Zhong Kui's Diary
With our step, the ground beneath us began to tremble slightly. Gradually, the blue color on the floor deepened, and as it did, faint blue rays of light started to flicker around. These rays increased in number and intensity until it felt as if hundreds of blue searchlights crisscrossed within the room. Our faces flickered in this light, while the trembling beneath our feet grew more intense.
Just as we were becoming dizzy from the spectacle, the trembling suddenly stopped, and all the blue light became soft like moonlight. Immediately, at the intersection of the pentagram lines in the center, five wisps of light smoke rose. This smoke coalesced in midair, becoming denser until it was as thick as ink, almost tangible.
Fang Boda shouted, "Focus, the Puppet is about to take shape."
At that moment, a flash of white light suddenly appeared. I instinctively closed my eyes, and when I opened them again, I found that Fang Boda and Linzi had all vanished. In front of me stood a ragged beggar holding a Dog-Beating Stick in one hand and a broken bowl in the other, looking at me pitifully: "Sir, please spare some change."
What happened to the skilled martial artists? Where is the Puppet? How did I end up with this beggar asking for alms? And what about Fang Boda and the others? Where did they go?
Looking around, I noticed that the corners of the pentagram were empty. There was even a thin layer of dust on the floor, along with cobwebs. Had I really blinked and missed decades?
What was this Beggar doing here? Could he be the Puppet?
Unable to contain myself, I shouted, "Who are you?"
The Beggar looked at me pitifully: "Can't you tell? I'm just a beggar."
"Is that so? Are you asking for food or money?" I sneered.
"I want your life!" The Beggar continued to look at me pitifully: "Please have mercy and give me your life."
"Come and take it! Don't be shy!" I waved my hand at the Beggar.
The Beggar smiled gratefully: "Then I won't hold back."
He then slowly extended that broken bowl towards me.
I don't know what happened, but the Beggar who was about three meters away from me suddenly extended his hand, and the broken bowl in his hand was right in front of my eyes.
I was startled and quickly dodged to the side, simultaneously pulling out my Submachine Gun from the Mustard Seed Pendant and pulled the trigger at the Beggar.
Bang bang bang bang.
The bullets from the Submachine Gun pierced through the Beggar's chest, causing him to stumble backward until he vanished in a cloud of black smoke with a loud crash.
Hey, that was nothing.
I called out triumphantly to the black smoke, "Come on, keep going! After I fired so many bullets at you, you didn't even say thank you before leaving?"
The smoke began to change shape in the air, and with another flash of white light, a truly adorable boy appeared before me. He looked about four or five years old, with two curious black eyes staring at me: "Uncle, can you buy me some candy?"
Hmm, how could such a cute child appear in front of me? Just as I was about to reach out and pat his head, I suddenly remembered Fang Boda's words—never show mercy. I quickly reacted; this must be one of Puppet's tricks. I raised my Submachine Gun and sprayed bullets at him: "Be good, Uncle will treat you to some Peanut."
Bang bang bang bang.
The bullets from the Submachine Gun turned the boy into another cloud of smoke. The smoke laughed eerily in the air: "Are you even human? You're really a beast for being so ruthless to such a cute boy."
Seizing the opportunity, I switched to a Shotgun, pumped the action to chamber a round, and shouted loudly: "Transform, keep transforming! Let's see if I dare to be ruthless."
The black mist rolled again, and with another flash of white light, this time I was stunned because it was actually Fatty who appeared before me.
"Hey, how did you end up here?" Fatty looked at me in surprise. "How did I end up here?"
I was momentarily unsure whether this was really Fatty or an illusion he conjured up.
"How did I end up here?" Fatty continued to question me as he took a step closer.
"Don't move!" I raised the shotgun in my hand and gestured at Fatty.
Fatty looked at me in shock. "What's wrong with you?"
I felt a headache coming on and cursed a few times before loudly asking, "What is your wife's name?"
"An Ran."
"What is the name of Kong Xuan's temple?"
"Qifeng Temple!"
"What is Lingfeng's wife's name?"
"Li Xinyan."
"Which club did Lingfeng Gang get a membership card for?"
"Emperor Club."
Hmm, he answered so smoothly. Is this really Fatty? I lowered the gun and frowned. "How did you get here?"
Fatty scratched his head and walked towards me. "I don't know either. I was sleeping well, and suddenly there was a flash of white light, and now I'm here. Uh, where exactly is this place?"
I vaguely sensed something was off, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was. This Fatty should not be fake; he answered all my questions correctly, so how could he be an imposter? Oh right, why didn't Fatty call me Ghost Brother anymore?
Just as I thought that, Fatty suddenly said, "Ghost Brother, where exactly is this place?"
"This place is called the Five Absolute Formation..." As soon as I finished that sentence, I stopped speaking because I realized a possibility. The reason Fatty didn't call me Ghost Brother earlier was that he was still that shadow; he just knew my thoughts. When I asked him questions, I already had the answers in my mind, which is why he could provide the corresponding answers.
Thinking of this, I hurriedly asked, "Fatty, what is Kong Xuan's wife's name?" At the same time, my mind wandered with thoughts of Yang Mi, Lin Ling, Gao Yuan, Liu Yan, Azure Sky...
Sure enough, a look of surprise flashed across Fatty's face, followed by a cold sneer as he swung a punch towards my nose.
Damn, it was indeed a fake. I raised my gun and fired a shot. With a bang, Fatty transformed into thick smoke. I wasn't worried that the smoke would endlessly change form because each time I hit it, the smoke would dissipate slightly. I believed that after a few more shots, the smoke would completely vanish.
A flash of white light appeared, and Linzi stood in front of me. My raised gun immediately drooped. "Oh, why are you here?"
Linzi looked at me and nodded. "It seems you've completed your mission too."
I recounted what had just happened. Linzi laughed and said, "Old Beggar, the boy, and Fatty—yes, there have been three transformations already. This type of Puppet can only transform three times."
"So now we just wait for Fang Boda and the others?" I asked with a smile.
"Yes, hopefully they can pass," Linzi said with a grin.
"Of course!" I laughed heartily and then raised my gun to fire at Linzi. In the sound of the gunshot, Linzi instantly turned into a cloud of mist.
The mist rolled angrily and asked me in a hissing voice, "How did you know I was fake?"
"Fool, Linzi would never have such a silly grin," I replied disdainfully.
The smoke rolled in anger and began to change into various forms, but I saw through each one. As I continued to hit it, the smoke grew lighter. Finally, after it transformed into Obama and I shot him without hesitation in the head, there was a bright flash of light and the smoke completely disappeared, revealing Fang Boda and the others before me.
I finally breathed a sigh of relief. In fact, during the earlier illusion, my ability to repeatedly identify the smoke's transformations relied on one crucial judgment: it always appeared as just one person—unlike now when Fang Boda, Fang Zhongda, Fang Xiang, and Linzi all appeared before me at once.
Unlike me, each of them was severely injured; they were all battered and panting heavily. Fang Xiang had a ten-centimeter-long wound on his face. One could imagine how fierce their battle with the Puppet had been.
Seeing me unscathed and holding a shotgun in my hand surprised all four of them. Especially Fang Xiang; he looked frustrated and angry as if my lack of injuries made him feel extremely unbalanced.
Just as I was about to make a sarcastic remark, Fang Boda shouted loudly, "The Ancient Fierce Beast is about to reveal itself. Everyone get ready to try and take it down. Mr. Zhong, you're in the best shape right now, and with that powerful weapon in your hands, you'll lead the charge, okay?"
I glanced at Linzi, and she nodded at me. "I'm also severely injured and can't use Black Magic anymore."
"No problem," I replied. After all, taking down the Ancient Fierce Beast was my responsibility. It wasn't about my greatness; it was simply that, damn it, if I didn't kill it, it would definitely eat me.
The Circle in the center began to change colors again, shifting from moonlight white to light blue, then gradually deepening. When it turned a bluish-black color, a golden round beam of light shot down from the Flower Board. The beam was surrounded by various purple light dots swirling around. The golden beam became increasingly blinding, and the purple dots grew denser. With a flash of white light, both the golden beam and the purple dots suddenly vanished, revealing a chubby Yellow Dog in front of us, panting with its tongue out and wagging its tail excitedly at me.
What? This Ancient Fierce Beast is just a mutt? I looked at Linzi doubtfully. "Are you sure this is the Ancient Fierce Beast?"
"What are you standing there for? Shoot!" Fang Xiang shouted angrily.
If Linzi had told me to shoot, or even if Fang Boda or Fang Zhongda had asked me to shoot, I would have done it. But since Fang Xiang was yelling at me like that, I felt annoyed instead. Not only did I refuse to shoot, but I also crouched down and called out to the Yellow Dog, "Come here, come here and I'll give you something to eat."
A dog like this shouldn't have much killing power, right? Even if it attacked me, I could counterattack in time.
