Zhong Kui's Diary
I quickly pushed through the greenery and saw a tall figure hurrying away, around six feet tall, dressed in the uniform of Cang Hai Group.
"Hey!" I shouted loudly.
The tall man paused for a moment, turned to glance at me, and I thought he would recognize me. To my surprise, he was wearing a mask that covered his entire face.
Upon seeing me, he shuddered and took off running. I was immediately filled with suspicion and chased after him.
I initially thought that my body, enhanced by Devouring Energy, would easily catch up to him. However, I soon realized that this person was incredibly fast, and his running style was quite professional, as if he had been an athlete before joining Cang Hai Group.
Turning down a corridor, I found myself outside the spirit hall of Chukai. Besides a dozen or so Taoists, there were dozens of Cang Hai Group employees bustling around. When they saw us rushing towards each other, they were momentarily stunned before they all rushed forward to block me, asking in unison, "What happened, Daoist Master?"
Taking advantage of the commotion, the tall man slipped through the spirit hall and disappeared in an instant.
Knowing I couldn't catch up to him anymore, I glanced at the employees blocking my way and didn't bother blaming them. It's human nature to help friends over strangers. However, I felt a wicked sense of humor rise within me. I chuckled and said, "I was just in the bathroom when the stall door broke. I had to hold it shut with my hands, but this guy suddenly yanked it open. Caught off guard, I fell to the ground without even wiping—damn! I ended up fighting him right there. By the way, you all work for the same group; do you know who this person is?"
Upon hearing this, the Cang Hai Group employees immediately covered their noses and scattered like birds. I grabbed one employee and asked who the tall man was. The employee looked at me with disdain and impatiently replied, "In our company, there are at least eighty men of that height. Without seeing his face, we can't confirm who he is."
His response only made me more frustrated. Deciding to press on, I was about to ask him if he had eaten when Fatty walked over with a smile: "Brother, hurry up and change."
I followed Fatty to the backyard and recounted what had just happened. Fatty looked surprised: "I've always had excellent eyesight and you've got great hearing; both are certified by IS. Since you heard this person's voice, you must have some idea of who he is."
I frowned and said, "I really can't remember when I've interacted with anyone from Cang Hai Group."
Fatty chuckled: "Maybe when you spoke to him, you didn't realize he was an employee of Cang Hai Group."
I nodded in agreement with Fatty's statement and laughed: "Well, this guy is also six feet tall; besides Lingfeng, there's only..." At this point, a flash of realization struck me: "Wait! I remember who this person is."
"Who?"
"Chukai!"
"Chukai?" Fatty furrowed his brow, "Isn't he already turned into mush?"
I pondered for a while before slowly saying, "I have a vague idea of the truth now; I need to find Chu Cang Hai to verify it."
After sharing my guess with Fatty, we confirmed and inspired each other, both feeling it was quite possible. We asked a Taoist priest at Lingxu Temple and found Chu Cang Hai and his wife in a side room. When we knocked and entered, Chu Cang Hai frowned upon seeing us, "What brings you here, Daoists?"
"We're not Daoists," I casually closed the door behind us.
"Then who are you?" Chu Cang Hai snapped.
"Mr. Chu, who I am isn't important; what's important is that I already know the truth of the matter."
"What truth?" Chu Cang Hai looked at me without changing his expression, but behind him, Chen Yu-Rong's face slightly changed.
I didn't bother to beat around the bush and directly stated my hypothesis: "Chukai is not dead; someone else jumped off the building. What you did was merely to force Li Haifeng to hand over that 15% stake."
Chen Yu-Rong gasped softly, gripping Chu Cang Hai's arm tightly, while Chu Cang Hai's eyes flashed with intensity; he neither confirmed nor denied it but asked in a deep voice, "What evidence do you have?"
"Evidence?" I pulled out my phone and showed them a photo, pointing at Chukai's arm in the picture: "After you threw the fake Chukai downstairs, you suddenly remembered that I had once made a cut on his arm and hurriedly patched it up on-site. By the time we arrived, there was already a wound on his arm. In such a bloody mess, we couldn't tell when this wound occurred. However, unfortunately, a good Samaritan driver took a photo and uploaded it to WeChat right away."
Chu Cang Hai glanced at my phone and snorted coldly without saying anything.
"Actually, I should have thought of this earlier. No matter who it is, if there's a five-centimeter-long wound on their arm, they would immediately go to the hospital for stitches. Even if they didn't get stitches, they would at least put on a Band-Aid. But the wound on Chukai's arm was just exposed like that; it was unreasonable that I didn't notice it at the time." I shook my head and smiled: "Better late than never. The only thing I can't figure out now is why Dongfang Xiao was present at the scene."
After a while of fluctuating expressions on Chu Cang Hai's face, he finally smiled bitterly and said, "Ghost Brother truly lives up to his name; you've seen through it all. Mark, come out."
A person walked out from within the room, dressed in an employee uniform from Canghai and wearing a large mask. It was the tall man I had lost track of earlier. When he removed his mask, Chukai's handsome face appeared.
"Now you can tell me what's going on, right?" I said with a smile.
Chukai's face broke into a sunny smile. "Ghost Brother, this is a long story, but if you're willing to wait two minutes, it will be much simpler for me to explain."
"Hey, why are you acting so smug as a villain?" Fatty snorted. "I can't stand villains who are more handsome than me."
I chuckled and said, "Waiting two minutes is no big deal; it's just a chance to smoke." With that, I took out my cigarettes and lit one up with Fatty. Of course, being a person of quality, I asked them if they smoked as well, but they both shook their heads in refusal.
If you don't even smoke, what are you making all that money for? For health treatment?
Chukai took out his phone and made a call. From his tone, it seemed to be the same person who had spoken to him earlier.
After hanging up the phone for a while, the door creaked open, and someone walked in. The moment I saw this person, both Fatty and I exclaimed in surprise; it was Li Meng'er.
Li Meng'er walked over to Chukai, nestled into his embrace, and smiled at me. Seeing this scene, I vaguely understood the answer.
"I was originally in love with Li Meng'er, but after Uncle Li intervened, I was greatly confused. So I asked Father for the reason. Father was furious and strictly ordered me not to associate with Li Meng'er. Naturally, I refused and we had a big fight; I threatened to run away from home. In the end, Father had no choice but to tell me about their grievances. Here's how it goes..." Chukai then recounted the enmity between Li Haifeng, Chu Cang Hai, and Dongfang Ao, which was roughly the same as what Li Haifeng had told me. However, in his version, it was Chu Cang Hai who believed that Li Haifeng had killed Dongfang Ao and vowed revenge.
Chukai shifted his tone: "But I didn't believe in fate and swore to end the previous generation's grievances in our hands. So I found Dongfang Xiao..."
"Wait." I interrupted Chukai. "Theoretically speaking, resolving this grudge between you and Li Meng'er shouldn't be difficult. But how would Dongfang Xiao agree? I've also heard this story from Li Haifeng; in his version, your father is the one pulling the strings..."
"He's talking nonsense!" The usually calm Chu Cang Hai suddenly exploded with rage upon hearing my words. "He is the real murderer! He could even betray a brother of many years; is he even human?"
"We won't discuss who the murderer is for now." I smiled and continued speaking to Chukai: "One thing is certain: either your father or Li Haifeng is the murderer. There must be one among them responsible for killing your father; how could Dongfang Xiao possibly agree to resolve this grudge with you?"
"In fact, I've already found out who designed the murder of Uncle Dong," Chukai said slowly.
"Oh? Who is it? Could it be Jin Manyuan?" I casually tossed my cigarette butt on the ground and remarked.
"That's right, it's Jin Manyuan," Chukai said slowly.
"What?" The one who exclaimed in surprise was actually Chu Cang Hai: "Mark, what nonsense are you talking about? I'm willing to cooperate with your act mainly to bring down Li Haifeng, that Wolf-Hearted and Dog-Livered guy. Even if you have issues with Meng'er, I won't stop you, as long as Li Haifeng gets what he deserves. But now you're saying it's Jin Manyuan who sent someone to frame your Uncle Dong. Where did you get this information?"
"Dad, please let me finish," Chukai said with a bitter smile.
"You, you." Chu Cang Hai quickly waved his hand, signaling Chukai to continue.
"Blocked by you and Uncle Li, I temporarily broke up with Li Meng'er. After that, I kept investigating this matter and learned that the once powerful Rojinli in prison is now running the Old Luo Bar in Star City. I built a good relationship with his son and often visited their home, gradually uncovering the truth. I found out that it was Jin Manyuan who bribed the prison guard Plateau, and then Plateau recruited several inmates to design the murder of Uncle Dong. As for that prison guard Plateau, he has since disappeared," Chukai said solemnly.
"How is that possible?" Fatty scoffed. "Jin Manyuan wouldn't need to bribe a prison guard to kill Dongfang Ao."
Fatty had a point; who was Jin Manyuan? A super big boss, a master at the Soul Level. If he wanted to kill two people, he could do it effortlessly without such trouble.
Then he thought about it; all along, Jin Manyuan had been searching for the Yin-Yang Ancient Coin, wanting to absorb the energy of the Sun God, but fearing the attention of the Judgment of Life and Death. Therefore, he had been unusually low-key. Unless absolutely necessary, he wouldn't casually reveal his powers; otherwise, he wouldn't have paid to have Dongfang Ao take the fall.
He immediately stopped Fatty from continuing to question and gestured for Chukai to go on.
