Zhong Kui's Diary
The combat strength of the Black-Faced Man was clearly far superior to that of the Scarred Man and Yang Zi. With his arrival, the situation in the arena changed dramatically; Sima Sanguang completely lost the earlier air of control and became constrained.
I had no intention of stepping in to help. Although Sima Sanguang was formidable, he had nothing to do with me. Moreover, Lou Wei and Yang Zi were acquaintances, so I definitely wouldn't hinder the Dragon Group.
Just as the battle was reaching a fever pitch, a sudden series of cracking sounds came from a distance, resembling footsteps, as if something large was approaching.
My heart tightened, and I quickly drew my gun, fully alert to the direction from which the sound was coming.
The cracking footsteps grew louder and closer until finally, a massive brown bear appeared in sight. Upon seeing the people fighting in the arena, a fierce glint flashed in the bear's eyes as it let out a roar and stood upright.
Damn, this brown bear stood at least three meters tall.
The four fighters in the arena also halted their actions. Yes, they were all Martial Arts Masters, but in front of such a giant bear, being a Martial Arts Master didn't count for much. If this giant bear got angry, no one would be able to escape unscathed.
Go ahead, try giving it a high five.
Even though everyone had stopped fighting, the brown bear did not abandon its hostile stance. It roared several more times, and to our horror, we heard several more roars coming from afar.
This creature actually had accomplices? And it seemed there was more than one.
Running away was unrealistic. I had previously seen a post out of boredom that debated whether brown bears or tigers would win in a fight. I don't remember who was deemed stronger, but both sides agreed on one point: brown bears are not slower than tigers and have incredible stamina. Exaggeratedly speaking, a brown bear can run several kilometers at a speed faster than that of a human hundred-meter champion without panting...
Playing dead was even more absurd. Brown bears are omnivores and have no dietary restrictions; they would gnaw on corpses if they found them. Even if they didn't eat corpses, how could a bear not notice you suddenly lying dead on the ground after seeing you alive just moments ago? If it licked your face with its barbed tongue, you would scream like a pig being slaughtered. Don't underestimate a bear's intelligence; after all, it has been outsmarting Bald Qiang for many episodes without losing ground...
To take it one step further, even if this brown bear had low intelligence and thought you were dead without licking you, have you considered that this massive creature could simply step on you or sit down? If you survive that, I'll treat you to fast food with an extra tea egg!
Running away is not an option, playing dead won't work either—what should we do? Several pairs of eyes instinctively turned toward the large tree in front of us; our only option now was to climb up into the tree. Although brown bears can climb trees, they are not particularly adept at it when they weigh around seven or eight hundred pounds. Due to their weight, they can only manage to climb about two meters before falling back down.
The first to move was the Scarred Man. He took a running start and quickly alternated his hands and feet on the trunk, soon climbing up to a branch about seven or eight meters off the ground. Following him were Yang Zi and the Black-Faced Man; both used their hands and feet as well and swiftly climbed up.
As for me, I took a running start and almost leaped up onto the branch. If it were just light-footedness, no one here could match me.
At this point, only Sima Sanguang was left below. The brown bear roared in anger, dropped to all fours, and charged at Sima Sanguang.
Sima Sanguang chuckled and jumped, grabbing a vine on the big tree. Using it for leverage, he propelled himself upward, gaining more than a person's height before pressing against the trunk and climbing up with hands and feet.
"Get down!" A cold voice rang out as the Black-Faced Man took the opportunity to kick toward Sima Sanguang's face.
Sima Sanguang cursed, slightly tilting his head to avoid the kick while swiftly extending his hand, fingers curled into a claw, aiming for the Black-Faced Man's right ankle. Clearly, he intended to grab the Black-Faced Man's foot and use it to propel himself upward.
But the Black-Faced Man was not so easily caught; he twisted his body and quickly retracted his right foot, using his left foot to kick at Sima Sanguang's temple. With no choice, Sima Sanguang had to change tactics on the fly, extending his arm to block the Black-Faced Man's kick.
Although he managed to protect his temple from injury, he was still kicked downwards. Below him was that menacing brown bear, waiting to pounce and tear him apart as soon as he fell.
A flash of silver appeared as a silver line shot out from Sima Sanguang's sleeve. At the other end of the line was an iron claw that clamped onto a branch above his head. Instantly, Sima Sanguang hung suspended in mid-air while the brown bear roared and stood upright, swinging its massive paw in a furious flurry.
Sima Sanguang swung his legs in the air, dodging the bear's attacks.
At that moment, the Black-Faced Man let out a cold laugh. A white light flashed in his hand as a dagger appeared: "I'll send you on your way! Enjoy playing with the bear; such opportunities are rare."
Edge walked over to where the iron claw was and raised his knife to cut the silver line.
Tsk tsk, this Black-Faced Man really lacks integrity.
My thoughts sometimes differ from others; I can't stand infighting. For example, if two brothers are fighting and an outsider intervenes, those two brothers should first unite to deal with the outsider before turning against each other. On a larger scale, no matter how fierce internal conflicts among Chinese people may be, when faced with an external threat, they should first join forces to drive away the invaders—this is what is meant by "first repel external threats before settling internal disputes."
The current situation is that beasts are challenging humans; thus, we should unite against the beasts first. Earlier when the Black-Faced Man kicked Sima Sanguang, I didn't react in time, which allowed him to succeed in his sneak attack. Seeing that Sima Sanguang was now in such peril and that the Black-Faced Man was about to strike again, I could no longer hold back.
I raised my hand and fired a shot; the bullet whizzed past the Black-Faced Man.
The Black-Faced Man froze for a moment, his whole body stiffening. After a while, he turned to look at me: "Mr. Zhong, what do you mean by this?"
"There's nothing to it. If you want to kill Sima Sanguang, I have no objections, but you can't do it this way; it's unfair to him!" I gestured toward the brown bear under the tree. "When people fight, there's no need to let a beast take advantage."
"I don't care about fairness!" The Black-Faced Man said, somewhat irritated.
"You may not care, but I do!" I replied with a smile.
The Scarred Man had been glaring at me since I fired my gun, crouched low like a tightly coiled spring, ready to pounce at any moment if I let my guard down.
Yang Zi seemed a bit troubled and said, "Zheng Nan, what are you doing?"
Ignoring her, I pointed my gun at the Black-Faced Man. "Step aside!"
The Black-Faced Man glared at me. "Mr. Zhong, you should know what forces I represent. If you shoot at me..."
Before he could finish his sentence, I chuckled and raised my hand to fire again. However, this shot whizzed past him once more. I wasn't afraid of threats; the more he wanted to save face, the less I would let him.
The anger in the Black-Faced Man's eyes intensified, but he ultimately stepped aside.
I approached and examined the silver wire, frowning because there was no way I could lift Sima Sanguang with one hand while holding the gun in the other. The wire was too thin, and it was difficult to alternate pulling it with one hand.
But as soon as I lowered my gun, the Black-Faced Man and his group would definitely rush over.
Just as I hesitated, Yang Zi walked up to me. "I'll help you!"
"Yang Zi! What are you doing?" The Black-Faced Man shouted angrily.
Yang Zi remained silent, standing beside me and reaching for the silver wire.
"Wait! You'll cut your hand! Let me get some cloth to wrap your hand." I didn't want to expose my Mustard Seed Pendant in front of the Dragon Group, so I had to tear at my own clothes.
"Zheng Nan, watch out!" Suddenly, Sima Sanguang's loud voice came from below.
Before I could react, a tremendous force came from the side, and I was suddenly knocked away. As I fell, I saw Yang Zi smile lightly at me and shrug her shoulders. In the next moment, with a flash of white light, a dagger appeared in her hand. Without hesitation, she swung it towards Sima Sanguang's silver thread.
Damn, Yang Zi actually dared to ambush me!
The brown bear under the tree let out a roar, seemingly quite pleased with itself. Looking down, I saw its massive paws dancing in the air, ready to swat me down as soon as I fell.
As the bear's paw grew larger above me, Sima Sanguang let out a sound and swiftly grabbed my hand, growling, "Hold on to my hand and relax your body!"
I had no time to think and quickly grabbed Sima Sanguang's wrist. He grunted softly, twisted his waist, and with a flick of his arm, he flung me into the air. In that instant, I understood Sima Sanguang's intention; he wanted to throw me away so that I could escape the bear's attack range.
At that moment, Yang Zi also cut the silver thread in Sima Sanguang's hand. He immediately began to fall downwards, shouting, "Let go!"
It was clear that if I let go, inertia would send me flying to the side, thus escaping the threat of the bear's paw. However, Sima Sanguang had already used all his strength to throw me away; before landing, he wouldn't have the energy to dodge the bear's attack. In other words, he would be swatted by the bear while trying to save me.
Feeling a surge of warmth in my heart, I tightened my grip on Sima Sanguang's wrist and pulled hard. He was yanked off his original downward trajectory by a meter. At the same time, my outward momentum came to an abrupt halt, and we both fell straight down.
However, because of my pull, the bear's paw suddenly couldn't reach Sima Sanguang anymore. It paused for a moment before dropping onto all fours and turning to pounce at us.
