Zhong Kui's Diary
“Qingcheng! Qingcheng, are you there?” I shouted at the top of my lungs.
If I wasn't mistaken, both Xiao Qingcheng and Youdi had entered this passage, so it was always good to call out a few times.
The passage only echoed my voice, with no response.
As before, I left a message for Xiao Qingcheng on the wall and marked the ground with a few mineral water bottles. I picked up my gun and flashlight and walked towards the passage.
After walking for about ten minutes, a large hall suddenly appeared before me. The hall was square, approximately thirty meters in length and width, quite spacious. In the center stood a pillar about one meter in diameter, shining bright yellow as if cast from gold, with various patterns carved into it. As I approached and focused my gaze, I realized the pillar was not made of gold but rather brass.
As for the carvings, at the top was a dragon, and below were various strange animals. Remembering how Youdi had introduced their ancestral divine beasts earlier, Xiao Qingcheng had explained to me about the Dragon's Nine Offspring. It seemed these monsters were indeed the nine sons of the dragon.
The dragon looked so magnificent; how could its offspring be so ugly? Could it be that they took after the neighbor Wang... Wang Ba?
I glanced at the patterns on the pillar and found them uninteresting. Holding my flashlight, I scanned around; there wasn't much in the hall—just a few tables resembling coffee tables. I vaguely remembered that such tables were called anqi in ancient times. Aside from that, the room was empty with nothing else inside.
Opposite the hall was another passage. After waving my flashlight around to ensure I hadn't missed any important details, I stepped into that passage.
Continuing for another ten minutes, I encountered another hall identical to the previous one. The difference was that on one of the tables lay a figure.
“Who?” I immediately raised my gun and shouted.
To be honest, I wasn't particularly scared; instead, there was a desire within me to see a living person. The figure remained silent, so I shouted again but received no response.
“If you don't respond, I'll shoot!” I said as I slowly approached. When I got closer, I realized it wasn't really a person but just a skeleton draped in clothing.
The clothing was somewhat moldy and decayed, but its style was still recognizable as that of a jacket popular ten years ago with a zipper. Upon seeing this figure, images of Brother Five's Four Great Kings flashed through my mind. This person was likely one of Brother Five's two brothers; I wondered if it was Cao Shangfei Xu Wuji or Open Tomb Hand Lan He. Since Brother Five had mentioned Xu Wuji being taken down by monsters at the entrance, this person must undoubtedly be Lan He.
I poked Remains with my gun, and with a crash, Remains collapsed to the ground. Upon closer inspection, I noticed bite marks on Remains' bones, sending a chill down my spine. I dared not linger any longer and hurried towards another passage in the hall.
After passing through three halls, I found myself back at the Copper Door of the Right Angle passage. It seemed that this was yet another circular passage, just with three additional halls.
Damn it, where is the exit?
I swept my flashlight across the wall; aside from my own markings, there were no new inscriptions, meaning Xiao Qingcheng and the others were not in this passage.
The beam of the flashlight fell on a water bottle at my feet. This sight made my scalp tingle and my muscles tense. The arrow I had set up was now scattered all over the place, as if a group of animals had rushed through here.
Were there other things in this passage? The image of Lan He's Remains flashed through my mind. Right, there were bite marks on his Remains, which meant there must be dangerous creatures lurking in this passage.
At that moment, I heard a chaotic noise coming from behind me, like a large group of unknown animals rushing towards me. The sounds grew louder and closer, echoing throughout the passage until it was filled with a rustling sound.
What was even more frightening was that among these crawling sounds were sharp squeaks.
I turned to shine my flashlight deeper into the passage. At that moment, I didn't need a mirror to know that my face looked pale. In this enclosed passage, facing an unknown horde of creatures without trembling was already commendable.
Finally, in the beam of my flashlight appeared an enormous rat. Yes, I did not misspeak—a rat. It was so large that calling it a rat was an understatement; it could easily be described using terms for pigs or cows. This… rat was about the size of a pig.
Is there anything more terrifying than seeing a giant rat? Yes, seeing a swarm of giant rats. Two, three, four… in an instant, at least twenty or thirty enormous rats came charging towards me frantically.
"Bang!" I instinctively fired at the foremost rat.
With a sharp squeal, the leading giant rat was knocked backward by my shot, colliding with several others behind it and causing them to roll on the ground. However, the rest of the giant rats were unfazed by the loud gunshot; amidst their squeaking, their rush became even more frantic.
Clack! I pulled on the Cylinder handle.
Bang!
Another shot rang out, and another giant rat was sent flying by my bullet.
The giant rats charged even faster, and I could see the ferocious eyes of the one in front, along with its sharp teeth bared in a snarl.
Damn, do they want me dead?
Without hesitation, I turned and ran. After a couple of steps, I fired another shot behind me. With each gunshot, a giant rat was hit. I knew the capacity of the shotgun's magazine; there were only eight rounds left. Once those were gone, unless I found a chance to reload, these giant rats would tear me apart.
Soon enough, all eight bullets were spent, and there were still about twenty giant rats behind me. I shoved the gun into my Spatial Bag and sprinted away. I swore that at that moment, my speed could rival Liu Xiang.
Unfortunately, these giant rats were even faster, their shrill cries echoing right behind me.
“Eek!”
I felt something land on my shoulder; it seemed a giant rat had leaped onto me. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my shoulder—damn it, this beast had bitten me!
Gritting my teeth, I reached back and grabbed the rat, pulling it off with force and slamming it against the wall. It let out a high-pitched scream as it fell to the ground. I couldn't tell if it was dead or just stunned, but my shoulder throbbed painfully; that creature had bitten off a large chunk of flesh.
“Eek! Eek!” Two more shrill cries rushed toward me. This time I learned my lesson; upon hearing the rats' cries, I immediately ducked down. Two rats dashed over my head. At that moment, I couldn't afford to be polite—I swung my flashlight and smashed one down while grabbing the other with my hand and slamming it against the wall.
The rat that hit the wall was knocked out cold, but the one I struck with the flashlight rolled on the ground and sprang back up, opening its gaping mouth to bite at my thigh.
Damn it! Can’t we just run happily together? At that moment, I didn’t have time to complain. I leaped up, twisting in mid-air, using my toes to push off the wall for extra momentum. With a loud crack, I kicked the giant rat mid-air, bursting its insides.
However, that leap and kick slowed me down slightly. Amidst the squeaks, a sharp pain shot through my right calf; one of the giant rats had already bitten down on my leg.
Letting out a shout, I stumbled almost falling to the ground but managed to regain my balance. Turning around quickly, I drew out my dagger. With an injury to my leg, running was no longer an option; now it was time to fight for my life.
In that instant, I really missed my iron pickaxe; that thing had much more killing power than a dagger.
Unfortunately, knowing that Brother Five is a Tomb Raider Expert, I did not bring this iron pickaxe.
A fleeting thought of nostalgia passed through my mind as I wielded my dagger, blocking the onslaught of about twenty giant rats charging at me. I was indeed skilled, but I couldn't predict the erratic attacks of the giant rats. Moreover, their ferocity was far beyond that of humans; each one leaped into the air, opening its gaping maw to bite me without regard for its own safety.
With every slash of my dagger, a giant rat fell, yet with each wave of attacks, several others managed to bite me.
Damn it, I couldn't hold on any longer.
I was drenched in blood, my body almost numb from exhaustion. With a flashlight in my left hand and a dagger in my right, I gasped for breath as I fought desperately.
There were still seven or eight giant rats surrounding me, and I had at least twenty or thirty wounds on my body. Fortunately, there were only two large wounds: one on my shoulder and another on my thigh. Both had chunks of flesh torn away by the giant rats, and blood flowed continuously.
Another giant rat lunged at my head, exposing its sharp teeth as it aimed for my nose. I swung my dagger with all my might; a gust of wind swept past as the dagger sliced the rat in half, its blood splattering across my face and instantly blinding me.
I was going to die; just when things got worse, I quickly reached out to wipe the blood from my eyes. In that moment of distraction, two more rats successfully ambushed me from the left thigh and abdomen, causing intense pain. I hastily wiped my eyes and squinted as I bent down to swing twice more with my dagger, killing those two giant rats.
My vision began to double; it wasn't just the blood obscuring my sight but also due to excessive blood loss. There were only four rats left. Gritting my teeth and summoning what little strength remained, I managed to kill three of them in quick succession. As I swung at the last one, dizziness hit me hard; I lost my balance and stumbled. The last giant rat seized the opportunity to pounce on me, and a sharp pain shot through my left arm. My grip loosened, and the flashlight fell to the ground, seemingly hitting the switch as its light went out instantly, plunging the entire passage into darkness.
