Zhong Kui's Diary
Could it really be that Zhao Bingbing didn't make the call? I scratched my head, momentarily at a loss.
“Mr. Zhong, just find whoever called you, I can testify that this has nothing to do with our sister. Now please leave, or I will... call the police!” Sister Sun had no way to deal with me and even resorted to threatening to call the police.
Find whoever made the call? Hearing Sister Sun say that sparked an idea in my mind. I found Zhao Bingbing's number in my call log and redialed it, pressing the speakerphone button. To my surprise, the voice on the other end said, “Sorry, the number you dialed is currently turned off...” Upon hearing this, Zhao Bingbing raised her chin and held her phone up in front of me: “Look closely, my phone is perfectly fine and not turned off.”
With a cold laugh, Zhao Bingbing decided to call me instead. My phone rang, and this time it was the ringtone for my friends group. Looking closely, I noticed that this number seemed slightly different from the one I had just received.
After hanging up, I checked the previous number and asked Zhao Bingbing, “Are you sure this number is yours?”
“Of course,” Zhao Bingbing glanced at it: “18-56, that's correct.”
Suddenly, Sister Sun interjected: “Sister Zhao, your number is 18-65; this number isn't yours.”
Zhao Bingbing was taken aback by this and looked again, exclaiming: “Right, right! I have 56 in the middle; this one has 65. At first glance, it does look like my number.”
Damn, who saved this number on my phone and then mimicked Zhao Bingbing's voice to call me? What could their intention be? Could it be a diversion? With that thought, my unease grew stronger, and I quickly dialed Xie Mengfei.
The phone rang ten times without anyone picking up. I cursed under my breath—could it be that I had really fallen for a diversion tactic? In a fit of anger and panic, I turned and ran. Damn it, would I make it back in time?
Cursed traffic! The taxi got stuck several hundred meters from where Xie Mengfei lived due to what seemed like an accident ahead. The driver leaned out to take a look and picked up his radio to ask his colleague about the situation; apparently, a Benz had flipped over an old man.
“Damn, that Benz is probably going to go bankrupt,” the taxi driver said with a smirk.
I didn’t respond but leaned out of the window to see if there was any sign of movement in the traffic. Cursing under my breath, I pulled out some cash for the driver and jumped out of the car.
“Hey! Change!” came the driver's shout from behind.
Ignoring him, I sprinted forward. As I passed by a crowd gathered to watch the commotion ahead, I couldn’t help but glance over. To my surprise, I spotted someone familiar—well, more like a familiar ghost—one of the Grandmaster-level Experts, Yun Zhihan.
Yun Zhihan seemed to notice me as well; he gave me a strange smile and gestured toward the accident scene as if something there piqued his interest.
In that moment, I almost wanted to stop and rush into the crowd to see what had happened at the accident scene that could have alarmed someone like Yun Zhihan, a Grandmaster Level Demon. But then I remembered that Xie Mengfei still didn't know what was going on, and I didn't want to complicate things further.
I nodded slightly at Yun Zhihan and continued to sprint forward without any hesitation.
What puzzled me even more was that I actually saw Ji Wuyuan and Qu Wubing, both of whom were heading towards the accident scene and greeted me with strange smiles.
What the hell is going on?
I gritted my teeth, suppressing my curiosity, and ran all the way to Xie Mengfei's front door. The door looked normal, and I felt a slight sense of relief. Then I thought that old man might not need to break in after all, but my heart tightened again. I took out my key and opened the door.
I slipped inside and closed the door behind me. The living room showed no signs of anything unusual; instead, the glass sliding door of the bathroom was tightly shut, and I could hear a splashing sound coming from inside, as if someone was showering.
"Xie Mengfei?" I called out loudly as I approached the bathroom door.
There was no response from inside, just the sound of water from the shower.
"Xie Mengfei, if you don't answer me, I'm coming in!" I pushed against the glass door, which wasn't locked.
Still no response.
I felt a sense of dread wash over me. Chanting a spell in my mind, I pulled the door open with force and quickly stepped inside.
There was no one inside; only the shower was spraying a dense stream of water. Other than that, everything seemed normal, as if someone had just finished showering but forgotten to turn off the faucet before leaving.
Scratching my head, I was about to turn around and leave when I suddenly caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye—something seemed to dart past in the bathroom. Startled, I stopped and looked around, finally fixing my gaze on the mirror above the bathroom sink.
In the mirror, my reflection looked confused, staring blankly back at me.
Maybe I'm seeing things, I thought with a bitter smile as I prepared to step out of the bathroom. Just as I lifted my foot to leave, a chill ran down my spine because I noticed that the person in the mirror wasn't moving in sync with me.
While I had already stepped outside, the shadow in the mirror remained still, staring at me. Even more chilling was that my reflection had an eerie smile creeping at the corners of its mouth.
"Damn!" I instinctively raised my hand, and a bolt of lightning struck down.
The mirror shattered into pieces from the lightning strike. With a clattering sound, the fragments fell to the ground, breaking into even smaller shards. Peering closer, I saw that each piece reflected a grinning version of myself, seemingly mocking my ignorance. In the distance, I faintly heard a sinister laughter echoing in the air.
"Who?" I shouted sharply.
"Hehehe!" The voice grew clearer, and a wisp of faint black mist began to rise from the ground. In an instant, the mist took shape, transforming into various bizarre forms in the air.
"Damn!" Without hesitation, I unleashed another bolt of lightning, which struck the black mist directly. The silver-white lightning emitted a blinding light, and with a loud bang, the mist dissipated.
Once the mist cleared, everything seemed to return to normal. The grinning reflections of myself in the mirror shards vanished without a trace, as if I had merely imagined them when I broke the mirror.
"Damn! If you have guts, come out and face me instead of lurking around!" I shouted loudly.
There was no response from the bathroom. After calling out a few more times and frowning, I stepped back out of the bathroom.
"Clang!" Just as I exited, a sound came from outside; it seemed something had shattered. The noise appeared to be coming from the bedroom.
My muscles tensed up as I rushed into the bedroom. There lay Xie Mengfei, completely naked on the bed, her eyes staring blankly like dead fish as she gazed at the Flower Board. Her hand hung limply beside the bedside table, and there were ceramic shards scattered all over the floor. It appeared that she had knocked over a Craft Table Lamp that was on the bedside table—clearly, she had used her last bit of strength to do so in an attempt to get my attention.
"Mengfei!" I rushed forward and hugged her tightly, checking for signs of life by feeling her breath; she still seemed to have some warmth. I quickly dialed Lingfeng's number to have him send someone over immediately.
"Mengfei! Wake up!" After hanging up the phone, I shouted loudly near Xie Mengfei's ear.
Her face was an unusual pale gray. It seemed she heard my shout; her lips trembled as she murmured, "Zheng Nan..." Before she could finish her sentence, her almost lifeless eyes slowly closed. A tear rolled down from the corner of her eye.
"Damn it, don't close your eyes!" I shook Xie Mengfei's body vigorously.
As I shook her like this, her eyelashes fluttered a few times; her eyeballs beneath her eyelids seemed to be moving slightly as if she wanted to open her eyes but lacked the strength to do so.
At this moment, I couldn't let her fall asleep. I shook Xie Mengfei again, but this time it seemed less effective; her eyelashes trembled less frequently until they finally stopped altogether.
"Damn, I hope I didn't shake her to death!" I exclaimed in shock, hurriedly laying her flat on the bed. I pinched her philtrum and began administering artificial respiration.
After my actions, Xie Mengfei's eyelashes started to tremble again, and her eyes moved more than before. Seeing that it was effective, I quickly continued the steps of artificial respiration: first mouth-to-mouth, then compressing her chest, followed by mouth-to-mouth again...
Just as I was busy with this, a furious shout came from the doorway: "You beast!" With that shout, a figure rushed in wielding a glue stick and swung it at my head.
"Damn it, I'm busy here! Why are you causing trouble?" I instinctively grabbed the glue stick and pulled hard. The figure lost balance and lunged toward me.
Releasing the glue stick, I seized the person's throat and shouted, "Who the hell are you?"
The person was pinned against the headboard, their face turning a deep shade of purple as they struggled with their legs and clawed at my fingers while gasping, "I... I'm the security guard for this building!"
I finally took a good look at him; indeed, he was in a security uniform with a walkie-talkie clipped to his shoulder. Realizing he was indeed security, I released my grip on his throat and pushed him away angrily. "Can't you see I'm saving someone? Why did you jump to conclusions?"
"I was patrolling when I saw this room's door open. When I came in, I saw you kissing and touching this lady. How was I supposed to know you were trying to save her? I thought you were a pervert," the security guard said with a distressed expression.
That made sense; anyone would think that if they saw a man kissing and touching a naked woman, it couldn't possibly be an act of saving her. I sighed and waved my hand. "You go outside and stand by the door. Don't let anyone else in. The police will be here soon. You'll find out whether I'm a good or bad guy then."
The security guard paused for a moment but said nothing and turned to leave.
