I smiled and raised the clothes and toys in my hand.
"Mom, I bought a lot of clothes and toys for Xiao Xin."
"Is he not here today?"
My Stepmother's expression changed, and she coldly said, "What Xiao Xin? Doesn't it say Yang Yang?"
"You bought the wrong ones!"
I was taken aback for a moment, then laughed, "Oh, I forgot."
"Yang Yang and Xiao Xin are about the same age; I mixed them up for a moment."
The Stepmother said with a cold face, "Take all these things back."
"We don't need them at home."
"Your dad has hands and feet; he doesn't need a wheelchair."
"He's strong and definitely doesn't need any supplements."
Saying this, she threw the wheelchair and gift box out.
I pretended to be sad and moved everything on the ground back to the car.
"Mom, I understand."
"I shouldn't have come over to annoy you."
"I'll just take these things away."
Seeing me so wronged, my Stepmother's expression looked somewhat unpleasant.
The neighbors nearby began to speak up.
"Cece, don't be mad at your mom."
"That's just how she is; don't mind her."
"Yeah, Cece, just give us those things! We'll pay you."
I shook my head seriously and said, "No way."
"These are all for my dad and Xiao Xin."
"I can't give them to you."
The neighbors showed expressions of envy upon hearing this. I ignored my Stepmother and drove away. On the way, I texted my brother and An Xin, inviting them to my house for the weekend, as I had brought gifts for them from abroad. The next day, my brother and An Xin came over. I handed out the toy gifts and clothes I had prepared for Liu Xiaoxin and Yang Yang to them.
My brother frowned and said, "Sister, why are you spending money so recklessly?"
"These are just toys for kids; we don't need them."
I smiled and replied, "How can we not need them?"
"And there's one for Yang Yang!"
My brother looked confused and asked, "What Yang Yang?"
"This is for Xiao Xin."
I said seriously, "No, this is for Yang Yang."
"I am Yang Yang's godmother; this is a gift from me to him."
My brother was taken aback: "Godmother?"
"When did you adopt a godson?"
I laughed and said, "I've always wanted to adopt Yang Yang as my godson."
"An Xin mentioned before that she wanted Yang Yang to recognize me as his godmother."
An Xin's expression changed: "When did I say that?"
"I was just joking; how could you take it seriously?"
I replied earnestly, "How can such things be a joke?"
"You just want Yang Yang to recognize me as his godmother."
"As your godmother, you have to acknowledge it whether you like it or not."
My brother seemed anxious: "Sister, what are you doing?"
"Why are you adopting a godson out of the blue?"
"You and my brother-in-law don't have children, so there's no need for you to adopt a godson!"
I sighed, "My brother-in-law and I really don't plan on having kids."
"We've always been child-free and are used to this lifestyle."
"However, our villa is too big, and it feels too lonely living here with just the two of us."
"I want Yang Yang to come stay for a few days to liven things up."
My brother's expression darkened upon hearing this.
He frowned and asked, "Sister, what do you mean by that?"
"Do you want to bring Yang Yang over to live?"
I nodded, "Yes."
"What's wrong? Are you unwilling?"
My brother quickly replied, "Of course I'm unwilling."
"Sister, I advise you not to stir things up."
"You’re still young and think being child-free is fine."
"When you get older, you'll realize how miserable it can be."
"By then, you and my brother-in-law won't even have anyone to see you off."
I pretended to be sad, "I know."
"That's why I want to adopt Yang Yang as a godson."
"At least that way, when my brother-in-law and I pass away, there will be someone to send us off."
My brother was taken aback by my words and was momentarily speechless.
I sighed again and continued, "It's not that I absolutely want to adopt Yang Yang as a godson."
"I just want someone who can keep your brother-in-law company."
"Your brother-in-law's health isn't good; I'm afraid he might suddenly faint one day and no one would notice."
My brother opened his mouth but couldn't find the words.
