When they returned to the dormitory, Du Xiaonan was already awake. She sat on the bed, staring blankly outside, showing no reaction even when the two of them entered.
"Xiaonan, are you awake? How are you feeling? Is there anywhere that feels uncomfortable?" Su Jin'er asked as she stood by the bed.
Du Xiaonan remained unresponsive, hugging her knees against the wall, completely still, like a statue.
Su Jin'er exchanged glances with Linyuan and then climbed onto Du Xiaonan's bed. "Xiaonan, where did you go to investigate? What exactly happened?"
"She came. She wants to kill us all. We are all going to die."
Her words came out rapidly, like beans spilling from a bag, her eyes filled with fear. Yet, despite this, her gaze remained fixed ahead.
"Who? Who do you mean came?"
"She came. Go away! Don't come looking for me."
"Be careful!"
Du Xiaonan suddenly went wild, forcefully pushing Su Jin'er away from her. Caught off guard, Su Jin'er nearly fell off the bed.
Du Xiaonan curled up in the corner, clutching her shoulders and looking fearfully out the window. But there was nothing outside; no one knew what she truly saw.
"What should we do? Right now, we can't get anything out of her because of her mental state. Qian Qian has been missing for a day; I wonder if she is in any danger?"
"Should we call the police?"
"Even if we call the police, we have to wait 48 hours. Let's first find out what happened five years ago and who this 'she' that Du Xiaonan mentioned is."
"What about Du Xiaonan? Look at her like this."
Su Jin'er turned to look at Du Xiaonan on the bed, her eyes widening in surprise. When did Du Xiaonan quietly lie down and fall asleep?
"When did she go to sleep?" she asked with a trembling voice.
Linyuan shook her head and said, "I didn't notice!"
What exactly happened to Du Xiaonan? Why had she become abnormal after returning? Where had they gone?
Seeing that Du Xiaonan was asleep, Su Jin'er said, "Forget it, let's first see what happened five years ago!"
They sat down and began to sift through the thick documents.
Most of the documents were school records about what activities the school held and what events they participated in—some useless information. However, among those activities, they found the name Li Yiqing, and another name caught their attention. It was a girl's name; from the documents, it appeared to be Li Yiqing's good friend. That girl was named Liu Mengmeng, who lived in the same dormitory as Li Yiqing, meaning she also lived in Room 414 and was not dead. So where was she now? Would she know any details?
"We need to investigate this Liu Mengmeng," Su Jin'er said while flipping through the documents.
"Jin'er, look here!" Su Jin'er leaned over to Linyuan. "Student Li Yiqing from the class of '76 committed suicide due to academic pressure. Her best friend Liu Mengmeng fell seriously ill from the shock and then dropped out."
"So Liu Mengmeng dropped out right after Li Yiqing died. What kind of relationship did they have that was so close that one would drop out due to the other's death? There must be something fishy about this."
"And that's not all! Look here: during Liu Mengmeng's illness, another classmate from the same dormitory, Zhuang Xiaoyan, visited her in the hospital and then returned to school only to commit suicide. This is too strange!"
"This Zhuang Xiaoyan must be the second girl who died in Room 414 that Ouyang Chunxiao mentioned!" Su Jin'er rubbed her temples. "Why did they commit suicide? What conspiracy is behind this?"
"Hey! Why is this part torn off?" Linyuan frowned as she turned to the next page.
Su Jin'er glanced at them and said, "It seems someone took the information before us. That person must be Killer. Let's go find Chu Feifan."
In the pavilion.
They showed the materials to Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi. Chu Feifan said, "Let's organize the clues we have first. Only then can we see what the problem is."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
The autumn air was growing stronger, with most of the leaves already fallen. The few remaining leaves trembled in the autumn wind, barely able to withstand its fury, swaying precariously.
Next came a series of strange occurrences they encountered after entering the school.
First, during Military Training, there were ten of them in total. On their way to find the banner, they encountered a woman who was burning something. From her mouth, they heard the word "curse," though they didn't know what kind of curse it was. Then, the first person to die, Xu Mengguang, saw a white shadow. Following that, Su Jin'er heard someone crying, but no one paid attention. Later, Zuo Yi found many bones at the location of the flag. Just as they were about to return, they got lost on the way back and unexpectedly fell asleep at some point, all having the same strange dream. Currently, they only knew that Li Yiqian's dream was different from theirs; as for what dream Xu Mengguang had, they had no way of knowing. However, perhaps they could still ask Zhang Junsheng about his.
"Have you guys talked to Zhang Junsheng? I feel like he has a lot he's not telling us," Su Jin'er asked.
"No! Next is what happened when we returned to school. By the way, do you remember that morning when Xu Lingling said she saw Xu Mengguan's body?" Chu Feifan said.
"Of course I remember."
"Perhaps she really did see his body; it might have just been taken away by someone by the time we got there."
"Let's not think about that for now; we should organize our clues first! I really feel so confused right now!" Linyuan said with uncertainty.
While she felt confused, everyone else felt equally lost, as if someone had deliberately tangled up the clues to make it impossible for them to investigate!
"After that, we returned to school, and then Xu Mengguang's body disappeared only to suddenly be thrown down from the girls' dormitory. Next came the knocking sound we heard in our dormitory when there was no one outside and those strange characters on the wall. Then there was Li Ran's death. What connection do these events have? Oh right, what about the monster we encountered last night?" Linyuan furrowed her brows and recounted everything she knew, of course skipping over Li Yiqian taking Su Jin'er's underwear as a bargaining chip and that Li Yiqing was her sister.
"I find this Li Yiqian very strange. By the way, what is the relationship between Li Yiqing, who died five years ago, and Li Yiqian?" Zuo Yi suddenly asked.
Su Jin'er and Linyuan exchanged glances. Although they were currently investigating with Chu Feifan and the others, they were still unsure whether they were friends or foes, so there were some things they chose to conceal.
Su Jin'er never expected that her distrust of them would lead to the tragedy that followed.
They shook their heads and said, "Qian Qian didn't say she knew Li Yiqing; it's just a similar name, which doesn't mean they know each other!"
Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi nodded in agreement and fell silent. In fact, Chu Feifan knew that Su Jin'er and the others were still hiding something from them, but he felt it was inappropriate to bring it up.
"By the way, besides the student council Chairman who has the key to the data room, who else has one?"
"Does this have anything to do with what we are investigating?"
"Yes, because part of that data has been torn out."
All the things they knew and didn't know were tangled together like a mess, making it impossible to sort out. Meanwhile, the missing Li Yiqian still had no news, and the abnormal Du Xiaonan was still sleeping soundly in her dormitory bed. No one knew what had happened to them.
Chu Feifan rubbed his nose and said, "You mentioned that Li Yiqian is missing and Du Xiaonan has become very abnormal. Maybe we should start our investigation from this point; it might yield some results."
Su Jin'er brushed her wind-tousled hair back and said, "I think so too. That's why Xiaoyuan and I went to the forest Xiaonan mentioned this morning. I found this."
She took out Li Yiqian's hairpin from her pocket and handed it to them.
"You said you went to that forest this morning?"
"Yeah! We did." Linyuan looked at Chu Feifan's suddenly flushed face with glee. She recalled the scene she had seen in the forest and was curious to see how this handsome guy would explain that situation.
"Have you seen anything else?" Chu Feifan's face turned red and pale.
Linyuan wanted to say something, but was stopped by Su Jin'er: "We only found this hairpin. I want to hear your opinions."
Chu Feifan awkwardly cleared his throat: "I also find Li Yiqian very strange. Although we've only met her twice, it seems like she has something on her mind, and she always acts very mysteriously, even hinting at things related to the Demon."
Su Jin'er felt the same way, but since she knew that Li Yiqian wanted to avenge her sister, some of her odd behaviors seemed normal. Now she wasn't sure if she should tell the two boys across from her about these matters. There was still no clue, and anyone could be the Killer, so she had to be cautious.
But why did she trust Li Yiqian so much? Wasn't she the one who took her things and exchanged them with others behind her back?
Seeing Su Jin'er fall silent, Chu Feifan habitually rubbed his nose and said, "I think we should go find Zhang Junsheng first! Maybe he will tell us something sooner."
"Do you think we haven't tried? He won't say anything, just told us not to investigate further, saying it wouldn't do us any good," Linyuan pouted.
Zuo Yi suddenly stood up and said, "Hey! The more he says that, the more curious I get. The more he tries to stop us from investigating, the more we need to dig deeper. Let's go find him together." Then he bent down again and mysteriously added, "And we need to look into your dorm mate Du Xiaonan as well."
