At noon, the heavy snowfall from the night finally ceased. The entire forest was draped in silver, a truly beautiful sight. A gray hare was seen stumbling through the snow, and Li Xin readied his bow and arrow to hunt for some meat to take back for a feast. The bow creaked as he pulled it back, and the sound was particularly pleasing at that moment.
Since his encounter with Wei Wujie in the State of Chu, Li Xin had decided never to use ordinary bows and arrows again. They were simply ineffective! Hearing the familiar sound of his ancestral craft made his heart melt.
As the hare hid behind a tree, he calculated the lead time and waited for his target to appear. Suddenly, he felt a sharp sensation as if something had pricked him, prompting him to quickly turn his head to avoid it. An arrow whizzed past his ear, followed by the sound of a sharp object striking a tree trunk behind him. Without turning back to check, he crouched down to observe the situation ahead.
Before him lay nothing but the vast white snow and towering trees; he noticed no abnormalities across the way. Perhaps the enemy had lost sight of their target, as the entire forest was eerily silent.
Having nothing to do in the Temple, Li Xin had decided to venture into the mountains alone for hunting. Therefore, he had no backup and could only face this situation by himself. It seemed that the enemy was confirming his position; for now, he should be safe. However, he dared not move, as he did not know where the enemy was located. The lack of visibility could be due to obstructions, and even a slight movement might reveal his position.
This situation was truly dire because remaining still did not guarantee safety. If there were enough enemies, they could encircle him easily. They would only need one person at the previous attack position while others spread out to find the best shooting angles.
Li Xin understood that if it weren't for a gust of wind that had slightly deflected the arrow earlier, he would have already been hit. It seemed this person was also skilled with a bow; after missing their shot, they immediately concealed themselves and waited for the best opportunity to strike. Although being under such pressure was extremely uncomfortable, he could only grit his teeth and endure it. This was no game; life could vanish in an instant.
Time passed slowly, and Li Xin felt his hand holding the bow nearly freezing stiff. He scanned every possible angle without missing anything; it appeared that there was only one opponent left. Was this a test of endurance? Then let it continue! Just then, a headscarf suddenly peeked out from behind a tree.
Hmph! It seems someone couldn't stand the silence! Li Xin tensed his arms and instinctively released an arrow that felt almost frozen in his grip. Like a shooting star, it struck true with a thud as it pierced its target. As the person hit by the arrow staggered out from behind the tree, Li Xin swiftly shot a second arrow that accurately pierced their throat.
This shooting angle was extremely dangerous; while he could see his opponent, they could see him just as easily. In an instant, life or death would be determined by speed. Before Li Xin could even contemplate whether he had overstepped his bounds, he heard the whistling sound of another projectile slicing through the air towards him.
Five people! There were still five enemies left!
Li Xin quickly scanned his surroundings and urgently brainstormed an escape route. He knew that his recent actions had completely exposed his position; if he didn’t move soon, he would be surrounded by them. A bow and arrow were not like wielding a sword in close combat; by the time you realized you were in danger, you could already be shot through.
Estimating the subsequent positions, he stood up from the snow pit and shot an arrow without hesitation. Then, he twisted his legs and pushed off the ground, turning his body to sprint towards Shanxia. Just as he hid behind a tree, he heard two sounds of arrows striking the trunk.
Since he had already planned the route to break out of the encirclement, what was there to wait for?
Li Xin deliberately peeked out from the right side of the tree, then turned and shot an arrow that had been ready on the left side. He then pushed off the tree trunk and ran towards another tree. He had seen that the pursuing soldiers were about fifty yards behind him, so hitting his target was undoubtedly guaranteed! There were still four left!
Walking horizontally along the slope would lead him to the abandoned Mountain God Temple, but at this moment, Li Xin was running towards Shanxia along the mountain's incline. No matter how many people were chasing him, he must not lead them to the Temple.
The pursuers realized that the second person hit by an arrow fell without a sound, indicating that this prey had sharp teeth. Thus, they dared not pursue too closely as before; they slowed their pace and spread out in a semicircle. As long as they did not give him time to shoot again, they would be relatively safe, and arrows flew out in a flurry.
Hiding behind a tree, Li Xin calculated his next move while observing the slope. After estimating roughly, he shouted loudly in a tone reminiscent of a Korean: "I'm just a local hunter; what's wrong with hunting in the mountains!? The Government hasn't posted any notices about closing the mountains; what do you want!?"
"Qin Barbarians! Stop pretending! I see through your act; you're no hunter!?"
As the voice responded, Li Xin was secretly astonished. How did these guys see through his disguise!? Moreover, he wasn't even wearing military attire... Just as he pondered this, he looked down and suddenly realized. It turned out he was still wearing his Leather Armor! He had been acting crazy earlier, thinking he was just a casual visitor. Now he was indeed a genuine Qin Family soldier! Proudly looking around, he shouted back, "Who are you people? Dare to reveal your names!?"
The responding man clearly had no intention of hiding either; he gestured for his flanks to continue moving. "We are from the Zhao Army's vanguard! You little brat shouldn't be wandering into our territory during winter; what are you up to!? If you're lost, get out of here quickly! Otherwise! I recognize you, but I don't recognize your arrows!"
Hearing this, Li Xin was alarmed. The Zhao Army was indeed fast! His main forces were still lingering around Gao Ping; it seemed he had been too careless! Thinking this, he spat on the ground in frustration. "Damn it! It's easy for you to talk when you're standing there! Red Mouth White Tooth, aren't you afraid of your tongue getting blown away by the wind!? This is clearly my Great Qin territory; when did it become yours!?"
The Zhao Army officer did not respond because there was no need to explain anything further to a dead man. After receiving the signal for attack readiness, he nodded to his soldiers. Several men charged forward simultaneously, eyes wide open as they watched behind the tree for any sign of their target. The prepared arrows were already fixed in position and ready to fire! Just then, a figure darted out from behind the tree attempting to change position. As his fingers released the Bowstring, four sharp arrows instantly struck their target.
As Li Xin threw away his leather armor, he swiftly revealed himself from the opposite direction. With four arrows held between his fingers in his right hand, he let out a loud shout that shook off quite a bit of ice flowers from the treetops. As the falling snowflakes drifted to the ground, four figures hit by arrows slowly knelt down.
Li Xin confirmed that there were no dangers in the surroundings before walking towards the Sentinel soldiers of the Zhao Army. If it weren't for the Rapid Fire technique affecting the power of the arrows, at such a distance, he could have pierced through the target. This was unavoidable, as achieving a rapid firing speed would inevitably sacrifice some of the force generated by the bow itself.
