"Do you believe me now?"
A sudden voice came from behind, startling Su Jin'er, who quickly turned around to see Ruan Hongmei.
"How did you wake up?" Seeing her, Su Jin'er sighed in relief and then turned on the faucet to wash her hands.
"Actually, I knew about your situation just now," Ruan Hongmei said with a strange smile on her lips.
"Then why didn't you call me?" Su Jin'er replied angrily. Even though they were friends for the first time, she shouldn't have just watched her get into trouble!
"Why should I call you? This is something I wanted you to truly experience," Ruan Hongmei continued to smile eerily, her lips red as if they were about to bleed.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because I want you to believe that I truly exist."
Su Jin'er looked at her in shock, and then Ruan Hongmei's face began to distort. Slowly, her skin started to peel away, revealing patches of pale, ghastly bone. A large amount of blood gushed from her forehead, flowing down like a waterfall onto the ground. Her eyes glared fiercely at Su Jin'er, her mouth widening more and more until the corners nearly reached behind her ears. Suddenly, her eyeball popped out of its shattered socket and rolled down to Su Jin'er's feet. But it didn't stop rolling; instead, it crawled up along Su Jin'er's leg until it reached her eyes. Then the eyeball desperately tried to squeeze into her eye socket. Su Jin'er opened her mouth but couldn't make a sound as that terrifying eyeball relentlessly drilled into her.
She clawed at her own eyes in desperation but couldn't remove the eyeball no matter what. Her nails scratched her face mercilessly, leaving it covered in wounds and blood. She looked at her reflection in the mirror, which was marred by scratches and blood, and suddenly screamed.
"Jin'er! Jin'er! Wake up!"
Someone was shaking her body; a heaviness settled in her chest, and her face felt painfully hot. She struggled to open her eyes and saw Ruan Hongmei's face in front of her. She sat up and pushed her away forcefully.
"Get away from me! Stay away!"
Ruan Hongmei looked at Su Jin'er’s terrified expression and furrowed her brows. "Did you have a nightmare?"
Su Jin'er hugged her knees and looked up at Ruan Hongmei's concerned face. She had not transformed into Xiao Mei; she was still the Ruan Hongmei from last night. Feeling embarrassed, she said, "I'm sorry, I..."
"It's okay. You must have had a nightmare about me, right? That's nice. Although I know I might have been scary in your dream, you still dreamed of me."
Hearing Ruan Hongmei's cheerful words, Su Jin'er felt much less afraid. However, everything had felt so real; how could it possibly just be a dream?
Ruan Hongmei looked at Su Jin'er, who resembled a frightened deer, and said with concern, "Tell me about your dream; maybe I can help you."
Su Jin'er looked up at her and thought for a moment but decided not to tell her. She couldn't let her get involved in this horror; she couldn't bear to see anyone else die.
"It's nothing; it was just a dream."
She glanced out the window; it seemed like it was still dark outside.
"Is it still not bright outside?"
Ruan Hongmei looked out the window and said, "It's bright now; it's already eight o'clock. The weather doesn't look good today; it should rain."
Su Jin'er nodded and then got out of bed, heading toward the bathroom.
At the moment she pushed open the bathroom door, she felt as if she had returned to that dream again, her hand hovering in mid-air.
Would the bathroom be filled with blood?
Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open.
Fortunately, there was nothing inside.
She smiled helplessly, wondering when she had become so nervous.
Turning on the faucet, the cold water instantly made her feel much more awake. Looking at her flushed face in the mirror, it was not as pale as it had been in her dream last night. Perhaps she had been too tired lately and hadn't rested properly. After finally falling asleep, she had experienced a series of dreams. She shook her head and splashed the cold water on her face.
Footsteps approached from behind, and she knew it was Ruan Hongmei. The dream from last night flashed back in her mind, and she hesitated for a moment, wondering whether to turn around. However, Ruan Hongmei's words immediately stopped her wandering thoughts.
"I just went downstairs to buy you breakfast. You should eat a little bit later!"
Su Jin'er turned around and looked at her gratefully. "Why didn't you go to class?"
"Did you forget? Today is the weekend. Also, let me tell you! I'm in the same class as you. Although I don't know if I can replace Linyuan in your heart, I really want to be friends with you."
Ruan Hongmei said with a look of a little wife.
Su Jin'er smiled and said, "Of course it's great to be friends! It's quite lonely living alone in the dormitory, so it's rare for someone to want to live with me."
Seeing that Su Jin'er was willing to be friends with her, Ruan Hongmei excitedly ran over, hugged her tightly, and kissed her on the cheek, saying, "That's wonderful! Jin'er is willing to be my friend!"
Su Jin'er smiled helplessly; was it really that exciting? Or did her face really have a sign saying "keep your distance"?
"Hey! Are you running a fever? Your forehead feels so hot!"
Ruan Hongmei said as she reached out to touch her forehead.
"Really! You should go back to bed and lie down! I'll go out and buy you some medicine." Ruan Hongmei insisted, pushing Su Jin'er to lie down on the bed, then placed the breakfast she bought beside her before quickly running out.
Su Jin'er looked at the breakfast in her hands, which included soy milk, milk, millet porridge, steamed buns, dumplings, and fried dough sticks. She knew that Ruan Hongmei bought so much because she didn't know what Su Jin'er liked to eat. She was the second girl, after Linyuan, who treated her so well.
After drinking some milk and eating a few dumplings, Su Jin'er felt full. Just as she set down her breakfast, Ruan Hongmei returned from outside, completely drenched, with water dripping from her hair.
"I'm sorry you had to see me in such a messy state," Ruan Hongmei said apologetically.
Su Jin'er looked at the sky, which had started to rain without her noticing, and said, "Why didn't you bring an umbrella? You're all wet now."
"I didn't expect it to rain so quickly; it wasn't raining when I went out." She set down the medicine she was holding and picked up a towel to dry her wet hair, sticking her tongue out at Su Jin'er.
"I didn't know what you liked to eat, so I bought these. Did you eat well?" Ruan Hongmei asked, looking at the breakfast on the table.
"Yes, thank you. I ate very well."
Ruan Hongmei put down the towel, poured a glass of water, and handed the medicine to her. "Then you should take your medicine!"
Su Jin'er obediently took the medicine and swallowed it.
Just as she set down the glass of water, her phone rang. Without needing to look, she knew who was calling. She pressed the answer button, and hurried breathing came through the phone.
"Feifan, is that you?"
Su Jin'er asked tentatively.
"Jin'er, Zuo Yi is missing. I can't find him anywhere," Chu Feifan seemed to be running, his voice sounding a bit breathless.
"What happened?" Su Jin'er became anxious.
"I don't know. Yesterday afternoon, when we returned to the dormitory, I saw him sleeping and didn't wake him up. He didn't wake up until evening. I thought he was just too tired, so I didn't think much of it. This morning when I woke up, I found he wasn't there. I've searched everywhere I could think of, but I still can't find him."
After hearing Chu Feifan's words, Su Jin'er's heart sank, a bad premonition making her body tremble.
Zuo Yi cannot be in trouble; absolutely not. Otherwise, she would really let Linyuan down.
"Where are you? I'll come find you."
"It's raining outside; you should stay in the dormitory! I'll keep looking and contact you later," Chu Feifan hurriedly hung up before Su Jin'er could respond.
Su Jin'er put down her phone and was about to get out of bed when Ruan Hongmei pressed her down.
"You can't go out. First, you're running a fever. Second, it's still raining outside; going out will only worsen your condition," Ruan Hongmei said seriously.
"But my friend is missing; I have to find him," Su Jin'er's eyes were already red; she truly couldn't let anyone else get into trouble.
"If you're going to look for him, let me go instead. You stay here obediently. You wouldn't want Chu Feifan to worry about your illness while he's already worried about Zuo Yi's safety, would you?" Ruan Hongmei's words made Su Jin'er quiet down. Although she was anxious inside, Ruan Hongmei was right; she couldn't become a burden to anyone.
Seeing Su Jin'er calm down, Ruan Hongmei quickly changed her clothes and put on a raincoat before heading out. Su Jin'er leaned against the bed, quietly watching the rain outside the window.
The rain was falling steadily, and the sky was overcast, as if it were about to collapse. The air in the dormitory was so oppressive that it felt maddening. Suddenly, a flash of lightning split the sky in two, causing Su Jin'er’s heart to race as if it were about to leap out of her mouth. She clutched her chest and bent over in pain.
Zuo Yi, you must not be in trouble. I really cannot bear the pain of losing another friend.
She lay on her bed, tears soaking into the blanket.
The waiting was agonizing. She curled up under the thick comforter, feeling cold despite being covered. The chill seemed to emanate from her very core, her teeth chattering uncontrollably, tears flowing endlessly. She had no idea how many tears she had shed; her eyes felt swollen and uncomfortable.
After an unknown amount of time, footsteps finally echoed in the hallway. She sat up abruptly, waiting for Ruan Hongmei to open the dormitory door, telling herself joyfully that Zuo Yi had been found.
However, disappointment washed over her as the footsteps did not stop at her door but continued deeper into the building. Feeling dejected, she hid under the covers and pressed her mouth shut to stifle any sound.
Lightning continued to streak across the sky, tearing it open again and again, while the rain poured down relentlessly as if trying to bring the heavens crashing down.
