Zhong Kui's Diary
Generally speaking, when ruffians fight, it is not a matter of charging in to beat each other to death right away; rather, there is a basic routine. Both sides usually have seven or eight people. It starts with verbal exchanges: Party A says something like, "I’ll mess you up," and Party B immediately retaliates with, "I’ll mess you up too." As the argument escalates, the insults begin to target each other's immediate family members, with phrases like, "I’ll mess up your mother" and "I’ll mess up your sister."
As the insults continue, one side will inevitably find themselves at a disadvantage. For example, if Party A says something like, "I’ll mess up your entire family tree," and Party B struggles to come up with a suitable retort, they might angrily shout, "You dare say that again!" This phrase often serves as the trigger for physical confrontation.
If Party A feels confident about winning, they will not hesitate to insult again, leading to an immediate brawl. However, if Party A thinks Party B is also formidable, they might try to divert the conversation, resulting in a back-and-forth that ends with something like, "Oh, so your sister-in-law's aunt is my uncle's cousin? Misunderstanding! Let’s go have tea together..."
All of this boils down to one thing: the phrase "Bearded Security Guard" indicates that a fight is about to break out.
I shook my head with a smile and said, "Let’s skip the tough talk for now. I just want to know who you three are associated with."
The Bearded Security Guard patted his chest proudly and said, "Liu Yishou! Brother Liu! Ever heard of him? The Brilliant Nightclub is under Brother Liu's protection!"
"Liu Yishou? Brother Liu? I wonder if he knows Zeng Xian?" I asked casually.
"Zeng Xian? You know Brother Xian? Do you really know Brother Xian?" The Bearded Security Guard looked somewhat surprised.
After my earlier conflict with Curly-Haired Girl and Yellow-Haired Youth, I called Zeng Xian to ask about Liu Yishou. At that time, Zeng Xian casually mentioned that Liu Yishou was just a lackey of Ahao, responsible for guarding the Brilliant Nightclub. Ahao is Zeng Xian's top lackey; I had dealt with him twice during the Sha Zhiyuan company incident.
Amused by this revelation, I couldn't help but admire how strict the Mafia hierarchy was under Tang Zian. If we were to classify them by official ranks, Tang Zian would be the mayor, while Zeng Xian and his associates would be district heads. Below them would be Ahao and other bureau chiefs, followed by Liu Yishou and others in lower positions like Yellow-Haired Youth and the three Muscular Men before me.
My relationship with Zeng Xian was akin to that of ordinary staff members looking up at district heads; they were figures high above us whom we could only observe from a distance—unqualified even to share a meal together.
Feeling mischievous, I called Zeng Xian again. He found it amusing and asked me to pass the phone to the Bearded Security Guard. The Bearded Security Guard stammered in response and blushed as he returned the phone to me while pointing at Li Zan and saying, "You! You made me look bad! Just wait until I get back!"
After that, the Bearded Security Guard and his two companions ignored Li Zan and turned to leave. I glanced at the thin man and shouted at Li Zan, "Still remember what I said? If you keep bothering Xie Mengfei, I'll make sure you regret it."
"Go ahead and say it again," the thin man stepped forward. His confused eyes opened wide with intensity as he glared back at me.
"Who are you?" I asked, glancing sideways at the thin man.
"He is my friend's bodyguard." Li Zan snorted and sneered at me, "Do you think that just because you drove Brother Long and the others away, I would be afraid of you? I've been prepared for this; Rong Ge is sent by my friend to protect me."
A friend? More likely a wealthy woman, I thought, suppressing a laugh. It seemed this wealthy woman had sent her own bodyguard to protect Li Zan, which meant he must have charmed her quite well.
I turned to the thin man and smiled, "Rong Ge, shall we have a match?"
Rong Ge rolled his neck, producing a series of cracking sounds, and laughed, "A little sparring sounds good; I haven't had a workout in a while! Reminiscing about the past, I once sang, 'The spring water flows eastward, when will the songs and dances of West Lake cease?'"
Hearing Rong Ge's name made my heart skip a beat. I chuckled, "Indeed! Outside Suzhou City lies Hanshan Temple; across the river, they still sing 'The Flowers in the Rear Courtyard!'"
Rong Ge clasped his hands together and said, "So you're one of my kind!"
"This is my friend's room; I wouldn't want to make it a mess," I said, tilting my chin towards Xie Mengfei, who immediately smiled gratefully at me.
"Don't worry; I'll control my strength," Rong Ge said as he began to stretch his wrists and ankles, cracking sounds echoing.
"But I don't have much control. How about this? Let's compare a few skills; an expert can show their true ability right away. What do you say?" I laughed.
Rong Ge shrugged nonchalantly, "Sure, go ahead and draw the line."
I pulled out two coins and randomly picked one. With two fingers pressing hard, I bent the coin. This was a trick I often practiced and used to intimidate others; it never failed.
To my surprise, Rong Ge frowned slightly as he took the coin from me. With a grunt, he managed to bend it as well.
"Tsk tsk, it's a tie," I said with a grin.
Rong Ge nodded, and the look in his eyes was no longer indifferent but filled with a hint of respect, a respect for the strong, a mutual admiration, just as I looked at him.
Next, Rong Ge suggested an arm wrestling match, best two out of three. I won both rounds with my left hand, but he won two rounds with his right hand. This guy definitely had great strength in his right hand.
Then I proposed a standing long jump, and I won by two centimeters. Rong Ge then suggested a vertical jump, and he beat me by a finger's length...
Sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, squats—on these events we were evenly matched.
"It seems we can only resort to our final trump card!" I glared fiercely at Rong Ge.
"Bring it on, let's fight to the death!" Rong Ge gritted his teeth.
"Alright, let's see who can pee the farthest!" I declared decisively.
"Sure! And let's also see who can pee the highest!" Rong Ge's expression was fierce.
"Let's go!"
Just as Rong Ge and I were about to head to the restroom, Xie Mengfei stood in front of us with a frosty expression.
"What are you doing?" I asked in surprise.
"This is my restroom; you are not allowed to compete... in that regard!" Xie Mengfei said angrily.
Li Zan, who was watching in shock, shouted loudly, "Rong Ge, beat him up! You're so strong!"
Rong Ge turned his head and coldly looked at Li Zan, who immediately fell silent. Rong Ge then snorted, "I only promised someone to let you live until you go back; you don't have the right to boss me around."
"If I promise to spare his life, can you leave?" I laughed heartily.
"Sure!" Rong Ge turned and walked away, leaving Li Zan with a face full of terror.
Without hesitation, I rushed forward and gave Li Zan a thorough beating. After I had dealt with him, he left in tears, and before he left, I forced him to swear that he would never harass Xie Mengfei again. After closing the door, Xie Mengfei frowned and said, "Do you think his guarantee is reliable?"
"Don't worry. That Brother Long will definitely inform Liu Yishou about this. If Liu Yishou knows what he's doing, he will definitely kick Li Zan out of the Golden Splendor and spread the news. Li Zan won't be able to survive in Star City anymore." I said with a smile, "His wealthy patron won't dare to show up."
"I didn't expect you to be a Mafia," Xie Mengfei said with a half-smile as she looked at me.
"I just happen to know their boss," I replied with a grin. "Rest assured, Li Zan will not harass you again."
"That's good," Xie Mengfei sighed in relief, then looked at me suspiciously. "What do you mean by your relationship with Rong Ge? Honestly, I've never seen such a bizarre way of fighting."
"Cut it out, girl. Some things are better left unasked. I'm going to sleep now," I waved my hand casually.
After Xie Mengfei entered her room, I lay back on the sofa with my head resting on my hands, recalling what Rong Ge had said to me earlier.
Rong Ge was none other than Gugu.
I hadn't recognized her at first until she spoke that coded phrase: 'A river flows eastward; when will the songs and dances of West Lake cease?' That's when I realized she was Gugu... Ever since the Fortune God Incident, I had agreed on codes with those Grandmaster-level experts mainly to prevent incidents where a Cursed God pretends to be a Fortune God.
Gugu contacted me without calling ahead; instead, she used this roundabout method to reach me. While we were arm wrestling and competing in various ways, she briefly told me a few things.
During the arm wrestling match, she informed me that someone had placed a Restriction on her, causing her magical power to nearly vanish.
While doing the standing long jump, she told me that she was being hunted down, and what surprised me the most was that she didn't even know who was after her.
While doing pull-ups, she told me that she was.
...
For a moment, I was at a loss. The old man was actually looking for Gugu? What could be the reason for the old man's relentless pursuit of Gugu? And why did he choose to search for Gugu through matchmaking?
It seemed that Gugu was also avoiding something; she hadn't shared much with me and didn't even arrange when we would meet next, which surprised me. At that time, there were only four people in the room: besides me and Gugu, the other two were Li Zan and Xie Mengfei. Gugu was vague; who was she on guard against? Li Zan or Xie Mengfei?
In my confusion, I unexpectedly fell asleep on the sofa.
When I woke up, it was already late morning. I sat up from the sofa, rubbed my sore neck, moved my arms a bit, and then stood up, stretching lazily. I glanced towards Xie Mengfei's bedroom; the door was wide open, and the blanket inside was piled high, as if she were still sound asleep.
I called out a couple of times, but no one responded. After washing up, I called again, but still received no answer. Feeling something was off, I walked into the bedroom and patted the bulging blanket: "Get up..."
Just as I uttered a word, I suddenly stopped. I quickly pulled back the blanket and found a fluffy teddy bear inside; Xie Mengfei was nowhere to be seen.
Damn, where did Xie Mengfei go?
