Zhong Kui's Diary
"Hey, what's your name?" I shouted as the security guard was leaving.
"Ouyang Tao!" the guard replied loudly from outside. "Do you need anything else?"
"No, just wait at the door for the police to arrive," I said, not bothering to ask anything more, as the commotion had left Xie Mengfei completely still in my arms.
This time, no matter how I performed Artificial Respiration, Xie Mengfei showed no response. As time passed, her body gradually grew colder. By the time Lingfeng arrived with his team, Xie Mengfei was already ice-cold.
Along with Lingfeng came two police officers and two doctors—one male and one female officer, and one middle-aged and one young doctor. The Middle-Aged Doctor checked Xie Mengfei's breath and looked into her eyes, shaking his head at Lingfeng: "She's already dead!"
"Damn it, if she's dead, then take her to the hospital for resuscitation!" I couldn't help but shout in anger.
The Young Doctor glanced at me, seemingly confused about who I was and why I was so furious. Lingfeng quickly waved his hand at him: "Take this woman back immediately and do everything you can to save her. Contact me first thing if anything happens."
The Middle-Aged Doctor exchanged glances with the Young Doctor, and they brought a stretcher from outside to place Xie Mengfei on it. Just as they were moving her body, the Young Doctor let out a soft gasp.
"What is it?" Lingfeng asked.
"Look at her leg," the Young Doctor pointed at Xie Mengfei's left leg, his voice filled with surprise.
Following his gesture, we all turned to look, and we couldn't help but gasp in shock.
On Xie Mengfei's leg was a silver-gray skull. Because the color of the skull closely matched Xie Mengfei's skin tone under the light, I hadn't noticed it while I was focused on saving her. But now that the Young Doctor pointed it out, I looked closely and saw that the skull seemed almost alive, its two rows of teeth slowly opening and closing.
"What is this?" the female officer exclaimed softly, her voice trembling slightly.
I frowned deeply, gritted my teeth, and reached out toward the silver-gray skull.
“Zheng Nan, what are you doing?” Lingfeng pulled me back sharply and said sternly.
“I’m just checking what this is!” I replied forcefully.
“Are you crazy? This could be a virus!” Lingfeng shouted at me in anger.
“Don’t pull me,” I raised an eyebrow. “Do you not know who I am?”
Lingfeng paused for a moment, then sighed and let go of my hand, seemingly remembering that I was one of the Top Masters in the realm, and ordinary spirits and monsters were no match for me.
In that brief delay, the others gasped in surprise. When they looked over, they found that the skull on Xie Mengfei's leg had vanished without a trace.
“Where did it go?” I asked urgently.
The Middle-Aged Doctor swallowed hard and said awkwardly, “It just wobbled a bit and then disappeared, as if it… melted away!”
“I think it burrowed in,” the female officer said hesitantly.
“It didn’t burrow in; it clearly flew away,” another Male Officer countered.
“You’re all wrong; it was clearly invisible!” the Young Doctor quickly chimed in.
…
Aside from me and Lingfeng, who were too busy arguing to notice, all four of them had seen the skull disappear and each had their own perspective. Everyone believed they were right, even though they were all trembling with fear at this phenomenon. However, that didn’t stop them from arguing fiercely… The only point on which everyone agreed was that there had indeed been a skull on Xie Mengfei's leg earlier, and now it was undeniably gone.
After listening to their debate for a few moments, Lingfeng quickly waved his hand for them to carry Xie Mengfei's body out.
Damn! Could it be that Xie Mengfei was killed by this skull? A thought suddenly flashed through my mind, and then it spread like a wild weed, filling my head completely. In an instant, all I could think about was this idea, and a faint sense of guilt slowly rose within me. If I had discovered this skull earlier, would Xie Mengfei still be alive?
In fact, I had known she was dead the moment Xie Mengfei's body turned cold. My roar at the two doctors was merely a release of my frustration at being powerless to stop Xie Mengfei from dying right before my eyes.
"What's wrong? Zheng Nan," Lingfeng looked at me in surprise. "You look terrible. What happened?"
I lit a cigarette and took a couple of deep puffs before telling Lingfeng about the situation. Lingfeng frowned, "It seems this guy has pulled a trick to lure us away."
After a pause, Lingfeng continued, "By the way, how did an extra number appear in your phone? This is too bizarre. If someone accessed your phone, you wouldn't have been unaware of it."
"It's just like that; nowadays, phone data can sync with computers. The other party first accesses your account on their computer, edits a phone number, saves it to your contacts, and then sends a command to your phone asking if you want to update your contacts. As long as you confirm it, the new number gets saved in your phone." I was somewhat familiar with this trick because I had used it when messing around with Fatty. Of course, this method requires a computer expert to cooperate.
Lingfeng shook his head with a wry smile and sighed, "The more advanced technology becomes, the more sophisticated criminal methods get. No matter who it is, everyone is keeping up with the times."
"By the way, I'll go ask the security guard at the entrance if he heard anything unusual while patrolling." I called for Lingfeng to come with me.
"The security guard at the entrance? There wasn't one when we arrived," Lingfeng said in surprise.
"Wasn't there?" I walked to the entrance and saw that aside from the Male Police Officer and the female officer who came with Lingfeng, there was no one else on the floor. The two doctors had already taken Xie Mengfei's body downstairs. Behind the Security Door of the adjacent room, someone was peeking out, probably a curious neighbor wanting to know what was happening.
"This guy, I clearly told him to guard the door for me." I rubbed my nose in frustration. "Now where am I supposed to find him?"
"Finding him isn't difficult," Lingfeng chuckled. He walked over to the elevator's directory where there was a property management phone number. After making a call and saying a few words, he hung up. Seven or eight minutes later, a disheveled Middle-Aged Security Guard rushed out of the elevator holding a folder and a walkie-talkie, panting heavily.
The Middle-Aged Security Guard looked at our group of four and then nodded at me and Lingfeng, smiling as he asked, "Excuse me, which one of you is Ling Ju?"
Among us were only two people in police uniforms, but their shoulder insignias indicated they were only at the rank of inspector. The Male Police Officer had three stars while the female officer had two stars. However, for Star City, the position of Police Chief should have at least one flower and one star; that is to say, they should be at least an inspector to hold such a position. Nevertheless, the tone of the Middle-Aged Security Guard was filled with doubt; he probably didn't believe that one of these two young people could be the Police Chief.
Lingfeng smiled lightly and took out his work ID to show it to the Middle-Aged Security Guard. After a few seconds, he slowly put it away and said, "I am Lingfeng."
"Hello, Ling Ju!" The Middle-Aged Security Guard greeted with a smile. "I am Ouyang Tao, the Security Supervisor at Hua Nian Properties."
Ouyang Tao? I was taken aback for a moment, then realized it might just be a coincidence of names.
Lingfeng didn't waste time and directly asked, "How many security guards do you have here?"
"Eighteen!" Ouyang Tao answered without hesitation.
"Besides you, is there anyone else named Ouyang Tao?" I cleared my throat and inquired.
"No, I'm the only one with the surname Ouyang here," Ouyang Tao scratched his head. "In fact, there are no homeowners with the surname Ouyang in the entire building."
Ouyang Tao's response struck me as strange. Did I mishear earlier, or was that person intentionally using a false name?
Lingfeng reached out to Ouyang Tao and said, "Please provide us with the security personnel information you prepared."
Ouyang Tao quickly handed over the folder he was holding to Lingfeng, who then passed it directly to me since I was the only one who had seen that security guard's face.
I flipped through the pages of the folder until I reached the end but found no information about the guard I had seen. Closing the folder, I shook my head at Lingfeng, indicating that there was no data on that guard inside.
"Is this everything?" Lingfeng frowned and asked Ouyang Tao.
"This is all of it!" Ouyang Tao replied firmly.
"This is strange. It can't be! He was clearly wearing your uniform and even had a walkie-talkie!" I frowned as I recounted the situation regarding the security guard to Ouyang Tao.
"How about we check the surveillance footage?" Ouyang Tao pondered for a moment before speaking.
"Sure, that works!" Lingfeng nodded.
"Surveillance room, surveillance room, this is Ouyang Tao. Prepare to pull up the surveillance footage from the 19th floor of the East Building," Ouyang Tao shouted into the intercom before signaling us to head downstairs.
Leaving the two police officers to investigate the scene, Lingfeng and I followed Ouyang Tao to the surveillance room located in the underground garage. Inside, two security guards were sitting and smoking.
Upon seeing Ouyang Tao enter, they quickly stood up. One young guard with a face full of acne even pulled out a pack of soft China cigarettes and eagerly handed one to Ouyang Tao. After hesitating for a moment, he offered one to each of us as well.
It was clear that this pack of cigarettes was meant to curry favor with his superior, as I noticed that the ashtray on the table was filled with blue filter tips. I was quite familiar with these filter tips; they belonged to Azure White Sand, which cost ten yuan a pack. I had smoked these for a while.
After flattering Ouyang Tao a couple of times, the acne-faced guard managed to pull up the surveillance footage from Xie Mengfei's floor. When I saw the footage, I couldn't help but exclaim softly because I realized that after I entered the room, I had indeed closed the door behind me. If I had closed the door, how did that security guard get in? Did he have a key?
Then the footage flickered for a moment, and a security guard appeared from the emergency exit. Upon seeing this guard, everyone couldn't help but gasp because his face was completely blurred on the camera.
Lingfeng and I exchanged glances and read two words in each other's eyes—Blindness.
Only this upgraded version of Blindness could prevent one's face from being captured by surveillance cameras.
