It is already May, and the weather is getting hotter. The warm wind carries the stuffy air, making it uncomfortable and sticky, as if all the pores in her body are sealed, unable to breathe, leaving her feeling lethargic.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
Su Jin'er’s heart immediately tightened. She recalled the last time when a delivery had brought a severed head, and her heart raced.
"I'm here!"
It was Chu Feifan's voice.
Su Jin'er felt a knot in her stomach.
"You finally made it! We were about to melt from the heat. Hurry up and install it!"
Hearing Chu Feifan's words, Su Jin'er put down her book and asked Jiang Jie beside her, "What is he going to install?"
"The air conditioner! Didn't he tell you?"
Su Jin'er shook her head, then slipped on her slippers and walked outside. Seeing the busy workers outside, she finally relaxed and couldn't help but laugh at herself for being overly anxious.
"Jin'er, it's really hot, right? It won't be long before it cools down."
Su Jin'er frowned and asked, "Did you talk to the landlord?"
"Yes, I did. I also mentioned that once we move out, the air conditioner will belong to them."
She raised her eyebrows and said, "You really are generous."
Chu Feifan chuckled a couple of times and then continued to direct the workers as they installed the air conditioning.
After a series of annoying thuds, the air conditioning was finally set up. Chu Feifan sent the workers away, closed the door, shut all the windows, and turned on the air conditioning.
The four of them sat together in the living room enjoying the cool air. As the temperature gradually dropped, perhaps due to the heat outside, her feelings of irritation lessened significantly.
She smiled at Chu Feifan and said, "To thank you for the air conditioning, I plan to cook dinner for you all today."
Chu Feifan's brows furrowed instantly.
"Really? You can cook?" Jiang Jie looked surprised.
"Hehe, then we are in for a treat today," Zuo Yi said with a smile.
Only Chu Feifan remained silent with a frown. Last time at her grandmother's house, she claimed she would cook but ended up making instant noodles. Seeing Zuo Yi and Jiang Jie looking forward to it, he felt reluctant to dampen their spirits and just smiled at them.
Su Jin'er noticed his expression but chose not to mention it.
She took out a piece of paper and wrote down a few ingredients she needed. "I need these ingredients, so who is willing to go buy them for me?"
Chu Feifan widened his eyes as he looked at the list of ingredients she had written. "Are you sure you can cook?"
She smiled and said, "Hurry up and go buy it! I'm getting things ready."
"I'll help you prepare at home; let them go!"
Saying this, Chu Feifan squeezed into the kitchen without waiting for their response.
"Alright, then we'll go buy it," Zuo Yi said as he headed out.
Watching them leave, Su Jin'er also entered the kitchen. Since all the kitchenware was newly bought, it needed to be washed thoroughly. The two of them divided the tasks and began to busy themselves in the kitchen.
Chu Feifan turned to look at Su Jin'er’s back and, for a moment, he suddenly felt as if they were already a married couple. This feeling made him very happy.
"Hey, Feifan, don't you think Zuo Yi has changed a lot?"
"Yeah! It must be after that incident!"
In truth, Chu Feifan felt very sad. When did he realize that Zuo Yi liked Su Jin'er? Was it after Su Jin'er rescued him from the Old Laboratory's basement? But why was that the case? The person he liked was clearly Linyuan; how could it be Jin'er? Why hadn't he felt this before? Sometimes, he would notice how Zuo Yi looked at Jin'er with such fervor that it made him feel as if Jin'er were standing naked before them. Every time Zuo Yi had that look in his eyes, Chu Feifan would feel a wave of sadness; after all, they were such good friends.
"It's not just that; he feels very strange to me now. Sometimes I even feel like he's a stranger, as if I've never known him at all."
Chu Feifan smiled and said, "Maybe it's because of that incident; the impact on him was really huge, which changed him completely. Forget it; don't think too much about it. No matter how much he's changed, he's still someone who has gone through life and death with us."
"No, I'm not blaming him; I just find it really strange. Maybe he is genuinely very sad."
After thinking for a moment, Su Jin'er said something that made Chu Feifan realize he felt the same way. He and Zuo Yi had been friends since childhood, and her sudden change still caught him off guard.
At that moment, the sound of the door opening came from outside.
"They're back."
"Are you sure you can really do it?"
"Don't worry, I won't let you eat instant noodles."
The three of them busily washed the ingredients she needed, but were soon shooed out by Su Jin'er. With no other choice, they sat in the living room with empty stomachs and eager hearts, waiting for her to finish cooking.
Soon, a delicious aroma wafted from the kitchen, making their stomachs growl even louder.
After about ten more minutes, the kitchen door finally opened, and Su Jin'er emerged, sweating profusely while carrying two plates of dishes.
"Wow! It smells amazing! Hurry up, I'm about to drool," Jiang Jie exclaimed, looking less like a police officer and more like a girl next door.
"You actually cooked so many dishes!" Chu Feifan said in surprise. Could it be that she had intentionally played tricks on him last time?
Su Jin'er brought out the last dish and said, "Alright, stop thinking about it. I really didn't know how to cook last time; I spent an entire day learning when I got home."
They took a long time to enjoy this meal, and they cleaned their plates thoroughly.
After finishing dinner and tidying up everything, it was already eight in the evening. With nothing much to do, a few of them sat in the living room watching television. The TV was left behind because the landlord couldn't take it with him.
As they boredly watched the dull TV programs, they suddenly realized that once life settled down, people became quite lazy, as if they had lost their passion. Su Jin'er found herself unexpectedly hoping that someone would stir things up again. She was startled by her own thoughts; how could she think like that?
It seemed as if to fulfill Su Jin'er's wish, the TV screen flickered twice before going black, and the lights began to flicker erratically before suddenly bursting with a loud bang.
Su Jin'er stared blankly at the dark room. Could it be that even her unintentional thought was known to Killer? The sudden fear overwhelmed her.
Zuo Yi and Chu Feifan jumped up from the sofa, standing in front of Su Jin'er to shield her. Jiang Jie, perhaps out of habit as a detective, instinctively drew his gun.
The room became oppressive, and everyone's hearts raced as they felt their throats tighten. It was too dark for them to see anything; they could only rely on their hearing to sense where each other was.
At that moment, Su Jin'er truly experienced what it meant to be unable to see her hand in front of her face. She breathed rapidly, waiting for the fear that could appear at any moment. However, it seemed like that person was just playing a joke on them; nothing particularly alarming happened. The waiting time was the most terrifying.
Su Jin'er's heart pounded wildly, her palms sweaty. The air-conditioned room felt stifling without ventilation, making it even more oppressive. She could clearly hear everyone's breathing.
Rapid and heavy.
In front of her, three shadows swayed continuously, but she couldn't distinguish who was who.
The thick darkness felt like an impenetrable fog pressing down on her eyelids, like someone trapped in a nightmare who desperately wanted to wake up but found their eyelids heavy as if weighed down by hundreds of pounds.
After waiting for a while and noticing nothing unusual, Jiang Jie put away his gun and said, "Feifan, you two stay here with Jin'er. I'll go check if the circuit breaker tripped."
"Did we get too nervous?" Su Jin'er said with a hint of amusement. It was just a regular power outage, yet it had made them all so tense.
"It's all that pervert's fault; it's driving me a bit crazy."
Now that they had relaxed, Chu Feifan realized how much he had been sweating. The wounds that hadn't fully healed were starting to ache, and his shirt was sticking uncomfortably to his skin.
Su Jin'er tugged at Chu Feifan's sleeve and said, "I have a flashlight in my room. Would you come with me to get it?"
"Sure!"
Without thinking twice, Chu Feifan stood up and took her hand as they headed toward the bedroom, being cautious since they couldn't see the path.
"Hey! You two go get the flashlight; I'm going to check on Jiang Jie. Why hasn't he come back yet?"
"Okay, be careful."
The two of them carefully retrieved the flashlight from the bedroom. With the flashlight in hand, they felt much bolder. However, when they returned to the living room, they realized that Jiang Jie and Zuo Yi were still missing.
"Do you think something happened to them? Why are they taking so long? Let's go check outside."
With flashlights in hand, they stepped out cautiously.
The night was dark, with no moonlight and even the stars were hidden, the heavy darkness making it hard to breathe.
Since the villa had a yard, Jiang Jie and Zuo Yi could not go outside. The two walked around the yard but did not find any sign of the others.
An uneasy feeling quickly enveloped them. If they remembered correctly, the power switch should be in that small house on the side, but the door was closed, and there was no one inside. Where could they have gone?
Could something really have happened?
"Let's go check behind the house."
"Do you think they'll be back there?"
"I don't know, but let's take a look!"
Chu Feifan took Su Jin'er's hand and headed toward the back, neither of them knowing what awaited them there, so they moved cautiously with every step.
Behind the house were trees, much darker than in front. The flashlight's beam illuminated the trees, casting shadows that looked like hellish monsters ready to pounce at any moment.
