Zhong Kui's Diary
The old monk had a cold smile at the corner of his mouth, sitting motionless on the stone bench, seemingly not taking my punch seriously at all. In fact, he didn't even show any intention of dodging; the contempt on his face was evident.
With a loud bang, I punched the old monk in the forehead, and to my surprise, he was knocked back three or four meters, crashing directly into the wall of the wooden house, which shook slightly from the impact.
Hmm, was this old monk pretending? First acting as if he were severely injured, and when I became complacent, he splashed cold water on me. I'm such a fool; I've played this kind of trick before, specifically to mock and undermine my opponents.
Go ahead and keep acting. Look at your pained expression; you’re doing quite well. Yo Xue, you're even bleeding from the corner of your mouth. If you were in the entertainment industry, you'd be a skilled performer.
I watched coldly as the old monk leaned against the wall, one hand covering his forehead while the other wiped away the blood. Meanwhile, I was contemplating whether to expose his act.
After more than a minute of heavy breathing, the old monk finally took a few deep breaths and dejectedly said, “In my lifetime as Ten Directions, I never expected to fall into such a predicament. I truly did not foresee that someone like you with a Yin-Yang Physique would possess Devouring Energy.”
Hmm, what does he mean by that?
In my anger earlier, I had indeed used Devouring Energy, but it was unintentional; I hadn’t thought it would be of much use. Seeing him in such a state now made me wonder if my Devouring Energy could really harm him. Was he not acting but genuinely hurt? This thought brought me some secret delight: “So you’re Ten Directions, what do you mean by that?”
“I have been severely injured by your punch containing Devouring Energy, and all my cultivation has been reduced to nothing.” Ten Directions spat out another mouthful of blood and said mournfully, “Can you tell me who you are?”
The once arrogant Stupid Donkey suddenly became humble; this change truly raised suspicions in my heart. I couldn't help but cough lightly: “My name is Zhong Zhengnan.” To test whether he was pretending, I added, “Zhong is Zhong as in your sister’s Zhong, Zheng is Zheng as in your sister’s Zheng, and Nan is Nan as in your sister’s Nan.”
“Mr. Zhong, can you tell me why you possess Devouring Energy?” Unexpectedly, Ten Directions showed no anger at all; instead, he looked at me with pleading eyes: “Just consider it fulfilling an old man's last wish.”
“Last wish?” I repeated in surprise.
“Yes, the Devouring Energy contained in your punch just now is the supreme energy in our Underworld. In a moment of carelessness, I was struck in the forehead by your punch; naturally, death is not far off.” Ten Directions said dejectedly.
If the Ten Directions Bald Donkey is real, that would be incredibly delightful. I smiled as I looked at Ten Directions and said, "So, you are also a Spirit?"
"Yes," Ten Directions Monk nodded sadly.
"As far as I know, there are only six types of Spirits: Dual-Faced Phantom, Deceptive Spirit, Purple Fiend Spirit, Shadow Phantom, Devouring Soul, and Frenzied Spirit. Which type are you?" I asked casually.
"I am a Deceptive Spirit."
"But aren't Spirits supposed to live in groups of six? Why are you the only one here?"
"Let's not talk about that; more is just tears. I'm just an abandoned child. Mr. Zhong, can we skip this for now? Can you tell me about yourself? I'm afraid I won't last much longer," Ten Directions said, his face pale and breathing heavily.
"Oh, I see. But how do I know if you're telling the truth?" I squinted at Ten Directions, trying to read his expression while buying time. If he wasn't lying to me, well, dragging him along wouldn't hurt.
"I swear!" Ten Directions earnestly raised three fingers.
"What good is your oath unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless you let me shoot you again." I said with a mischievous smile. "If you're acting, then getting shot shouldn't be a problem."
"I'm really not acting. I've lost my powers; getting shot would kill me," Ten Directions said with a mournful expression.
"Don't worry; I won't aim for your head," I replied seriously.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," I replied with a smile, but inwardly I was thinking, Damn, it's a miracle I haven't blown your head off yet.
The Ten Directions Monk looked at the gun barrel I was slowly raising, but a strange smile appeared on his face. "Mr. Zhong, let me be honest with you. Without me lifting the seal of Reincarnation, you won't be able to return to your world."
I had already aimed the gun at the Ten Directions Monk's face, and hearing him say this made me lower the barrel in surprise. "What do you mean?"
"Do you think you're still in your own time? To tell you the truth, it's now the third year of the Zhenguan era in the Tang Dynasty, which is the time when Yu Qi and I are living." Blood seeped from the corner of the Ten Directions Monk's mouth, and he wiped it with his sleeve. "Maybe you don't believe me, so let me ask you: in your time, was the sky this blue? Was the grass this green?"
Looking around, indeed, the sky was an unblemished blue, and the trees were lush and vibrant. Such a scene would be impossible in modern times. As if fearing I wouldn't believe him, the Ten Directions Monk pointed to a wooden house. "You can go inside and take a look."
Skeptically glancing at the Ten Directions Monk, I circled around inside the wooden house. Although I wasn't very familiar with artifacts, I could tell that everything inside had a Tang Dynasty style. Shaking my head, I said, "Even though everything here resembles Tang Dynasty style, based on age alone, these are clearly things from recent years; they definitely don't have over a thousand years of history."
The Ten Directions Monk smiled bitterly. "Mr. Zhong, as I just said, we are currently in the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty. Things from the Tang Dynasty placed in that era would naturally be recent items; how could they possibly have over a thousand years of history?"
Uh, that's true. I rubbed my nose to hide my embarrassment. If that's the case, then I might really have crossed over to the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty. Not wanting to shoot at him anymore, I said gloomily, "So how can I go back?"
"First tell me how you came to possess Devouring Energy," the Ten Directions Monk said as he spat out another mouthful of blood, looking like he was on the brink of death.
I recounted how during my time in Moon City’s Abandoned Building, Devouring Soul had possessed Fatty and how my head had been injured by someone else’s blow. This caused Devouring Soul not to form a vacuum within me and ultimately merged with my Yin-Yang Energy.
After listening, the Ten Directions Monk looked incredulous and muttered to himself, "I never expected it to be like this; I never imagined it would turn out this way. This is truly unbelievable."
"Alright, now you can tell me how I can go back," I reminded him loudly.
"Going back?" Ten Directions suddenly smiled strangely. "You actually want to go back?"
Seeing that kind of smile from Ten Directions, I had a vague sense of foreboding. Damn, this guy isn't planning something weird, is he?
Ten Directions slowly stood up from the corner, casually wiped his mouth, and the bloodstains at the corner of his lips instantly vanished. His face no longer bore the look of someone on the brink of death; instead, his eyes sparkled with brilliance, and he wore a mocking expression, returning to his previous arrogant demeanor.
Damn, this guy was indeed tricking me.
In an instant, I was too lazy to even curse at him and simply crossed my arms. "What exactly do you want?"
"To be honest with you, at the moment you struck me, I was indeed hurt by your Devouring Energy. However, since you don't know how to use the Devour ability at all, the damage you caused wasn't significant," Ten Directions chuckled.
"Then why are you putting on such a show? Is it interesting?" I retorted angrily.
"Because I'm very interested in your Devouring Energy. I want to know how you obtained it and see if I can completely replicate it and take it for myself." A strong sense of envy and jealousy appeared on Ten Directions' face. "I never expected that our Spirit clan still has Devouring Energy existing in this world. If I could possess such energy... Oh... oh yeah... it would be incredible..."
Watching Ten Directions' excited expression, I couldn't help but exclaim in surprise, "Hey, have you lost your mind?"
Ten Directions blushed and laughed. "Damn, just thinking about it gets me excited."
Crazy!
At the same time, an uneasy feeling rose in my heart, and I quickly asked, "Are you really envious of the energy I have?"
"Of course! Why wouldn't I be?" Ten Directions looked at me with a grin, making a clicking sound with his mouth as if he were a chef contemplating where to cut into a plucked chicken.
It seems this guy intends to extract the energy from me, but how is he going to do that? Is he going to stick a straw into my head and take a few sips now and then?
Just as I was feeling frustrated, Ten Directions suddenly turned pale. He quickly took out a pill from his pocket and swallowed it in front of me. After three or four seconds, his complexion returned to normal. Taking a deep breath, Ten Directions smiled and said, "Sorry, I'm getting old and need to supplement my calcium regularly."
Motherfucker, did you just eat a calcium tablet? I snorted and remained silent.
Ten Directions clapped his hands together. "Alright, I've figured out what's going on with the Devouring Energy inside you. Next, I will extract your Devouring Energy... Well, first let me share my plan with you. Since the Devouring Energy in your body isn't mature enough yet, I need to help it ripen."
"What do you mean?" I was completely confused and had no idea what Ten Directions was up to.
"I will arrange for you to continue your Reincarnation with Yu Qi to enhance your Devouring Energy. Of course, this time I will modify the settings for the Reincarnation; you won't be doing search missions anymore but will instead enter an upgrade Pass mode."
"Upgrade Pass mode?"
"You've played Online Games before, right? When you reach a certain Level, you can enter a new map. My Reincarnation works similarly; only after passing all the levels can you terminate the Reincarnation." Ten Directions Monk smiled and said, "By then, when your energy matures, I'll come back to reap the fruits."
