Jiang Xue glanced at the hand he was holding, her pretty face flushed, but she said nothing and nodded slightly.
Wang Long, however, had no such thoughts at the moment. He held her hand, suddenly turned his body, and the explosive Thunderfire Sun once again coalesced into the Thunderfire Sword, sweeping horizontally through the air and forcing back several approaching enemies.
"Let's go!"
The two immediately quickened their pace towards the mountain gate.
They saw several tall willow trees nearby, reaching up to the clouds, with long branches hanging down as if they were water from the Nine Heavens, a truly spectacular sight.
In the center of the willows were two naturally formed giant stone gates. On the left stone, two large characters were written in blood-red: Forbidden Area!
On the right stone, there were many smaller characters. Wang Long had no time to check them out. With a flick of the Thunderfire Sword, he sliced through the vines and branches blocking the way between the two giant stones and pulled Jiang Xue in with him.
"Damn it!"
"Stop! This is the Forbidden Area of my Serpent Demon Clan. Only the clan leaders can enter at their last moments; normally even elders and clan leaders themselves cannot enter!"
"But... those two people..."
A middle-aged man who looked like a leader sneered, "Don't worry. This Forbidden Area is filled with traps and is an absolute dead end. They will never escape! Moreover, even if they manage to avoid the traps and formations, they will eventually starve to death inside!"
"Let's go. We should check on the other intruder's situation! You all guard this mountain gate and report to me immediately if anything happens! I will ask the elders to send more experts here to keep watch!"
Hearing this, Jiang Xue's heart stirred, and she suddenly said, "If we charge out now, we might catch them off guard..."
Wang Long was about to speak when suddenly the stone door slammed shut, creating an airtight barrier against the wall. Wang Long waved his hand and said, "I should have guessed this earlier..."
As he moved his hand, he realized he was still holding Jiang Xue's hand. In the rush earlier, he hadn't felt much, but now he suddenly noticed the warmth and softness in his palm, which was cool and free of sweat, stirring something in his heart.
Jiang Xue also came to her senses, her pretty face flushed as she hurriedly pulled her hand away from Wang Long's grasp and turned her head away.
Wang Long's heart raced, but he found it somewhat amusing. He thought to himself that he didn't expect this seemingly cold and aloof girl to be so shy. Although she turned away, her cheeks were slightly red, along with her ears and her neck, which was as white as jade, creating an even more captivating beauty.
"Ahem, from what they just said, it seems we won't be able to enter here. However, it looks like we won't be getting out anytime soon either... For now, we should try to find a way out while also praying that Elder Mingyi is safe and manages to break through."
"Mm..." Jiang Xue's face still bore traces of embarrassment as she forced herself to sound calm.
"He won't be in trouble," she added.
"Why? Although Elder Mingyi is formidable, he's facing dozens of people, and among them are four or five who are not weaker than him..."
Jiang Xue suddenly said firmly, "It doesn't matter. After all, he is also a member of the Zhang Family."
Wang Long felt a stir in his heart. He had been puzzled about Jiang Xue's background for quite some time. She was indeed from Long City but had no surname or perhaps had concealed it; however, based on her performance, she seemed to possess perceptive abilities nearly equal to Zhang Mingyi's. Moreover, she was proficient in the Water, Shadow, and Mirage branches of Dragon Arts, which raised questions about her origins.
Furthermore, from the slight pride in her words regarding the Zhang Family, could it be that she was also a member of the Zhang Family or had a close relationship with them?
However, Wang Long did not believe he was familiar enough with this aloof girl to inquire about such matters. He temporarily suppressed his curiosity and whispered, "Let's hope so."
The two remained silent for a moment, and Wang Long sighed, "Let's search around here for a bit. Even if we can't find an exit, we should at least familiarize ourselves with the environment to avoid starving to death."
Jiang Xue nodded, and the two began to push aside the knee-high weeds in front of them as they walked deeper into the Serpent Demon Clan's forbidden area.
"We jumped down from the cliff at Sangyou Mountain. This entire base of the Serpent Demon Clan should be situated in a small valley; from here, we can see the cliff walls in the distance, suggesting it's surrounded by the foot of the mountain and several small hills."
Jiang Xue nodded again, "Be careful; this is the Serpent Demon Clan's forbidden area, so there are bound to be some traps or something similar."
However, after walking for quite some time, they found no traps or secret doors. As they ascended higher, they were able to see the entire small circle around them.
"All around us is dense underbrush; it’s impossible to discern any mystery about this so-called forbidden area... But over there is a waterfall. At least you and I won't die of thirst," Wang Long said with a light laugh as he pointed towards the distant water source.
"Where there is a waterfall, there must be a river. Where there is a river, there must be an exit. The river is probably covered by weeds now. If we search carefully, we might find clues to get out," Wang Long suggested.
"That's a good idea..." Jiang Xue agreed.
Following the direction of the waterfall, they searched for signs of a river. Before long, they heard a low sound of flowing water coming from deep within the grass.
Wang Long was overjoyed and hurried over, exclaiming, "It's here!"
As they pushed through the bushes, they indeed found a clear stream flowing gently. The water flowed over the grass and exposed roots, washing everything clean and crystal clear.
Jiang Xue glanced at the mirror-like surface of the stream and smiled lightly.
The smile left Wang Long completely stunned. Goodness, this cold and seemingly icy woman was actually smiling! And… she looked so beautiful while doing it…
Jiang Xue seemed unaware of Wang Long's gaze as she gracefully bent down, parted the grass, and slightly rolled up the sleeves of her snow-white robe to scoop up a handful of stream water to wash her face.
As she gently wiped away the water from her face, she suddenly felt Wang Long's eyes on her. Her cheeks flushed again as she looked up and softly said, "What… what are you looking at?"
Wang Long noticed the few traces of water still lingering on her exquisite face, her hair slightly damp and sticking to her cheeks, and her long eyelashes trembling with a few water droplets hanging from them. The shyness and unease in her expression stirred a deep sense of affection within him.
"Ah, nothing… nothing at all…" Wang Long quickly stammered, but in his heart, he wondered what it would feel like to kiss that small face.
This thought came out of nowhere but seemed to seize his heart, making it pound wildly in his chest while he desperately tried to hide his feelings.
"You… you’re not allowed to think nonsense!" Jiang Xue stood up, her face as red as blood. Amidst her shyness, there was a hint of mild anger as she softly scolded him.
"…Oh no, could she really tell what I was thinking? Then what I imagined just now…" Wang Long panicked, unsure of what to say or do.
However, for some reason, the more he thought about Jiang Xue possibly knowing his thoughts, the more he couldn't control his wild imagination. His gaze wandered aimlessly but frequently darted toward her blushing face.
