Zhong Kui's Diary
I exchanged a glance with Fatty, and we both rushed into the bathroom, only to see Lingfeng staring at us in shock while holding a razor.
“Lingfeng, did you see something?” Fatty shouted.
Lingfeng looked puzzled and asked, “What are you two doing?”
“You called out just now, so we came to ask you what’s going on,” I replied. I found Lingfeng's question strange; if you hadn't yelled, why would we rush in? Were we here to watch you shower? Do you think you're Master Cang?
“I called out?” Lingfeng scratched his head in confusion. “I was just getting ready to shave. Why would I call out?”
What was going on? I turned to Kong Xuan: “Did you hear anything just now?”
Kong Xuan frowned and nodded. “Yes, I heard Lingfeng call out too.”
Lingfeng looked even more astonished. “I didn’t even realize I called out. This is too bizarre!”
Kong Xuan didn’t say much, motioning for Lingfeng to step out for a moment while he went inside. After looking around with a frown, he shook his head and came back out. “Nothing unusual!”
Lingfeng mumbled as he went back to showering, and the three of us sat down by the bed, exchanging glances.
Could it be that all three of us experienced auditory hallucinations? That seemed impossible. If there was even a chance of that happening, we might as well go downstairs and buy a few dozen tickets for the Dual Color Ball; we’d surely win.
The only explanation was that Lingfeng had some sort of illusion; he clearly called out but didn’t realize it. It’s been reported that this is known as pre-marital anxiety syndrome, which can lead people to experience visual and auditory hallucinations.
While Lingfeng was showering, I asked Fatty to fill Kong Xuan in on what had just happened. Kong Xuan scoffed, “Yo Xie, did the face in the mirror smile at you? What’s so funny about that?”
Fatty looked deeply troubled. “This isn’t really the time for jokes.”
From Kong Xuan's expression, I could tell that he, like me, believed that Fatty was hallucinating, and he didn't rule out the possibility that Fatty thought we were joking with him.
"Why don't you go take a look?" I coughed lightly.
Kong Xuan laughed heartily and followed us back to the room. He approached the mirror in the bathroom, glanced around, then turned and shook his head. "There’s really nothing unusual, Fatty!"
A look of indignation suddenly appeared on Fatty's face. "So you all think I'm lying to you?"
I patted Fatty on the shoulder and forced a smile. "We’ve been in the same car all day, everyone is tired. Suddenly coming into contact with cold water can easily lead to..."
Before I could finish my sentence, a strange expression suddenly crossed Fatty's face, a mix of fear and surprise. He was making incoherent sounds, seemingly lost in thought.
"What’s wrong?" Both Kong Xuan and I asked simultaneously.
"Gurgle, gurgle, mirror..." Fatty struggled to utter those two words, trembling as he pointed behind us.
A sense of foreboding washed over me instantly. I turned around sharply to look at the mirror.
Sure enough, a pale face appeared in the mirror, grinning at us ominously. Although it made no sound, the eerie feeling made my muscles tense up and my hair stand on end.
Damn, there really is a face in the mirror.
Kong Xuan paused for a moment before scolding lightly. He formed a spell with his hand and quickly drew a symbol in the air, then pointed it toward the forehead of the face in the mirror.
With a "hiss," it sounded like a red-hot iron rod being thrown into cold water. A white mist enveloped Kong Xuan's finger as the face in the mirror twisted continuously. With a soft pop, the face seemed to be drawn toward Kong Xuan's finger as if by a powerful magnet. In an instant, the entire face was sucked onto Kong Xuan's fingertip. He pulled his hand back to examine it under the light and saw a blob darker than ink at his fingertip.
"This is a Shadow Spirit; how could it appear here?" Kong Xuan frowned as he scrutinized the dark spot on his fingertip.
"What is this? This is a Shadow Spirit, how could it appear here?" I moved closer.
"Don't get too close. This is a Shadow Spirit; it can possess you, and that would be troublesome," Kong Xuan said, leaning back slightly and pushing his other hand towards me, signaling me to step back.
Upon hearing Kong Xuan, Fatty and I quickly took two steps back.
Kong Xuan cautiously took out an ancient copper box from his body, opened it, and placed his fingers inside. With a sharp command, the black spot on his hand was immediately squeezed into the copper box. As soon as it touched the bottom of the box, the black spot emitted a puff of green smoke and gradually transformed before disappearing.
After closing the copper box, Kong Xuan frowned and said, "It often appears in the form of a human smile, which is why it is called a Shadow Spirit. It is extremely cunning and rarely shows itself to humans. An appearance like this, floating in a mirror as if to show off, is truly unprecedented."
"Are you saying it's tired of living and has come out to seek death?" I asked, bewildered.
Kong Xuan shook his head, indicating that he wasn't very sure either.
"Uh, could it be trying to deliberately attract our attention?" Fatty suddenly chimed in.
"Pfft, what do we have that would attract its attention?" I laughed and cursed, just as I was about to call the two of them to leave when I noticed Kong Xuan's expression suddenly turn extremely grim.
"Draw the tiger away from its mountain lair!" Fatty shouted beside me.
In an instant, a thunderclap echoed in my mind as I looked at Kong Xuan. He was staring at me as well, and we both shouted at the same time: "Lingfeng!"
Damn it, this Shadow Spirit is trying to lure us away from Lingfeng.
Without hesitation, we quickly ran to the adjacent room. The door was already closed. Kong Xuan fished out a magnetic card from his pocket and swiped it several times against the door's magnetic sensor. However, it seemed there was an issue with the sensor; all we heard was a buzzing sound, but the door refused to open.
"Stand back!" I shouted and took two steps back. Kong Xuan and Fatty moved aside to create space on either side. I rushed forward and kicked the door with all my might.
With a loud "bang," I kicked the door open.
Fatty and Kong Xuan rushed in almost simultaneously. The door was only so wide, and with Fatty being so big, they both got stuck at the entrance.
I cursed and grabbed the collars of both of them, pulling them back with all my strength. They were already preparing to retreat, and my pull caused them to stumble backward. I didn't care about them and dashed inside.
Running to the bathroom, I saw Lingfeng lying on the ground, motionless, and I couldn't tell if he was dead or alive. On his face, a pale human face was continuously twisting, seemingly trying to merge into Lingfeng's features.
I rushed forward and grabbed the shadow spirit that was there, intending to pull it away.
To my surprise, the shadow spirit felt icy cold to the touch and transformed into a wisp of white smoke that slipped into my palm.
"Don't grab it!" Kong Xuan shouted sharply from behind.
Damn it, would it kill you to shout earlier?
I quickly retracted my hand and desperately shook it, trying to throw off the white smoke. However, the smoke clung to my palm like a parasite, continuously seeping into my hand. In just a blink of an eye, a large portion of the smoke had already entered, and I could clearly see a white line racing up my wrist along my veins.
"Damn it, Kong Xuan, what's going on?" I yelled at Kong Xuan.
Seeing this, Kong Xuan's eyes flashed with determination. He bit his tongue and sprayed a mist of blood above my arm while shouting, "Aging!"
A tremendous pressure instantly enveloped my arm. It felt as if my hand had been placed inside a pressure cooker, with immense force squeezing from all sides.
Kong Xuan swiftly reached out and tore off my sleeve with a rip, exposing the skin on my arm where I could clearly see the moving white line.
The white line that had been rapidly ascending slowed down under this pressure and nearly stopped at my elbow joint without continuing upward. At this moment, Kong Xuan seemed to relax slightly. He rummaged through his pocket for a while before finding two steel needles about ten centimeters long. He then took out the copper box from earlier and said without looking up, "Bear with it and don't move."
Before the words left my mouth, Kong Xuan suddenly jabbed one of the steel needles into the crook of my elbow. A sharp pain shot through me, causing my entire body to shudder, and I couldn't help but curse out loud, "Kong Xuan, damn you!"
Fortunately, Kong Xuan's Aging Spell held my arm firmly in place; otherwise, I would have instinctively pulled my hand back. Despite this, my other hand instinctively pushed toward Kong Xuan's head.
Fatty quickly grabbed my hand and shouted, "Ghost Brother, Xuan is trying to help you, just hang in there!"
Fatty's shout brought me back to my senses. I focused and noticed that the white line at my elbow was gradually retreating toward my palm due to the needle.
After retreating about five centimeters, the white line stopped moving. At that moment, Kong Xuan forcefully inserted another steel needle at the top of the white line. Another wave of intense pain hit me, and this time I couldn't even curse; I let out a cry and grabbed onto Fatty's arm, twisting it fiercely.
Instantly, Fatty's face contorted in agony, tears welling up in his eyes as he stomped his foot on the ground and shouted, "Kong Xuan, damn you!"
Kong Xuan paid no attention to our suffering and focused intently on the white line on my arm. After inserting the needle, the white line began to slowly retreat toward my palm again. When it had retreated about four or five centimeters and stopped moving, Kong Xuan pulled out the back needle and inserted it at the front again, step by step driving the white line back toward my palm.
Amidst our cries of distress, Kong Xuan finally pushed the white line to the center of my palm. He formed a Spell with his hand, drew a talisman, and pressed it against my palm. Before long, all the white mist was absorbed into the tip of Kong Xuan's finger and condensed into a black dot. Following the previous method, he dropped this black dot into a copper box to eliminate it.
After securing the copper box and removing the steel needles, Kong Xuan finally lifted the Aging Spell. Without caring about my expression, he walked over to Lingfeng's side, squatted down, and reached out to check Lingfeng's breath.
At that moment, Lingfeng's face had turned a deathly gray.
