Zhong Kui's Diary
"Eight thousand!" Ji Wuyuan frowned and hesitated for a moment before playing a tile.
"Peng! Peng! Peng!" Jiang Ziyu, sitting at the head of the table, shouted excitedly, as if he had just spotted a hen.
"Do you even know how to play? Why are you playing a new tile at this point?" John rolled his eyes at Ji Wuyuan. After a while, he turned to Jiang Ziyu and said, "You, if you’ve called 'peng', hurry up and play your tile, don’t dawdle!"
Jiang Ziyu didn’t take offense and cheerfully threw out a one bamboo tile.
Ji Wuyuan chuckled, reached for a tile, closed his eyes, and rubbed his thumb vigorously across the Mahjong tile surface. A look of relief washed over his face as if he had just resolved a severe constipation issue. He slapped the tile down on the table and shouted, "Self-draw!" At the same time, he flipped his hand over to reveal his tiles.
Looking up, it was clear that the tile he slapped down was a two bamboo, while in his hand were two eight bamboos, one one bamboo, and one three bamboo. Clearly, he had drawn the two bamboo tile he needed. His gaze swept across the other tiles on the table; he had already melded four bamboos, six bamboos, and nine bamboos. Damn, this guy had self-drawn a pure hand.
"This is ridiculous; you can self-draw with that two bamboo?" John pushed his own tiles forward, revealing three two bamboos among them.
"Damn, that really is strange!" Jiang Ziyu scratched his head in frustration.
"Haha, let’s go again," Ji Wuyuan pushed the tiles to the center and began shuffling them.
"I’m done; I can’t keep going," I said as I leaned over the table in exhaustion. "Ji Wuyuan, I've been playing Mahjong with you for seven nights straight; I really can’t take it anymore. How about you ask for something else?"
Ji Wuyuan laughed heartily: "If you want something from someone else, you need to show some sincerity. You can’t give up after just seven nights?"
John lit a cigarette: "Actually, I don’t want to play anymore either. Since it’s fate, just lend the Spatial Portal to Zheng Nan."
That’s right; I came to borrow that Red Space Portal from Ji Wuyuan.
Jin Manyuan that beast, has kidnapped all my friends and family in Star City. This includes the entire family of Lingfeng, the whole family of Fatty, Kong Xuan and His Wife, my parents, as well as Guo'er and Qingcheng. Even Tang Zian and Tang the Elder have been taken away. Goodness, this could fill three tables of Mahjong.
With no other choice, I had to follow Jin Manyuan's plan, activating the seven magic circles one by one before entering the Hall of Life and Death to Summon the Judgment of Life and Death to modify the Book of Life and Death. To accomplish all this, I first needed to borrow a Spatial Portal from Ji Wuyuan. Otherwise, even if I were to die, I wouldn't be able to travel across seven provinces in such a short time, especially since they are spread from south to north.
The frustrating part is that I can't tell Ji Wuyuan the real reason; otherwise, he definitely won't lend it to me. Just thinking about it with my toes, having one Judgment of Life and Death is already enough to scare him. He would absolutely not tolerate another powerful figure of the same level emerging. Instead of asking for his help, it would be better to hope he doesn't cause any trouble.
As for my friends and family, they are nothing more than weeds in his eyes. Even if Jin Manyuan were to kill them all, Ji Wuyuan wouldn't bat an eye.
I fabricated a lie about traveling the world, but Ji Wuyuan scoffed at it and refused outright. Unable to withstand my crying and threatening him with a duel, along with a few good words from Jiang Ziyu, he furrowed his brows and pondered for a long time before reluctantly agreeing. However, he also set a condition: he wanted to play a few rounds of Mahjong first since he hadn't played in a while.
These rounds of Mahjong turned into a marathon lasting several nights. If I still had my magic power, I might have really dueled him.
"Alright, I'll lend it to you," said Ji Wuyuan, standing up and Summoning the portal. He explained how to use the Spell to summon it and how to input location coordinates inside. Fortunately, this type of Summon only requires reciting incantations without needing magic power to activate it; however, there is a cooldown period of at least half an hour before it can be used again.
It wasn't too simple or too difficult. After about ten minutes, I learned how to use it, setting the exit at my store. After waving goodbye to Ji Wuyuan and the others, I stepped out through the portal.
This was my first time using this thing myself; I was a bit excited and almost tripped over the threshold.
"Hey, Boss Zhong! When did you get here? What's this Red Door?" As soon as I steadied myself, I heard the surprised voice of Shen Sipan. Looking up, I saw him standing at the restroom door with a cigarette in his mouth, looking astonished as he approached me while glancing around at the Red Door.
On the other side of the portal, Ji Wuyuan and others were sitting around the Mahjong table smoking and chatting. John happened to be facing the door; upon seeing Shen Sipan, he waved casually: "Hello!"
Both Ji Wuyuan and Jiang Ziyu turned their heads to look at us. Ji Wuyuan raised an eyebrow and waved at me; suddenly, the portal closed.
Seeing all this unfold, Shen Sipan stared at me in disbelief: "B-Boss... what is this door... about?"
I hadn't intended to hide anything from Shen Sipan, as I now needed an assistant. With Fatty Kong Xuan and others already kidnapped by Jin Manyuan, he was my only option for help.
I smiled and said, "This Red Door is a teleportation array that can take us to various places around the world."
Shen Sipan widened his eyes in disbelief, opening his mouth to speak.
I raised my hand to stop Shen Sipan's question: "Are you finding it hard to believe? Don't ask why; just pack your things and come with me. There will be many things you have never heard of, but no matter how surprised you are, don't ask why, because I can't give you a scientific explanation."
I expected Shen Sipan to be shocked or flustered, but he simply responded with an "oh," then picked up his phone from the table: "Alright, I'm ready to go."
"Is that all you're taking with you?"
"Yeah, everything else can be bought with money," Shen Sipan chuckled.
"Do you have a lot of money?"
"I don't have any money, but since this is a business trip, Boss, as long as you have money, that's enough."
"…"
I recalled the seven locations Jin Manyuan had given me and set one of the exit points. After half an hour of cooldown, when I opened the door again, it revealed a section of the crumbling Great Wall.
The first location was in a certain segment of the northern Wan Li Great Wall.
This section of the Great Wall was not one of the tourist spots like Badaling or Shanhaiguan; instead, it was located in a desolate mountain area. From a distance, the wall and beacon tower looked exceptionally dilapidated—one could even describe it as ruins. Further away, there was an iron tower; it was unclear whether it was a mobile base station or a television tower. It seemed that even in this desolate area, there were villages nearby.
Shen Sipan and I stepped out from the teleportation portal and stored it away. I looked around. According to Jin Manyuan's hints, there should be an unactivated magic circle inside that beacon tower ahead.
I beckoned for Shen Sipan to follow and walked towards the beacon tower.
The wall was overgrown with weeds, and a section had completely collapsed, leaving a mess of stones and rubble that made it difficult to walk. It took us nearly five minutes to cover a distance of just over two hundred meters.
The beacon tower was relatively intact, with only one corner having collapsed. Although it was also covered in weeds, it still retained the appearance of the original structure.
I took out my phone and checked again, seeing the message: "The keyhole is located three meters below this beacon tower." Shen Sipan, noticing this, curiously leaned over to take a look.
Reaching the center of the room, I pulled out an iron pickaxe and an iron shovel from the Mustard Seed Pendant. Spitting into my palm and rubbing my hands together, I grabbed the pickaxe and began digging.
Shen Sipan cleared his throat beside me. Without looking up, I said, "Just stay there and don't say anything." At that moment, I really didn't have the energy to explain where my iron shovel had come from.
After prying open the top stone slab, I found compacted earth underneath. This soil seemed to have been tamped down; when I struck it with the pickaxe, it only penetrated about five centimeters deep.
After digging for about ten minutes, I felt a strain in my back. Standing up, I handed the pickaxe to Shen Sipan. "Here, you take a turn."
Shen Sipan hesitated for a moment before taking the pickaxe. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes and offered me one with a smile. "Boss Zhong, there's something I'm not sure if I should say."
I lit the cigarette and took a deep drag before frowning. "I already know; there are some things I can't answer for you. As for where this iron shovel came from, don't ask. Even if you do, I won't tell you."
"You misunderstood my meaning," Shen Sipan scratched his head.
"Oh? What do you mean then?" I exhaled a thick cloud of smoke.
"I think the location on your phone seems to point below the beacon tower," Shen Sipan said with a smile.
"Aren't we digging downwards now?" I didn't immediately grasp what he meant.
"I mean below that," Shen Sipan pointed outside the beacon tower.
I quickly took out my phone and looked again at the message from Ming on WeChat: "The keyhole is three meters below this beacon tower." According to Shen Sipan's understanding, it seemed more likely to be outside the beacon tower. I felt a bit frustrated and asked, "Why didn't you say so earlier?"
"You didn't let me before," Shen Sipan replied innocently.
I snorted and walked to one side of the beacon tower, poking my head out of the arrow slit. Looking down, I saw a sheer cliff; it was definitely not possible to find anything there.
Walking to the other side, I looked down again. The slope here was slightly gentler, and about three meters away from the beacon tower, there was a patch of bushes that was strikingly green.
If I had seen this patch of bushes on any other day, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. But now, with preconceived notions in my mind, I immediately concluded that there must be something wrong beneath those bushes.
I called Shen Sipan over to grab the Iron Shovel and we returned to the collapsed section of the city wall. Cautiously, we climbed down. Although I had mentioned that this area was slightly flatter compared to the sheer cliff on the other side, it still had a slope of about fifty to sixty degrees.
We carefully made our way to the bushes. I took out my dagger and cut through the bushes until they were mostly cleared, then signaled for Shen Sipan to start digging.
Despite his gentle demeanor, Shen Sipan was actually quite skilled at working. He first stretched his limbs and then grabbed the Iron Shovel to start digging. With one scoop, he removed a large chunk of dirt. Not only that, but he also wielded the Iron Shovel with impressive skill as if he had been digging for a living for over twenty years.
