Zhong Kui's Diary
Diving to the bottom of the water, I saw Jiang Feiyu following Zhuo Wei doing calisthenics. Even with jumping exercises, Jiang Feiyu remained unfazed. Although I knew Jiang Feiyu was a good swimmer, I was still somewhat surprised.
Zhuo Wei seemed a bit helpless and stopped doing other exercises, continuously repeating the jumping movements since they were the most physically demanding.
Five minutes passed...
Ten minutes passed...
Twenty minutes passed...
I became increasingly astonished as Jiang Feiyu acted as if nothing was wrong, bouncing around next to Zhuo Wei. In fact, his movements were even more vigorous than Zhuo Wei's.
Could this guy be cheating?
I moved a bit closer and scrutinized Jiang Feiyu. He was only wearing a pair of swim trunks, and there was nothing suspicious about him. I didn't think he could hide an oxygen tank in his swim trunks.
It's important to note that holding one's breath underwater, even for a world record, is only twenty minutes. And that’s just holding one’s breath without moving; adjusting one's body to a hibernation mode while remaining still makes oxygen consumption nearly negligible.
Yet this Jiang Feiyu kept jumping and moving in the water for over twenty minutes, looking completely unfazed. It seemed he could last for another twenty minutes or even longer.
Could it be that this guy knows some spell? Or is he actually a Dragon Palace Descendant?
Both possibilities seemed unlikely.
Should I observe a bit longer?
To avoid worrying Kong Xuan and the others, I surfaced from the River Noodles and updated them on the situation. Upon hearing how impressive Jiang Feiyu was, Kong Xuan and the others exchanged incredulous glances.
Once again diving into the water, I approached Jiang Feiyu, staying about a meter away, and observed intently.
Thirty minutes...
Forty minutes...
An hour...
Since Zhuo Wei and the others entered the water, it had been over an hour. Jiang Feiyu was like an indefatigable child, bouncing around and performing jumps, even occasionally giving me a peace sign.
I smiled in response, somewhat surprised. After observing for so long, I had not noticed anything unusual. The only oddity was that when Jiang Feiyu raised his hands above his head, there was something unnatural about it.
After another twenty minutes, I patted Zhuo Wei on the shoulder and pointed to River Noodles, signaling him to come up. Given Jiang Feiyu's current state, this kind of test was meaningless for him.
The three of them surfaced from River Noodles. I shouted for Kong Xuan to help pull them up while signaling Kong Xuan with my eyes. Kong Xuan nodded in understanding and reached out to pull Jiang Feiyu—whether or not Jiang Feiyu had used a spell would be clear as soon as Kong Xuan made contact.
After climbing onto the speedboat, Kong Xuan gave me a wry smile and shook his head, indicating that Jiang Feiyu had not used a spell. Of course, it was also possible that Jiang Feiyu had used a spell but Kong Xuan couldn't detect it; that scenario would only occur if Jiang Feiyu's magical level was above Kong Xuan's.
Kong Xuan was already a master-level expert; anyone above him would at least be at the grandmaster level.
After pondering for a moment, I advised Jiang Feiyu and Liu Qi not to compete with others just yet, as the champion would be announced tomorrow. When I said this, Jiang Feiyu nodded with satisfaction; in his eyes, the championship was already his.
After getting ashore and tidying up our clothes, I let Jiang Feiyu and Liu Qi head back first while the four of us sat by the riverbank smoking in silence. How did things develop into this?
According to the DNA test results, Liu Qi had the highest probability of being activated instinctively but nearly got killed by Zhuo Wei underwater. Even so, this wasn't surprising since probabilistic events can happen. However, Jiang Feiyu's performance underwater was too bizarre. My earlier speculation seemed to hold true: there were only two possibilities. First, Jiang Feiyu might actually be a Dragon Palace Descendant who inadvertently activated his instincts. Second, he could use spells.
Yet both possibilities seemed somewhat untenable. If Jiang Feiyu were a Dragon Palace Descendant, why did the DNA test show no relation to Wen Jianru? If he could use spells, then why couldn't Kong Xuan detect any traces of spell usage from Jiang Feiyu?
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I pondered for a moment before pulling out my phone to call Lou Wei, asking him if there was any possibility that the DNA test results could be wrong.
Lou Wei didn't understand what I meant. I recounted the situation underwater to him, and Lou Wei exclaimed, "You mean we mixed up Jiang Feiyu's and Liu Qi's blood samples?"
"Exactly. Other than that, I can't think of any other possibility," I replied straightforwardly.
"I'll ask around and call you back shortly," Lou Wei said before hanging up.
Fatty cleared his throat when I ended the call and turned to Zhuo Wei, asking, "Zhuo Wei, is it possible for your Dragon Palace Descendant to trigger this instinct on their own?"
Zhuo Wei frowned and replied, "That possibility definitely exists. For example, if Jiang Feiyu went swimming and accidentally sank to the bottom without anyone noticing, in a desperate struggle, the instinct could be triggered."
"So you're saying Jiang Feiyu could possibly be your Dragon King's son, right?" Fatty chuckled.
Zhuo Wei smiled wryly and nodded, "From a swimming ability perspective, it's indeed possible. But if that's the case, then this DNA test is really unreliable."
Fatty laughed but didn't respond to Zhuo Wei. Instead, he asked Kong Xuan, "Are you sure Jiang Feiyu doesn't know any spells?"
Kong Xuan rolled her eyes and huffed, "Out of the four of us here, you're the only one who doesn't know any spells. Anyone can question me, but you can't."
Fatty chuckled, "Just exploring the idea!"
Kong Xuan then furrowed her brow and said, "Still sticking to my earlier point: I haven't found any traces of Jiang Feiyu using spells. Or perhaps he's a Grandmaster Level expert that I can't detect."
"How is that even possible? There aren't that many Grandmaster Level experts around," I shook my head.
"……"
Several people discussed for a while, still entangled in these few questions, and had no other clues. Just as they were feeling frustrated, Lou Wei called back: "Zheng Nan, something seems off."
"What do you mean?" I asked in confusion.
"You sent two test tubes of blood samples, and the label on Liu Qi's test tube shows signs of being torn!" Lou Wei said in a deep voice.
"What? What do you mean by that?" I was greatly surprised.
"I mean, Liu Qi's blood has been swapped." Lou Wei said slowly.
"Liu Qi's blood has been swapped?" I exclaimed. Kong Xuan and the others looked at me in disbelief when they heard me shout, especially Zhuo Wei, who after a moment of shock, began to ask what was going on.
Lou Wei seemed to hear the commotion on our side and lightly cleared his throat: "Zheng Nan, maybe you can ask the female officer who delivered the samples if she encountered anything unusual on the way."
After hanging up the phone and sharing the situation, everyone believed that Jiang Feiyu's blood sample had been switched with Liu Qi's. As for what exactly happened, we still needed to ask that female officer.
I quickly called Lingfeng to update him on the situation. Lingfeng was greatly astonished: "Are you saying someone bribed Huang? That's unlikely; Huang has been in the criminal police team for three years and is about to be promoted to deputy captain. Plus, her family is quite wealthy; even if she received a million as a reward, she might not be tempted."
"Anyway, Lou Wei mentioned that there are signs of the label being torn. You should call her to your office; we'll be there shortly." After saying that, I hung up.
The four of us quickly arrived at the Municipal Public Security Bureau. Although Lingfeng had been promoted to Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee, his office had not moved to the municipal party building; he was still in his original office within the Municipal Public Security Bureau. This could be considered a rarity in Star City's political scene.
As soon as we entered, we saw the female officer sitting at Lingfeng's desk. Upon hearing the noise, she turned around and her expression changed immediately upon seeing us.
"What’s going on?" I directly asked Lingfeng.
Lingfeng didn't bother to stand up and greet us; he just nodded at us and then pointed at the female officer with a wry smile: "Zheng Nan, this is Huang Dan. I just asked her about it; there have been some changes... Huang, why don't you explain it to Zheng Nan?"
The female officer Huang Dan nodded, lightly coughed, and said, "At that time, after I received the blood samples, I took these three test tubes and got in the car, preparing to hand them over to Lou Wei..."
I quickly interrupted Huang Dan, "Three test tubes? How did you also take Ai's blood sample? Didn't I tell you to only take Jiang Feiyu's and Liu Qi's samples?"
Huang Dan had a bitter smile on her face. "Yes, you did tell me to bring Jiang Feiyu's and Liu Qi's blood samples to Lou Wei. But at that moment, I was confused and just took all three test tubes with me. It wasn't until halfway through the drive that I realized I had also brought Ai's blood sample. I thought the matters here were more important, so I planned to deliver Jiang Feiyu's and Liu Qi's blood samples to Lou Wei first, then return Ai's blood sample to the hospital."
I glanced at Kong Xuan, who whispered, "There is a mind control technique that can influence someone's mindset in a short time. Both Qingcheng and I know about this spell, but we lack the ability to cast it."
Implying that such a spell could only be released by someone at Grandmaster Level or above.
Nodding, I continued to ask Huang Dan, "And then?"
A hint of panic flashed in Huang Dan's eyes, along with some confusion. "Halfway through the drive, my boyfriend suddenly called me with something urgent to discuss. He asked where I was; I told him I was on Liberation Road. He was nearby and asked me to wait a minute. Thinking a minute wouldn't matter, I waited for a while. When my boyfriend came up, he opened my bag looking for something and then took a look at the three test tubes before getting out of the car."
"Are you saying your boyfriend tampered with those three test tubes?" I frowned and asked.
"Yes," Huang Dan nodded, her brow furrowed and her expression increasingly confused.
Hmm, what's going on with this Huang Dan? I slightly raised my chin towards Lingfeng, silently asking if he thought Huang Dan might be crazy.
