Zhong Kui's Diary
“Fatty, you better stop right there!” A Li shouted angrily as she grabbed a mop and charged at Fatty.
“I won’t stop! I’ll be this way just because I want to!” Fatty turned and ran, his chubby body swaying from side to side.
With a whoosh, the mop flew through the air, quickly approaching Fatty's head.
It seemed like he had eyes in the back of his head; without looking back, Fatty swiftly grabbed the mop and casually tossed it aside. Then, with a powerful push, he leaped up, grabbing the railing of the second floor and flipping himself over.
Turning around, Fatty smiled at A Li: “If you’re not convinced, why don’t you cast a Spell?”
“Hmph, you only dare to say that because you know I have no magic!” A Li scoffed, then turned to me: “Ghost Brother, can’t you control Fatty?”
“What did Fatty do?” I asked with a smile.
“He just pinched my butt!” A Li pointed angrily at Fatty.
“It’s not like you lost any flesh! What’s the big deal? You never used to get this mad,” I laughed dismissively and turned to Lingfeng: “Why don’t you ask Lingfeng? This is his place after all.”
“I didn’t see anything,” Lingfeng said as he gathered his playing cards and called out to Fatty on the second floor: “Fatty, what did you do to A Li? Can you demonstrate it again?”
“That wouldn’t be appropriate, would it?” Fatty chuckled from above.
“You’re all bad people! Qingcheng, let’s go shopping,” A Li stomped her foot and pulled Qingcheng out. Qingcheng smiled and waved goodbye to us as they left.
I turned back to watch Lingfeng, Kong Xuan, and Tang Zian play cards. The round ended quickly, and while Kong Xuan shuffled the cards, I glanced out the window. The leaves in the distance had already turned golden. Was autumn here?
At this moment, it had been two months since Grandma Song used the Vedic Formation to intercept Jin Manyuan from absorbing Solar God Energy. Because of the Vedic Formation, all Cultivators had their magic drained away and were reduced to ordinary people. Without magic, Cultivators couldn’t do anything to the Song Family; after cursing them out, everyone helplessly scattered like birds and beasts.
It could be said that for the next few decades, no Spell masters would emerge. Everyone had returned to square one; if they wanted to become masters again, they would have to start from scratch.
"Over the next thirty years, it will be the era of martial arts!" This was the original statement from Kong Xuan, and at the same time, he was throwing punches at Song Yuqing. Although this guy didn't deserve to die, he would definitely suffer some physical pain.
Despite the beating, we didn't fall out with the Song Family, as we still had to face whatever Jin Manyuan had released—the Dark Ten Demon Kings.
According to Grandma Song's prediction, these Dark Overlords might lurk for three months to a year before emerging to wreak havoc on humanity. During their lurking period, they would seek a human body as a vessel.
I asked Grandma Song why they needed to possess human bodies. She sighed and replied that humans possess various negative emotions such as hatred, greed, and violence. While spirits also have negative emotions, they are not as pronounced as those in humans.
When Grandma Song said this, Fatty nodded thoughtfully and expressed his view that if the negative emotions of spirits were 'a', then human negative emotions would be 'e'.
This beast, why don't you just 'h'? Wouldn't that be even more pronounced?
As of now, we could only gather everyone's strength to hunt down these demon kings and eliminate them before they evolved. If these Dark Overlords successfully evolved, it would be akin to an apocalypse for the Yin-Yang Realms. This is no exaggeration; among the Dark Overlords, one is called 'Ghost Car', which requires eating ninety-nine children each time, while another named 'Qiongqi' takes pleasure in devouring humans. There is also one called 'Queen Mother of the West', who is said to control disasters and punishments; she not only eats humans but also devours demons...
And the task of eliminating these demon kings has unexpectedly fallen on me. On one hand, it's because my martial arts skills are quite formidable; on the other hand, among all the cultivators, I am the only one left with a remnant of Devouring Energy within me.
This Devouring Energy was preserved during the final moments of the Mutual Support Technique by that mysterious energy that appeared. As for why I survived in the Mutual Support Technique and managed to retain the Devouring Energy, that remains a mystery.
With great power comes great responsibility—whoever coined that phrase has left me speechless and unable to refute it; I can only accept this mission to protect Earth's peace with a sense of duty.
I informed Lou Wei about this matter in hopes of gaining his assistance. Although I couldn't extend Number One's lifespan, Number One was broad-minded enough to understand that this situation was beyond my control and did not blame me. However, the Treasure Office no longer had any reason to exist; Lou Wei had to return to his old job as the leader of the Dragon Group.
With a command from the leader of the Dragon Group, various national agencies began their search operations. Any sign of movement would be reported immediately to the Dragon Group, where A Li's father—Middle-Aged Man Song Shijie—would be responsible for screening. Although his magical powers had diminished, his experience allowed him to discern whether reports were caused by Dark Overlords.
However, over these two months, no information regarding the Dark Overlords surfaced; those ten Dark Overlords seemed to have vanished without a trace in this world. Meanwhile, we could only pass our days playing cards...
Inevitably, there exists a bond between people. During this time, A Li and Song Xi quickly integrated into our circle. Moreover, A Li had developed a close relationship with Qingcheng while Song Xi got along quite well with An Ran.
Just now, Fatty asked A Li how you Grandmaster Level experts—who have lived for hundreds or even thousands of years—could still be lively despite losing your powers; shouldn't you age rapidly and die? This naturally provoked A Li's anger as she clenched her fists and approached Fatty for a debate. Unexpectedly, her martial arts skills were far inferior to Fatty's, and during their scuffle, she ended up being taken advantage of...
If there were no more killings in the world, gathering with a few friends to drink, chat, play cards, and argue would indeed be a very happy thing.
The phone rang, and when I looked at it, it was Lou Wei calling. I was taken aback; could it be news about the Dark Overlord? The people playing cards hushed and asked me to lower my voice before I answered the call.
“Zheng Nan, in Dongpeng Province, Wuxian County, General Township, Cauliflower Village, there’s a family with the surname Wei that has encountered an unusual situation,” Lou Wei got straight to the point.
“What unusual situation?” I asked.
“According to the villagers, severed limbs have been frequently appearing near their home.”
“Is that really unusual? It’s just severed hands and feet. It could be that a criminal killed someone and disposed of the body, or maybe wild boars dug up corpses from nearby graves,” I said dismissively, secretly amused by Lou Wei's paranoia.
“Did you hear what I said? There are severed limbs appearing. The key point is not the severed limbs but their appearance. Have you ever seen a hand or a foot walking on the road?” Lou Wei huffed.
“What?” I sat up straight in surprise and exclaimed.
This shout caught the attention of Kong Xuan and others, who turned to look at me with questioning expressions.
“Our Dragon Group has already captured video from the scene. I’ll send it to you shortly. I think you should set off right away since it’s quite a distance from Star City to Wuxian County in Dongpeng Province,” Lou Wei said with a smile.
“Alright, I’ll head out now!” I then complained, “Can’t you arrange for a helicopter? After all, I'm fighting for all of humanity.”
Lou Wei chuckled, “Right now it's just suspicion. If we can confirm it’s really the Dark Overlord, I’ll definitely send a helicopter for you.”
“By then, what good will that do?” I hung up the phone in frustration.
Before long, Lou Wei sent over the video.
This video seemed to have been shot using some kind of drone-like device because its perspective looked down from above. The filming took place in the evening; the light was dimming, but one could still vaguely see the scenery below.
A dilapidated wooden house stood on the ground. Although the wooden planks of the walls had been treated with tung oil, years of wear had left the walls a shade of dark gray.
The door of the wooden house was tightly shut, and it was unclear whether anyone lived inside. The camera zoomed forward, and just as the perspective moved away from the doorway, the wooden door suddenly swung open, revealing a hand in the frame.
The scene flashed by, and we all gasped because we saw that after the wooden door was pulled open, a right hand emerged—a right hand severed at the elbow. It seemed almost alive as it hopped onto the threshold, appearing ready to step out.
The staff from Dragon Group responsible for filming seemed to notice this strange phenomenon as well. They quickly maneuvered the camera back to face the wooden house, focusing on the door. The shot swayed slowly, clearly indicating that the camera was hovering in mid-air.
The wooden door in the frame stood wide open, revealing nothing but darkness inside. The eerie right hand had vanished. If it weren't for the camera capturing that moment, I might have doubted my own eyes.
The camera shook slightly and then slowly moved toward the door. The colors grew increasingly dim, making it impossible to see what lay behind the door. Just as we were feeling frustrated, a beam of light shot from the camera, piercing through the darkness behind the wooden door, allowing us to glimpse the layout of the room inside.
Inside was a space resembling a living room—at its center against the wall stood an Eight Immortals Table. Above it hung a shrine containing a statue of a Bodhisattva. The distance was too great and the light too dim to discern which Bodhisattva it was.
As the camera continued to move forward, just when we could make out the statue of Avalokiteshvara on the shrine, a hand suddenly reached out in front of us and grabbed hold of the lens. Then, all we saw was violent shaking of the frame before it turned into static.
The video ended there. We exchanged glances; clearly, someone had knocked down and destroyed the camera at that last moment, and it was highly likely that it was done by that right hand we had seen earlier.
Damn, what just happened? Could it be that this severed right hand had become sentient?
