After a day of intense battle, regardless of their strength, everyone felt extremely fatigued and returned to their tents to rest.
The entire camp was dimly lit by just a few torches, creating an uncertain atmosphere. Fortunately, it seemed they did not need to guard against internal threats.
A shadow moved under the faint light of the torches, silently approaching the tent. Despite its quick movements, it made no sound and did not stir any fluctuations in the surrounding Spiritual Essence.
The shadow appeared to be very familiar with the area, easily locating its target among the identical tents. It transformed into a wisp of smoke and slipped inside one of the tents.
Wang Long, after a day of fighting, looked truly exhausted and was already fast asleep inside. The shadow revealed a smug smile as it quietly approached, holding a short dagger that glowed with a green light. Just looking at the green sheen indicated the presence of poison; even an elder-level deity would not survive such a toxin!
"Die..." The shadow thought coldly to itself before lunging forward, plunging the dagger directly into Wang Long. The blanket was easily pierced, and the blade sank deep into Wang Long's body. With the intense effects of the poison, it seemed that Wang Long was doomed!
However...
"Something's wrong!" The shadow's face showed surprise as it felt that the blade did not penetrate flesh at all! Moreover, when it withdrew the dagger, no blood splattered out!
"Body Flicker Technique?" This was the shadow's first reaction, but it quickly dismissed that thought. The "Wang Long" was still lying there, and oddly enough, he opened his eyes and flashed a smile that could haunt anyone for ten days!
"Ah!"
Suddenly, a painful scream erupted from Wang Long's tent, shattering the silence of the night.
"What’s going on!" Mr. Fan, who was on guard outside, was the last to arrive. By now, Wang Long's tent was surrounded by several layers of people.
"Just an ignorant little thief," Wang Long said with a yawn as he emerged from the tent. "I don't know how an assassin managed to sneak into our camp. His skills weren't bad; it's just too bad he fell victim to my Shen Walking Dragon Technique. Unfortunately for him, he realized what was happening at the last moment and took his own life before I could capture him."
"Oh?" Mr. Fan and the others exchanged glances and entered Wang Long's tent. Sure enough, there lay a body dressed in black.
"How could this happen?" Li Changge's face suddenly turned very grim. "Mr. Fan and I have been patrolling the area and didn't notice any outsiders infiltrating our camp."
"General Li, just because we didn't notice anything doesn't mean others couldn't get in. Since it's an assassin, they must be particularly skilled at stealth. Our strengths do not lie in vigilance, so it’s possible we overlooked something. Mr. Wang Long, I apologize for the scare."
Wang Long waved his hand generously and said, "I’m fine; after all, I didn’t come out here for enjoyment. Besides, I haven't lost any flesh. I just want to remind you all that although we've shaken off those beasts, it doesn't mean we are absolutely safe."
"What Mr. Wang Long said is absolutely right!" Everyone agreed.
Seeing that nothing serious had happened to Wang Long, two soldiers carried the body of the black-clad assassin out, and the crowd dispersed, leaving only Cai Burin behind.
"The six newcomers are all accounted for; it seems they aren't the culprits," Cai Burin had been observing those six individuals.
"That can't be entirely true. Just now, I had them check themselves, and there was neither an extra person nor one missing in the camp. Mr. Fan returned a bit late, but he still showed up in the end. So this person must have infiltrated from outside the camp, which means anyone could be a suspect. What puzzles me even more is why they targeted me?"
"What's wrong? Is it because you're handsome? Do you think others would be punished by divine retribution for trying to assassinate you?" Hearing Wang Long's words, Cai Burin was displeased.
"That's not what I meant! I've been very low-key on this journey, pretending my strength is far below yours. Logically speaking, if someone truly meant us harm, they should have taken you out first."
"I knew you couldn’t say anything nice! You’re just waiting for me to get taken out, aren’t you?"
"Calm down; I'm just stating facts. Anyway, we currently have too little information to draw any conclusions. However, one thing is certain: just because they failed this time doesn’t mean they will give up. Heh heh, a fox will eventually show its tail."
As night deepened, a glimmer of light shone in Wang Long's eyes amidst the darkness.
"Is Lord Wang Long there?" Suddenly, the voice of Hua Ruhai came from outside the tent. Cai Burin showed a fierce expression, but Wang Long patted his shoulder and smiled, saying, "Don't worry, they aren't that foolish. They just failed once and haven't even gauged my strength yet, and they want to come again. I'll handle it."
The next day, the merchant convoy continued on its journey, but this time they were much more cautious. Li Changge instructed his subordinates to scout ahead for more than a mile to avoid stumbling into the Beast Horde again. The atmosphere among the entire group was much tenser than the previous day.
It wasn't just that their casualties from yesterday's battle were too great; more importantly, the ambush that Wang Long suffered last night had created a lack of trust among them.
Wang Long silently shook his head and instinctively glanced at Hua Ruhai nearby.
Yesterday, he had been approached by the Black-Faced Man, who expressed skepticism about this operation. However, fortunately, when they recruited him, they didn't insist on success and had already paid part of the deposit. As long as they could survive and complete the task, it would be a guaranteed profit for them.
When they found Wang Long, their main intention was to establish a defensive alliance.
It seemed they had also sensed the oddity of being suddenly ambushed by the beasts last time and were now questioning the six people who had gone before them.
However, there was still one thing Wang Long couldn't understand. If he guessed correctly, their target should have been Shunshen; why did they suddenly join the Fire Mountain City team so readily? Moreover, these matters were instigated by them—what were they after? What benefit would it bring them to complicate things? Or had he truly misjudged them?
Additionally, Mr. Fan returned much later than Li Changge, who was on duty at the same time. Where had he gone? Could it be that this elder statesman of Fire Mountain City was the one truly harboring secrets?
