there would definitely be a Taoist practitioner by my side—either Kong Xuan or Xiao Qingcheng.
After being discharged from the hospital, the first thing I did was ask Kong Xuan how Guo'er's body had been handled. Kong Xuan merely said it was already taken care of but refused to let me see it. Finally, I pulled out the gun Lingfeng had given me and pointed it at his head; he turned pale and cursed as he took me back to Qifeng Temple.
Entering his room, everything looked just as it had when I first met Kong Xuan: a square table with benches and a bed with bookshelves.
I looked at Kong Xuan with suspicion. This room was empty; where could Guo'er be hidden?
Kong Xuan walked to the bookshelf, reached up, and took down a bronze paperweight. He casually tossed it onto the table and muttered a few incantations. Suddenly, a white jade square box appeared where he had placed the paperweight. Kong Xuan picked up the white jade box and held it in front of me.
"What is this?" I asked, puzzled.
"Guo'er, of course," Kong Xuan rolled his eyes. "Who else could it be?"
I gestured with my gun again, and Kong Xuan laughed, "Motherfucker, are you going to shoot yourself in the foot?"
"Shooting oneself in the foot" has another layer of meaning in the dialect of Star City; scientifically speaking, it refers to achieving sexual climax through finger stimulation, specifically for women. For men, it's generally referred to as "flying a plane."
"Stop joking around and hurry up!" I laughed as I put the gun away; we both knew that the safety was still on.
Kong Xuan waved his hand, and a golden Bagua Talisman appeared in his palm. The talisman flickered three times above the white jade box, and with a click, the box popped open. A purple light emanated from within, and at that moment, I witnessed something truly incredible.
I saw Guo'er lying quietly inside the box as if she were asleep. The box was only palm-sized; logically speaking, Guo'er should have been shrunk down to fit inside, yet she looked just as large as before. The situation was utterly mysterious; size had completely transcended my understanding. I couldn't find the right words to describe it; it was like having a cigarette case in front of me while I lay inside it—the cigarette case hadn't grown larger, nor had I shrunk.
I reached out to touch Guo'er's face; aside from being a bit cold, she felt just like usual. I looked at Kong Xuan in astonishment and stammered, "What... what is going on?"
Kong Xuan smiled proudly, "To contain Mount Sumeru within a mustard seed and manifest three thousand worlds from that mustard seed! This Mustard Seed Box is that amazing!"
With that, he closed the box, and the purple light along with Guo'er vanished from sight. He casually placed the Mustard Seed Box back on the bookshelf and recited a few more incantations; the Mustard Seed Box disappeared into thin air.
Seeing this unfold, I felt relieved and casually asked, "Last time you had some kind of Spatial Bag; isn't it based on a similar principle?"
"The principle is similar, but the effectiveness is a difference of ten thousand times. The Spatial Bag is like a storage locker, while the Mustard Seed Box is like a large warehouse, an extra-large one!" Kong Xuan smacked his lips, picked up a bronze paperweight from the table, tossed it in his hand, placed it back down, and smiled, "This is just a defective product. If there really were a Mustard Seed from Buddhism, heh heh, you could fit the Three Thousand Great Worlds inside. Now that's impressive."
"Aren't you Taoist? How come you're also mentioning Buddhism?" I asked curiously.
"The Great Dao has no door; the void is an absolute path. All methods return to one, and different paths lead to the same destination. To put it simply, listening to the sound while sitting on a lotus and an old man pushing a cart can both lead you to the Pinnacle of Happiness..." Kong Xuan smiled as he gave examples.
"Ugh, you've been learning bad habits from Fatty lately!" I laughed and scolded.
Kong Xuan scratched his head in surprise and after a moment said, "I guess so. That motherfucker, that beast!"
"Since the Mustard Seed Box is better than the Spatial Bag, why don't you carry the Mustard Seed Box with you?" I scratched my head and asked.
"Do you think I don't want to? But this Mustard Seed Box weighs over seven hundred pounds! I can't even lift it without chanting a spell!" Kong Xuan laughed as he patted the bookshelf, producing a dull metallic sound. "Don't underestimate this shelf; it's sturdy!"
"Enough about that. Do you have any spare Spatial Bags? Give me one! Lingfeng gave me this gun, and I have nowhere to put it." I lifted my shirt and pointed at the gun tucked into my jeans. "If it goes off accidentally, it's no joke."
Kong Xuan chuckled as he rummaged through his pocket for a moment and pulled out a coin, handing it to me.
What does this mean? Why is he giving me a coin? It's just a dime.
"Here you go; this is the Spatial Bag!" Kong Xuan raised an eyebrow, looking serious.
I took the coin. "Are you sure this is a Spatial Bag?"
Kong Xuan couldn't be bothered to argue with me and directly taught me how to use it. I tried it out and was surprised; there was indeed space inside the coin roughly the size of a suitcase. It was quite magical. Without hesitation, I tossed in the Book of Life and Death along with my handgun and other items.
"Don't throw the lighter in there; my lighter exploded inside once," Kong Xuan joked.
"Not bad, not bad, just a bit small!" I tossed a coin and put it in my pocket.
"If you have the ability, don't take it!" Kong Xuan rolled her eyes and said disdainfully.
Just as I was about to ask Kong Xuan if she had a bigger one, she suddenly furrowed her brows, her face showing a serious expression as she whispered, "Heart!"
Before the words left her mouth, the door to the compartment was kicked open with a loud bang. An Ran stood at the doorway, looking proud, her chin slightly raised as she cast a disdainful glance at the two of us.
Seeing An Ran made me feel an inexplicable anger rise within me. I shouted, "An Ran, what on earth is going on?"
An Ran scoffed, "Are you still treating me as An Ran?"
"Then who are you?" I asked in surprise.
"I am the Moon Demon Heir!" An Ran declared proudly.
