The two approached and saw that in the center of this spacious cave, a row of Ancestral Tablets was neatly arranged, each inscribed with the names of the past Serpent Clan Leaders.
Behind the tablets, there were more than a dozen petrified corpses of Serpent Clan Leaders quietly coiled up, having transformed back into their serpent forms. Their lower bodies were entwined, while their heads remained raised high, facing the Ancestral Tablets of their predecessors.
"It seems we guessed correctly; they are indeed all here. Moreover..." Wang Long pointed to the last petrified corpse. Although it was also positioned steadily, there was no Ancestral Tablet in front of it. "This last leader was probably meant to wait for the current leader to enter the forbidden area before having their Ancestral Tablet made."
Wang Long stood up and silently paid his respects. Seeing Jiang Xue's unusual gaze, he couldn't help but sigh lightly. "The deceased deserve respect; we have indeed disturbed their resting place."
Jiang Xue did not speak but nodded slightly and also bowed gently.
Wang Long smiled at her.
Noticing his smile, Jiang Xue felt a bit flustered and quickly changed the subject. "Look ahead; it seems there is a stone coffin..."
Wang Long looked forward and indeed saw a stone coffin displayed in front of many Ancestral Tablets, perfectly sealed and tightly covered.
"Strange, these past clan leaders have only sat here in meditation, their bodies have already petrified. Who could be inside this stone coffin? Moreover, it seems... these leaders must be worshipping it; it must be extraordinary."
He glanced at Jiang Xue and said with a smile, "Should we open it and take a look?"
Jiang Xue smiled slightly. "Didn't you say that the deceased deserve respect and shouldn't be disturbed?"
At that moment, the cave was dimly lit, with only a faint light from Wang Long's hand illuminating Jiang Xue's face, which appeared as radiant as white jade, exuding a soft and sacred glow that stirred something in Wang Long's heart.
"That may be true, but this stone coffin might hold clues related to our escape. The importance of our safety outweighs that of the deceased," Wang Long said with a smile as he slowly approached the stone coffin.
The coffin appeared unremarkable at first glance, just exceptionally ancient and heavy, as if it had existed for millions of years, filled with a sense of history.
"It looks like something from thousands of years ago. Could it be that the ancestor of the Serpent Demon Clan is inside?" Jiang Xue pondered softly.
Wang Long nodded. "It's very possible. Given how these past Serpent Clan Leaders are bowing in reverence, it's likely that an extraordinary figure is buried inside."
He paused for a moment and looked at Jiang Xue. "What do you think? Should we open it...?"
Jiang Xue hesitated for a while before finally nodding. "But we must be extremely cautious; this stone coffin may hold secrets and could possibly have traps."
Wang Long nodded, protecting Jiang Xue behind him. Suddenly, a Thunderfire Sky-Splitting Sword ignited in his palm, and he hurled it towards the stone coffin to test it out.
To his surprise, the stone coffin showed little reaction; the Thunderfire Sword did not disturb it, nor did it trigger any mechanisms.
Gaining a bit more courage, Wang Long stepped forward, knocking around to search for an opening in the coffin. However, it seemed as solid as a stone slab, with no apparent weaknesses.
"It seems we have to use brute force..." Wang Long sighed, gathering all his Dragon Qi into his palms. He shouted loudly and unleashed a Flying Dragon Thunderclap Hand!
Bang!
A dull yet resonant sound echoed through the cave as the coffin lid was struck and flew parallel into the air, landing several feet away with a thud.
Wang Long and Jiang Xue exchanged glances, both surprised by how easy that had been. Cautiously, they approached to look inside the coffin.
As soon as the coffin was opened, a faint glow emanated from within. Although weak, it illuminated the cave slightly, casting a dim yellow light that was enough to see their surroundings.
Wang Long extinguished the light of the Thunderball in his hand and stepped forward ahead of Jiang Xue to investigate, leaning over the coffin.
Inside, he saw that the faint glow came from a corpse; it was clearly a Serpent Demon Clan skeleton. Although it appeared somewhat cramped in the coffin, curled up as it was, Wang Long felt an inexplicable heavy pressure that he had never experienced even beside Longtou and Wang Yuanxian.
The snake head of the corpse tilted to one side, where its eyes should have been embedded a large Gem. The faint light was emanating from this Gem.
Aside from that, the coffin was empty, giving off an air of desolation.
"So it's just a skeleton? I thought we might find something useful..." Wang Long said with some disappointment.
Jiang Xue glanced at him and reminded him, "Look at the walls of the coffin..."
Wang Long looked down and saw numerous strange characters inscribed on them. They were less like letters and more like distorted symbols that made one feel dizzy upon viewing them.
"This is Ancient Dragon Script!" Wang Long exclaimed with delight. He had not trained in martial arts since childhood but had read many strange tales and historical accounts, giving him some rudimentary knowledge of this legendary script from ancient times.
"Dragon Script? I thought only humans had writing. Did dragons also possess such wisdom in ancient times?" Jiang Xue asked curiously.
Wang Long smiled and replied, "Don't underestimate the dragon race; they ruled this world for countless millennia. Although their Spiritual Intelligence may not have matched that of humans due to their ancient origins, they were among the first beings to explore the Natural Way. This so-called Dragon Script is an enigmatic cultural legacy they left behind... The Dragon Script contains indescribable power, much like how we need to combine seals when performing Dragon Arts; it's also a way to communicate with Heaven and Earth Nature."
Jiang Xue frowned and said, "Are you saying that just by relying on the strange strokes of the Dragon Script itself, there is some inexplicable power contained within?"
"That's right, exactly like that..." Wang Long nodded and replied, "So there is no need for any other mechanisms in this stone coffin. In today's world, those who can decipher the Ancient Dragon Script are few and far between; unless one possesses sufficiently powerful magical abilities that can surpass those of the ancestors who inscribed the Dragon Script spells, it is impossible to obtain anything from the stone coffin."
"I saw how surprised you were by this Dragon Script earlier. Can you decipher it?" Jiang Xue asked again.
Wang Long shook his head and said, "I have only heard a little about it superficially; to say I could completely decipher it is absolutely impossible... However, I could give it a try."
"This Dragon Script has been lost for thousands of years, and now it can actually see the light of day again. You and I are indeed fortunate; just by visualizing these Dragon Script strokes in our minds, we can gain many insights. The power of the Dragon Script also surpasses that of Dragon Techniques, serving as the most direct means of communication with heaven and earth."
As Wang Long spoke, he fell into deep thought, starting to study the Dragon Script on the stone coffin above the Corpse, comparing each stroke with his memories and trying to unravel its mysteries.
The more he looked, the more terrified he became; the faster he worked, the more exhausted he felt. Sweat beads rolled down his forehead continuously, splashing onto the cave floor with barely audible sounds.
Jiang Xue watched him from behind, her delicate brows slightly furrowed, fearing that he might accidentally fall into some strange mechanism and be ensnared by a Spirit.
"So that's how it is... The Dragon Script on this stone coffin records a great secret from ancient times..."
