Li Xin then went to inform the two generals, Han Yongcheng and Zhao Weiran, stationed at Lightwolf Fortress, reporting that the accounts for supplies had been sorted out. After receiving their consent, he hurried to the city walls to notify the army outside to enter the city.
However, he did not expect that the leading commanders, Sima Shang and Li Mu, were nowhere to be found. What puzzled him even more was that only a few soldiers remained guarding the camp outside the city. As for the whereabouts of the main force, none of the soldiers below could provide an answer. It was said that they had gone up the mountain for field training, but whether this was true or not was uncertain.

He hadn't had a proper rest in the past two days due to cooking the books; it was more important to catch up on sleep! After working day and night, he felt like his brain was about to stop functioning! Unable to suppress a yawn upon receiving the news, Li Xin naturally didn't bother to investigate whether this matter was true or not. He instructed the soldiers on the city wall to keep an eye on things below before returning to his quarters for a deep sleep.
What none of the parties involved expected was that Sima Shang and Li Mu had not gone for any outdoor training with their troops. Under Li Mu's guidance, over a thousand troops hurriedly made their way to a strategic ambush position, hiding entirely on the left side of the road.
This location could be described as a natural barrier that was easy to defend but difficult to attack. One side of the mountain path featured steep cliffs while the other side also consisted of sheer drops. The left side of the road had a steep slope, while the right side dropped off into a deep chasm. By sending troops to occupy the slope on the left side and piling up large stones, they could easily block this route.
If enemy forces passed through this section of road, the defending troops could push down boulders to seal off any escape routes for them. Soldiers trapped in between would find it impossible to ascend the slope and could only watch helplessly as large stones filled the entire road. Even if there were some survivors left, their only options afterward would be surrender or choosing to jump off the cliff.
At this moment, Zhao Army had already ascended the slope and formed a defensive line, stacking all movable boulders into a wall. They were just waiting for a large group of troops from Shanxia to appear on the road so they could roll down stones upon them.
As the mist enveloping the mountains slowly dissipated, vibrant greenery filled the landscape with life. The scorching sun beat down relentlessly, yet it did not affect the joyful spirits of Zhao Army stationed on the slope. Having suffered greatly during winter at Old Horse Ridge due to terrain disadvantages, they were now ready to return the favor!

Sima Shang wiped sweat from his forehead while lying next to Li Mu, occasionally glancing at the winding mountain path hidden within dense forests in the distance. What he was most interested in and eager to know was whether Li Mu's predictions would come true. If reinforcements from Qin Army indeed appeared on that road in haste, it would indicate that there were issues within Lightwolf Fortress. As long as they annihilated this Qin Army force, all that would remain was cleaning up in the city to restore order.
Kill those who need killing and deal with those who need dealing with. By resolving supply issues at the frontline soldiers' mess hall through this operation, their combat effectiveness would naturally increase by several percentage points!
Time passed second by second, and it was almost Noon. Sitting in the shade, Sima Shang took a sip of water and glanced around at the soldiers lying in the grass with straw hats, all filled with fighting spirit. Perhaps this was the power of anticipation for revenge; not a single person complained about the current discomfort.
According to the agreement made with Li Mu, this ambush mission would only defend until Noon. If nothing unusual was detected before Noon, they would abandon the current mission and withdraw to Lightwolf Fortress. However, looking at the current situation, it seemed that Noon was approaching quickly.
Yet the mountain path was completely clean and quiet, as if it were merely a landscape painting. At this moment, there was no sign of the Qin Army, not even a grasshopper! As time drew nearer, Sima Shang began to feel a bit restless. He looked up at the blazing sun overhead and handed the leather water pouch to Li Mu. He suggested, "Could it be that they're stuck on the road because of the holiday? Should we wait a bit longer?"
Li Mu squinted at the distant mountain road and spat out a blade of grass he had been chewing. He took the water pouch and drank deeply before asking, "What holiday is it today?"
Sima Shang counted on his fingers and replied, "It seems to be Refugee Relief Day!"
Li Mu burst out laughing, spitting out all the water he had just drunk. "Isn't that holiday supposed to be a non-holiday?"
Sima Shang retorted irritably, "Who knows what those guys are thinking!? It's different every day! They might have adjusted their schedule!"
Li Mu nodded in agreement with this reasoning. "Forget it! That's not something we should worry about; let's talk about serious matters."
Sima Shang pulled out a chicken leg from behind him, took a look at it, and then bit into it with gusto. "My suggestion is not to withdraw everyone; leaving a few hundred here would be wise for precaution. If the Qin Army arrives later, we won't be caught off guard. If they don't let us into the city, we'll have to face them in the wild. It's actually not bad to leave ourselves an option."
Li Mu glanced behind him and noticed there seemed to be no surplus troops. He then looked up at the sun again. If he was correct, news of their troop's presence outside Lightwolf Fortress would reach the Qin Army Camp. Calculating time-wise, they would likely rush to organize their forces to come over. This meant that orders would ensure that this reinforcement from the Qin Army would arrive at Lightwolf Fortress before Noon.
However, there had been no signs so far; could he have been overthinking? Was Lightwolf Fortress still under their control? If so, how terrifying was their military logistics! If they didn't manage this soon, wouldn't future military supplies turn into dust?
After finishing his chicken leg, seeing that Li Mu hadn't responded, Sima Shang asked again, "It's almost Noon, give me a straightforward answer! Otherwise, I might have to arrange for defenses right here."
Li Mu nodded and shook his head, looking again at the expected result that had not appeared. He sighed heavily and said, "No need! Let's wait until noon. If we don't find any traces of the enemy, we'll retreat!"
It seemed there was no other choice! Sima Shang nodded without expressing further opinions, reaching behind him to pull out a chicken leg and deliberately waving it around. He popped it into his mouth, shaking his head as he enjoyed the deliciousness.
Li Mu turned to look at Sima Shang, who was eating slower and slower, suddenly reaching out to touch Sima Shang's back. Surely during this surprise attack, he could snatch a couple of chicken wings!
Unexpectedly, Sima Shang was already on guard; he shifted to the side and blocked the outstretched hand. He placed a chicken bone in Li Mu's hand and laughed, "Li Sergeant! Always be mindful of your identity!"
Li Mu casually tossed aside the chicken bone. "Nonsense! Hand it over quickly! Otherwise, you'll be charged with hoarding military rations!" After saying this, he prepared to launch an attack for the food.
Before the two could engage in their food battle, they heard the Observation Post shout loudly, "General! Enemy activity detected!"
At this moment, Sima Shang could no longer protect his food; he quickly pulled out a chicken leg from behind and handed it to Li Xin, loudly commanding, "Prepare for battle!"
