Zhong Kui's Diary
As for Ma Zhenkai, the mastermind behind the black mist, I don't want to pursue it any further. There are no laws to balance the act of using ghosts to kill, and since we weren't harmed, we can only let it go.
After escorting us to the elevator, Ma Xingrui handed us a tote bag and said with a smile, "This is 100,000. Please accept it."
He pressed the elevator button, and surprisingly, the same elevator opened its doors again. Both Kong Xuan and I were taken aback. "Hey, this is really strange!"
Ma Xingrui laughed heartily, "Did you buy accident insurance?"
Damn, that sounded ominous. But you can't point it out; doing so would only leave more traces.
The two of us stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the first floor as it began to descend.
I opened the tote bag and glanced at the stacks of cash before casually tossing them into the Mustard Seed Pendant. Stretching lazily, I said, "Finally settled! By the way, we can still stay in Moon City for a while. We should have some fun. What do you think about that Pearl of the Sea we talked about earlier?"
Unexpectedly, Kong Xuan didn't respond and seemed lost in thought.
"What's wrong?" I nudged Kong Xuan's shoulder.
Only then did Kong Xuan snap back to reality and replied with a smile, "It's nothing; just something I haven't figured out."
"What is it?"
"Zheng Nan, do you remember the bathroom in Ma Zhenkai's office? Wasn't there a Spell cast on the glass?" Kong Xuan asked.
"Yeah, right. That Spell was called Cloud Cover."
"I was wondering who put that Spell on the glass. It couldn't have been Ma Zhenkai himself. Even if he had the skills to maintain it for a long time, there would be no reason for him to set up a Spell to let others spy on his **. But... besides the black mist that Ma Zhenkai could control, who else could have that ability?"
"I was there at that time; maybe it was some rogue Taoists trying to study female physiology and deliberately created that illusion!" I joked.
"I don't think it looks quite right," Kong Xuan said, shaking his head. Then he exclaimed, "Why isn't this elevator opening?"
I turned around and noticed that the elevator display showed it was on the first floor, but the doors hadn't opened. I pressed the open button, but there was no response.
Damn it, is it broken again?
Just as I was cursing, the elevator jolted and started moving downward again. Soon, the control panel displayed -1.
It might really be a malfunction.
I was about to think this when I realized the elevator didn't stop; instead, it continued descending without pause, and the numbers on the control panel began to change rapidly.
-.
-.
-4.
...
What the hell, this building only has a -1 floor; where did -4 come from?
The elevator's speed increased, and the numbers on the control panel changed even faster. Both Kong Xuan and I instinctively grabbed onto the handrails of the elevator, staring at the rapidly fluctuating numbers on the display.
-5.
-5.
-54.
I felt like I was on a roller coaster, my heart almost leaping into my throat. The sudden drop made me unable to help but scream, my hands gripping the handrails tightly, as if a drowning person were clinging to a piece of driftwood, refusing to let go even in death.
-166.
-167.
-168.
I was completely upside down in the air; if it weren't for my hands holding onto the handrails, I would surely have been pressed against the ceiling of the cabin. At this speed of descent, I felt like a falling leaf, completely unable to control myself.
The immense pressure made my insides churn uncontrollably, and I finally couldn't hold back any longer and vomited. Due to the rapid descent, what I expelled splattered all over my face, the sour smell making my stomach churn even more, leading to further vomiting, resulting in even more mess on my face.
After finally managing to stop throwing up, I felt completely numb. The only thought in my mind was when this elevator would finally reach the ground. Even if it crashed and shattered me into pieces right now, it wouldn't matter; this feeling of rapid descent was just too unbearable.
I don't know how long it took, but with a buzzing sound, the elevator began to slow down. Just as we gradually descended to the ground due to inertia, the elevator came to a stop. I wiped my face with my sleeve and looked at the control panel; the red digital display glaringly showed:
-999.
Damn, we actually reached level -999. What the hell is going on?
I glanced at Kong Xuan and saw that his face was as pale as paper, though he seemed better off than me—at least he hadn't vomited all over himself.
I took off my jacket and wiped my head with it a few times before tossing it aside. "Kong Xuan, do you know what's going on?"
Kong Xuan shook his head, his brow furrowed and his expression not looking good as he seemed to be holding back discomfort. "I don't know anything; let me catch my breath first."
Just as I was about to ask what was going on, Kong Xuan suddenly squatted down and started to vomit. After he finished, he wiped his mouth with his sleeve, stood up, and pointed at the elevator control panel. "Zheng Nan, let's open the door and see what's outside."
I pulled out my gun and told Kong Xuan to get ready before pressing the door open button.
Damn, what kind of place is the -999th floor? What could possibly be behind this door?
With a ding, the elevator doors opened.
Honestly, before the door opened, several images flashed through my mind—either a creepy cave or an underground hall. In any case, they were all related to the depths below. What a joke; it was showing -999 floors! Even if the elevator's LCD display was malfunctioning, we couldn't be mistaken about the rapid descent we had just experienced.
Once the door opened, both Kong Xuan and I were stunned. Outside the elevator was actually a street—a street I recognized well because we had just walked down it moments ago.
This street was unmistakably the one in front of Baisheng Building; I even saw the sign of the restaurant where we had eaten. Looking around, I noticed the sun overhead and a clean road beneath our feet. Every building, sign, and even the placement of trash cans were identical to those above.
The only difference was that there wasn't a single person on this street; it was completely empty, as if we were standing in a dead city with no signs of life.
I stared blankly at everything in front of me without turning around and directly asked Kong Xuan, "So, can you explain this?"
"It's an illusion; it must be an illusion!" Kong Xuan murmured beside me.
Even if I could experience illusions, how could you—being a Taoist master—fall into one? I raised my gun and fired at the lightbox across the street.
Bang!
Ping!
After the gunshot, the glass on that lightbox shattered into pieces.
"I'm showing you with action that this is not an illusion!" I shouted at Kong Xuan.
"Alright, this is not an illusion!" Kong Xuan slapped his face, trying hard to wake himself up.
"What do we do next?" I asked, as this clearly exceeded human understanding, so I naturally had to follow Kong Xuan's lead.
"The first step is to get out of the elevator!" Kong Xuan finally returned to a normal state and stepped outside. I followed closely behind him. As soon as we stepped out, the elevator door behind us closed with a ding. Looking back, I was surprised to see that the elevator lobby behind us was exactly the same as the one on the first floor of Baisheng Building.
It felt as if the Baisheng Building had been split in half by a giant butcher's knife and then shifted in a direction, making this elevator face the street. It was truly bizarre.
I held my handgun and followed Kong Xuan onto the street. "What do we do next?"
Kong Xuan squinted at the sky outside and said slowly, "Next, we wait for the owner of this place to come out and chat with us about life aspirations."
"The owner of this place?" I was about to ask what he meant when a loud noise came from above, followed by a familiar tune. The sound was unmistakably the entrance music of Gambling God; Chow Yun-fat and Stephen Chow made their entrances like this.
"Could it be Gambling God?" I asked Kong Xuan in surprise.
"See for yourself!" Kong Xuan nodded towards the sky.
I looked in the direction he pointed and saw someone walking down slowly—a very flashy person.
Dressed in a black trench coat with a white scarf, sporting a slicked-back hairstyle and shiny leather shoes, he had a toothpick in his mouth and was skillfully shuffling a deck of cards in his hand.
Is this guy really Gambling God? Can Gambling God even fly?
As the music stopped, the man in black reached us and moved his mouth, shifting the toothpick from his left side to his right: "Welcome to Azure Abyss."
"What pineapple hot spring?" I asked honestly; I couldn't quite catch what he said through the toothpick.
The man spat out the toothpick: "Bilu! Boi—Bilu, lewu oh—luo, Azure Abyss! Do you know Bai Juyi's Eternal Regret Song? 'Up to the blue sky and down to the yellow springs, both places are vast and indistinct.' Truly ignorant people don't know fear; uneducated people don't know shame."
"Ah, Mr. Azure Abyss, what guidance do you have for us?" It seemed this guy had some serious skills; I wasn't sure if I could shoot him, so I decided to ask about the situation first.
"Shut up, my name is Ji Wuyuan. Ultimate boss of Underworld, cough cough, one of them." The man in black spat disdainfully. Wow, he really was a big boss in Underworld; that spit created a hole the size of a bucket in the cement floor beneath him.
"Brother Chicken! So what do you have to say?" I smiled awkwardly.
"Someone hired me to kill you two. Originally, I could have just taken care of you in the elevator, but I'm a kind-hearted person. I don't want you to die without understanding what's going on, so I brought you down here. Now, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll tell you everything I know!" Ji Wuyuan casually reached out his hand towards me, and with a strong force, my gun flew out of my hand and landed directly in his grasp.
Like a child playing with clay, Ji Wuyuan squeezed and kneaded the gun a few times until it was reduced to a lump of metal. He tossed the lump onto the ground and looked at me with a grin.
Brother Chicken really is something!
I turned my gaze to Kong Xuan, who happened to be looking at me as well. We both saw confusion in each other's eyes: Have you offended anyone recently? We both shook our heads slightly, indicating we hadn't wronged anyone.
Who on earth is this guy? I couldn't help but ask, "Since that's the case, let me ask you: who exactly is trying to kill me? You being an ultimate boss of Underworld, it seems like only someone significant could afford your services."
Ji Wuyuan seemed pleased with my flattery; he raised an eyebrow and laughed heartily before naming someone.
Ma Xingrui!
