Chen Haoxuan was very ruthless; he made Lin Hao and the others practice against each other for over an hour, leaving them gasping for breath and, more importantly, covered in bruises. Yet, Chen Haoxuan still forced them to change into camouflage uniforms and armed them with a dagger, instructing them to run up the mountain.
Poor Lin Hao and the others had reached mealtime but were still required to train continuously. Chen Haoxuan ordered Lin Hao and the others to run ahead while he urged them from behind.
After half an hour of extreme running, Lin Hao and the others found themselves deep in the mountains.
"Stop, rest in place," Chen Haoxuan suddenly shouted loudly.
As soon as his voice fell, Lin Hao and the others immediately halted, sitting by the roadside and panting heavily. Yang Lin had a better physique than Chen Haoxuan, but compared to Lin Hao and the others, his stamina was still lacking. He seemed to lack the strength even to sit up and lay flat on the ground. If it weren't for the visible rise and fall of his body, Chen Haoxuan might have suspected he was dead.
Chen Haoxuan was also quite tired but held on with his strong willpower.
"It’s noon now; is everyone hungry?" Chen Haoxuan called out to Lin Hao and the others.
"Hungry," they replied in unison, as if they had developed an invisible camaraderie through their training.
Panting on the ground, Yang Lin spoke up, "With all this sparring and extreme running on mountain trails, I’m both exhausted and starving. I feel like I’m about to die."
Chen Haoxuan lightly kicked Yang Lin and joked, "My physique is worse than yours; you know that. Yet I'm still standing while you're lying down. Isn't that a bit embarrassing? You can't even compete with the weakest among my subordinates; it seems you were born to be weak."
"Who says I can't stand up? I'm lying down to recover my strength faster, you know?" Yang Lin struggled to get up from the ground and explained to Chen Haoxuan.
Chen Haoxuan loudly addressed Lin Hao and the others: "It's already lunchtime, so I’m giving you two hours to find food. We’ll meet by the small creek on the right."
"What can we find to eat in these deep mountains? It's not like we can buy something in a city," Yang Lin said confusedly to Chen Haoxuan.
"You must have heard the saying 'live off the mountains if you're in the mountains, live off water if you're by water,' right? We're on a mountain now; there are countless delicacies here. Whether you can find them depends on your own abilities. If anyone fails to find food, just be prepared to go hungry!" Chen Haoxuan said seriously.
Lin Hao stood up, took out his dagger, and boldly said, "I'll go hunt a wild boar for everyone."
"Everyone, hurry up! Time is running out," Chen Haoxuan urged Lin Hao and the others.
Lin Hao and the others pulled out their daggers and scattered into the woods. Yang Lin, however, was a city kid and was unfamiliar with the mountains. He wasn't sure what edible things could be found there; he only knew that animals could be eaten.
Chen Haoxuan, as the boss, could have opted out, but he didn't want to rely on others to satisfy his hunger, so he also ventured into the deep forest.
The forest where Chen Haoxuan and his group were became chaotic with sounds of surprise and laughter echoing through the trees, even accompanied by the roars of wild boars. There were many wild boars in the deep mountains near Chen Family Village due to their high reproductive capacity; a single litter could contain several piglets.
At that moment, Chen Haoxuan was walking with a one-meter-long bamboo pole, using it to stir up the grass. He aimed to scare out any animals hiding in the underbrush so he could catch them. Suddenly, a wild chicken weighing about two pounds flew out from the bushes, trying to escape. Chen Haoxuan would not let this prey slip away since he was truly hungry.
With a swoosh, a glint of silver shot toward the wild chicken. After letting out a cry of distress, the chicken fell from the air. The silver flash was actually Chen Haoxuan's thrown dagger; he couldn't outrun the wild chicken, so he had to use a darting method to catch it.
Chen Haoxuan ran to where the wild chicken had fallen and saw it lying motionless on the ground. He clasped his hands together and said aloud, "I'm helping you reincarnate as a human soon; you should thank me."
Chen Haoxuan returned with a wild chicken weighing about two and a half pounds—enough for him to eat.
When Chen Haoxuan arrived back at the designated creek, he saw several teammates cleaning their spoils. Some had rabbits, some had wild chickens, and others had various birds... It seemed these people were quite lucky to have caught prey so quickly.
On his way back, Chen Haoxuan had gathered some seasonings; otherwise, roasting it straight would make it taste terrible.
After cleaning his wild chicken by the creek, he gathered some dry twigs and lit a fire, leisurely roasting the chicken beside it.
About twenty minutes later, Lin Hao and a few others returned carrying a wild boar that weighed over a hundred pounds. The boar was covered in cuts and looked quite tragic; it could be described as being pierced by ten thousand arrows.
"Boss, look, we just took down a big wild boar, and there are five or six smaller ones. The others went to chase them," Lin Hao said excitedly to Chen Haoxuan.
"Tell me how you managed to catch it," Chen Haoxuan asked.
"We followed the footprints to find the wild boar, Boss. You have no idea how tough this boar was! If it weren't for our agility, we might not have been able to subdue it because it was incredibly strong. So we decided to work together; several of us held the boar down while desperately stabbing it with daggers until it died. That's why we're covered in blood," Lin Hao explained.
"Go wash up in the creek! Otherwise, when we head down the mountain, the villagers will think I took you all to commit murder!" Chen Haoxuan laughed.
Yang Lin felt fortunate to have gone hunting with Lin Hao and the others; otherwise, as someone who knew nothing about the deep mountains, it would have been very difficult for him to catch any prey.
Chen Haoxuan and over thirty people roasted meat together, and the aroma wafted through the mountains. If there were tigers or wolves in the area, they would surely be attracted by the smell of the meat.
Chen Haoxuan suggested that Lin Hao and the others get some herbs like he did, crush them, and sprinkle them on the roasted meat for added flavor.
Once their meat was cooked, Lin Hao and his group complained that it didn't taste good. Of course, roasted meat without oil, salt, sauce, or vinegar wouldn't taste good!
Lin Hao's group didn't want to eat it, but Chen Haoxuan insisted. He said that as a skilled person, one must adapt to various situations, such as enduring pain and swallowing pride, eating the worst food, and drinking the dirtiest water... all for survival. Do you understand?
