Zhong Kui's Diary
Shen Sipan suddenly pointed to a square tile on the ground and said, "Hey, the sixth substitute leader, why don't you check under that tile?"
Song Xi looked at Shen Sipan with suspicion, hesitantly walked over to the tile, squatted down, and touched it. The tile immediately showed slight ripples. Surprised, Song Xi quickly drew a dagger and pried up the tile in just a few moves. Inside was indeed a rusty mooncake tin, with the pattern of Chang'e Flying to the Moon faintly visible on top.
"Boss Zhong, this woman can also pull things out of thin air just like you," Shen Sipan whispered beside me.
Of course, the Song Family is one of the four great Taoist families; a starving camel is bigger than a horse, and even a broken ship has three thousand nails. How could they possibly lack something like a Spatial Bag? However, I couldn't explain this to Shen Sipan, so I just nodded and silently acted cool.
Over there, Song Xi had already opened the tin, revealing a notebook inside. The cover featured three handsome guys, and I couldn't help but sigh—wasn't this the former Tiger Team?
Song Xi wasn't very interested in Tiger Team, so she directly flipped to the first page, which indeed had three characters written on it—Yi Jin Jing. After flipping through a few more pages randomly, her face lit up with joy.
After tucking the Yi Jin Jing into her clothes, Song Xi smiled at me and said, "Ghost Brother, I've got my things. What do you want to steal? Let me know if I can help."
I chuckled lightly and replied, "We just came to steal something to eat; do you believe that?"
"Do you think I would believe that?" Song Xi immediately shot me a sideways glance.
"Actually, we also came to steal the Yi Jin Jing and the Washing Marrow Classic, but you got here first!" Shen Sipan suddenly chimed in from the side.
"Really?" Song Xi frowned and looked at Shen Sipan several times before suspiciously asking me.
Sister, could you hurry up and leave with what you've stolen? You're getting in our way and affecting our next move. But I casually replied, "That's right; we also came looking for the Washing Marrow Classic and Yi Jin Jing. Alas, we arrived a step too late. Since you're familiar with Taoism, it wouldn't be appropriate for me to snatch it from you; otherwise, I would have drawn my sword by now!"
"I see..." Song Xi hesitated for a moment and said, "How about this: since we're fellow Taoists, I'll let you make a copy?"
"Damn, where did this Photocopier come from?" Just as I was about to refuse, Shen Sipan chuckled, "No need for a photocopy, just take a picture of us."
Song Xi thought for a moment and handed me two notebooks. I shot a frustrated glance at Shen Sipan, thinking this guy must be crazy. What use is it for me to take a picture of this? However, to shake off Song Xi, I took out my phone and snapped a few pictures of the two notebooks.
After Song Xi put away the notebooks, he said, "I'll be on my way now."
I waved with a smile, feeling a bit curious about what kind of Spell someone from the Song Family would use to leave this place. Would it be a 'whoosh' as they took off, or a 'zoom' as they burrowed into the ground, or perhaps a 'poof' as they vanished into thin air?
To my surprise, Song Xi simply opened the door and walked away.
I shook my head with a wry smile, put my phone away, and stepped to the door to look around. Seeing no one outside, I signaled for Shen Sipan to follow.
We crept around like thieves and finally found the kitchen. Just as Shen Sipan had said, there were all kinds of Poultry and Fish in there. We grabbed some semi-finished products and cooked them in the microwave, enjoying a hearty meal before rubbing our bellies and sneaking out.
Once outside, we got lost.
How could this Shaolin Temple be so big? Everywhere we looked there were main halls and side rooms—Clear Heart Hall, Dizang Hall, Arhat Hall, Bodhi Hall. We couldn't find the Main Hall anywhere.
We were wandering around like headless flies.
As we walked, Shen Sipan suddenly asked an odd question: "Boss Zhong, do you think there will be people dancing in the square outside the Main Hall? If so, we can just follow the sound."
I cursed, "What nonsense is that? Don't think that just because it's evening there will be people dancing in every square. Have you ever heard of **square dancing? Who would dare to dance here? Besides, this is the Shaolin Temple. Where would you find old folks dancing?"
"Isn't there still the old monks and Old Nun?" Shen Sipan laughed.
"Even if there is an old monk, they must have long been practicing close combat!" Since I couldn't get a clear answer from this guy, I decided to just ramble on.
The two of us sneaked around, and finally found that there were no high monks patrolling inside the Shaolin Temple. We moved freely and eventually reached the square outside the Main Hall. The square was actually not very big, at most it could be considered a playground. In the middle, there were a few large incense burners and some trees planted, making it look even narrower.
I couldn't help but feel a bit dumbfounded. The WeChat message indicated that there was a deep well about a meter to the left of the square, but the square was so small that we finished searching it in just two minutes. There was no ancient well to be found, not even a large pit; it was all paved with bricks.
I had some doubts in my mind. Jin Manyuan had last activated the magic circle eight hundred years ago, and decades ago, the warlord Shih Yousan had set fire to the Shaolin Temple. Except for a few halls that remained, most of the buildings had been reduced to ashes. The current Shaolin Temple had been extensively renovated with huge funds from the state after New China was established. Wouldn't Jin Manyuan's dry well have already been filled in?
Oh right, there was already mobile phone signal here; I could just call Jin Manyuan directly.
When I mentioned this to Jin Manyuan, he paused for a while before asking, "Zheng Nan, where are you standing now?"
"On the square!"
"What does it say on my WeChat?"
"It says there's a deep well about a meter to the left of the square. But this square isn't even a meter wide..."
Jin Manyuan interrupted my explanation: "Zheng Nan, I'm really curious—did you buy your graduation certificate?"
"What do you mean by that?" I replied, feeling displeased.
"I clearly wrote that it's one meter to the left of the square, so it should be measured starting from the left edge of the square and then going out one meter," Jin Manyuan said disdainfully. "Your language teacher must have used a learning machine or something."
I awkwardly hung up the phone, feeling frustrated at being looked down upon by this guy.
Walking to the left side of the square and crossing the bushes, I walked about fifty meters. Just as I passed by, Shen Sipan was standing in front of a bush urinating, unable to hold it in. I ignored him and searched around for a while, but I didn't find any deep well. Just as I was about to call Jin Manyuan to question him, Shen Sipan suddenly shouted, "Boss Zhong, come here for a moment."
"What's up? Do you still need me to help you with your pee at this age?" I walked over and asked with a frown.
Shen Sipan chuckled, shook off his urine, and pointed at the bushes ahead. "Boss, something seems off here!"
I stepped closer and tested the ground; the grass was almost knee-deep. When I stepped down, the soil was soft and showed no abnormalities. "There's nothing wrong here."
Shen Sipan cleared his throat lightly. "Based on my years of experience urinating on grass, usually the liquid would accumulate on the surface for a while before slowly seeping into the soil. But when I just urinated, it went straight into the bushes. This means there must be something strange underneath!"
After saying that, he jumped high and, using his weight along with a falling stone, stomped down hard on the bushes. A rather dull sound echoed back; indeed, it was hollow inside.
I took out an Iron Shovel and handed it to Shen Sipan while lighting a cigarette myself. I laughed and said, "I have to admit, your urine is quite impressive; the task of digging the well is up to you now."
Shen Sipan grinned and didn’t refuse. He rolled up his sleeves and started digging. After about ten minutes, he uncovered a Large Stone Slab. He lifted it up, revealing a Dark Hole.
Sure enough, there was a deep well right here.
I took out my flashlight and shone it down; it was about ten meters deep and there was no water inside—just a dry well.
I retrieved a Climbing Rope and found a large tree nearby to tie one end around its trunk. Then I fashioned another rope to hang the flashlight around my neck like a necklace. I asked Shen Sipan to keep an eye on me from above. With a grunt, I picked up the shovel and slid down into the well.
Even though there was a Large Stone Slab covering it, the bottom of the well was still muddy—probably due to groundwater seeping in. Stepping down felt slippery, almost like stepping on a pile of fatty meat, which made me somewhat uncomfortable.
After scooping a few times with the shovel, I hit something metallic below. Quickly clearing away the mud revealed a Metal Plate underneath. As I lifted it up, I saw an Indigo Metal Hemisphere inside, just like the previous four magic circles; this Metal Hemisphere also shimmered with silver light.
I placed my hand on the Martial Star Platform and silently recited the Spell, releasing the Opening Sun and Martial Star Scroll from within me. Once the magic circle was activated, the Indigo Metal Hemisphere turned black, and the silver light vanished.
After covering the Metal Plate, I checked my internal energy. The Lightning Magic was abundant, like a vast ocean, with no possibility of further increase. The Devouring Energy and Fire Element energy had also recovered significantly. As for the Yin-Yang Energy, if it was like a river in my body while in the Valley of Death, then now it resembled a surging Great River.
Suddenly, a saying came to mind: "Nurturing a tiger only invites trouble." Am I nurturing a tiger? What is this surging Yin-Yang Energy within me? Will it turn against me once it reaches a certain level?
Although it showed no signs of being harmful to me at the moment, who could guarantee that it wouldn't suddenly rebel and rampage through my body?
Just as I was feeling frustrated, a startled voice came from above the well, followed by Shen Sipan shouting loudly, "Who are you? What do you want?"
Then, sounds of fighting erupted from the well, sounding quite intense.
"What’s going on?" I shouted as I grabbed the rope and quickly climbed up.
"Ugh..." Someone had their mouth covered. After pausing for about a second, Shen Sipan's heavy breathing could be heard, followed by his hoarse shout: "Boss Zhong, hurry up! I can't hold on much longer!"
Damn, what is happening? I quickened my climbing speed.
With just two meters left to the well opening, a strong gust of wind suddenly rushed down. Instinctively, I reached out my right hand to block it. With a loud crash, this gust carried an overwhelming force. The power was so immense that it felt like Mount Tai pressing down on me; in that moment, I could barely breathe.
