The next morning, when Su Jin'er got up, Jiang Jie was already awake. She glanced at the clock, which showed exactly seven o'clock. After getting dressed and grabbing the textbooks she needed for class, she opened the door and walked out.
Jiang Jie was sitting at the dining table eating breakfast.
"You're up?"
"Yeah! What about them?"
"Oh! They went to school. They didn't wake you because they stayed up too late last night. Today is the final of your school's Singing Competition, so they left early."
Su Jin'er rubbed her temples and said apologetically, "I completely forgot! Hongmei was supposed to participate in the competition! What a pity..."
Jiang Jie patted Su Jin'er's head and said, "It's okay; it's not your fault. Don't be too hard on yourself."
Su Jin'er shook her head with a bitter smile. In fact, it didn't matter whether it was her fault or not anymore. What mattered was that the person was gone, and nothing could change that.
"By the way, has her body undergone an autopsy?"
"Captain Xing is negotiating with them. By the way, that arm has already been sent to the police station, and results will come soon. Also, Captain Xing caught someone at school yesterday."
"Who?"
"Zheng Kai!"
"Zheng Kai? Why did they arrest him?"
"Because last night Captain Xing caught him trying to bury a bloody shirt, and it has already been confirmed that the blood on that shirt belongs to Wang Fan."
"A bloody shirt? What's going on?"
Jiang Jie recounted everything that Captain Xing discovered last night, deliberately concealing Captain Xing's judgment to see Su Jin'er's thoughts after hearing it.
"Zheng Kai is definitely not the Killer."
After listening, Su Jin'er said.
Jiang Jie showed a surprised expression but quickly recovered and asked, "Why do you say that?"
"First, if he were the Killer, he had enough time yesterday afternoon to dispose of the bloody clothes, but he didn't. Second, the place he went to bury the bloody clothes last night happened to be where Wang Fan's body was discarded. If he were the Killer, he wouldn't forget where he disposed of the body."
"What if he forgot, or didn't notice because it was dark? Or what if he wanted to take advantage of the situation, using the fact that the police had already searched there and found no clues, to bury the bloody clothes there and avoid the police's attention?"
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, "Saying he forgot is impossible. A murderer forgetting where they disposed of a body sounds ridiculous. Not noticing is even less likely. However, your idea of taking advantage of the police's oversight is still possible, but the chances are slim. Unless he intentionally wanted the police to discover it, which seems unlikely."
Jiang Jie tilted his head and listened as she continued speaking, but she fell silent.
"Why did you stop talking?"
Su Jin'er smiled and said, "It's nothing," then looked at her watch and said, "There's still half an hour before class. I want to go check out where that Paper Man disappeared last night."
Jiang Jie nodded in agreement.
Since this villa was at the end of Lotus Street, behind it was an undeveloped wasteland covered in grass, with some areas having grass that reached waist height.
The Paper Man from last night had led them to this place, although the grass there wasn't as tall.
"This grass is strange; why is it different from other places?" Su Jin'er remarked as she looked at the grass on the ground, which resembled ordinary artificial turf.
"Well, it looks like it's often been trampled on," Jiang Jie said as she squatted down, then slapped her forehead and added, "Oh my, didn't we just step on it last night?"
Su Jin'er stood up and looked in the direction of the school. If she remembered correctly, there should be a soccer field parallel to this spot. Slowly, her gaze returned to the grass, and suddenly she noticed something strange.
Not far from where she was standing, a rectangular patch of grass was flattened, as if something heavy had pressed down on it.
Seeing Su Jin'er in a daze, Jiang Jie asked, "Did you find something?"
"Look here, this long patch of grass is flattened. It doesn't look like it's been stepped on by people."
After taking a closer look, Jiang Jie exclaimed in surprise, "You're right!"
Out of nowhere, Jiang Jie pulled out a camera and started snapping pictures of the patch of grass. After finishing, she patted Su Jin'er on the shoulder and laughed, "You have great detective potential!"
"I'm still far from Captain Xing!" Su Jin'er replied.
Glancing at her watch, which read seven forty-five, she said, "I need to head to class now. Let me know if you find anything."
"Okay!"
The two returned to the villa; one went to class while the other continued investigating the case.
In fact, Captain Xing had already instructed Jiang Jie to closely follow Su Jin'er. She was to report immediately if she spotted any suspicious individuals nearby. Therefore, she quietly followed Su Jin'er into the school.
Jiang Jie was only a few years older than them and had smooth, delicate skin that made her look no different from a student. As a result, no one suspected that she wasn't actually a student.
She followed Su Jin'er from a distance. Su Jin'er remained alone without anyone approaching her and did not notice any suspicious individuals until she successfully entered the classroom.
The classroom had two doors, and Su Jin'er entered through the back door. Ever since Ruan Hongmei died, she had been keeping a low profile. Recently, as the weather grew hotter, many students wore sun hats, so she wore one too, allowing her to hide her face from others.
There weren't many students in the classroom. She found a spot in the middle and sat by the window. Soon after, Jiang Jie also entered through the back door and took a seat at the back, wearing a hat and keeping his head down.
This class was Pathology, taught by Counselor Zhang Jing. The pale young man seemed even thinner now; his pale skin revealed blue veins beneath. However, his eyes were bright, resembling black gemstones that sparkled with light.
The counselor placed the textbook on the lectern and his gaze swept across the students before landing on Su Jin'er. He lingered on her for slightly longer than on others before quickly shifting his attention elsewhere.
He cleared his throat and said, "Students, in one week we will have a mock exam. This exam is very important as it will determine whether you can pass the final exam, so I ask everyone to prepare well. Next, I will tell you the key points for the exam."
Despite his pale skin, his voice was strong and did not sound like that of a sick person.
During this class, she listened attentively; after all, an exam was approaching, and she couldn't let this case ruin her future.
Clearing her mind of chaotic thoughts, she focused on her studies. At some point, she realized that the counselor had come to her side.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over her book. She looked up to see the counselor's pale and thin face.
She hurriedly stood up, almost dropping her book in her panic.
"Teacher Zhang," she stammered.
"It's fine; please sit down! I just have a few questions to ask you."
Su Jin'er sat back down. For some reason, looking at him gave her an inexplicable sense of palpitations. Was he close to death?
This thought sent Su Jin'er into a panic; wasn't that cursing him? She quickly tried to clear her mind of such thoughts, but once they took root, they would occasionally resurface to disturb her.
"I heard you've encountered many incredible things recently, right?"
Heard? Who said that? It seems very few people know about this. How did the counselor find out? She immediately showed a wary expression.
"Hehe, you don't need to be afraid. I only heard it from a friend who works at the police station. I don't know much. You're my student, and it's the counselor's responsibility to care about students' safety and mental health. Besides, such incidents have been happening frequently in our class. If I don't take action soon, I might have to retire early."
The counselor's gentle smile made Su Jin'er lower her guard and say, "There have been some frightening incidents, but I'm sure the police will figure it out soon."
"Yes, I believe in the police's capabilities. However, will your current situation affect your studies? You don't seem to be in good spirits."
"Thank you for your concern, teacher. I'm fine."
"Good. If you encounter any trouble, feel free to come to me anytime."
"Okay."
Zhang Jing turned and left. Su Jin'er found it strange; he only came to ask if she had encountered anything incredible. What was his intention? Looking at his frail figure, she suddenly felt that a gust of wind could blow him away.
At that moment, the class bell rang, and the counselor left with the textbooks.
There was only this one class in the morning, so she packed her books and prepared to go home (the place they rented would henceforth be referred to as home).
Jiang Jie had already left the classroom early and was now sitting at home waiting for them to return.
"Hi! You're back?"
"Hey! What are you doing at home?"
"Um! I have something to tell you." After thinking for a moment, she decided to reveal that she had been following her.
"What is it?"
"Captain Xing said to secretly protect you, which actually means following you. This way, we can promptly identify any suspicious individuals around you. Do you understand?"
Hearing that she was being followed, Su Jin'er felt a bit uncomfortable. Although they meant well, it still made her uneasy.
"I know this might make you feel uncomfortable, but it's also a way to protect you."
"It's okay. You want to ask what the counselor told me today, right?"
Jiang Jie quickly nodded and looked at Su Jin'er with admiration.
"Actually, it wasn't much. He just noticed that I didn't seem very energetic and casually asked about it. However, what I found strange was that he asked if I had encountered any unbelievable events recently. Why would he use the word 'unbelievable'?"
She furrowed her brows in confusion.
"That is indeed a bit strange. I will report this to the captain."
