Zhong Kui's Diary
“Calm down, I’m just an ordinary person, far from being insane,” Mr. Qian said with a click of his tongue. “Insane? Can I be as insane as the teachers in school? They skip the key points that should be taught in class and instead teach them after class under the guise of tutoring. Only students who pay a high price for extra lessons can learn what they should have learned in class. Hmph, let me pass on the term 'insane' to those teachers.”
I was taken aback for a moment, then angrily replied, “Not all teachers are like that! Besides, what’s wrong with the kids?”
“The kids are innocent. When have they ever done anything wrong?” Mr. Qian said in surprise.
“Then why did you place a bomb in the school? Why use the children as hostages?” I demanded sternly.
“Because the teachers are so terrible. If I only kidnapped a group of teachers, you probably wouldn’t care about it at all. You might even secretly think, ‘Let it explode, out with the old and in with the new,’” Mr. Qian laughed coldly. “Have you ever seen a bad person use another bad person as a hostage? It’s only effective to use innocent good people as hostages. What’s wrong? Are you unconvinced? Then come and bite me.”
With that, Mr. Qian burst into wild laughter.
I took several deep breaths to control my impulse to throw my phone. If I ever caught Mr. Qian, I would definitely flay him alive; nothing else could quell my hatred.
“So what do you want?” I asked slowly.
“Since you’re still alive, let’s continue playing this game. You need to go to the school and find this office,” Mr. Qian sneered. “Oh, by the way, I almost forgot something important: if the principals give the order to open all unused offices, it would be obvious which school I placed the bomb in, right? No, I need to add that unless you personally lead people to break down the door, anyone else who enters those rooms will trigger the bomb. You better hurry and inform the Star City Public Security Bureau; don’t forget this.”
“I will inform them!” I gritted my teeth and said. “But there are hundreds of schools in Star City; how am I supposed to know which one has the bomb? If I have to search each one, I won’t finish even by next year.”
“Don’t get worked up; I’ll give you a hint!” Mr. Qian chuckled.
“What hint?” I asked urgently.
There was silence on the other end for a moment before Mr. Qian said, “Xunyang River at Night Sending Off Guests, Maple Leaves and Reed Flowers in Autumn Rustling.”
“And then?” I asked in confusion.
“There’s no ‘and then.’ You go figure it out,” Mr. Qian laughed heartily before hanging up the phone.
I wasn't in a hurry to think about this riddle; instead, I spoke to Lou Wei on the phone, saying, "You heard what was just said. This is the current situation."
Lou Wei seemed puzzled: "Isn't it better for you to contact Lingfeng about this?"
"Don't you know that Lingfeng has been suspended? Now it's the Executive Deputy Director Wan Dahai who is in charge." I said loudly, "You should know what kind of person Wan Dahai is related to the Liu Family. The only one who can influence him in Star City is probably you."
Lou Wei didn't refuse: "Alright, I'll take care of contacting Wan Dahai." With that, he hung up.
I looked at Kong Xuan, who had already ended his call and shrugged at me: "Lingfeng is contacting his grandfather to see if he can help."
Since Lingfeng became the director, the former Political and Legal Affairs Committee Secretary Jiang Haoyu had been transferred to another city. I really couldn't think of anyone from the nearly defeated Ling Family in Star City who could offer assistance.
While we were on the phone, the number of replies under the post had already reached hundreds. Seeing this number, I had lost all hope of locking the thread. Even if it were locked now, what difference would it make? As long as these hundreds of people shared it with their friends and family, and then their friends and family had their own circles, this news would spread throughout Star City in no time.
Most importantly, news spreads exceptionally fast now—through phones, mobile devices, text messages, Weibo, WeChat—all capable of disseminating information instantly.
Star City was about to descend into chaos!
The more anxious I became, the less I could calm my mind. What did ‘Xunyang River at Night Sending Off Guests, Maple Leaves and Reed Flowers in Autumn Rustling’ really mean? What was the answer?
Both Kong Xuan and Leizu Wu were frowning in thought as well. None of us knew how long we had been pondering when I vaguely heard sharp police sirens outside. Damn it, could chaos be happening so soon?
"Let's go check it out!" I exchanged glances with Kong Xuan, and we turned to head outside.
I heard Leizu Wu calling out behind us: "Please take care of my Yu!"
"Do our best and leave the rest to fate!" I replied as I stepped out.
Just as we exited the area, we saw various vehicles rushing out like madmen. The sound of horns blared from the District Entrance. Our off-road vehicle was blocked before we even reached the gate; dozens of cars were jammed tightly at the district entrance, all honking wildly. In an instant, the noise echoed throughout the area.
Kong Xuan had already returned to her original appearance. She got out of the car, walked to the front, and called me to get out: "No need to stay in the car, let's walk. The streets are all jammed with cars!"
Hearing this, I got out of the car and stepped onto the street, where various vehicles were congested on the road. Climbing onto a trash can to look towards the intersection, I saw several cars tangled in the middle. Clearly, they were all trying to rush through the intersection but ended up colliding in the center. The cars behind them squeezed forward whenever there was a gap, resulting in a complete standstill.
Soon, some impatient drivers simply got out of their cars and ran ahead, leaving their vehicles in the middle of the road without a care. In such a situation, even if ten traffic police officers showed up, it would be useless. Moreover, if the entire Star City was in this condition, there wouldn't be enough traffic police to handle it.
I jumped down and exchanged a glance with Kong Xuan; both of us were filled with a sense of dread. The current situation made Star City feel like a pot of boiling oil—just a drop of water could cause an explosion. From what I could see on-site, that pot of oil was already starting to boil.
"Get out of the way, damn it! My kid is in danger!" A middle-aged man with a big belly climbed out of a BMW and started cursing loudly. It was evident that he was a successful businessman.
"Hey! Just because you have kids doesn't mean I don't!" A woman wearing glasses got out of an Audi and shouted at the BMW driver; she looked somewhat like a civil servant.
"Damn! Move aside! It's you drivers who are blocking traffic! Let my electric vehicle through!" A bearded middle-aged man rode his electric vehicle through the gaps between cars.
"Hey! I'll buy your electric vehicle! I'll give you five thousand!" The BMW man pulled out his wallet and waved it in front of the electric vehicle rider.
"I'll offer ten thousand!" The Audi woman saw this as a good idea too; she bent down and took out her handbag from the car, shouting loudly.
"Get lost! I won't sell it for any amount! I'm in a hurry to pick up my kid. If you want an electric vehicle, there's a shop selling them right over there," the electric vehicle rider pointed to a store by the roadside.
The BMW man and Audi woman exchanged glances and immediately ran toward that shop, fearing that if they were late, there would be no electric vehicles left for sale. Other drivers who overheard their conversation also rushed toward the electric vehicle shop, while more people began shouting and honking their horns. In no time, the street was filled with an overwhelming cacophony of horns.
"What are we going to do?" Kong Xuan asked me in shock.
I couldn't think of any way to alleviate this frenzied atmosphere. At this rate, chaos could erupt at any moment. After a while, I murmured, "I wonder if Lou Wei has contacted Wan Dahai yet; at this point, we might have to deploy troops."
"The troops might not even be effective. These citizens are not rioters; they are law-abiding taxpayers who know they are in the right. Even if there are soldiers ahead, they would dare to confront them. In this situation, the military cannot open fire; how can an army that dares not shoot have any deterrent effect?" Kong Xuan frowned.
I found it hard to believe Kong Xuan's words—armed soldiers unable to exert deterrence? Who were they trying to fool?
As the horn blared more urgently and the driver began to grow increasingly anxious, a group of green figures rushed to the intersection ahead—these were the armed police. Upon seeing them, I couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, as if their presence would resolve everything.
Following closely behind the armed police were regular officers, including traffic police, civil police, and even Auxiliary Police. Their roles were clearly defined: three armed police officers for each street, accompanied by one traffic officer and one civil officer, along with two Auxiliary Police.
With these personnel present, things should stabilize, I thought to myself as I signaled Kong Xuan to walk toward the intersection. I was quite dismissive of Kong Xuan's earlier comments; with so many armed police around, how could the public still act out?
However, what happened next was beyond my understanding. The arrival of the armed police and traffic officers only seemed to escalate tensions. The drivers stuck in traffic surged forward toward the police, shouting and even hurling insults.
"Quickly restore traffic! I need to get to school! There's a bomb at my child's school..." This was relatively reasonable.
"Damn it, I pay taxes to support you useless people! There's someone planting a bomb at the school, and you're just standing here blocking the intersection..." This was more agitated.
"If anything happens to my child, I won't live either. If you have guts, shoot me in the chest..." This was nonsensical.
"I once went on a blind date with someone who claimed to be a cop; he treated me to six dollars' worth of Spicy Hot Pot and messed with me thirteen times. Cops are all worthless..." This was outright madness.
...
The crowd was riled up as they surrounded the young officers, pointing fingers and cursing. Some even ignored the submachine guns carried by the armed police and began pushing forward.
