Looking at the ground covered with fallen leaves and trash, Su Jin'er couldn't help but frown. How long would it take to find anything in such a large forest?
Just as she was about to give up searching, her phone rang.
Linyuan heard her ringtone and quickly ran over. "Whose call is it?"
"It's Chu Feifan's." She answered the call and asked, "Did you find any clues?"
Chu Feifan paused for a moment and said, "Where are you?"
"I'm in the forest where Zhang Junsheng's body was discovered."
"What are you doing there? It's very dangerous."
"Do you have any news?"
"Yes! I found some information on Zhang Junsheng. Shall we meet at the school gate?"
"Okay!"
After hanging up, Su Jin'er took a deep breath. Did Zhang Junsheng really leave no clues, or had she just searched in the wrong place?
"Aren't you going to keep looking?" Linyuan tossed aside the branch he was holding and clapped his hands.
"Well! After searching for so long without finding anything, I'll bring both of them along next time."
When they returned to the school gate, Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi were already waiting for them.
"What information have you found about Zhang Junsheng?" As soon as she saw them, Su Jin'er asked. She was very worried about Li Yiqian's safety; it had been four days since she last returned, and perhaps the situation was dire.
"You won't believe this. Zhang Junsheng is three years older than us. Logically, he should be at least two grades ahead of us, but why is he in the same grade as us?" Zuo Yi said, puzzled, while rubbing his chin with his thumb and index finger.
"What's so strange about that? Maybe he repeated two grades or started school two years late!" Linyuan replied, looking at him.
"Alright, stop keeping us in suspense. I'm really worried about Qian Qian!" Su Jin'er said anxiously, frowning.
"Zhang Junsheng, 21 years old, lives in this city but is not a local. The records don't specify where his hometown is. His parents are both farmers who came to this city to work. Perhaps that's why his grades are still good, so it's impossible for him to have repeated a grade. The reason he is in the same grade as us is that he suddenly went missing two years ago."
"Missing?"
"Yes! But at that time, he wasn't called Zhang Junsheng; his name was Zhang Jun, which he changed later."
"How do you know all this? And even if he changed his name, his appearance shouldn't have changed! Shouldn't those third-year students recognize him?" Knowing about Zhang Junsheng's background didn't simplify things; it made them more complicated. Was it possible they were overthinking the situation? She couldn't understand.
"I'm curious about that too."
"Shouldn't there be a photo of him in the student records?"
Chu Feifan shook his head while Zuo Yi shrugged helplessly.
"We wanted to find his photo too, but not only is there no photo, even the information we have is only half complete. I think someone might have destroyed useful clues before we got to them, leaving us with either useless information or misleading clues."
Hearing Chu Feifan's words, Su Jin'er's heart sank. How could they find anything without any leads?
"And we also gathered information about the three deceased individuals. At their death scene, there were only their own footprints and fingerprints. The cause of death for Li Ran and Zhang Junsheng was the same; both had their carotid arteries severed."
"Could it be that ghosts really exist in this world?" Linyuan's voice was somewhat sharp, her body and teeth trembling.
"Linyuan, calm down. There are no ghosts in this world; ghosts are just figments of people's imagination. Don't scare yourself."
Linyuan was not a brave person. Her interest in Forensic Science wasn't truly about enjoying the feeling of a knife cutting through skin, but rather because she wanted to become a forensic doctor. However, now that such a bizarre murder case had occurred, she was frightened.
"Aren't you going to be a forensic doctor? You can't be afraid of corpses, and you definitely can't be afraid of ghosts. At least right now, we are looking at complete bodies." Releasing Linyuan, she looked at Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi and said, "I need you to help me with something."
"What do you need?"
"Take me to the police station."
Su Jin'er was not someone who acted recklessly. They had reported the case four days ago, and there had been no news from the police station. Even more infuriating was that three people had already died at school and one was missing, yet the school authorities acted as if nothing had happened. Didn't they fear that these events would leak out and damage the school's reputation? Or...
A terrifying thought startled her. It couldn't be; she must be overthinking it. She shook her head, trying to dispel the chaotic thoughts in her mind, but that idea seemed to take root and wouldn't go away.
"Jin'er, doesn't Xiaonan look like she's possessed?" Linyuan leaned over the bed, watching Du Xiaonan leaning against the wall, repeatedly bumping the back of her head against it.
Su Jin'er raised her head to look at Du Xiaonan on the upper bunk of another bed. Her eyes were vacant, her face pale, her lips trembling continuously, and her hair was a mess. After she returned and spoke once, she hadn't said anything since. Her condition was truly bizarre.
Her eyes were fixed intently on the window outside, as if something terrifying could come through at any moment.
No, that's not right.
Su Jin'er looked at her again, feeling something was different from before. What had changed?
She stared intently at Du Xiaonan.
"Jin'er, what's wrong? Why are you staring at her?"
"Xiaoyuan, look quickly! Xiaonan is different from just now, hurry!" Although she was speaking to Linyuan, her gaze never left Du Xiaonan.
Due to Su Jin'er's nervousness, Linyuan began to feel anxious as well. She was already scared, and now she was even more frightened. Tilting her head, she carefully observed Du Xiaonan.
It was the eyes!
Yes, it was the eyes. Just a moment ago, her gaze had been vacant, but now it was filled with terror. Why had it taken her so long to notice such a significant change?
Following Su Jin'er's line of sight, she slowly turned her head to look out the window. It was a simple action, yet she found it incredibly difficult to accomplish. It felt as if her neck were encased in plaster; with each turn, she could hear the sound of cracking plaster or the fear that her neck might snap.
Finally, she completed the motion, but it left her drenched in sweat. It was early winter; there should be no reason for her to sweat so much!
The sky outside had turned completely dark. She widened her eyes and stared outside, her fear growing. At the top of the window, something was swaying, slowly descending bit by bit.
It was a human head!
Oh my God! It was a bloody human head hanging upside down outside the window, its eyes wide open and glaring at her through the glass. Her breathing quickened; she wanted to scream loudly, but no sound came from her throat. The head continued to lower until finally, she saw its entire face—it was Zhang Junsheng's face, one she knew very well. His tongue had grown unnaturally long, completely covering his nose, and blood dripped from the tip of his tongue, some even sticking to the window.
Fear surged through her body in an instant. Why couldn't she make a sound? Why couldn't she move even a little? Even more terrifying was that she realized she couldn't even move her eyeballs; she could only lock eyes with that horrifying head outside.
Oh my!
Xiaoyuan quickly realized, or perhaps called out to herself! Why was Linyuan silent at this moment? Could it be that she was in the same situation as herself?
Suddenly, that head began to laugh, and Su Jin'er felt every hair on her body stand on end, her scalp tingling! Breathing became increasingly difficult, as if the air around her was being slowly siphoned away, and she was on the verge of suffocating, with a tearing pain in her chest.
Just when she thought she was about to die, a scream finally brought her relief.
Once she recovered, she gasped for air, feeling as if all her bones had been dismantled. The most terrifying part was that lingering sense of fear still remained in her heart.
Finally, she mustered the courage to slowly lift her head and look out the window.
That head belonging to Zhang Junsheng had—disappeared.
Could it have just been her imagination?
Wait, who let out that scream?
“Xiaoyuan.”
She finally found her voice; it felt good to be able to speak.
At that moment, Linyuan was curled up in the corner, looking terrified.
“Xiaoyuan, are you okay?” She climbed up to the upper bunk and held the trembling Linyuan in her arms.
"Ghost! Jin'er, there really is a ghost. I saw it, I really saw it."
"Xiaoyuan, don't be afraid. What we saw was just an illusion; there are no ghosts."
"But I really saw it! She said she wanted to take me away. Look!"
Linyuan pulled up her sleeve, revealing five bright red fingerprints on her wrist, forcing them to believe everything that had just happened.
"What exactly did you see? Why did it pull you?"
"I saw a woman, a woman with disheveled hair. Her face was covered in blood, her skin was gone, and there were many white worms wriggling on her. Her eyes were two black holes, she had no upper lip but a lower lip. She floated in slowly from the window and stopped in front of my bed, looking at me with those eyeless sockets. She was really looking at me, then she reached out her hand and said she wanted to take me away. It was so terrifying. I wanted to call for you, but I couldn't make a sound."
Listening to Linyuan's words, Su Jin'er felt as if she had been plunged into icy water.
"Wasn't that scream you just heard?"
Linyuan shook her head tremulously.
"Then it was Xiaonan?"
They suddenly realized that there was another person in the dormitory, but by the time they remembered her, Du Xiaonan was already missing from her bed.
"Where did Xiaonan go? Did you notice?"
"I was so scared myself; how could I pay attention to her!"
"The scream wasn't made by you or me; it was Xiaonan. But where did she go?"
"Could she be in the bathroom?"
"Let's go check!"
Su Jin'er climbed down from the bed first, followed by Linyuan. They held hands and slowly walked toward the bathroom.
Su Jin'er slowly reached for the bathroom door. Even though it was a short distance away, it felt like she could never reach it.
Finally, she gathered her courage and pushed the door open. The moment the door swung open, a cold wind rushed in, causing them to shiver uncontrollably.
"There's—there's nothing here."
In such a small dorm room, where could she possibly go?
