"My friends are all girls, who am I supposed to go with? If not, I won't go; you all can go!" Zhou Kexin said angrily. She thought her dad was being unreasonable. Why did a gathering have to require a partner? Was he trying to make her feel bad about not having a boyfriend?
"You have to go, because your dad wants you to find a guy you like at the party," a serious voice came from her phone.
"Fine, fine! I'll figure something out! Seriously, he arranges everything for me as if he's afraid I won't get married," Zhou Kexin huffed.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, your admirer He Haoming will be there too," the voice on the phone revealed news that Zhou Kexin didn't want to hear.
After hanging up, Zhou Kexin turned to her friend Hua Lingwei with a troubled expression. "Vivi, what should I do? My aunt wants me to go to the gathering my dad is hosting tomorrow night and insists that I bring a partner; otherwise, I can't get in. I really don't want to go, but my dad is insisting. Where am I supposed to find a boyfriend?"
Sitting on the bed, Hua Lingwei smiled and said, "I can dress as a guy; that way we can both go."
"You?" Zhou Kexin looked at Hua Lingwei. Hua Lingwei's chest was even bigger than hers; even if she wrapped it tightly, it would be obvious she was a girl. Zhou Kexin shook her head and said, "No way, your chest is too big. Even a blind person could tell."
"What should we do then?" Hua Lingwei asked anxiously. She also wanted to attend the gathering hosted by Zhou Kexin's dad since she would accompany her own father and wouldn't have to worry about getting in. But Zhou Kexin's situation was different; her dad was going with her mom, and her aunt was with her uncle. It felt like she was an extra and had to come up with a solution herself. She could just find anyone to go with, but she cared about appearances and didn't want to be laughed at for bringing someone random.
"What if I ask Chen Haoxuan to go with me?" Zhou Kexin suggested excitedly. She didn't know why, but when considering which guy to invite, Chen Haoxuan was the first one that came to mind.
"That could work, but would he agree? After all, he rejected your confession," Hua Lingwei questioned.
"Could you not bring up the confession?" Zhou Kexin shot Hua Lingwei a glare. Her confession to Chen Haoxuan had become a stain in her life; she didn't want anyone mentioning it because it made her feel sad and wronged every time it came up.
"Okay, okay! We won't talk about it! There's no need to get upset over it. How about this: tomorrow you talk to him, and if he doesn't agree, offer him some money. I'm sure he'll say yes for the sake of the money," Hua Lingwei suggested.
The next day, Zhou Kexin and Hua Lingwei arrived early at New City University’s entrance. They were waiting for Chen Haoxuan. Just as class was about to start, they finally saw Chen Yina, who was always with Chen Haoxuan, but they didn’t see him anywhere.
Before Chen Yina could walk over, Zhou Kexin couldn't help but ask loudly, "Chen Yina, where is Chen Haoxuan?"
"He has something to do and won't be coming to class today," Chen Yina replied calmly. She didn't like Zhou Kexin mentioning her Brother Xuan.
"Where is he now? I need to find him," Zhou Kexin asked.
"I don't know," Chen Yina selfishly said. She thought that since her Brother Xuan didn't like Zhou Kexin, she might as well not tell her that Brother Xuan was at home.
"Then give me his phone number," Zhou Kexin insisted, determined to find Chen Haoxuan and get him to join her at her father's chaotic gathering.
"Brother Xuan doesn't have a phone. If you want to find him, just wait until tomorrow! Class is about to start, I have to go now, bye!" After saying this, Chen Yina ignored Zhou Kexin.
Hua Lingwei stepped forward and said to Zhou Kexin, "Zhou Kexin, did you forget that the school has all the students' information? She might not be telling you because she's afraid you'll steal her Brother Xuan. Let's go ask the school for Chen Haoxuan's information!"
"You're right! How did I not think of that? Vivi, you're so smart! Let's go to the principal," Zhou Kexin said happily.
After getting Chen Haoxuan's information from the principal at New City University and finding out where he lived, Zhou Kexin and Hua Lingwei followed the address to find Chen Haoxuan. They passed through tall buildings and arrived at a small village. "So there's a small village near our school," Hua Lingwei said excitedly. She had seen villages on TV but had never been to one; seeing a small village made her feel as if she had discovered a new world.
Zhou Kexin and Hua Lingwei looked around as they entered the impoverished village. The houses in the village didn't have house numbers, so they could only search everywhere for Chen Haoxuan. Every time they passed a house, they would sneakily peek inside to see if Chen Haoxuan was there. This made many villagers think the two girls were thieves; one elderly man even scolded Zhou Kexin and her friend for being young and learning bad habits by trying to steal.
Zhou Kexin quickly explained themselves, and after hearing their explanation, the elderly man personally led them to where Chen Haoxuan lived. On the way, he told them, "You both like Xuan, right? If you do, you better act fast; there are quite a few girls in our village who have their eyes on him!"
"I don't like him; she does," Hua Lingwei joked, pointing at Zhou Kexin.
"Vivi, if you say that again, I'm going to get angry," Zhou Kexin said with a stern face, glaring at Hua Lingwei.
Upon arriving at Chen Haoxuan's place, the man shouted loudly into the house, "Xuan, are you there? Someone's looking for you."
After a while, Chen Haoxuan came out. When he saw that the visitors were Zhou Kexin and Hua Lingwei, he exclaimed, "Zhou Kexin, Hua Lingwei, what do you need me for?"
"Chen Haoxuan, I want to invite you to a gathering hosted by a businessman," Zhou Kexin said.
"A gathering? No way! I'm busy! Find someone else!" Chen Haoxuan rejected without a second thought.
Hua Lingwei whispered in Zhou Kexin's ear, "I guessed correctly, didn't I? If you invite him, he definitely won't go. But if you offer him money, he'll definitely go."
After hearing Hua Lingwei's words, Zhou Kexin really said to Chen Haoxuan, "Even if I invite you, you can name your price."
Chen Haoxuan actually started to consider it. He was really short on money; his living conditions were poor, his food was lacking, he had no appliances at home, and he didn't even have a phone. Plus, with Chen Yina's family in such difficulty, he wanted to help her.
"What's the maximum you can offer?" Chen Haoxuan decided that if Zhou Kexin offered a high enough price, he would go.
