Zhong Kui's Diary
Star City, midsummer.
The sun blazed fiercely.
The entire city was enveloped in an unbearable heat.
Except for the super shopping malls, all the storefronts along the streets had their glass doors tightly shut, with signs hanging at the entrances that read "Open for Business, Air Conditioning Available." In such heat, no one dared to enter a shop without air conditioning.
However, there were exceptions. For instance, at a wholesale market on Chunfeng Road, Qingxiu District, there was a storefront with its glass door wide open.
From a distance, the sign above read "Possible Company," and at the entrance stood a display rack. At the top of the display was a slogan—"Nothing is Impossible!" Below it was a line of smaller text—"No matter what difficulties you face, we can help you."
Further down were the main services offered: private detective, rental partner, homework writing, toilet unclogging...
Finally, there were contact details: General Manager Zhong Zhengnan, phone number 18-..., Business Director Ding Shaocheng, phone number 19--...
The storefront was neither large nor small, about thirty square meters. Inside, the furnishings were simple. Against the back wall stood an office desk, in front of which was a Coffee Table. Surrounding the Coffee Table was a set of fabric sofas. In addition, there was a filing cabinet and a standing oscillating fan that blew steadily, occasionally emitting squeaks and rattles.
On the office desk were two nameplates with white backgrounds and red letters; one read "General Manager," and the other read "Business Director," placed at either end of the desk. I sat behind one nameplate while Fatty sat behind the other. Sugar Doll lay under the desk, sleeping soundly on her back.
"I'm Fatty, are you sure we’re not turning on the air conditioning?" I asked with a smile.
"Come on, don't we need to save costs? We have to present ourselves as a startup company!" Fatty wiped the sweat from his face, shifted his chair closer to the fan, and rolled up his shirt sleeves to reveal his sagging pectoral muscles. Judging by his posture, he looked like he wanted to shove his entire body into the fan.
"Ha ha, there's no need to treat yourself like that. After all, we captured the Icebound Expanse and earned a reward of 180 yuan!" With that, I opened the drawer and took out an account book. "By the way, let me jot this down."
"Damn, it's not that he's doing well, but when it comes to me, I just get angry. And he calls himself a brother? Pfft! He even tried to haggle with me, starting at thirty thousand and then cutting it down to one thousand three hundred and eighty. Damn, even if you sell the Icebound Expanse like pork, it wouldn't go for this little money! The most outrageous part is that this guy even asked for a receipt. Damn, my friendship with him has reached its end!" At this point, Fatty's face trembled with excitement.
I chuckled and wrote in the account book: August 1st, assisted Lingfeng in capturing Icebound Expanse, received a reward of 180 yuan.
In this account book, there were other records as well:
August 18th, impersonated Qin Shishi's new boyfriend and severely threatened her ex-boyfriend, received a payment of 10 yuan.
August 11th, impersonated Ma Bao's cousin and scared his deskmate at Spring Breeze Academy, received a payment of 0 yuan. Note: Additionally, there is another 0 yuan; Ma Bao is paying in installments, ten months to pay off.
July 5th, helped Old Li investigate his wife's infidelity; after investigation, found it was purely fabricated. Old Li was very happy and treated us to fast food.
...
Closing the account book, I tossed a cigarette to Fatty, lit one for myself and took a long drag. "No matter what, this first income over a thousand is worth celebrating. What should we eat later? Braised pork ribs or mushroom chicken or spicy beef instant noodles? You can choose any of these flavors."
Fatty tapped the table with the cigarette in hand and frowned. "Ghost Brother, can we find that Dark Overlord named Kui by doing this?"
"I can't be sure if we'll find him or not, but we have to try," I replied with a bitter smile.
It had been several months since we took down the Dark Demon King Chaos. During this time, there had been no news about other Dark Overlords, which worried me greatly. I didn't know when those Dark Overlords would break through. It wasn't until half a month ago that Lou Wei came to me with a serious expression, saying he had discovered traces of the Dark Demon King Kui. At that time, I felt frustrated; if you found something, just go straight for it instead of making it so mysterious.
Lou Wei coldly told me he wasn't sure who Kui really was; he only knew it was related to someone close to the celebrity Li Haifeng from Star City. And counting Li Haifeng's family along with security guards, housekeepers, gardeners, servants, drivers and so on, there were dozens of people involved. That wasn't even counting what would happen if you included people from Haifeng Group's dozens of companies; it would amount to several thousand individuals.
The most important point is that Kui is best at concealing its whereabouts. Even with Lou Wei's abilities, it can only determine that Kui is among these thousands of people, but who exactly can only be confirmed once Kui uses its Spell. In Lou Wei's words, it would be easier to just eliminate all these thousands of people, but he knows I wouldn't agree to that, so he came to ask me in order to continue our cooperation.
According to him, if I had no objections, he could take action.
Of course, I had objections; we were talking about thousands of people.
Reluctantly, I called Fatty Kong Xuan, Lingfeng, and others to discuss countermeasures. We ultimately decided to go undercover and infiltrate the Li Family to find Kui's whereabouts. Establishing this company and capturing Icebound Expanse was merely a warm-up exercise for infiltrating the Li Family.
Kong Xuan was quite dismissive of this plan. "Come on, it's just going undercover in a wealthy family. Do you really need to set up a whole company for that? And why get involved with the gang? Do you think I haven't seen classic undercover films like Tang Bohu Meets Autumn Fragrance?"
Lingfeng provided three points of reasoning. First, Li Haifeng prides himself on being orthodox and never collaborates with unsavory characters; having a company background would make it easier to enter the Li Family. Second, Li Haifeng's brother, Li Haitao, was crippled by Icebound Expanse when they severed his tendons; helping the police capture Icebound Expanse would naturally earn us some points. Third, if we directly confronted Li Haifeng about it, it would surely cause panic and Kui might notice and escape, making it even harder to find it later.
Kong Xuan wanted to say something else but was quickly overwhelmed by us and beaten up. "Damn it! If you can't come up with a solution, at least don't nitpick. Don't you realize you no longer have any magic?"
Next, we devised a complete plan. Li Haifeng has a trusted aide named Diao Qi who handles various trivial matters for him. To Li Haifeng, Diao Qi is like toilet paper—worthless but extremely important. Our first step in the plan was to capture Diao Qi. Used to not being burdened by trivial matters, Li Haifeng would definitely look for someone to replace Diao Qi. At that point, we would proceed with the second step: helping the Li Family handle some minor tasks to gain Li Haifeng's approval. Only with his endorsement could we infiltrate the Li Family to search for Kui.
Setting up the company was straightforward since I already owned one; I just needed to change the name. However, capturing Icebound Expanse took considerable effort. With Tang Zian's help and some fortunate coincidences, we found a lead on Scar Liu. We went undercover in prison and collaborated with Scar Liu to escape before finally capturing Icebound Expanse.
According to the plan, someone should have contacted Li Haifeng's wife, Tang Liping, by now and casually revealed our situation so we could enter the Li Family's radar. But there hadn't been any phone calls yet; it was quite frustrating.
Just as I was idly playing on my phone, it rang.
As soon as I answered, Lingfeng hurriedly said, "Aunt Zheng's mission has been completed; Tang Liping should be almost at your company's entrance."
"Damn it! Why are you only calling now?" I complained.
"Aunt Zheng, my phone bill is overdue. I just paid it and they told me," Lingfeng said with a smile before hanging up the phone.
Just as I reminded Fatty to pay attention to his image, a woman in her forties with curly hair walked in. She looked quite elegant, but as soon as she entered, she frowned and fanned herself with her hand at her neck, saying, "It's so hot! You guys haven't turned on the air conditioning?"
I quickly stood up, extinguishing the cigarette in my hand while grabbing the remote control to turn on the air conditioning. I smiled and said, "Yes, we do have air conditioning. We just opened the door and haven't had a chance to turn it on yet. May I ask what brings you here, miss?"
The curly-haired woman glanced at her Vacheron Constantin watch and remarked, "You just opened? It's already eleven o'clock."
"I received a job this morning and just got back," Fatty said with a warm smile as he closed the glass door, poured a glass of water, and invited the woman, "Please have a seat and enjoy some water."
The woman sat down and asked, "So, what kind of work do you take on?"
I grinned and nodded, "Well, aside from not taking jobs that involve picking stars from the sky, we take on all sorts of work."
Upon hearing this, the woman laughed, "What if I asked you to commit murder?"
"You must be joking! Just looking at you shows that you have a kind heart; how could you possibly ask us to do something like that?" Fatty replied with a broad smile that lit up his face.
"Enough joking around. I actually have a job for you," the woman said, her expression turning serious.
"I haven't asked for your name yet. I'm Zhong Zhengnan," I introduced myself while pointing to Fatty. "This is my partner Ding Shaocheng."
The woman took out two business cards from her handbag and handed them to us. As I received the cards, I noticed they were exquisitely crafted and high-end—made of transparent PV material with silver foil lettering, and there was even a circle of silk embroidery around the edges.
These business cards were truly impressive!
The content of the business card was simple: Tang Liping, followed by a string of mobile numbers. It seemed she was Li Haifeng's wife.
"Sister Tang, hello. How can I assist you?" I carefully put away the business card, not because it was exquisite, but as a sign of respect to show that I valued her.
"Then I'll be straightforward," the curly-haired woman Tang Liping said. "I have a daughter named Li Meng'er, who is twenty-two this year. She had a boyfriend during college, and they were together for a year. Later, due to certain reasons, they broke up."
At this point, Tang Liping paused to take a sip of water and looked at me in silence.
I was somewhat taken aback. "And then?"
"You won't leak customer privacy, will you?" Tang Liping asked thoughtfully.
"How could we?" Fatty interjected, thumping his chest loudly. "Even if someone hung me up and beat me, offering thirty taels of gold and five... five beauties, I absolutely wouldn't."
Tang Liping chuckled lightly before continuing, "Now, that bastard ex-boyfriend of hers is bothering my daughter again. What I need you to do is simple: pretend to be my daughter's new boyfriend and make that jerk back off."
Even if Tang Liping hadn't said anything, I already understood the situation. Our second step in the plan was to help handle these trivial matters; we were already well aware of the trouble her daughter was facing.
"We'll take care of this for you. After all, we have a successful case under our belt," Fatty said again, patting his chest. "Last time with that person, Qin Shi..."
Hearing Fatty say this, I quickly cleared my throat and inwardly cursed him. Just moments ago he claimed he wouldn't leak customer privacy, and now within ten seconds he was bringing up past clients' issues. Couldn't he keep his mouth shut?
Fatty quickly realized his mistake and changed his tune: "Qin Shi Mingyue Han Shi Guan; this matter isn't difficult at all. Don't worry, with our Boss Zhong on the case, your daughter's ex-boyfriend will definitely be made to feel ashamed and retreat."
Tang Liping chuckled: "You really know how to talk, Fatty. Don't hide it; Sister Zheng, Qin Shishi's mother, works part-time at my house. She told me that you helped scare off her ex-boyfriend, which is how I found out about your company." After saying this, Tang Liping turned to assess me and nodded. "You look decent enough, but your outfit is a bit inappropriate; you'll need to buy some higher-end clothes."
I quickly changed the subject, "Sister Tang, let's talk about the price first. It's clear that your family is quite well-off, and Miss Li Meng'er must be a refined young lady. For a man to have been able to associate with her for a year, he should be quite exceptional. Because of this, the task has a bit of difficulty, so what do you think about this amount?"
With that, I held up three fingers.
"Alright! Thirty thousand it is." Tang Liping directly pulled out a stack of cash from her handbag. "You can take this ten thousand as a deposit, and the remaining amount will be paid once the job is done. Now, let me tell you about my daughter's situation. As for that scoundrel's situation, I'll find someone to get you detailed information in the next couple of days."
I looked at Tang Liping in disbelief, not really hearing the latter part of her sentence. Honestly, I only wanted to quote three thousand.
Seeing me silent, Tang Liping said unhappily, "What's wrong? Do you think it's too little? Do you want thirty thousand instead? It's not like I'm asking you to cripple him; thirty thousand is already quite generous. So tell me, are you going to take this job or not?"
"Yes!" I finally came back to my senses and answered decisively.
After listening to Tang Liping explain the situation and seeing her off at the door, I returned and shook the stack of cash in my hand, creating a red illusion as I laughed, "If I had known this money was so easy to make, we wouldn't have had to go through all that trouble!"
