Zhong Kui's Diary
When Sister Mei left, she took the door with her, leaving Manager Zhang and President Wang standing at the entrance, looking bewildered. Manager Zhang's face was a bit pale, while President Wang, although somewhat awkward, managed to smile and greet us.
"Are you Sister Rong?" I nodded at President Wang, signaling for the two of them to sit down.
"Yes!" The woman known as President Wang, Sister Rong, showed a flicker of panic in her eyes before finally sitting down with a smile.
"Then you must be Hui?" I turned to Manager Zhang and smiled.
"Um..." Hui suddenly looked flustered, her face alternating between red and white, tears welling up in her eyes. Finally, she burst into tears, "Boss, I was just following orders. Please don't hit me!"
I cleared my throat and gave Fatty a knowing glance. Fatty immediately understood and said fiercely, "You will answer whatever I ask you. Otherwise, I'll make sure you regret it!"
Upon hearing Fatty's words, Hui turned even paler and trembled like a leaf. Seeing this, Sister Rong mustered her courage and stood up, putting an arm around Hui's shoulder. "Whatever you want to ask us, we will answer. Just don't scare my sister."
I didn't expect you to be so loyal; I admire those who stand up for their own in critical moments. Old sayings often claim that loyalty is usually found among scoundrels. I smiled and decided not to intimidate them further. "Alright, you can sit down now. Actually, I'm just curious about how you managed to lure us in. You should know that we voluntarily acted like ducks entering your room."
Sister Rong sat back down with Hui and patted her shoulder before giving me a slight smile. "At first, when we received this... task, we put in quite a bit of thought. After all, Boss Ma offered us ten thousand yuan each as a reward; we had to live up to that amount, right?"
What integrity! What professionalism! I sighed inwardly. If everyone shared your mindset, we would have long surpassed the decayed capitalism.
Seeing my expression improve, Sister Rong spoke more naturally: "The first thing we needed to do was attract your attention; this is crucial. We had to make sure you noticed us first instead of us delivering goods directly to you. This way, it wouldn't raise your suspicions and would deepen your impression of us."
"So you made a scene outside our room under the pretense of being drunk?" I chuckled.
"Yes, pretending to be drunk is a great excuse. In reality, we hardly drank anything; we just splashed some alcohol on ourselves. With such a strong smell of alcohol wafting around us, anyone would assume we were already drunk," Sister Rong smiled at me again. It seemed she had regained her composure and even exuded a hint of charm. "Plus, with Li shouting a few things, you'd think we were just drunken office workers and wouldn't suspect us anymore."
"Then what happened next?" I nodded. "Actually, what I'm most curious about is how you knew Fatty would call your room."
"We had hints before entering the room that we wouldn't be looking for ducks; that was the first mental cue," Hui said under Sister Rong's comforting touch. She had calmed down now and no longer appeared frightened as she hesitantly added, "Then I called your room asking if you wanted any ducks for entertainment; that was the second cue. Generally speaking, if someone is perceptive enough to catch those two hints, they would try calling our room, and naturally, we wouldn't refuse."
Perceptive? That must have been Fatty's doing; it had nothing to do with me.
I laughed and said, "I want to ask, if these two hints don't work, what will you do?"
"If you don't take action, then the only option left is the last step. We will pretend to have entered the wrong room, knock on your door, and then, oh, our duck has arrived so quickly?" Sister Rong smiled as she revealed their entire plan.
"I hope you don't mind me asking, have you ever been a psychological counselor?" I forced a smile.
"I took psychology as an elective in college," Sister Rong replied lightly, stopping there as if she didn't want to delve deeper into the topic.
I chuckled, "Well then, it seems we've taken the bait. That President Ma can't just want you to sleep with us for one night, right?"
"Definitely not. Before we came here, he had someone give us two pills that would make our skin cold after taking them. Then you would realize we are ghosts," Hui said with a frown. "He emphasized one point: we must casually relay a piece of information to you. I feel like scaring you is just a facade; telling you this information is President Ma's main purpose."
"What information?" I recalled carefully but couldn't remember Hui mentioning anything important to us.
"It's about the boss on the fourth floor and his secretary doing it in the bathroom," Hui said, her eyes wide as she looked at me.
"But isn't the boss on the fourth floor..." Fatty interjected but was silenced when I patted him on the shoulder. He looked at me in confusion.
I knew he meant Ma Zhenkai was the boss on the fourth floor, but I didn't think this was something I should tell Sister Rong and the others. Knowing too much can be a bad thing; subconsciously, I was protecting Sister Rong and them.
"Give me a cigarette, Ding Zong," I said lightly.
Fatty handed me a cigarette and then gave one to Kong Xuan. After lighting them, we fell silent.
"So, you actually didn't see anything about the boss on the top floor?" I asked Hui.
"Yeah, although Li took us to Baisheng Building's 14th floor to buy jewelry, we never went to the fourth floor at all. Everything was instructed by President Ma over the phone," Hui nodded and then frowned slightly. "By the way, President Ma also wanted us to emphasize that the other three people are employees of Nia Company on the 17th floor."
"The other three are from Nia Company?" I instinctively repeated.
"Yes."
After asking a few more questions, I told Sister Rong and the other person to leave first. Hui said hesitantly, "But you already ordered for both of us, right?"
Well, my mind was filled with doubts, and I had no intention of engaging in a lengthy debate. I chuckled and took out a stack of money, handing it to them both. "This is the overnight fee you gave me last time. I'm returning it to you, and the extra can be considered as payment for the table."
"That’s too generous; we can't accept it without doing anything in return," Sister Rong shook her head in refusal but then smiled and said, "How about we quickly resolve this now?"
"Let's save it for another day," I insisted, shoving the money into Sister Rong's hand. What kind of joke is this? There’s no proper venue here; do you think I would engage in that kind of activity at a Mahjong table? What if the Mahjong tiles got damaged?
"Then leave me your phone number. If you're interested later, I can deliver right to your door, dear, free shipping!" Sister Rong said with a smile as she took out her phone.
Reluctantly, I had to give her my number. I knew she intended to call me right there so we could save each other's numbers easily. As for the rumors about not giving my number to women, I didn’t take them seriously at all. Not every woman is that precious; nowadays, women have good qualities and might even worry about being harmed by someone like me.
After Sister Rong and Hui left, Fatty immediately spoke up, "Ghost Brother, what’s going on with Ma Zhenkai? Is he really paying someone to play this kind of joke on us? Are you close with him? If he wants Hui to tell us about his ambiguous relationship with the Secretary, what does that mean? Is he trying to show off? Is being a secretary something impressive?"
Hearing Fatty say this made me laugh because it reminded me of a joke about two classmates who met after many years and shared their current situations. One classmate said he had been working hard for six or seven years as a secretary in a big company, earning around seven or eight thousand a month. The other classmate said he had also worked hard for six or seven years but was now running his own company as a secretary, earning about the same amount. The same title of "secretary" carried different meanings depending on who held it.
Noticing Fatty's unfriendly expression, I quickly cleared my throat and said, "I think Ma Zhenkai wants to tell us that the three people spying on him from the rooftop are from Nia Company. By the way, could those three be Du Weidong and his companions?"
Kong Xuan had been silent until now but couldn't help but scoff at my suggestion. "Don't just pin everything on Du Weidong and his group; that matter is already settled. Chen Fei'er even wrote on the wall that revenge has been taken care of; now she's singing 'Visit Home Often' on the Naihe Bridge..."
"I was just saying it casually! Anyway, I'm going to Baisheng Building to clarify things with Ma Zhenkai; otherwise, I'll have this knot in my heart," I replied in confusion.
Fatty realized I was no longer interested in health treatment and followed me out. We hailed a taxi to Baisheng Building.
After pressing the elevator button, damn it, another elevator slowly stopped in front of us. The three of us exchanged glances and stepped inside.
With Kong Xuan around, what was there to fear?
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, we heard footsteps outside along with a male voice shouting, "Wait up! Wait up!"
Since we had nothing better to do, I pressed the open door button. A man in a white shirt rushed in breathlessly and smiled apologetically at us three. When he saw me standing by the elevator control panel, he said, "Thanks, brother!"
I pressed the button for the sixth floor.
Seeing this person dressed like a business elite, he might be an employee of the insurance company on the sixth floor. He smiled lightly and said, "Are you from Anping Insurance?"
The man nodded and replied, "Yes, yes." He then magically took out an exquisite business card holder and handed us a card that read Client Manager Liu Zihao.
I took the card without comment, planning to throw it away as soon as he left, but I smiled and said, "Anping for peace, heh heh. It seems like things aren't very peaceful on your sixth floor. The girl who died first was under the temporary care of your company, Zhou Xiaoping, right?"
A strange expression flashed across Liu Zihao's face: "Zhou Xiaoping is my mother."
I was taken aback. What a coincidence! Just then, the elevator dinged and the doors opened. Liu Zihao waved goodbye to us, saying to call if we needed anything, and stepped out.
Just as the door was about to close, I quickly pressed the open button, stepped out of the elevator, and called out to Liu Zihao, "Hey, Liu Zihao, wait a moment."
Liu Zihao turned around, smiling at me, but his eyes showed undeniable confusion. "Is there something you need?"
I glanced around and pushed open the fire door to the emergency exit. "Let's talk here."
Liu Zihao looked at me suspiciously but ultimately followed me out. Soon after, Fatty and Kong Xuan also walked over in confusion, not understanding what I meant. They were probably thinking that he was just Zhou Xiaoping's son; what could be worth asking? The matter with Chen Fei'er had already concluded.
