After a frantic escape, it was hard to tell how much time had passed. The Carrion Beetles gradually lost their target, and tempted by the flesh of the Steel-Toothed Crocodile King, they finally gave up the chase and turned away.
Seeing the terrifying swarm of beetles that had been pursuing them disperse, Ye Feng let out a sigh of relief and signaled everyone to stop.
Everyone was panting heavily and immediately began to meditate to recover their severely depleted Vital Energy.
“That was close. Why did those beetles only react slightly when we passed by, but they stirred up when you went through?” Ye Feng asked curiously.
“I’m not sure either; I just looked at them a bit longer as I passed,” Zong Nan explained, his face flushed with guilt.
Ye Feng was even more confused. “They don’t have vision. Just looking at them a few more times shouldn’t have made them notice you.”
“Only those three Carrion Beetles noticed him. They might be an anomaly among the beetles. When Brother Zhou passed by earlier, he also triggered a slight reaction from them. I remember Elder Brother didn’t provoke any extreme reactions when he went past them either. Why did they choose to attack this time?” Cheng Ze also wondered aloud.
Zong Nan fell silent, having guessed the likely reason but finding it hard to accept revealing the truth in front of everyone.
The three Carrion Beetles that had chased him clearly possessed an ability to sense fear.
“Forget it; there’s no need to dwell on what’s already happened,” Cheng Ze said, waving his hand and breathing heavily.
He had just used the Crimson Flame Ring and then struck at the pursuing Carrion Beetles with dozens of slashes, which consumed a lot of Vital Energy, leaving him slightly breathless.
“Brother Cheng, if it weren’t for you this time, I might have…”
“Let’s not speak of such formalities between brothers,” Cheng Ze laughed heartily. “If we’re to express gratitude, it should be towards Brother Zhou. If he hadn’t stepped up, we might have…”
Both of them thanked Ye Feng in unison. Ye Feng dismissed it casually and suddenly asked, “Did you notice anything unusual while you were running?”
“What unusual thing?” Huang Yao, who had been silent until now, reacted.
“There was a wall that seemed different from the others!” Ye Feng said as he turned back to look behind him, his tone serious.
Under Ye Feng's lead, everyone slowly returned along the original path, carefully examining each wall they passed.
Huang Yao was quite surprised because just moments ago, everyone had been fleeing with all their might from the Carrion Beetle, yet Ye Feng still had the presence of mind to observe the anomalies on the wall.
Ye Feng found it difficult to explain the situation; in reality, he had merely experienced a strange illusion while passing by that wall, an illusion that was fleeting and stemmed from the intuition of a cultivator.
Ye Feng had always trusted his instincts.
The group had been running wildly for an unknown distance and upon returning to search, they found no abnormalities.
"All the walls look almost identical, gray and dull, with no differences. Brother Zhou, are you sure you didn't see it wrong?" After half an hour, Huang Ge said somewhat impatiently.
"It shouldn't be a mistake. Instead of aimlessly searching forward while facing dangers that could appear at any moment, it's better to pay close attention to any changes in the walls. Perhaps we can find a breakthrough," Huang Ge's impatience annoyed Ye Feng a bit, but he maintained a very calm tone.
As they walked, it was just enough time for Ye Feng to slowly recover his damaged Divine Soul. Without the help of Soul Thought, he felt quite uncomfortable, especially in a place like the Ancient Underground Ruins where danger lurked everywhere.
Exploring any ruins would not be smooth sailing. As Origin Martial Realm warriors, they had taken a great risk by recklessly coming to explore without any intelligence or information. If they weren't more cautious, they might not even know how they died when the time came.
Huang Yao signaled to his brother and transmitted a message: "His identity is very mysterious; he may possess abilities that ordinary people do not. Put away your noble temperament and don't make things difficult for me!"
Huang Ge paused for a moment, a flicker of displeasure crossing his eyes. Although he felt somewhat unconvinced, he respected his elder brother and could only swallow his pride and follow behind Ye Feng without daring to voice any dissent.
Walking through the cold and dark open space created an increasingly oppressive atmosphere; no one spoke up voluntarily. They simply followed Ye Feng's instructions and carefully observed each wall they passed.
Finally, Ye Feng, who had been leading the way, stopped and turned to face everyone with a slightly excited tone: "I found it."
The others hurriedly followed him and looked up at the wall beside Ye Feng.
It looked no different from the other walls—gray and covered in dust.
Ye Feng reached out and gently brushed his hand against the wall.
Dust fell away, revealing a severely damaged relief sculpture before them.
Due to extensive damage, the content depicted on the relief was difficult to discern; they could only vaguely see a large group of winged humanoid creatures seemingly engaged in battle with each other.
"Are there reliefs on the other murals as well?!" Huang Yao was startled and quickly walked towards another wall, brushing off the dust to find only bare gray stone beneath.
After cleaning another wall, there were still no murals!
Huang Yao was stunned, realizing that almost every wall was covered in thick dust. How did Ye Feng discover this relief hidden beneath the dust?
"When we passed by earlier, this wall seemed to emit a faint glow!" Ye Feng explained.
Then, his right hand covered the surface of the relief, and a flash of silver light surged, merging into the relief.
As the silver light flickered, the relief underwent a transformation. A silvery orb began to swirl around the surface of the relief, gradually covering it completely.
The enormous relief, about fifty feet wide and over a hundred feet tall, was instantly enveloped in a faint silver glow.
"Boom!"
As the silver light covered the entire relief wall, a series of loud noises finally erupted from behind it. A straight crack appeared right in the center of the relief, splitting it in two and slowly retracting outward to form a secret passageway.
It turned out that this relief was actually a hidden door within the wall.
As the door opened, an ancient and desolate aura rushed forth, with large clouds of dust falling like raindrops.
Everyone stepped back several paces, gazing at the suddenly revealed entrance to the Underground Palace with excitement.
"It really is an entrance! Brother Zhou, you are amazing; how did you find this?" Cheng Ze exclaimed.
"When we were escaping from the Carrion Beetle earlier, this wall flickered with a bit of silver light; you might not have noticed it," Ye Feng smiled. "I am sensitive to light and have been observing my surroundings closely, which is how I discovered this anomaly."
Huang Yao paused for a moment, feeling that this seemed like an excuse Ye Feng made up. Although he had also been running for his life just moments ago, if a sudden flash of light appeared in such darkness, he should have noticed it too.
"Alright, let's go in," Ye Feng said as he glanced at the dark entrance of the door, forcing himself to calm down.
Having finally found the entrance to the Underground Palace, everyone naturally had no objections and followed closely behind Ye Feng as they entered through the relief door.
As soon as Ye Feng entered the walls, he immediately felt a noticeable drop in temperature around him, becoming cold and damp. Fortunately, aside from the significant change in temperature and environment, Ye Feng did not notice anything too unusual.
After passing through the gate of the wall, just as Ye Feng and the others stepped into the large Underground Palace complex, a shadow flew down from above, letting out a piercing roar.
A cold light flickered; the fierce glint in the shadow's eyes made one feel as if they had fallen into an ice cellar.
Clang!
Ye Feng drew his sword with incredible speed, almost simultaneously as the shadow swooped down. He swiftly unleashed three beams of sword light that descended from above, completely blocking the shadow's path.
With no way to evade, the shadow paused and revealed a pair of sharp claws, directly reaching for the sword light.
The three beams of sword light that Ye Feng casually slashed out were executed with about fifty percent of his strength. Even a Fifth-Grade Beast would be killed in an instant, yet those metallic-glimmering claws merely trembled slightly, leaving behind a shallow sword mark without being severed by the sword light.
In that moment of pause, the shadow finally revealed its true form.
It turned out to be a bat-like beast. The metallic-glimmering claws were situated on a massive flesh wing. When it spread its wings, this bat-like beast was about three meters long, blocking a large portion of visibility.
"How could a Shadow Blood Bat appear in a place like this?!" Huang Yao exclaimed in disbelief.
After failing its attack, the Shadow Blood Bat screeched and immediately flew backward, disappearing into the darkness.
"Trying to escape? Fire Elemental Grasp!" Cheng Ze quickly acted, grasping at empty air with both hands. A gigantic flaming hand flashed out; the Shadow Blood Bat could not dodge in time and was pulled back mid-air.
The palm of Phantom was covered with a layer of Fire Elemental Energy, reaching extremely high temperatures that incinerated all the fur of the Shadow Blood Bat into ashes. Even its massive flesh wings were instantly burned through with several black holes.
The Shadow Blood Bat lost all ability to resist and was tightly bound by Cheng Ze's giant palm.
"This move is so powerful; it actually killed it instantly?" Ye Feng exclaimed in surprise.
"The claws are the hardest part of the Shadow Blood Bat's body; its overall defense isn't strong. Besides, it was focused solely on escaping and ignored my attack," Cheng Ze quickly explained.
"I see now!" Ye Feng nodded in realization.
After a struggle, the Shadow Blood Bat was unable to escape the fiery grasp and was burned black all over. It let out a mournful cry before collapsing to the ground.
Looking at the corpse of the Shadow Blood Bat, Huang Yao's expression grew increasingly serious.
He turned to Cheng Ze, "You know about the Shadow Blood Bat too?"
"Three years ago, I went to Jiangzhou. I heard that the Shadow Blood Bat only grows on Blood-Settling Cliff in Jiangzhou, and I even went to see it for myself."
"The Shadow Blood Bat is merely a very weak Second-Stage Beast, easily dealt with by Martial Realm warriors. This particular Shadow Blood Bat clearly possesses greater strength!" Huang Yao glanced at Ye Feng and said with a wry smile, "Moreover, it was able to block Brother Zhou's sword light."
Ye Feng looked at the two worried faces and said, "Everything here is shrouded in mystery. I can't shake the feeling that these Demon Insects have mutated because of this Underground Palace. We have only just entered the Underground Palace; it's not too late to turn back now!"
Ahead lay the Underground Palace, with large outlines of buildings faintly visible. Hidden within those structures could be anything.
Perhaps treasures, or perhaps some extremely powerful entity.
Whether to continue the adventure or not, Ye Feng wanted them to reconsider.
