Zhong Kui's Diary
"Should we go back?" I suggested as I looked behind.
"Even if we go back, that guy will still continue to chase us. At this rate, he will eventually kill us. The only way to escape this situation is to move forward," the Scarred Boss said, licking his lips with a fierce look in his eyes.
I looked at the fifty-meter-wide firebreak in front of us, empty in the middle, and the Helicopter hovering above it. The menacing face of Kong Xuan seemed to appear before me. Damn, a rogue who can cast spells is unstoppable. What’s even more frustrating is that this spell-casting rogue has the strong support of the Ling Family. Clearly, renting a Military Helicopter isn’t something you can do for just a few dozen bucks.
I gritted my teeth and asked, "So what do we do?"
The Scarred Boss squinted at the hovering Helicopter, and after a moment, he lowered his head and spat angrily, "I can't think of any other way right now. If I had known earlier, I would have had someone bring a Rocket Launcher to blow that guy up!"
Before he finished speaking, a sharp whistling sound rang out as something smoking came flying towards us.
Damn it, you jinx! What kind of Rocket Launcher? I instinctively pulled the Scarred Boss aside.
Boom.
The bush where we had been hiding was instantly blown into a Big Pit by the Rocket Launcher, and the scattered bushes caught fire, flames leaping high and thick smoke billowing.
I spat out the dirt from my mouth, anger rising from my heart as I drew my pistol and fired several shots at the Helicopter until I emptied the magazine.
One bullet hit the Helicopter's fuselage with a ping sound. The pilot seemed to be wary and began to maneuver the helicopter upward. It climbed to about one hundred meters before stopping. At this distance, my pistol posed almost no threat to him, while his Gatling Gun was still quite effective against us.
Kong Xuan was well aware of my weapon situation and knew that my gun was neither a rifle nor a powerful handgun like a Desert Eagle; that’s why he ordered the pilot to hover at this height.
A look of surprise flashed across the Scarred Boss's eyes; he seemed not to understand where I had gotten my pistol from. However, he wasn't particularly concerned about that; he was more focused on how to charge forward. Seeing the Helicopter rise significantly, he patted my shoulder and said, "Since you have a gun, that's an opportunity. While the helicopter hasn't come down yet, we should split up and rush over! Zheng Nan, let me tell you this: if we get separated, just head deep into the forest. There might be some poisonous insects or wild beasts outside; you must push through. Once you get past them, you'll see a stream."
At this point, the Scarred Boss paused and swallowed hard. A thought flashed through my mind: could he be giving his last words? I cursed myself for being superstitious and continued to listen intently.
The Scarred Boss continued, "The stream isn't wide and the water is shallow, but whatever you do, don't wade through it. I won't explain why; just don't go into the water. Follow the stream upstream until you see a stone bridge. Cough cough, there might be some trouble on the bridge; I don't have time to explain it all. No matter what happens, you must cross the stone bridge and keep going until you see a big tree. Stop there and wait for nightfall; then light this firework signal and someone will come to pick you up!"
He pulled out a firework from his pocket and handed it to me. It was quite exquisite, and at first glance, I thought it was a pen.
"Big tree? There are plenty of big trees in this forest; can you be more specific?" I took the firework.
"No need for me to explain; when you see it, you'll understand!" A strange expression appeared on Scarred Boss's face, and he then cleared his throat softly, "Of course, this is just a precaution. At this distance, the chance of us getting separated is quite low."
I didn't care about how Scarred Boss would react upon seeing the Mustard Seed Pendant. I casually stuffed the firework into the Mustard Seed Pendant and pulled out a new magazine to load: "Alright, I'll shoot a few rounds at the helicopter first, then we run!"
Scarred Boss nodded. I counted down in a low voice:
"1—"
"—"
With a shout, I charged out with my gun raised, running while firing at the helicopter above. Bang bang bang! Bullets whizzed through the air.
The helicopter pilot seemed momentarily stunned and instinctively pulled the helicopter higher, giving Scarred Boss and me the chance to make our escape.
Forty meters, thirty meters, twenty meters—at that moment, I felt like a wild boar that had consumed three pounds of Viagra, crazily charging forward.
The helicopter swooped down again with a shrill cry from above. Gritting my teeth, I disregarded everything and executed a Fish Leap Forward Roll to the left front. Behind me came a thunderous explosion; my previous position had likely been obliterated by a Rocket Launcher.
There was no time to look back. After rolling forward, I continued sprinting ahead.
Ten meters, five meters, three meters, one meter!
Just as we were about to enter the dense forest, gunfire erupted behind us. Then I heard a strange sound that resembled a butcher lifting a heavy cleaver and striking it into meat at a pork stall. The sound was dull yet piercing; I could almost visualize the meat splitting and bones breaking.
Turning to look in the direction of the sound felt like watching in slow motion. Scarred Boss was propelled forward into the air for three meters before crashing down with a thud. He bounced slightly before lying motionless on the ground. His back had been shredded by the Gatling Gun, revealing several fist-sized gaping wounds. Clearly, he was beyond saving.
Another round of tapping sounds echoed, and I shouted as I flew to the right, rolling into the dense forest and quickly getting up to run deeper, zigzagging left and right.
As the Scarred Boss had said, the Helicopter did not follow but hovered outside the forest, firing its Gatling Gun into the thicket. In an instant, tree bark flew everywhere and dirt splattered. I ran desperately deeper into the woods, finally stopping after about five minutes, gasping for breath.
Damn, I was finally a bit safer.
Just as I was about to sit down and rest for a while, Kong Xuan's voice came through a loudspeaker from afar: "Zhong, don’t think that just because you’ve entered the Netherworld, I have no way to deal with you. Yes, the magnetic field in the Netherworld is chaotic, and the Helicopter can't get close. So what? I'm going back to bring a special forces team over; I don’t believe I can’t kill you!"
With that, the sound of the helicopter gradually faded into the distance.
Special forces? Keep dreaming.
I shook my head and chuckled bitterly. Despite Kong Xuan chasing me all this way, I didn’t hate him. What I wanted most was to wait until his anger subsided before explaining that it was all due to the Six God Monk's meddling. Right now, anything I said would be pointless.
Damn it, it’s been almost a week; why hasn’t his anger cooled down at all?
After resting for a while, I took out a bottle of mineral water, twisted off the cap, and gulped it down in one go. Tossing the empty bottle aside, it hit the ground with a hollow sound. I wiped my mouth and reloaded my handgun before moving deeper into the forest.
Earlier, Scarred Boss had mentioned that there would be some poisonous insects and fierce beasts around the outskirts of the forest. This made me somewhat uneasy. In my previous self, I might have scoffed at such threats; poisonous insects and fierce beasts were like delicacies to me—things like snake gallbladders and tiger penises came from them after all.
But ever since encountering giant wild boars in Tianzhuang Township and seeing yellow-scaled pythons in ancient tombs, my perception of poisonous insects and fierce beasts had changed. Gripping my handgun tightly, I wondered if it could even take down those giant beasts.
Walking anxiously for over an hour without encountering any poisonous insects or fierce beasts—not even a rabbit—I occasionally heard unknown insect sounds or rustling wings in trees but saw no birds when I looked up.
The further I went in, the thicker the trees became. Eventually, I found myself surrounded by trees with diameters of over two meters. The canopy was exceptionally dense, blocking out all sunlight above. A thick layer of fallen leaves covered the ground; the bottom layer had rotted into a black mush that crunched underfoot and bubbled up black foam with each step.
Checking the time, it was now a quarter past four in the afternoon. Could it be that these poisonous insects and fierce beasts were having afternoon tea? Or were they lurking nearby, waiting for me to tire out before coming out to deal with me?
I glanced at my phone for signal—of course, there was none. It seemed that the magnetic field here was indeed quite strong. Putting my phone away and looking ahead, I noticed an exceptionally large tree. If my estimation was correct, its diameter must be at least six meters.
Honestly, this is the largest tree I have ever seen. A diameter of six meters is quite a concept. To give a simple example, our beds are usually about two meters long, which means this tree's diameter is as thick as three beds lined up together.
Is this the big tree mentioned by the Scarred Boss? No, that can't be right; I haven't even crossed the stone bridge yet.
I approached this giant tree with a sense of admiration. Before I could even marvel at it, a hoarse voice came from behind the tree: "Hey! Do a good deed and spare some change!"
I was taken aback, not out of fear, but out of surprise.
There are actually other people in this dense forest?
There are actually other Star City people in this dense forest?
I have been to many places and have heard many dialects. Each dialect has its own particle words; for example, in Southern dialects, there are particles like 'ga', 'ga', and 'zhe' used at the end of sentences. The same sentence can have different particle endings; for instance, 'spare some change' can be said as 'spare some change na' or 'spare some change lo', while the dialect from Star City uses 'spare some change sa'.
I actually encountered a beggar from Star City in a dense forest called Netherworld in Northwest?
Seeing that I remained silent for a while, the hoarse voice continued, "Don't be angry, just bring some water to drink, okay?"
The voice came from behind the tree. I turned around and saw a middle-aged man in tattered clothes leaning against the tree, looking at me weakly.
