Zhong Kui's Diary
Backup?
I exchanged a glance with Kang Qin, and we both saw deep suspicion in each other's eyes.
"What backup?" Kang Qin asked casually, turning his head.
"Well, I happened to be on duty when the girl, Chen Fei'er, suddenly died. There were three people in the elevator, but they never reached out to help; they just watched as Chen Fei'er died. I was extremely angry at that moment and recorded the video on my phone, planning to upload it online. I was just writing a post, and I had already thought of a title: 'Three Beasts Watch Without Helping, No Matter If They Have Sons or Daughters.' What do you think? Isn't that a catchy title?" The security guard said proudly. "I’m not afraid to tell you that I was the top scorer in the liberal arts section of our village's 2005 high school entrance exam..."
"Where's your phone? Show us the video," Kang Qin interrupted the security guard.
The security guard took out his phone, which had a large Apple logo on it, but it had two leaves... I admired the designer of this knockoff; it was impressive.
His fingers flew across the screen, and soon he found the video and pressed play.
As soon as the video started, the elevator was empty. Then a girl came up from the sixth floor; it must be Chen Fei'er. She seemed very interested in the elevator but didn't know how to operate it, looking around confusedly before staring blankly at the elevator buttons.
After going down to the first floor, the elevator began to rise again and only opened on the seventeenth floor when three people entered.
Seeing these three people, we all gasped quietly; they were Du Weidong, Qin Zhicheng, and Cheng Yongqi.
After Cheng Yongqi pressed the button for the first floor, he seemed to casually ask Chen Fei'er something. Then he pressed the button for the sixth floor. What happened next was just as the security guard described: Chen Fei'er suddenly collapsed in the elevator, her face contorted in pain. She clutched her throat with her left hand and reached out towards Cheng Yongqi with her right hand. Cheng Yongqi seemed to shout and pushed her hand away, retreating to a corner of the elevator. Seeing this, Chen Fei'er reached out towards Qin Zhicheng. He hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do, when Du Weidong pulled him away directly to another corner.
The three of them just watched as Chen Fei'er struggled on the ground without offering any help until the elevator doors opened on the sixth floor. The three quickly exited the elevator while Chen Fei'er struggled for a while before finally stopping.
Before long, a young man rushed over from outside the elevator, picked up Chen Fei'er, pressed the button for the first floor, and ran out quickly.
The video ended there, leaving the entire machine room in a heavy silence. Then Fatty angrily exclaimed, "These are three beasts!"
I have no words because I feel that the term "Fatty" is too fitting. How could one be so indifferent to life?
I feel a bit blocked inside. In the past, whenever someone needed help, people around would never hesitate to lend a hand. Now, when someone needs help, people around are quick to roll their eyes. Moreover, this mindset is gradually being accepted by the masses. Nowadays, if you see an elderly person fall on the street, who would dare to go help?
"Who is the person that just came in?" Kang Qin asked the security guard with a serious expression.
"That person is an employee from the insurance company on the sixth floor. I heard his mother also works there as a cleaner," the security guard frowned and replied.
"The son of Zhou Xiaoping?" Kang Qin exchanged a glance with me, and we both nodded. Since Chen Fei'er was being cared for at Zhou Xiaoping's home, her son naturally knew Chen Fei'er, which is why he unhesitatingly carried her to the hospital.
I looked at Kong Xuan and asked, "Did you find anything?"
Kong Xuan shook his head. "If all of this was done by Chen Fei'er, then it makes sense that she harbors resentment towards these people. It was precisely because she encountered trouble in the elevator while trying to help that Du Weidong and others chose to ignore her plight. Therefore, she decided to take revenge by killing these three in the elevator!"
"No wonder they all died in that elevator, and in such a tragic manner; it's all retribution!" Fatty shook his head in disbelief.
"What? They died?" The security guard looked at Fatty in shock.
"What? You didn't know?" Fatty looked equally astonished at the security guard.
It's no surprise that Fatty was shocked; a murder occurred in the building, and this security guard on duty was completely unaware—it's simply unacceptable!
"I've been on leave for two days writing posts at home. I just came back to work today and only heard about someone dying but didn't know who it was," the security guard said in confusion. "Officer Kang just asked me to check the surveillance footage, and I was still confused!"
"Oh, I see. Let me tell you: yesterday Du Weidong was cut in half by the elevator, and today Qin Zhicheng also died inside it. Only this Cheng Yongqi..." Fatty paused suddenly and looked at me.
I was surprised by his sudden stop when a flash of realization hit me, and I cursed under my breath: "Damn!"
I rushed out the door, shouting loudly, "Cheng Yongqi!"
In the distance, I saw a figure moving near the elevator door; that strong and imposing body was unmistakably Cheng Yongqi.
I shouted sternly, "Cheng Yongqi, get away from the elevator!"
"What?" Cheng Yongqi seemed to not understand my meaning and responded loudly.
"Get away from the elevator!" I sprinted forward, my voice becoming distorted and unusually sharp.
Cheng Yongqi paused for a moment, then cautiously took a step back.
Damn it, does taking a bigger step hurt?
I didn't bother shouting again since I was already less than ten meters away from her.
At that moment, the elevator door behind Cheng Yongqi opened with a ding, revealing a swirling mass of black mist inside, accompanied by an eerie laughter that drifted out.
Chen Fei'er!
It was Chen Fei'er coming to seek revenge on Cheng Yongqi. I couldn't care less about gun control; I pulled out my pistol and fired a shot into the black mist inside the elevator.
With a bang, the bullet pierced through the mist and struck the cabin, producing a crisp sound.
Cheng Yongqi was already stunned when she saw me draw my gun. Upon hearing the gunshot, she let out a piercing scream. For a moment, the sound of gunfire and her screams echoed in the underground parking lot, setting off an automatic alarm on one of the cars.
"Get back!" I shouted as I ran.
At this moment, I was less than five meters away from Cheng Yongqi.
Cheng Yongqi seemed completely oblivious to me, squatting down and covering her ears while screaming, as the black mist inside the elevator floated up to her head.
Without hesitation, I fired my gun at the black mist repeatedly until I ran out of bullets.
The bullets passed through the floating black mist, hitting a vehicle parked in the distance, triggering another car alarm and making the parking lot even noisier.
Just as I was one meter away from Cheng Yongqi, a shadow grinned ominously, suddenly sinking down and enveloping her. Amid her piercing screams, it was as if an invisible rope had yanked her forcefully, and with a whoosh, she flew into the elevator, crashing against the cabin wall with a loud bang.
The elevator doors slowly and firmly began to close, and I could hear Cheng Yongqi's shrill cries from inside: "Help! Help me!"
I continued to sprint forward. Just as the elevator doors were about to close, I thrust my handgun between them.
This type of elevator door had an automatic sensor; as long as it detected an object in the middle of the doors, they would automatically reopen. However, strangely enough, even though my handgun was stuck in the gap, the doors did not open. Instead, they squeezed the gun, producing an unpleasant crunching sound.
Seeing this, I released my grip on the handgun and forcefully wedged my hands into the gap of the doors. With all my strength, I pried them open slightly. The handgun fell from between the doors and landed on my foot, sending a jolt of pain through me. Cursing under my breath, I gritted my teeth and pushed harder until gradually, I managed to pry open a gap over a foot wide.
Footsteps approached from behind, followed by Fatty's voice: "Ghost Brother, we're here!"
I shifted slightly to my left to signal Fatty to stand on my right side so we could pull the doors open together, leaving space for Kong Xuan to rush in and confront the shadow.
At that moment, Cheng Yongqi's screams from inside the elevator suddenly stopped. She stood up with a vacant expression. I had a bad feeling creeping over me; sure enough, Cheng Yongqi gave me a strange smile and kicked towards my groin.
Damn it! I came here to save you, and you're kicking me? Although I knew she was already controlled by the black mist, it still didn't sit well with me.
Cheng Yongqi's kick was powerful; if it connected, I'd probably spend the rest of my life studying ancient texts like the Sunflower Manual. With no other choice, I let go of the elevator door and leaped back just as her thick leg retracted instantly. With a loud clang, the elevator doors slammed shut and began moving upward.
I cursed and rushed to the elevator buttons, frantically pressing the up button, hoping that the other elevators would arrive quickly. Kong Xuan glanced around and shouted at me, "There's no time! Take the stairs!"
Right, if it was just a short sprint to the sixth floor, we should be able to reach it faster than the elevator. I quickly picked up the gun from the ground and tossed it into the Mustard Seed Pendant. I flashed a grin at Kang Qin without explaining and dashed toward the emergency exit, with Kong Xuan and the others following closely behind.
We raced to the sixth floor, and as we pushed open the fire door, the elevator dinged and slowly opened its doors.
At that moment, Cheng Yongqi collapsed from inside the elevator, landing flat on her back. Blood pooled between her mouth and nose, and she lay completely still.
"Cheng Yongqi! Cheng Yongqi!" I shouted as I rushed over.
Cheng Yongqi showed no response. Just as I was about to crouch down to help her, a hand reached out from beside me and grabbed my arm. I turned to see Kang Qin. He cleared his throat and pointed at Cheng Yongqi's body, his voice hoarse as he said, "She's already dead!"
Looking closely, I realized that Cheng Yongqi was indeed dead. Although her face was upturned, she wasn't lying on her back; she was face down, but her head had been twisted one hundred eighty degrees. Due to the excess flesh, I couldn't tell which side was which.
No one could survive with their neck twisted one hundred eighty degrees.
I cursed again and looked around, noticing that four words were written in blood inside the elevator.
The great revenge has been avenged.
