In the evening, I was sitting on the sofa with Zhang Zhao watching TV. Zhang Zhao suddenly remembered something and took out a stack of documents, handing them to me.
"Cece, this is what you asked me to investigate."
"Take a look."
I took the documents and carefully flipped through them. Zhang Zhao said in a low voice, "I found out that the truck that injured your nephew on Dajing Road that day belongs to someone named Zhu Quan."
"Zhu Quan?" I squinted my eyes. "Who is he?"
Zhang Zhao replied quietly, "He is your nephew's cousin."
"What?" I was shocked. "He is actually my nephew's cousin?"
Zhang Zhao nodded. "Yes."
"And his target should be you."
I sneered, "He wants to kill me?"
"Why would he do that?"
Zhang Zhao said solemnly, "I don't know."
"But I think this matter must be related to your brother."
I nodded. "I think so too."
Zhang Zhao stared at me. "You don't seem surprised."
I smiled and said, "There's nothing to be surprised about."
"Zhang Zhao, do you know? Before I had surgery, I had already died once."
"After I died once, I saw through everyone."
"So now, no matter what happens, I won't be surprised."
Zhang Zhao looked at me with a pained expression. "Cece, you've been through a lot during this time."
"But you promised me, never suppress your feelings."
"If you're feeling upset, just cry it out or tell me."
"I will always be your family."
I nodded with a smile, "Thank you, Zhang Zhao."
"However, from now on, I have no family."
Zhang Zhao asked in confusion, "Why?"
I scoffed, "Because my family only hurts me."
"From now on, it will be an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."
Zhang Zhao looked at me without saying a word.
I knew he felt sorry for me.
But I didn't need his pity.
What I needed was his help.
"Zhang Zhao, are you willing to help me?"
Zhang Zhao nodded without hesitation, "Of course."
"No matter what you want to do, I will support you and help you."
"Cece, I will always be your family."
"Thank you, Zhang Zhao."
We stayed in Australia for almost half a year before finally returning home.
As soon as I got back, I received a phone call.
The caller ID showed the number of the neighbor aunt from my hometown.
I answered the phone.
On the other end was the voice of my Stepmother.
"Cece, you finally answered the phone."
I said coldly, "Is there something wrong?"
My stepmother choked up and said, "Cece, your brother had an accident."
I frowned slightly, "What happened to him?"
My stepmother cried, "A few days ago, while he was working on a project, he accidentally fell down the stairs."
"Not only did he break his leg, but he also suffered a concussion, and he's still unconscious."
"The doctor said if he doesn't wake up in the next half month, he might never wake up again."
I pretended to be surprised, "What? Is it that serious?"
My stepmother nodded through her tears, "Yes."
"Cece, I'm begging you, please come back and see him."
"You were the closest to your brother; maybe if you see him, he'll wake up."
I nodded, "Okay, I understand."
"I'll pack my things and be back soon."
My stepmother hurriedly replied, "Alright, alright."
"Cece, Mom will wait for you."
I hung up the phone.
Zhang Zhao asked in confusion, "What happened to your brother?"
I shrugged, "His mom said he has a concussion and is still unconscious."
"She wants me to go back and see him."
Zhang Zhao frowned slightly, "How could he be so careless?"
I let out a cold laugh and said nothing.
