Today, many people went to Haihe (the river that Chen Haoxuan passes on the way to Huang Weicheng's house) to see the spectacular sight of the river water crashing against the shore.
Zhou Kexin and Hua Lingwei also came, along with other close friends. They were by the riverbank like children, staying near the railing. Whenever the river water surged in, they would giggle and scatter, sometimes using umbrellas to shield themselves from the water splashing onto the shore.
Not many people played like Zhou Kexin and her friends; it wasn't that they didn't want to, but it was too dangerous. If one wasn't careful and got blown into the river or swept away by the waves, it would be disastrous.
While playing, Zhou Kexin accidentally twisted her ankle. "Ouch, Vivi, I twisted my ankle," she said, unable to bear the pain, so she squatted down.
Zhou Kexin was completely unaware that death was beckoning her. A strong wind suddenly blew, lifting the river water high into the air with a loud crash as it hit the shore. When the water receded, Zhou Kexin was gone.
Hua Lingwei intended to help Zhou Kexin, but before she could reach her, Zhou Kexin was swept away by the river. She witnessed everything in horror, and a piercing scream escaped Hua Lingwei's lips: "Ah—."
"Vivi—Vivi, what's wrong?" a girl who had come with Hua Lingwei asked nervously. Besides Hua Lingwei, no one else knew that Zhou Kexin had been swept away by the river.
"Zhou Kexin has been swept away by the river! Wuwuwu... you all must save her! Wuwu... Zhou Kexin..." A panicked Hua Lingwei began to cry. She was truly anxious, scared, and worried about what might happen to Zhou Kexin.
"Help! Someone has fallen into the river! Help! Help..." Some of Hua Lingwei's companions were calling for help, some were notifying Zhou Kexin's family, while others were shouting for assistance.
With such strong winds and rushing waters, who would dare to go in?
"Help—help..." Suddenly, Zhou Kexin's cries for help echoed from the river but quickly faded away. There was no sign of her in the water.
"Help me, Vivi! Please help me..." Just as Zhou Kexin was lifted by the water, her words were cut off as she was mercilessly submerged again.
“Zhou Kexin, Zhou Kexin…” Hua Lingwei could no longer hold back and ran towards the river, preparing to jump in to save Zhou Kexin. In her panic, she realized she couldn’t swim, and jumping in could lead to her own demise. Fortunately, her friend grabbed her, or else Hua Lingwei might have faced disaster as well.
The people who had come with Hua Lingwei began to call for help from those on the shore, but no one dared to jump into the river. In fact, many wanted to help since both the victim and her friend were beautiful and wealthy. However, seeing the waves stirred up by the wind made them shake their heads, silently praying for the victim.
Hua Lingwei started pleading with everyone around: “Sir, please, I beg you, save my friend! Please…” She cried as she clutched a middle-aged man’s arm.
“Miss, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but the current is too strong and the wind is too fierce. If I jump in to save her, I might drown before I can even reach her. I’m really sorry, but I can’t take that risk,” the middle-aged man said regretfully.
Suddenly, Hua Lingwei spotted a familiar figure. Seeing this person was like seeing a ray of hope; she ran towards him shouting, “Chen Haoxuan! Chen Haoxuan! Please save Zhou Kexin! She’s been swept into the river! Hurry!”
Hearing Hua Lingwei’s cries, Chen Haoxuan turned around and saw her tear-streaked face. “Vivi, what happened?” he asked in confusion.
Hua Lingwei rushed to Chen Haoxuan’s side, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the river while explaining, “Zhou Kexin was just swept away by the current! You have to save her!”
Upon hearing this, Chen Haoxuan immediately sprinted ahead of Hua Lingwei towards the river. A matter of life and death left no room for hesitation. “Where is she? What’s her location?” he asked urgently while taking off his clothes.
Hua Lingwei pointed towards the river and said, “Over there by that small piece of wood! I saw Zhou Kexin right there just now, but— but now…” She broke down in tears.
“Don’t worry; she’ll be fine,” Chen Haoxuan reassured Hua Lingwei before jumping over the railing with a splash as he hit the water.
He quickly swam towards the spot Hua Lingwei had indicated. After scanning the area and not seeing Zhou Kexin anywhere, he dove underwater.
Forty seconds later, Chen Haoxuan resurfaced. Hua Lingwei felt a moment of joy upon seeing him emerge but quickly realized he went back under; he hadn’t found Zhou Kexin yet—he was just coming up for air. On the shore, hundreds of eyes anxiously watched the river's surface, silently praying for both Chen Haoxuan and Zhou Kexin.
Thanks to the relatively clear water in the river, Chen Haoxuan was able to see objects one or two meters away from him at the riverbed. Suddenly, he spotted a white object and immediately thought of Zhou Kexin. Ever since he met her, she had mostly worn white clothing. Chen Haoxuan quickly swam over and confirmed that it was indeed Zhou Kexin.
At that moment, Zhou Kexin was in a state of unconsciousness. If she didn't start breathing soon, she might leave this world forever. As Chen Haoxuan jumped in to save her, he realized that she had been submerged for some time. For Zhou Kexin's life, Chen Haoxuan kissed her, transferring the little oxygen he had left into her mouth.
To clarify, Chen Haoxuan was not taking advantage of Zhou Kexin; he was saving her. He was delivering his own oxygen through his mouth to hers. Zhou Kexin instinctively inhaled the oxygen he provided, perhaps driven by her survival instincts.
Chen Haoxuan gave the remaining oxygen to Zhou Kexin, which left him severely lacking oxygen himself. He was still about ten meters away from the surface of the river. To alleviate his struggle with hypoxia, he took a couple of gulps of water and then desperately swam toward the surface.
Finally, Chen Haoxuan and Zhou Kexin emerged at the river's surface. After quickly gasping for air, he checked on Zhou Kexin and found that she had stopped breathing. He quickly used one hand to pinch her acupoint, and after doing so, Zhou Kexin slowly regained consciousness. She coughed up some water and then muttered in confusion, "Is this heaven?"
