Zhong Kui's Diary
As Linzi once again pulled the map, I was astonished to see myself in the image, sitting on the bed with a bewildered expression, while Linzi stood beside me with a smile.
I reached up to touch my nose, and the version of me in the image did the same. I scratched my scalp, and again, the image mirrored my actions. I sighed and said, "Linzi, what does this mean?"
Linzi replied with a smile, "This is a real-time view of Black Wind Village. I'm taking you to see someone."
"Who?" I had no idea what Linzi was up to.
Linzi didn't answer. With a few gestures of his right hand in the air, the map began to move as if a camera was flying through the sky. Then, I saw various scenes:
Fatty was playing rock-paper-scissors with Sugar Doll...
About ten members of the Black Guk Tribe were arguing passionately in the hall, their words flying as they gestured wildly...
In one room, several women were crying, occasionally someone would pull out their phone and shake it on WeChat...
In the kitchen, a chef was chopping vegetables, occasionally adjusting his pants before continuing to chop...
In the yard, a servant was chopping firewood while cursing towards the woodshed...
Inside the woodshed, Supervisor was engaging in some sort of intimate act with a maid...
The scene then swept past a massive Copper Door guarded by several Black-clad Men. Behind the door was an extremely long corridor that led to a vast cavern. The cavern was brightly lit, but aside from a single White Jade Statue, there was no one else present.
"This is the forbidden area of the Black Guk Tribe. No one can enter except for the Chief," Linzi said solemnly.
"You said you were going to show me someone, right?" I looked around but saw no one in the cave.
Linzi adjusted the image to focus on the statue and zoomed in. As I saw the face of the statue, I couldn't help but gasp in surprise; the statue was actually Linzi.
"Linzi, what does this mean?" I pointed at the statue in the image and asked, "How did you get such a large statue in this cave?"
"Take a closer look," Linzi said as she zoomed in again, stopping at the hairline of the statue.
The craftsmanship of the statue was exceptionally fine; I could even see individual strands of hair. But so what? I had seen someone carve a painting on a grain of rice before... Just as I was about to ask Linzi, I suddenly noticed a notch at the hairline. The marks of this notch looked quite old; it must have taken at least a hundred years for such an aged color to appear.
"Wow, this statue looks quite ancient; it should be several hundred years old," I remarked in astonishment.
"To be precise, it has a history of six hundred and three years," Linzi replied slowly.
"Who is this person?" I scratched my head. "She looks just like you!"
"She is the great hero who unified the Guk Tribe six hundred years ago, Yurou Lin," Linzi said with a faint smile.
"Yurou Lin? That's strange; not only does this statue look exactly like you, but her name is also the same," I exclaimed in admiration.
"Zheng Nan, why don't you believe that I am Yurou Lin from six hundred years ago?" Linzi said with a wry smile as she waved her hand, causing the image to disappear.
To be honest, after seeing this statue, I already believed that Linzi wasn't lying to me. I scratched my head and asked, "Then what about your experience with Reincarnation?"
"Six hundred years ago, although I unified the Guk Tribe, I didn't have time to integrate all the major branches before dying from exhaustion. Perhaps my obsession with merging the four major branches caused my soul to remain intact, and I ended up reincarnating into a newborn girl from the Guk Tribe," Linzi sighed.
"Is the soul not scattered?" I said, slightly surprised as I pulled out a cigarette and lit it.
There have been many reports in the newspapers about soul transfer and possession. Some people who have never left their village can suddenly know everything happening to another person miles away; others who have never been to school can suddenly speak a foreign language fluently, even a difficult dialect... There were even enthusiasts who conducted experiments by placing a dying person on an extremely precise electronic scale, and at the moment of death, the scale surprisingly registered a decrease of several milligrams.
Hearing Linzi say that her soul was not scattered was surprising but not particularly strange. "This is just possession; it has nothing to do with Reincarnation, right?"
Linzi shook her head. "Just listen to me first."
I nodded with a smile. "You, you."
A hint of helplessness crossed Linzi's face. "The baby I possessed couldn't handle my strong spiritual power and died before reaching three years old. After that, I lost consciousness. When I regained consciousness, it was already fifty years later, and at that moment, I found myself as the mother of three children."
I took a deep drag from my cigarette; this situation really couldn't be explained by mere possession.
"This time, although I lived into my sixties, I had no energy left in me. Not only could I not unify the Guk Tribe, but even killing a chicken became difficult. I could only pass away weakly. It wasn't until thirty years later that I was reincarnated in the home of a hunter on Daihei Mountain..." Linzi said solemnly.
Next, she recounted several more experiences of reincarnation. It became clear that such experiences could no longer be explained by possession; only Reincarnation could account for them.
"Three months ago, a wave of energy awakened me from this woman's body. I discovered that this body had excellent attributes and could fully accommodate my spiritual power and energy. Overjoyed, I was preparing to start my grand unification plan when unexpectedly, I encountered Ten Directions Monk. Before I could react, he captured me into the Thirty-Three Caves Formation to deal with you. On one hand, I wasn't his opponent; on the other hand, I wanted to understand the mysteries of Reincarnation. So, I simply concealed my strength and experienced the Reincarnation within the formation until just now when I took action while he was distracted absorbing your energy."
Three months ago? That should have been when Grandma Song used the Vedic Formation. It seems that due to the wave of energy, her soul was awakened. I smiled and said, "If only you had killed Ten Directions Monk directly back then."
"There are no pills for regret in this world," Linzi replied with a smile, though there was an undercurrent of worry in her expression. "What I'm most concerned about now is that Ten Directions Monk will retaliate against our Guk Tribe. If that's the case, our tribe might face total annihilation."
"That seems unlikely," I reassured her.
"How can you be so sure?" Linzi looked at me suspiciously.
"From what I understand about Demons, although they regard human life as worthless, they would never do something meaningless. You see, if it benefits them, they wouldn't hesitate to kill thousands of humans, but if it doesn't benefit them, even if you begged them to kill, they wouldn't bother." I smiled.
"I hope that's true," Linzi said, showing a weary expression. "Honestly, after experiencing the Reincarnation of the Ten Directions Monk hundreds of times, I'm quite tired. The grand plan that once weighed heavily on my heart has lightened considerably. Do you know what I want to do the most right now?"
"What is it?"
"I just want to find a place to rest for a while." Linzi took a deep breath and smiled. "Alright, after talking with you so much, I feel much lighter."
"Weren't you planning to find a place to rest?" I said with a smile. "How about coming with me to Star City for a while?"
"Star City?"
"Yes, Star City!"
Linzi pondered for a while. "For the past six hundred years, no matter how many times I've reincarnated, I've always lived around Daihei Mountain. Perhaps it's time for me to change my surroundings for a while. Fine, you all go ahead; I'll catch up with you after I handle some matters."
"What else is there to handle? The Guk Tribe can still function without you."
"I just can't let it go. What if that Ten Directions Monk comes back for revenge?" Linzi smiled calmly. "You all head back first; maybe in three or five months, I'll come find you."
"Alright, it's a deal."
After leaving my contact information, I stepped out and greeted Fatty. We rested for a bit longer until Fatty's health improved enough before we bid farewell to Linzi.
Two days later, we returned to Star City and parted ways with Fatty. Thanks to the fact that Sugar Doll could be stored in the Mustard Seed Pendant, we avoided the hassle of security checks on the way.
Once home, I introduced Sugar Doll to Guo Er and Qing Cheng, while I took out my phone to call Lou Wei and briefly explained the situation. Lou Wei clicked his tongue a couple of times, saying he would inform me when he had more updates.
Upon learning that this chubby dog was an ancient fierce deity, Guo Er and Qing Cheng were initially a bit resistant. However, they quickly realized that this plump dog was not fierce at all but rather adorable. They rushed to hold it in their arms, and seeing Sugar Doll resting its head on Guo Er's chest with a contented expression made me chuckle. Damn, this creature must have learned bad habits from Fatty; indeed, it takes three years to learn good things but only a short time to learn bad ones.
After I shared the story about Linzi, both of them sighed. Guo Er lamented Linzi's experiences with Reincarnation, while Qing Cheng expressed admiration for Linzi's responsibility in unifying the Guk Tribe.
Sugar Doll also sighed, "Such a beautiful girl, yet you didn't bring her back. What a waste."
...
When Zhao Bingbing learned I was back, she called me to invite me for dinner as an apology. I couldn't refuse, so I asked for the location and took Sugar Doll with me.
Although Guo Er and Qing Cheng didn't dislike Zhao Bingbing, they certainly weren't fond of her either and definitely wouldn't join us for dinner. As for Sugar Doll, it was curious about everything and insisted on coming along to see the world. The two girls playfully instructed Sugar Doll that if it saw me being affectionate with Zhao Bingbing, it should hurry back and report. They promised rewards like imported sardines if that happened. Watching Sugar Doll wag its tail excitedly made my head ache. Damn, this fellow is both lecherous and gluttonous; where did the integrity of an Ancient Spirit Beast go?
