"Throw the suitcase in!" Mr. Qian said coldly.
I didn't hesitate and directly tossed the suitcase into the sewer. Soon, a light sound came from below; it was the sound of the suitcase hitting the ground. Peering into the sewer, I saw that the Safe was quietly lying on the side of the walkway under the dim lights. I vaguely felt something was off but couldn't pinpoint what it was.
After about a minute, I thought Mr. Qian had left the phone, so I called out, and Mr. Qian chuckled softly, "Alright, now you two climb down and find the suitcase, then keep moving forward."
Hmm, this request seemed a bit strange. At this point, there should be someone waiting in the sewer to grab the money and run away, then find an exit to escape without anyone noticing. But Mr. Qian wanted us to continue carrying the ransom money forward; that made no sense at all.
"Hurry up, or I'll detonate the bomb!" Mr. Qian threatened softly.
I looked up at the Timed Bomb; there were still 4 seconds left: "What about Zhang Hao and this bomb?"
"You two take the bomb down with you; let Zhang Hao go home," Mr. Qian paused and continued to chuckle softly, "Zheng Nan, doesn't the Timed Bomb still have 6 seconds left? A word of advice: don't try anything funny because I can see you right now." Mr. Qian chuckled twice and hung up.
Since Mr. Qian could see the time on the Timed Bomb, he could naturally see our movements as well. The thought of running out with Zhang Hao was instantly dismissed. I exchanged a glance with Kong Xuan and quickly untied the Rope from Zhang Hao without removing the tape from his mouth, urgently saying, "Once we get outside, run across the street; someone will come to rescue you!"
This wasn't just to comfort him; I had a tracker on me, and there were at least five or six plainclothes police officers following us.
Zhang Hao nodded and slipped out of the car door, frantically rushing across the street where a SF Express vehicle was parked. The door opened, and a delivery person wearing a hard hat and work uniform quickly approached Zhang Hao.
Knowing that Zhang Hao was safe, I turned my attention to the Timed Bomb, which now showed only 46 seconds left. With a grunt, I hugged the bomb and swiftly dove into the sewer, climbing down along the iron railing beside me.
I had seen pictures of sewers on Star City Forum before; they didn't seem impressive at that time. Now that I was here in person, it felt much more spacious than in those pictures. The entire passage formed an inverted 'U' shape with a bottom diameter of about ten meters and a height of seven or eight meters. On our side was nearly a two-meter-wide walkway; as I said before, filming an action scene from a Hollywood cop-and-robber movie here would be completely feasible.
Kong Xuan climbed down with me and, seeing that I was still holding the bomb, frowned and said, "You idiot, are you really going to hold onto that bomb? Hurry up and throw it away."
I was startled by his words. "Are you crazy? Mr. Qian will detonate it if he finds out."
Kong Xuan snorted, "If we were above ground, he could install a camera in the car, but now that we're in the sewer, how can he see us? If you're going to keep holding that bomb, stay the hell away from me."
Thinking about it, I quickly tossed the bomb into the sewage below and grabbed the Safe at my feet, hurrying forward.
"Why does he still want us to carry the ransom at a time like this?" I asked Kong Xuan.
We both unconsciously quickened our pace, our footsteps and voices echoing in the empty sewer.
"Who knows!" Kong Xuan frowned. "That guy is just a weirdo!"
"Is this bomb going to explode?" I asked Kong Xuan uncertainly.
"I have no idea. We should just run," Kong Xuan replied, taking a sharp breath. We exchanged glances and took off running.
Just as we had run about two hundred meters, a massive explosion sounded behind us, followed by a deafening collapse. Looking back, the place where we had just come down was already caved in from the blast, and we could even see light from outside. It seemed that the street had been blown into a Big Pit, demonstrating just how powerful that bomb was.
"What the hell! What does that guy mean by this?" I exclaimed in shock and anger.
Does he want to kill us? Each time those bombs exploded, death nearly brushed past us. If he wanted us dead, he could have just detonated the bomb remotely; why go through all this trouble?
"Damn!" Kong Xuan cursed as well. "That guy is a lunatic!"
The two of them stood frozen in place, still shaken, unsure of what to do next. After a while, I sighed and said, "Since it's come to this, we might as well keep moving forward."
Kong Xuan nodded, and the two of us walked silently ahead. After about ten minutes, Mr. Qian still hadn't called. Did he think we had been blown up?
The hollow footsteps echoed eerily in the sewer, and I didn't like that feeling. I cleared my throat and said, "Kong Xuan, is it possible to cast a spell on these banknotes that works like a tracker? That way, if Mr. Qian gets the money, we can locate him and catch him."
"Of course!" Kong Xuan raised an eyebrow dismissively. "For instance, my Phantom Mosquito can track the money's whereabouts."
"Why didn't you say so earlier?" I was instantly furious. With that spell, why did I have to risk my life running around like an idiot? I could just cast a spell and follow the trail to catch Mr. Qian.
"Hey, you never asked!" Kong Xuan retorted angrily. "I know so many spells; do you expect me to report each one to you?"
"Did you not hear me when I called Jiang Ziyu the night of the first explosion? I wanted him to track the money's whereabouts; you were right there!" I pointed at Kong Xuan in frustration. Then I quickly retracted my finger because I remembered that I had called Jiang Ziyu secretly.
It was just my pride at the time; I was afraid someone would overhear me calling Jiang Ziyu. After Jiang Ziyu rejected me, a sense of inertia took over my mind, leading me to subconsciously believe that this path was no longer viable, completely overlooking that Kong Xuan and others were also Master-Level experts.
"Let's not dwell on the past." Clearing my throat, I stopped and placed the safe on the ground. "Now go ahead and cast a spell on these banknotes."
I quickly opened the box, but what lay before us left us dumbfounded.
The one hundred ten bundles of cash inside had turned into one hundred ten bundles of blank paper.
How could the money turn into blank paper? Where did the one hundred ten thousand go?
After a moment of shock, I finally asked hesitantly, "Kong Xuan, does Taoism have a spell that turns money into blank paper?"
Kong Xuan looked at me with a mix of laughter and tears, saying, "What you did was just a magic trick; our Daoist arts are not that trivial."
"Then what is going on? The suitcase has been in our hands the whole time, how could the money turn into blank paper?" I said sternly.
"If you ask me, who should I ask?" To my surprise, Kong Xuan's voice was even louder than mine.
"Are you the leader of the Southern School of Confucius? How can you not know this?" I scoffed loudly.
"You claim to be a Grandmaster-level Expert, yet you don't know anything either," Kong Xuan retorted.
Our argument echoed loudly through the entire sewer, creating a constant buzzing sound.
"Forget it, I'm not arguing with you!" I said, feeling somewhat deflated as I made a gesture to pause. "Let's analyze how this money was swapped."
Hearing this, Kong Xuan took a deep breath and scratched his head. "Could it have happened in the internet café?"
"That's impossible; we were at Civic Center Square and followed Mr. Qian's instructions to open the suitcase and take photos. The money was still there at that time," I shook my head in denial.
"Then it must have been on the business vehicle?" Kong Xuan frowned. "When you untied Zhang Hao, neither of us was paying attention to the suitcase."
I thought for a moment and shook my head again. "That shouldn't be possible either; besides Zhang Hao, who was tied up, there was no one else in the business vehicle. Even if we weren't paying attention to the Safe, it was still within our line of sight. If someone could swap the money right under our noses, that would be Fang Ye Tan."
Kong Xuan continued to frown. "That's strange; even if we entered the sewer, the Safe never left our sight. I don't believe anyone could change those items into blank paper from a distance."
"Not even a Grandmaster-level Demon could do that?" I rubbed my temples; damn, this problem was quite puzzling.
"Anyway, we Master-Level are out of our depth." Kong Xuan shook his head, "Even if it's Grandmaster Level, I don't think they would do this because it consumes too much magical power. If Ji Wuyuan and the others could exchange the money here for white paper, then the magical power he lost would definitely not be recoverable with one hundred and ten thousand."
Clearing his throat, Kong Xuan continued, "To put it another way, it's like using a pump to drain an entire pond just to catch one fish... it's simply not worth it."
Hearing Kong Xuan say this made my head ache. I closed the Safe and continued to massage my temples. Damn, when exactly did Mr. Qian swap the money in the box?
"Eh?" Kong Xuan seemed to notice something was off.
"What’s wrong?" I asked, somewhat surprised.
"Zheng Nan, what brand is this Safe?" Kong Xuan frowned and asked.
"It's LV!" I casually pointed to the logo on the Safe: "Look, this logo..."
I stopped mid-sentence because the logo I was pointing at was not LV's logo but rather a 'lu' design. It was clearly a counterfeit brand; although the arrangement resembled LV, a closer look revealed the difference between 'u' and 'v'.
What is going on? How did LV turn into lu? Could it be that the entire box has been swapped?
