Chu Feifan held his head in pain, realizing this was the second time he had put Su Jin'er in danger, and this time she was taken away by the despicable Cheng He. He couldn't help but wonder what Cheng He would do to Jin'er. If Jin'er was bullied, he would never forgive himself.
Just after leaving the Old Laboratory, he called Captain Xing to inform him that they had identified the Killer and that Su Jin'er had been taken.
Then, he sat in the pavilion with Ruan Hongmei, waiting for Captain Xing to arrive.
"Do you believe in ghosts?"
After a long while, Ruan Hongmei suddenly spoke slowly.
Chu Feifan looked at her strangely and replied, "I don't believe in them; they're just figments of human imagination."
"But there are many things in this world that science can't explain! For example, taking pictures in a haunted house often results in blurry shadows appearing."
"Have you seen one?" Chu Feifan asked instead of answering.
Ruan Hongmei shook her head. "I don't know if what I saw counts as a ghost."
Chu Feifan remained silent, quietly waiting to hear her so-called ghost story.
"When I was five years old, I lived in the countryside with my grandparents. Back then, we still practiced burial. One day, a man in our village who loved to drink had a terrible temper and often beat his wife. Later, he drank too much and fell to his death. On the seventh day after his death, he came home at midnight. His wife said she saw him return, holding a wine bottle and swaying home like before. She was terrified. Eventually, she asked my grandfather to help her. I remember seeing him when my grandfather sent him off; he was covered in dirt and even cried as he left!"
Chu Feifan frowned and skeptically said, "Are you sure you saw that?"
"Yes. At that time, there was a saying in our area that children under nine could see things that adults couldn't because their eyes were pure and could easily perceive what is usually invisible," Ruan Hongmei said calmly.
Although Chu Feifan was a boy who didn't believe in demons, he wasn't scared by Ruan Hongmei's story. However, since it was night and he couldn't see that Ruan Hongmei's body was trembling slightly, his disbelief didn't mean she shared it.
"So you think ghosts exist in this world?" Chu Feifan asked calmly.
"Yes, although I haven't seen one since I grew up." After a pause, she said with a trembling voice, "Except for the shadow I saw in the basement."
Chu Feifan looked at her with amusement. "After all this time talking, you still think the shadow you saw in the basement was a ghost?"
Ruan Hongmei did not respond. Perhaps it was because she was deeply influenced by her grandfather; she had always believed that ghosts existed in the world. Her reason for transferring to this school was not only to see her so-called fiancé but also to find out what ghosts really looked like.
"Actually, people's beliefs are different. If you believe that there are ghosts in this world, then perhaps you can see things that ordinary people cannot. If you don't believe, then naturally you won't see them. Moreover, what's more important is that human imagination is boundless. Usually, we tend to magnify things we find terrifying and subconsciously tell ourselves that such things might exist in this world, which makes us feel scared. As a result, many stories about ghosts arise. However, no one dares to say they have truly seen one."
Ruan Hongmei remained silent. Perhaps she also thought that Chu Feifan had a point, but she still believed that souls existed in the world; it was just that ordinary people could not see them.
At that moment, Captain Xing and Jiang Jie walked over, looking quite exhausted.
Captain Xing's dark circles under his eyes were particularly severe.
"You both look like you haven't slept in a long time!" Ruan Hongmei stood up and said.
"Yeah, I haven't slept for two days. Zuo Yi has been missing with no news, and recently there has been a case of rape and murder in the city, so it's been a bit busy."
Ruan Hongmei took a deep breath. Just yesterday, she heard about Li Mei, who died five years ago after being raped by multiple people. Today, another similar case had occurred. Men were truly despicable!
She thought this while looking disdainfully at the two men beside her.
"By the way, earlier you mentioned on the phone that you know who the Killer is and what happened five years ago. Can you tell us?"
Chu Feifan nodded and recounted everything he had seen in the archives and what the administrator had told him. The more Captain Xing listened, the deeper his frown became.
Until Chu Feifan finished speaking, no one said a word. The air seemed to stand still as darkness and fear enveloped their minds.
"This incident from five years ago should have attracted a lot of attention; why is it that almost no one knows about it?" Captain Xing asked in confusion.
"Yeah, both Jin'er and I find it strange. However, Jin'er once saw a person dressed in black talking to Cheng He. That person seemed to want a ring, and that ring is now in Cheng He's possession. I think that's why they took Jin'er away," Chu Feifan said as he took out a cigarette, lit it, took a deep drag, and slowly exhaled a white ring of smoke. He actually didn't smoke; he only did so when he was feeling particularly bad.
"Where did Jin'er go missing?"
"At the Old Laboratory. Cheng He probably invited her there, and she deliberately avoided us. Hongmei and I were worried about her safety, so we secretly followed her, but we waited downstairs for a long time without seeing her come out."
"Have you all gone up to take a look?"
"Yes, there isn't a single person up there."
Captain Xing thought for a moment and said, "Let's go check it out."
A few of them walked towards the Old Laboratory together.
Su Jin'er groggily woke up, her hands and feet bound. The ropes were digging painfully into her flesh, and every movement sent sharp pain through her.
"You'd better not move, or many unsightly wounds will appear on your fair skin."
Su Jin'er forced her eyes open and saw a figure completely wrapped in black clothing sitting in front of her. She couldn't even tell if it was a man or a woman; the voice was a mix of both genders.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"I am the person you've been looking for!"
Su Jin'er squinted at him. "You are the true mastermind behind this whole case, the Killer?"
"That's right! Isn't it thrilling?" he laughed loudly. "Without me, how could you ever play Sherlock Holmes? You should be thanking me."
Su Jin'er glared at him fiercely. "Thank you? In your dreams! You've killed so many people; don't you feel any guilt? Don't you have nightmares at night?"
"Nightmares? How could that be? I'm doing this for my country; how could I possibly have nightmares? Besides, such a great research project deserves a Nobel Prize, don't you think?"
After saying that, he burst into laughter again.
In truth, Su Jin'er knew who he was, but she couldn't reveal it. If he found out that she knew his identity, he would definitely kill her. So she had to protect herself in order to catch him.
"You will kill me, won't you?"
"Well! You know too much."
Su Jin'er smiled and slowly sat up, saying, "Since I already know too much, can you answer some of my questions?"
The man in black thought for a moment and replied, "Go ahead! After all, you are going to die anyway."
"Did you kill Feng Liang?"
The man in black was taken aback. He thought Su Jin'er would first ask about Zuo Yi or Linyuan.
"No, but you could say it was."
Su Jin'er frowned.
"The one who actually killed Feng Liang was Feng Qian, but she doesn't remember. It was I who made her do it."
"Why?"
"Because he was meddling too much. At first, I was keeping an eye on you little ones and didn't notice that there was someone else investigating this matter. Later, I did notice, but he seemed to know less than you. However, since he was alone, I didn't pay much attention. But by the time I did take notice again, he had already discovered many of my secrets, so he had to die. Although he usually didn't talk much, I didn't expect that kid to be quite clever. So, I gave Feng Qian a ring that contained my secret weapon. Unknowingly, she ended up killing Feng Liang, and she still doesn't know it."
After saying this, he laughed heartily.
"You are truly despicable!" Su Jin'er scolded.
"Of course I have to be despicable; otherwise, how could I carry out my grand plan? This is the result of nearly twenty years of effort! And now it's about to be my harvest time. How could I let you little brats ruin my plans?"
"What have you done to Zuo Yi?"
Hearing his twisted plan made Su Jin'er feel sick.
"Zuo Yi? He has lost the will to live after Linyuan's death, so I helped him fulfill his wish and sent him to meet his beloved woman. It also allows me to use him as my test subject."
"You killed Zuo Yi?" Su Jin'er shouted loudly.
"Yes, and he died a miserable death! You didn't even see the pain on his face before he died; what a pity!"
"I will definitely kill you!" Tears streamed down her face as she glared at him, her voice hoarse with rage.
"Don't be in such a hurry; there's more exciting stuff to come! Let me tell you, entering this school was a mistake from the very beginning. Everyone in this school will die, and even if they don't, they will become my slaves, my eternal servants."
"You deserve to die! I will kill you for killing my best friend; I will not let you go."
"Hmph! Everything is designed by me, including everything that happened in your village. Everything is under my control. I can kill whoever I want whenever I want. Do you really think you can catch me? You're too naive! With so many teachers in the school dying one after another, haven't you still failed to catch me? You couldn't catch me before, and you won't now."
The man in black said confidently, his dark figure almost blending into the surrounding darkness.
